Easily accessible from 35, this is an adventure suitable for the young and old. There are different levels of experience, you can be challenged or just explore. Open since the 60s, this is a spectacular peek into the underbelly of nature. Our guide shared a lot of science and kept us safe and amused. Highly recommend. I would give this five stars but the exit phase was swift and our guide never looked back to see if any of us were struggling.

This was more interesting and fascinating than I thought. I enjoyed my tour with Myles. The parking lot is very large. Plenty of parking. The tour to the cave is about a mile round trip. I don't think you can take kids strollers on the tour. And you should be in capable condition to walk the distance. The walk back is more upward, some areas are steep. It is humid as you get down, which I thought it would be cool underground. I had curly hair going in, came out with straight frizzy hair. The tour guide stops along the way and talks about the rocks, the forms, and some extra surprises along the way. The guide will also take a photo of you and your group, and you can purchase the picture at the end when you go back to the gift shop. Myles was a great tour guide. He explained everything so well. Answered questions we had. Friendly and knowledgeable. Was a very nice hour or so tour. Well worth the time and drive there. Happy I did something new and a little adventurous.

Thing Two's scout troop came here a few weeks ago to get a tour of the caverns and to earn a merit badge specifically for the Geology merit badge which can be fully earned in one day. The scouting tour starts when the cavern opens to not only allow scouts to explore the caverns for the geological aspects but also to fully cover all the requirements of the merit badge. When the merit badge is complete, the group breaks for lunch. It should be noted that full lunches are not served here but snacks are available for purchase. After lunch the scouts are afforded the opportunity to explore outside and collect rocks from the cavern. Aside from the education that the scouts get when here, that it's a wonderful place to cool off and learn something in the hot summer months as the temperature inside the caverns are 72°F (22°C) year-round. #getoutandexploretexas

My team and I went on an excursion with this one while on a business trip. We had a blast learning about the geology and history of this cavern. Our tour guide was very helpful and interactive. I would recommend this visit for anyone in the area and on their journey to and from Texas.

Stopped by on the way back to Austin and didn't know there are caves in Taxas. Curiosity got us here (since we got kid). Quite unique and interesting tour and the things we learned from it. The tour guide is very accommodated, knowledgeable and nice. The cave urself is quite fun to walk through it. And nicely down with the lighting, it added a unique & curiosity and mystique to it. The kid loved it plus it's cooler down there than outside and great break from it and the driving for sure.

Although not one of the larger caves in the US, the tour isn't bad for those who are interested in caves or have a couple hours to kill. It's an easy walk and you cover about a mile in an 'out-n-back' or should I say and down and up tour. There are some interesting aspects to the cave, including how it was discovered and the plethora of dinosaur and other animal fossils that have been recovered. About 3/4 way through the cave several actual bones are displayed. Our guide was Mindy. She has been there for 4 years and was very knowledgeable about the cave. For those with more time or who are adventurous, there is a 'flashlight' tour held a few times during the day as well as a 'wild caving' tour. The latter is serious caving and only on the weekends and lasts approximately 4 hours.

Who doesn't like caves and who knew they were so close to Austin! As someone who loves the Carlsbad Caverns these are a great experience on a smaller scale. All around an excellent time.

We took the adventure tour today to do something special on Valentine's Day. It was so very busy! Our tour guide was Tom and he was so informative and fun and kind. He had sweet little stories for all the children. He was very knowledgeable. I learned that he has been going to that cave his entire life, he even took his dates there and he's probably a grandpa now. I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Our group was probably 25 people. They had a group descending every 20 minutes. It was quite interesting. The cave actually goes underneath the 35 freeway! We paused and listened and it sounded like lightning as the cars passed over the top. There's an old ladder inside where explorers used to climb down into the cave. That same ladder is on the side of the freeway just like a half mile down inside of a black shed. Nobody knows what's there without taking this tour. They have a beautiful gift shop with lots of wonderful things to buy. They take a photo of each party along the tour and to buy that photo is only $13! They have three different tours to choose from. The adventure tour was one hour. Then they have a 90 minute tour and a 3 1/2 hour tour. The one hour tour that we took was 1 mile long. The terrain is up and down and sometimes slippery so wear your good walking shoes with tread. When you get down to the very bottom, it's pretty warm so don't overdress. Layer with a hoodie that you can tie around your waist. This is not a place for anyone who can't walk a mile on varied terrain--No wheelchairs no strollers, nothing like that. I look forward to going back and taking the longer tour. Every employee that I spoke to was so very kind and helpful. I really like this place. I highly recommend you visit!

Inner Space Cavern is a cool place to visit! We chose the base price/tour option. The whole tour took about 50 minutes to complete. Our tour guide was funny and very knowledgeable. She had some cool facts and tried to be engaging with the large group of about 25 of us. Cons: Felt like the tickets were pretty pricey for the base ticket option (around $24 dollars per adult). The gift shop had a lot of Knick knacks and things geared towards mostly children. Everything seemed to be pretty pricey.

We had a blast at the inner space cavern on the adventure tour. The tour guide was a retired high school teacher and tons of fun. They offer two other tours the hidden passages tour which is a little more challenging and the rooms are not light, so you are given a flashlight for the tour and then there the wild cave tour that's 3-4 hours long and very difficult, so much that your instructed to wear old clothes and theres a wash station where you can clean up before you leave because there's lots of crawling and climbing and you get very dirty. They say the wild cave tour is not for everyone. The tour was about an hour and 15 minutes long. It was lots of fun and I would love to go back and try the hidden passages tour!

Inner Space Cavern was so cool! This cave system was discovered in 1963 when they were building Interstate 75. We did the "easiest" Adventure tour ($24.95 each) which is suitable for anyone over 3 years old, but they have more challenging options available as well. Our tour guide Jordan was phenomenal! Highly recommend this gem!

Ask the Community - Inner Space Cavern

    Is it cold?

We went during the hottest part of summer and inside the caverns was about 70-72 degrees. Everyone was in short sleeves and either shorts of jeans, it was comfortable and not cold. I can't say how it'll be during a cooler part of the year though.

Is it a good idea to bring an older person (84 yrs)? What is the distance that you're walking over the course of the 1hr 15min tour?

No it's not. It's a pretty tough uphill walk after going all the way down into the cavern

What's a good time to go?

School is out so you won't have to worry about large school groups. Going on a hot afternoon is nice as it is a constant temperature cavern. Otherwise, it makes no difference.

You can see the entire property and all of the animals on the safari trip. Additionally they have fantastic cabins that are themed, and if you have children under the age of 10, the pirate themed cabins are beyond your wildest imagination.... as far as I am aware all of the sleeping accommodations include kitchens so you can absolutely cook for your family instead of paying for the delicious ranch food. I did a wild cave tour without the extra charges that Longhorn collects. At Longhorn, our guide, Johnson did an amazing job with our small group of six people for the 10:45 AM tour. My brother and I initially registered for the 11:00 AM tour and am glad that we were suggested another time. We passed by the 11:00 AM tour and they had 40+ people in their group. Johnson showed us cool geological formations. We saw dolomite, calcium bicarbonate, chert, limestone, geodes, stalagmites, stalactites, and quartz crystals. Johnson is somewhat funny; he had a bit of quirky and dry humor. I enjoyed the history of the caverns, but some of it I thought was interesting. It was really delightful to learn that in the 1800's, before the CCC got involved, the locals would dance and play music turning the cave into an auditorium of entertainment. Johnson said that if certain geological formations glows, it is growing. Very catchy phase for memory. I got to see a few bats hanging out. They were tricolor bats which are smallest bats. The cave is cool, but thankfully not slippery. I was wearing no grip support shoes, but I didn't fall or have the urge to fall. There are mats on the floor of the cave to prevent falls. Johnson gave us more time to look around and admire the geology. My brother and I weren't required to bring our own flashlights. Johnson had a flashlight, but forgot to grab the blacklights. What I find is strange is that this is a state park that you cannot renew your state park pass at. This park headquarters is very different than the rest considering that there's a third party company handing the cave tours, they sell ice-cees, popcorn, and the gift shop is very big and vast. The others don't have this. It is questionable to me. I was told that I needed to go to Inks Lake to renew my pass. The cave tours are very pricey. Kickapoo Caverns tour was very affordable at $10. You can use the park pass. You can't get your state park passport stamped at Longhorn Caverns either. It seems like Longhorn Caverns is more for profit and the history about the cavern could be overly exaggerated to attract customers. My opinion. It was hard to believe half of the things what Johnson was telling us. There's one portion of geological formation in the cave that is "dead" because in year 1919, the locals went exploring by touching the formation it "killed" it. I preferred Kickapoo Caverns and the Caverns of Sonora a lot more. Even Inner Space Caverns and Natural Bridge were very exciting to see. Longhorn is cool, but didn't give me that WOW-factor, but I still had a ton of fun on a Sunday morning.

The train crossed the scenic trestle bridge over the South San Gabriel River and through Short Creek Canyon -- all from the comfort of a restored historic railcar pulled by a diesel locomotive. There were beverages, snacks, train memobilla, toys, books and puzzles for the children, train t-shirts for adults and children were also available for purchase. (Restrooms were also available on the train) Midway through the trip, the passengers enjoyed a two-hour layover in the town of Burnet, to explore the historic square, browse local shops, and enjoy lunch on their own at one of the local restaurants. It is a three block walk from the Burnet Train depot to the town of Burnet. My daughter and I and some other passengers could not walk those three blocks, so my daughter and I shopped at HEB next to the train depot, sat in one of the HEB scooters in the shade and had our lunch. Some of the other passengers sat on the benches at the train depot building, you are welcome to pack a picnic lunch! Passengers are allowed to bring their own food and beverages. Non-alcoholic drinks are NOT welcomed on board the train. If bottled alcohol is purchased in the Town of Burnet or at HEB, you can bring it on the train, but you CANNOT open the alcohol on the train. Total Duration: 6.5 hours round trip (includes 2-hour layover in Burnet, TX) Unfortunately, Saturday, the train departed at 1:15pm and BAM!!! A train break down, leaving the train stopping on the railroad track bridge over South San Gabriel River for five hours until the mechanic arrived from Houston, TX with the part. But the Conductor called ahead to let the train depot know the train has had a mechanical failure and help is needed. The First Responders and Sheriff came aboard the train to keep the passengers informed telling us that they have arrived along with five busses on stand-by if the train cannot be fixed and we have to evacuate the train. Fortunately, after five hours, the mechanic and train part arrived, the mechanic repaired the mechanical breakdown, the train started, the busses were not needed and the train returned back to Cedar Park Depot after five hours. Our conductor, Steve and his assistants was very helpful. We were given bottled water and kept calm listening to train history by Steve. Steve saved the day! Saturday evening, all passengers who purchased tickets were sent an apologic email and information regarding a refund. That was a very nice jesture from the Austin Steam Train Association. RECOMMEDATION: I would take another Hill Country Flyer train ride, hoping no other mechanical failures happen. I would also wish that some organization in Burnet begin offering golf cart or some type of transportation from the train depot to the town of Burnet due to some of the passengers cannot walk the three blocks from the Burnet train Depot to the town of Burnet to shop. The vehicles would only be used to pickup the passengers from the train depot taking them to town and return them to the train depot filling the alloted time of their visit. I think the passengers would be happy and the community of Burnet would be very pleased to see more passengers coming to town via some type of transportation.

The seats were extremely comfortable and the car was air conditioned. Our volunteer guide, Steve, was friendly, knowledgeable, and full of entertaining stories about train travel. On this particular day, there was, unfortunately, a mechanical issue with our engine, resulting in a nearly four hour stop directly on the newly built wooden trestle over the San Saba River. The situation was unavoidable, and while inconvenient, I commend the staff aboard the train for their exemplary handling of the situation. Their number one priority was safety. It would have been potentially dangerous to exit the train into the wilderness of the Texas Hill Country. We would have had to walk along the train tracks, down an embankment, and then cross a natural low water crossing. A plan was put into place on how best to accomplish this, which would have included help from the fire department, sheriff, a Utility Task Vehicle for anyone who could not make such a trek, and four Cap Metro buses that were brought in to provide transportation back to the depot, if necessary, but only as a last resort. We waited, stopped, for nearly four hours, but we were given updates approximately every 20-30 minutes by staff members that visited each car, with the opportunity to ask questions and share whatever concerns we may have had. Sheltering in place was the safest option for all involved. The A/C continued to run, we had a working bathroom, and extra water was brought in for us. Snacks were also available. Staff made sure that we were informed, comfortable, entertained throughout the wait. There was a passenger in another car who had some sort of medical issue. Fire department paramedics and a sheriff boarded the train to assist that passenger. ASTA's head mechanic actually interrupted his vacation in Houston to pick up a part, meet the train, and make the repair on site. He was already in route, even as the personnel on board were diagnosing the problem. Once the mechanical problem was fixed, we were able to return to the station, later than planned, but we were always comfortable, informed, and never in danger. Even after the trip, ASTA went above and beyond to make the situation right. They emailed all passengers, offering one of 3 choices for compensation: * A full refund for your tickets * Exchange your tickets for a future Hill Country Flyer ride this year * A voucher for the full value of your tickets, to use at your convenience While we appreciate these options greatly, I don't feel that any compensation is actually necessary. ASTA is a not-for-profit entity with the primary purpose of helping to restore old trains and bring the joy of riding the rails to others, including families who otherwise could not afford excursions such as this. All in all, we had a wonderful day and could not have been more impressed with their handling of a difficult situation. We will definitely ride with them again!

Cannot wait to try this drizzled over some soft cheese. I don't know how I got out with only the few items I purchased (photos below), so I'll have to go back. Many of the items would make great gifts (I'm thinking of those coffee mugs: Let it Bee; Bee Happy; and my favorite: Give Bees a Chance. Tours are also offered but must be scheduled in advance, a down side of spur-of-the-moment exploring. I'll be sure to do that next time, when I'm back to purchase gifts.
