My first time shopping there! I am traveling to Italy and really wanted something comfortable. I normally wear clarks, but I really wanted to try something different. Well, Christina was fabulous! She brought out different brands, and in different styles. She was very nice, helpful, professional and really new her stuff! When I get back, I am going back in for some more shoes. And of course, I will ask for Christina! Thank you! Cindy read more

We stopped in the Gateway store to pick up an item that we special ordered. After the transaction was completed, I asked to use the rest room. The young clerk spat out the rehearsed "We don't have a public restroom. Panera Bread will let you use theirs".. Hey-We're customers! We just bought something!! We gave your store money!! The staff needs more customer training. That young clerk was just a baby and she doesn't know the difference between "the public" and a "customer". read more

My wife was having a lot of pain in her feet. We first went to The Good Feet store where they tried to sell her 3 pairs (6 total) of off the rack inserts for $1,000!!! We went to Instep and were waited on by Cindy. Cindy was awesome! Cindy spend a lot of time with my wife and genuinely cared about her. After Cindy spend a long time with us, my wife walked out with two pairs (4 total) of inserts and a pair of sandals for about $150! It was sure better than $1,000! My wife plans on going back to Instep and Cindy in a little while to purchase some more products from this amazing store. Please give Instep and Cindy a try and see what you think. read more

I first went into this store by the suggestion of my sister a few months ago. I have had excellent experiences in buying my first pairs of Birkenstocks and being properly fitted for them. Today was an EXCEPTIONAL experience! I had tried on some black flats that were on sale a week ago, but were too snug. Today, I went back and they were still there. Cindy was amazing! She helped me try them on, and she figured out that someone had accidentally left a 2nd foam insert in one shoe under the regular orthotic insert. I probably would have never found it. Then it fit! She helped me figure out how to beat mold the leather to my foot, and I LOVE these shoes! These guys are old-school...they sit you down and fit the shoe to YOU. They are well educated, not just sales people. 100% worth a visit here and investing in good shoes! read more

I purchased Birkenstock's at this store back in May. Spent about 5 months trying to break them in, because I really wanted them to work out. But knee pains always flared up when I wore them, so I went back to InStep for advice. I was worried I would not be able to do anything because it had been 5 months since the purchase. Kaitlyn, a store associate, could not of been more helpful! Kaitlyn realized my feet were not made for Birkenstock sandals and showed me the OluKai shoes. They fit great! She allowed me to give back my Birkenstock's and exchange them for the OluKai! I was blown away by the customer service and can't say this enough, thank you Kaitlyn!! read more

Thank you Cindy for all your help!! All the information and suggestions for my aching foot was very helpful. Will definitely return to purchase other items on my wish list. read more

I stopped in hoping to get a pair of Birkenstocks repaired, and the staff was amazing! Within 10 minutes, I had been helped and was ready to go! Would definitely recommend coming here for repairs, and they also have an amazing selection of shoes in store. I also found out that they do price matching, and will definitely be buying my next pair of shoes here! read more

I LOVE this shoe store! Besides being locally owned, they carry a great range of comfortable shoes. They have Birkenstock, Mephisto, Dansko, and Earth shoes to name a few. Every time I am looking for some cute shoes I can wear anywhere and everywhere, this is where I go. The staff is awesome! They are friendly, helpful, and really know their stuff. Plus, I have bought shoes from one of the women for years. I know she must really like her job and I think they must treat the employees as well as they treat their customers. One more thing to note is that if they don't have a shoe you want in stock, they will do what they can to order it for you. Just ask! read more

This store is AMAZING. I'm going on a trip to Europe and was very concerned about my feet being able to feel comfortable with all the walking. Ariana immediately put us at ease. She let me try out multiple insoles for my vintage boot and Keds. She showed me a special way to tie my shoes and and even SHINED MY BOOTS while helping us! She really went above and beyond to answer my questions and make sure I was comfortable and happy. I even picked up a new pair of dansko's and a few pair of socks. I will return and plan on being a loyal returning customer for all my foot needs. read more

I went to the Instep location at Gateway Shopping Center (AusTX), I walked in and was immediately greeted by Carla - she was WONDERFUL, AWESOME, KIND, PROFESSIONAL, CARING, SWEET and INTELLIGENT!! Carla knows shoes and feet!! I ended up buying 3 pairs of shoes and some Orthotics. I was VERY impressed with this store as this store was HIGHLY recommended by my Podiatrist. I can't say enough how pleased I was, I was not at all pressured to buy anything, I love love love this store and Carla was TOP NOTCH!! KUDOS to Carla! I'll be back for sure. read more

I've shopped here for years and at one point I would have given them five stars but they are filling up entire sections of their shop with absolute crap you would find at a flea market run by illegals. Think bobble head kind of crap - literally - bobble head looking toys, junk toys with clocks and junk jewelry. They used to have a massive fabulous selection of shoes and insoles but now only have a decent selection with at least one two-tier table of junk. I don't get it. I find it so annoying that I shop elsewhere and go here as a last resort. One of the last times I was in the store, an aggressive sales woman wouldn't leave me alone. It was irritating for many reasons to include the fact I was without my toddler and wanted to try on numerous shoes but felt like I had to hurry and leave after feeling forced into a pair of shoes I wasn't sure about (ultimately that's my fault for buying them which I later remedied a week or so later by returning them). To add insult to injury she was some aging hippey chick who felt the need to use "cool dude" type slang and threw me a "high five" for being the same zodiac sign after she announced my birth date then zodiac sign to the store... which came after she announced my address and phone number to the store by talking at the top of her lungs. It. Was. Awful. I loved the shoes but was so pissed about the experience I returned them hoping to get someone else because there were other shoes I was interested in trying. I got there and waited for so long for someone to help me that I didn't get to try on the shoes I wanted to try on because I had my toddler with me and any 2 1/2 year old can only stay quiet and patient for so long (it was at least 20 minutes). It was just a disaster. So disappointing. And I was clear when I got there - I want to try on other shoes, not just do a return and they left me standing there waiting to do a return (while holding two shoes I was interested in) then acted surprised I wanted to try on shoes and no one apologized to me for making me wait (no reason for that as there were plenty of employees to help me but they kept helping new customers coming into the store) and they didn't care that I wanted to try on other shoes. I've worked retail in the past and it was clear to me I was being punished for doing a return. That really did it for me - the giant table of junk is annoying but to be treated like that? Now I go here as a last resort. There are plenty of other excellent stores in Austin that sell the same brands with knowledgeable patient staff; and those other stores have better parking and charge the the same or less for their shoes. 12/30/14: ADDITION: Interesting that I didn't name a salesperson but my description of highly obnoxious behavior identified the person to people who work there and elicited a rebuttal about the unnamed person. AMENDMENT to "bobble head looking toys:" -- they are actually bobble-head like plants with digital clocks on them. I can't even go in there with my toddler now because that stuff is piled high and he wants to touch it all which would be ok since he is gentle except it would cause an avalanche of crap from the tables because it's all stacked up. I'm glad the owner likes ALL the junk - it's her store and she is free to fill it with as much of that stuff as she wants and I am as free to avoid the store because I can't stand the piles of junk and costume jewelry which has taken over entire tables of what used to be options of nice shoes to buy. read more

The staff was very helpful & not overbearing. Selection is the best! I will return to get my next pair of Birks!

Incredibly helpful staff and fantastic selection for wide feet, metatarsal problems etc... I drove from San Antonio and would do it again!

Staff is VERY knowledgeable. Keep in mind that the shoes they sell here are pricey, but if you want a pair of uber-comfortable flip-flops that you can wear everyday for years and they never get worn out (and given the weather here, who doesn't want that?), give this place a try. Top-notch! read more

I recently purchased a pair of Stone Birkenstocks from InStep! I was greeted by each women working in the store. So friendly! I recently had a negative experience in a Plato's Closet where I was followed around (I assume because of my race.) While in InStep, Christin helped me find the shoes I wanted as well as informed that a pair of Birkenstocks I've wanted for several months will be restocked and she can call me when they come in! This literally made my day! I have been searching for a specific pair of Birks for months, NO online retailer or local retailer has them in stock for women. You should totally go to InStep, it's a local business which is reason enough for me! read more

A full-service shoe store that specializes in orthopedic shoes that don't look like Grandma. They've got some really cute stuff, and the staff is unusually helpful. It's pricey, but not out of line with what other places charge for the same lines. They even keep your purchases in a file, so the next time I need to replace my Birkenstock inserts, they'll know what kind and size I need. Neat! read more

I went in because my doctor said I could get my orthotics for my foot problems there. Brenda helped me, she was incredibly knowledgeable about which products helped with which problem (I have 3). She was patient and invested about 30 minutes helping me try different things to get me comfortable as possible. I forgot my wallet and had to come back the next day, and I was greeted by 3 different clerks while 1 was in the back getting the items I had on hold. They also saved my information to a file so that I don't have to bring a paper from my doctor next time I want insoles or shoes. Also, this may have been inappropriate but about the 4th time she had to touch my feet (due to how much I wouldn't like touching feet), I asked if she made a decent wage and she said she was happy to work there and that it was better than whatever her last job. I am glad to know that my money went a place that takes care of its people. Overall, a great experience. read more

Absolutely the BEST customer service of all time. My Mom and I are dansko/allegria people! My mom has bad feet and has orthotic problems and her doctor recommended Instep for shoes. We have already shopped there plenty of time. As soon as we walked in we we're introduced by Dotty. She knew her stuff!!! She was really helpful and even got my mom her MUST HAVE dansko's! She even helped my mom out with her doctors order and even offered me a job! If you ever go to Instep, I recommend talking to Dotty. read more

My doctor sent me. His confidence was solid in this place. Carla met me at door and took the time to explain all my options and choices. She was able to describe the advantages and disadvantages of each product helping me make the right choice. I left with much better feeling feet and great products. I wish I had shopped here sooner. Ask for Carla. I'll be back!! read more

I went in today looking for a specific Birkenstock which I wasn't sure they had in stock. But they did! Anyways I was greeted by this wonderful lady ( I am horrible with names but my receipt said Cindy so hopefully it is her) I just wanted to say she was so amazingly helpful and I felt so comfortable and appreciated. Her not even knowing I was buying the shoes regardless. But I got so much education with buying a pair of sandals. I have never had a shoe buying experience like that. I honestly wanted to buy like 10 pairs cause she was so nice and give her a hug but that would have been weird lol. They were so amazing and sweet I will definitely be back to buy more :) read more

I'm so glad I found this wonderful little gem! They have a great deal of Birkenstock selection and other great brands as well! Top notch service with a smile and a real passion for healthy feet. Doc recommended them and glad he did. My orthotics fit on way out but after walking around in them a little felt little short. Started bugging me so went back couple weeks later fully expecting to buy another pair and they replaced them for free without receipt (just took my name and had me in their system). Also bought some great shoes that massage my feet when I walk, and cool little foot/hammy stretcher. read more

My podiatrist confirmed that I have plantar fasciitis. She gave me a prescription to purchase shoes and house slippers with good arch supports, as well as insoles and orthotics that can be placed in any of my current shoes. She said that Instep was THE STORE to go to, to get good footwear and cushioning for my medical diagnosis. The medical prescription she gave me also meant that I did not have to pay tax on any of my purchases. I was fortunate to get Nathan as my salesperson, who took great care to measure my feet and get the correct fitting shoes. He patiently explained the benefits of their shoes and insoles and exactly how they would help my feet. He took the time to show me how to put on and take off long support socks. He took all the time I needed to get the right shoes, and he obviously cared a great deal about helping me get just the right shoe wear for me, to cure my plantar fasciitis. Nathan also directed me to the most comfortable socks I have ever worn, and I bought 3 pairs! Nathan is an exceptional and caring salesperson! I highly recommend InStep for your footwear needs. The customer service here is outstanding! My podiatrist was right! read more

This place is awesome! After countless months of debating I treated myself to some birks. Sadly the multiple places I went either carried just one style or none at all, luckily I found this cute little boutique and they had every style and more of Birkenstocks. The employees are awesome and help you find just the right pair and even help you try them on, I felt very confident doing business with these folks. Plus they can do repairs on my new loves. Best purchase I've made in a long time, I'm exited to spend the years to come in my new Mayari Birkenstocks! read more

Huge shout out to Brenda and Denise! Thanks a million for your help! Had a pair of Birks re-soled and something just was not right. After many attempts to break them in, they never would get right. Without hesitation, they sent them back to have the work redone, as any reputable company would...and should! With that, I will continue to give InStep my business as well as the business of coworkers and friends! KUDOS InStep, y'all know how to keep folks coming back! read more

I have had multiple surgeries on my left foot and had balked for years at the thought of wearing "velco" shoes but after a year of wearing several different pairs of shoes purchased at Instep I'm convinced, it's not so bad! In fact I have had compliments of my shoes!! Both Instep Stores provide excellent customer service. I especially want to brag on Cindy!! She is so patient, kind, and is just a neat person! She has never rushed me and has gotten out more boxes of shoes imaginable to properly fit me with the right pair of shoes. If she doesn't have the desired inventory at either store, she will order the shoes. We love to joke and laugh with each other, which is an added bonus! The sales force at Instep are not on commission so there is no pressure to purchase. Great stores and staff!! read more

Carla was wonderful. She must have spent nearly two hours going over my indecisiveness with styles and colors. I'm also as she put it " in-between sizes," She told me the larger size looked like the right fit. To me they felt too big only to discover when I got home and walked in them her professional opinion was correct and I should have heeded her advice in the first place. I went back not even an hour later and exchanged them. Everyone there was very helpful and kind. She however, had patience of a saint. Can't recommend her enough. read more

Today was my third visit to the store. This was my second time being helped by Deborah. She greeted me at the door and I told her I was interested in my first pair of Birkenstocks. She had great knowledge on the different styles and fabrics and even provided education about shoes and what may be wrong with what I'm currently doing and how to fix the issues. During my visit about 2 months ago, I think I tried on every shoe in the store. Today, I tried on about 30 pairs. Deborah has the patience and smile of a saint. read more

I can't say enough good things about InStep North at the Gateway Courtyard, Austin. The merchandise is excellent and the sales associates are phenomenal. The first time I went to this store was when a Dr. wrote a Rx for a certain kind of shoe insert to relieve the pain I had from a neuroma. The sales associates were so knowledgeable, pleasant and helpful. I got just what I needed and have been able to walk pain free. I have been back for other things too and they have worked with me to figure out the best solution for me. I had not previously shopped at InStep but have since realized that their sandals, shoes, and boots are cool, the styles are current, and actually made for comfort. read more

It's been a while since I have been to a real shoe store. This was a refreshing moment of quality service from beginning to end. They know their shoes and were able to offer helpful insight. Further, the questions asked were appropriate, appreciated, and helped customize my experience matching my needs precisely. Good job with the training Instep! I especially was appreciative that I was asked my price point/range, my time restrictions, and what I specifically needed shoes for-what activities. read more

Yes, they carry Aetrex insoles, but only one model, and not the one I need. Model L2400 saved my feet and cured my plantar fasciitis. I'm not going to replace my old ones with model L605 just because they "look the same" to the saleswoman. From this brief encounter I'd rather drive to Houston and go back to All About Feet, owned and run by a podiatrist. read more

I would say that I've spent more time browsing than buying at this store for years. I think it is because it just doesn't quite fit my style. The employees are always helpful so that's great. Today I learned that these stores are not dog friendly due to bad experiences with bad dog owners. They were nice about it and I believe that any business has the right not to allow animals and in most places that is the norm. But this is Austin, and dogs are allowed in many places. I work all week so I take my dog on errands so she doesn't have to be alone all the time. She is small and very well behaved and I have many other choices in shoe stores, where she is allowed, that I will be passing on In Step in the future. read more

A true full service store with excellent service! After our first visit I'm hooked and don't want to go anywhere else.
