This isn't the best caverns I've visited within a Texas State Park, but it is pretty darn cool. The best caverns tour is at Kickapoo Caverns. I did a wild cave tour without the extra charges that Longhorn collects. At Longhorn, our guide, Johnson did an amazing job with our small group of six people for the 10:45 AM tour. My brother and I initially registered for the 11:00 AM tour and am glad that we were suggested another time. We passed by the 11:00 AM tour and they had 40+ people in their group. Johnson showed us cool geological formations. We saw dolomite, calcium bicarbonate, chert, limestone, geodes, stalagmites, stalactites, and quartz crystals. Johnson is somewhat funny; he had a bit of quirky and dry humor. I enjoyed the history of the caverns, but some of it I thought was interesting. It was really delightful to learn that in the 1800's, before the CCC got involved, the locals would dance and play music turning the cave into an auditorium of entertainment. Johnson said that if certain geological formations glows, it is growing. Very catchy phase for memory. I got to see a few bats hanging out. They were tricolor bats which are smallest bats. The cave is cool, but thankfully not slippery. I was wearing no grip support shoes, but I didn't fall or have the urge to fall. There are mats on the floor of the cave to prevent falls. Johnson gave us more time to look around and admire the geology. My brother and I weren't required to bring our own flashlights. Johnson had a flashlight, but forgot to grab the blacklights. What I find is strange is that this is a state park that you cannot renew your state park pass at. This park headquarters is very different than the rest considering that there's a third party company handing the cave tours, they sell ice-cees, popcorn, and the gift shop is very big and vast. The others don't have this. It is questionable to me. I was told that I needed to go to Inks Lake to renew my pass. The cave tours are very pricey. Kickapoo Caverns tour was very affordable at $10. You can use the park pass. You can't get your state park passport stamped at Longhorn Caverns either. It seems like Longhorn Caverns is more for profit and the history about the cavern could be overly exaggerated to attract customers. My opinion. It was hard to believe half of the things what Johnson was telling us. There's one portion of geological formation in the cave that is "dead" because in year 1919, the locals went exploring by touching the formation it "killed" it. I preferred Kickapoo Caverns and the Caverns of Sonora a lot more. Even Inner Space Caverns and Natural Bridge were very exciting to see. Longhorn is cool, but didn't give me that WOW-factor, but I still had a ton of fun on a Sunday morning. read more

One of the most unique experiences you've ever happens right here at Longhorn Cavern. It makes you feel like you've stepped into another world. the cave feels cool in temperature and vibes. Our guide shared stories about the cavern's formations including the stalactites and stalagmites. My favourite spot was the Cathedral area with its open space and unique rock shapes. Above ground, the park is just as lovely. There are short trails around the park in the middle of Texas Hill Country. My mom and I took a walking tour of the cavern. They're stunning and full of unique and interesting history. Unfortunately, the reason for the less than great review is due to our guide (Marissa, I think). I debated whether or not to take a tour. I'm a caregiver for my 75 year old mother, so I'm cautious with her and very budget conscious. However, after reading a lot of reviews, all of which referenced engaging and funny guides, I decided to splurge. Mom has worked really hard to build up her strength and endurance with hiking. So, we felt good about this. Mom and I were the only two on our 10am tour. Our guide met us at the meeting area several minutes late, then dove right in to the rules. She made zero attempt to engage with us before taking off down the path at a very brisk pace. She stopped at each point along and quickly recited her script in monotone, before rushing us through to the next point. Mom and I tried repeatedly to engage with our guide and make conversation, but she never strayed from her script. I totally get that she's done this tour a million times, but it was Mom's first. She was fascinated and wanted to soak it in. I absolutely get that the guides have a timeframe in which they're expected to complete the tour. However, again, Mom is 75...a healthy and fairly agile 75, but 75 nonetheless. What a great opportunity here to go spelunking! And not in the crawl on the floor kind. But they also have that if you are into that kind of stuff. Our guide was very informative and had the answers to all of our questions. If you are a cave explorer and have not been here ever check them out. This was a really unique experience! We had a great tour guide, Gary, full of information and dad jokes. The staff was very professional and friendly. We took our 2 and 4 year old. They enjoyed it but we're tired by the end. It is a 90 minute tour and over 1 mile walk. We also did the gem sifting activity which the girls loved! I would recommend it for younger kids. My son and I decided to check this place out on our way back to Austin from Enchanted Rock. It was pretty busy on a Sunday, we were able to walk in but had to wait an hour, but that was ok because there were trails and cool CCC structures on the ground. So it was nice to check those out! We had a large group on the tour (40) but our guide Jennifer spoke up so everyone could hear and kept everyone safe. She had some great knowledge about the cave to share and some funny deadpan jokes. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure. Since I spent all day Saturday in the Texas sun, Sunday seemed like the perfect day to take some underground time! This cavern is absolutely fascinating, especially the dolomite section in the back! The tour was about half the price of the Natural Bridge Cavern ticket, and was 30 minutes longer! There are specialty tours available, like lantern tours lighting up the darkness, or a 3 hour wild cave tour with a t-shirt gifted for successful completion! There are short trails that have an above ground view of the karst landscape, and a few CCC structures as well. Book your tickets in advance as they can fill up, and the cave stays around the 70's, so not too hot, not too cold. Wear appropriate shoes, there are some head duck areas and slippery rock paths, and you are walking for about 90 minutes! read more

Initially drove out to enchanted rock and turned away due to not having a reservation and came across this place in Burnet TX. - Entry cost $158.88 - backpacks water allowed - included a very knowledgeable guide - Terrain is mostly smooth, no high inclines -9- 10 years olds made it through effortlessly -different package options. My reservation was booked same day. - gift shop offer food and beverages - activities seen in the different packages are available to purchase upon arrival was not required to purchase during reservation. Really fun cave tour. The caves stay cool, so it's a very reasonable summer afternoon activity after a hike and cliff jump at Ink Lakes, which is exactly what we did! Best parts of the tour were the lights out section, and the reveal when the lights got turned on at a certain part. Yelpers this place is a hidden gem in Texas. I lived in Texas all my life and I never knew about this place. Today I was going to take my two children and my nephew to Blue Bonnet cafe. Then I was like let me search for something to do while we are in the area. And this is what I found. This place is educational about Texas and how caverns are formed. I was really impressed with our tour guide Jim! He was an amazing tour guide and made it so much fun for my family. He did say if it wasn't great then Julio Iglesias was our tour guide! ROTFLMAO... Thankfully we got Jim as our tour guide. And yes Jim I remembered your name! He said most folks forget his name. But how can you forget great tour guide like Jim. Jim was very inspirational, motivating, intelligent with the history of the cavern and history period. He was also comical during the whole tour and kept four teenagers actively engaged with the tour. Not once were they on their phones other than to take photos. And by the way no cell service in the cavern so perfect opportunity for these teenagers to enjoy the great tour of longhorn caverns by Jim! I cannot say anything bad about Julio Iglesias, why because Jim was the greatest tour guide... And the great thing about our tour, we had the VIP tour. What does that entail? We got Jim all to ourselves since nobody else came when arrived for our tour. This cavern is one of the youngest in the world. One of the two with that only a river of water flowed through it. The other one was somewhere in Kentucky. Jim taught us about Limestone and how it was created. That limestone only comes from the bottom of the ocean. So in his words Texas was under the oceans millions or billions of years ago. We also received a class on how caverns are formed. I was truly amazed because I have been to three caverns in my life time and never knew how they are formed. Also, in Texas never knew someone's property line goes far underground whether they know it or not. At the dead of the tour he will you about that at 130 feet under ground. As you're going through the tour with Jim he will teach you about Pareidolia. If you don't know what that word means you can Google it. If not l, Jim will educate you! Because I never knew that word until I met our tour guide Jim! And if you're an individual who does see things like you're not crazy. It's a natural thing we do as humans. At one point of the tour you will get to experience a blackout phase for two minutes. I had to say it reminded me of being in Afghanistan or Iraq with total darkness. Except there were no stars or moon light to guide you. It was total darkness. So if you're afraid of the dark, it's really not that bad. It's only two minutes. And if you're 6'2 or taller be prepared for some low spots. Don't worry if Jim can do it all day giving tours so can you. LoL! And don't use your age, Jim is up there like me but maybe he has 13 or 20 years on me, so that tells you how motivating and inspirational Jim the tour guide is. We also learned this cavern was built to compete with Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico because Texas was losing money to them. So during the Great Depression this was another thing our federal government did to help create jobs back then after the Great Depression. Getting to this location was a breeze and a lot of fun! Nothing but country view once you're out of city limits. In the road way to the caverns there are a couple of steep hill side roads that make your vehicle feel like you're on a roller coaster. Parking is super tight by the main entrance so park in the rear of the entrance if you have a larger vehicle. If this place is busy, parking can be limited. Their gift shop is amazing and they have a lot cool things to buy. They have water, soda, snacks, and pizza available at the gift shop. All the staff are amazing and courtesy like Jim. But I have to keep promoting Jim, because he was the best tour guide I have ever had in my lifetime regarding caverns! They do have warning signs about using the restrooms because there are no restrooms down below in the caverns. It's a 90 minute that felt more like 30 minutes. We were so actively engaged with the tour that we lost track of time. At the end of the tour, if you have kids or teenagers they will receive a sticker for their participation during the tour. I highly recommend coming here if you're from Texas or if you're from out of state.efinitely check this place out! It's truly an amazing place to visit. read more

This is my third time here over the course of decades. I love the beauty of cool, ancient, caverns made by time and elements. It's $22.50 for an adult ticket, and in my opinion, well worth the 1 1/2 hour guided tour. There were beautiful wild flowers all along the way too. The caverns are an excellent way to escape the summer heat that will be upon us soon. I highly recommend you buy tickets in advance online - you never know when a bus full of scouts will arrive to earn their spelunking badge. Enjoy! read more

We did the wild cave tour with our university group, and it was a good informative experience, although not as adventurous as we expected. The tour description makes it sound like really intensive crawling for three hours, but there was so much walking in big open spaces and a lot of just sitting there. It was quite boring at times, and we wish the tour went by faster. Getting to see different parts of the cave was still enjoyable, and our tour guide Misty was fantastic. They provided safety gear but did not provide elbow pads, which made army crawling extremely painful. We got a special discount with our student group, but I saw that normal registration was over $100 per person, which is definitely not worth it. I was really impressed by the gift shop and got a decorative park poster. You can't camp in this park, but we camped in the nearby Inks Lake State Park. Overall, the caves were cool but not worth the price and not that adventurous. read more

I was invited to go out to Longhorn Cavern State Park for the eclipse. Their service and what they offered was amazing and made a once in a lifetime experience so memorable and very pain free. I can't believe the amazing time my wife and I had today at this true hidden Texas gem. We took the early black light tour and it was an amazing adventure to say the least. Jim our tour guy aka "Joe" kept us entertained throughout the cavern. We definitely saw so many things you wouldn't normally view during the regular tour and of course we got to see some bats as well. There were stops for history, photos, jokes, and many laughs. Very family friendly and not too strenuous of a hike through the cavern. The hospitality and friendly atmosphere did not stop on the tour. The from staff were just as helpful and courteous. What an amazing group of ladies that work the counters up front and assist visitors. I would definitely recommend getting some mineral dirt and a geode to crack and of course a shirt because it's good to remember where you've been and it helps support the park system. By far one of the best experiences we have had here in Central TX. The first thing that intrigued my wife about visiting these caverns is the history of them and the events they had there in the 40s. Just the thought of having a Glenn Miller tye band in a cavern... Wow!!! The acoustics!!! The caverns are well kept, not 90 degrees like other ones. We toured them mid summer, but as soon as we went down a few feet it went down to 68-72 degrees. It was amazing. We love to go to caves. This one had very few formations/ornaments in the cave. The guide was not very informative and began rushing us 30 minutes into a 90 minute tour because "I really have to pee" and "I do this to myself all the time", really? In the gift shop, we cracked a Geode and that was super fun. Two stars because the Geode kept it from being one. This state park has one of the most beautiful rock formations I've ever laid eyes on. The water that used to be where the caverns are now sculpted and etched its way through to create tunnels and halls along the way. You have to enter the guest center and purchase your ticket. The guides will come and you'll enter in groups. They are very personable and funny. When you first enter you'll not feel a sense or claustrophobia, but as we progress the passages get more narrow and eventually we arrived at a room where I felt was the scariest. We all turned off our flash lights and not a sound was made. You can barely hear each other breathe, but we got to see the minerals glowing. It was incredible. My husband compared the silence to that of when he went sky diving. The brain just stopped processing and just enjoying the silence. It does get cold and gauge your ability to handle narrow spaces and the dark. It will be dark despite the passages having some light. read more

We've been to a few caverns in the Texas area and this one has been our favorite by far. The guide was knowledgeable and friendly. The walk was an easy 1.5 miles (my hypotonic 7 year old kept up).
