    Off we go!
    Don B.

It's been almost two years since Peg and I had the pleasure of taking the VTRC Ultimate Eagle Cruise and when we heard that more eagles than normal had taken up temporary residence, back to Burnet we went! Captain Shawn and Tim the Guide were with us again; felt like old home week! We were joined by an interesting group from a tour bus consisting of Oriental men and women who had married Caucasian Americans. I would have never imagined such an organized group existed but there they were and the nicest bunch of folks we could ever hope to meet. The day was dreary and misty, so I apologize that the photos are not of better quality, especially those of the eagles. And speaking of eagles, they were indeed out in force. During the four-hour cruise, there were nineteen sightings. I snapped over 200 photos but discarded most; misty weather and a telephoto lens stretched to its max don't mix very well, to say nothing of eagles who can whirl and spin out of frame on a dime. During this cruise, the geology bug bit and I went nuts snapping the natural features of the place. Some were of sites I captured in our previous trip but many are new to this one. Once again, Captain Shawn made his chicken gumbo; he's from Lafayette, Louisiana and knows his way around the kitchen! There was plenty to go around and many of us left with large Styrofoam cups full of it. In my last review, I commented on the kindness of the folks at VTRC and I'm happy to report that's still the case. Keep up the great work, guys--we'll be back!

Bottom floor of boat is enclosed with heat and A/C.

Everybody has a different idea of what's fun. Some fast, some slow. If your looking for slow, the VTRC is wonderful. The double decker boat is docked at the north end of Lake Buchanan. The lower deck is enclosed. Yes, that means heated and Air Conditioned! Plenty of seating. The upper deck is open air. The wind in your hair, and maybe a little sweat in your eye. But who cares, upper deck it is! A short cruise got us to the mouth of the Colorado River. For a while it was lake houses and fancy boat docks. Then, civilization went away, and it was just us and the trees. All this time, the guide is telling us about the lake , the river, and it's history. Soon we came upon a water fall, so pretty out in the middle of nowhere. The fall colors were starting to show and they were beautiful. This area is a winter nesting area for bald eagles, and we saw 2 that had already arrived. The 2 1/2 hour trip was pure joy. Some people brought their own food and drink. The boat supplies water and tea. We will definitely do this again next time we're in the area! Hope you get the chance to try it!

We went on this boat tour with the promise that they were advertising there was going to be bald eagles that are around this lake. We did not see any bald eagles we did not see any bald eagles nest we saw that the water was very murky like P green soup which is not conductive for bald eagles to fish in. My friend went to this boat tour in March of last year and he found the same thing there were no bald eagles around and he never saw one. I went on this tour February 2, 2017 and I found the same thing there are no bald eagles at this lake the water is not clear enough for bald eagles to see fish.

What is the best side of the boat to sit?

During the cruise you can walk around and go to the upper deck . They take the same route out and back so you see both sides

I did a wild cave tour without the extra charges that Longhorn collects. At Longhorn, our guide, Johnson did an amazing job with our small group of six people for the 10:45 AM tour. My brother and I initially registered for the 11:00 AM tour and am glad that we were suggested another time. We passed by the 11:00 AM tour and they had 40+ people in their group. Johnson showed us cool geological formations. We saw dolomite, calcium bicarbonate, chert, limestone, geodes, stalagmites, stalactites, and quartz crystals. Johnson is somewhat funny; he had a bit of quirky and dry humor. I enjoyed the history of the caverns, but some of it I thought was interesting. It was really delightful to learn that in the 1800's, before the CCC got involved, the locals would dance and play music turning the cave into an auditorium of entertainment. Johnson said that if certain geological formations glows, it is growing. Very catchy phase for memory. I got to see a few bats hanging out. They were tricolor bats which are smallest bats. The cave is cool, but thankfully not slippery. I was wearing no grip support shoes, but I didn't fall or have the urge to fall. There are mats on the floor of the cave to prevent falls. Johnson gave us more time to look around and admire the geology. My brother and I weren't required to bring our own flashlights. Johnson had a flashlight, but forgot to grab the blacklights. What I find is strange is that this is a state park that you cannot renew your state park pass at. This park headquarters is very different than the rest considering that there's a third party company handing the cave tours, they sell ice-cees, popcorn, and the gift shop is very big and vast. The others don't have this. It is questionable to me. I was told that I needed to go to Inks Lake to renew my pass. The cave tours are very pricey. Kickapoo Caverns tour was very affordable at $10. You can use the park pass. You can't get your state park passport stamped at Longhorn Caverns either. It seems like Longhorn Caverns is more for profit and the history about the cavern could be overly exaggerated to attract customers. My opinion. It was hard to believe half of the things what Johnson was telling us. There's one portion of geological formation in the cave that is "dead" because in year 1919, the locals went exploring by touching the formation it "killed" it. I preferred Kickapoo Caverns and the Caverns of Sonora a lot more. Even Inner Space Caverns and Natural Bridge were very exciting to see. Longhorn is cool, but didn't give me that WOW-factor, but I still had a ton of fun on a Sunday morning.

The place was clean and just the right size for my wife and I. Being city folks you forget how dark it is out in the country at nights. It was nice. We signed up for these adventures to make the weekend even more fun: 1. Feed baby kangaroo(Bodhi). This was about a 30 minute session where we got to feed him a bottle and kibble. It really was an amazing experience. 2. Bucket of food and self guided feeding of animals. We walked the property and hid to feed so many animals. All of the animals were friendly toward people. They were all very good motivated. We encountered a giraffe, donkeys, zebras, horses, cows, pigs, dwarf steers, camels, emu, deer, buffalo and more. The animals were often trying to bully their way to the front of the line. The cow Oreo who has not skipped a meal was always front of the line. 3. Afternoon safari ride in ATV. This was a fun ride around the property. Did not see any new animals but had a great time. The cows out at pasture were thrilled to be fed. 4. Giraffe encounter and meal. This was a little expensive but I would spend it again. The giraffes were super friendly and personable. We wanted to take them home because they were so much fun. The guide, experience and never felt rushed made this worth it. Our guide was top notch. I think her name was Jackie but could be wrong.

After all, this place is out in the country and, although not too far off of Hwy 71, it is secluded and kind of remote (probably seems more remote than it actually is). It was, however, a delightful surprise! The shop had a wide variety of bee-related items from tools and clothing for serious bee keepers to honeys and honey-sweetened candies to bee-themed household goods. So cute!! We were treated to a honey tasting, which (like wines) started with the lighter colored and flavored honey (a local honey) up to the darker honeys, then we veered off and were sampling cinnamon honey (think Red Hots + honey), coffee and chocolate flavored, and (my favorite) chili-infused honey. Cannot wait to try this drizzled over some soft cheese. I don't know how I got out with only the few items I purchased (photos below), so I'll have to go back. Many of the items would make great gifts (I'm thinking of those coffee mugs: Let it Bee; Bee Happy; and my favorite: Give Bees a Chance. Tours are also offered but must be scheduled in advance, a down side of spur-of-the-moment exploring. I'll be sure to do that next time, when I'm back to purchase gifts.

Searched online for brewery tours that included this and finally decided on Austin Brewery Tours. Almost daily tours, online booking was so easy, and we got a reminder, a couple of days earlier to our tour, via email. Tour starts at noon. Meetup time was 11:30am. At around 11:25am the van was there. Out comes Shane, owner and tour guide. He immediately introduced himself, thanked us for being on time and proceeded to ask us our names and where we were from. Once the other people taking the tour arrived, we were all introduced and in the van we went. During the time we were driving, he would ask us questions to get to know us better, and see the style of beers we liked. He also gave us an intro of each of the breweries we would visit. He made the time driving pass by fast and welcomed all questions we could have. At each of the breweries, he explained the process and what we had included in the price of the tour. At Jester King, they even had a special release and he bought a sample of each (which was not included in the price but he gifted us with it) making sure we had the complete experience. You can tell he enjoys doing these tours and meeting the people. He even took us to Revolution - which was in front of one of the breweries we visited - to try locally made flavored gin. So greateful he allowed us to do this quick stop - this was delicious, and gave me the opportunity to talk more with one of the ladies on the tour, exchanging ideas on recipes with the gin we had just tried. Shane is grate at incorporating everyone in the tour and conversations. He allows you plenty of time to enjoy each brewery and every beer you choose. He is now friends with the staff at each of these breweries, which works on the advantage of everyone in the tour since we got excellent/ friendly service at each stop. Best part of this all, is you meet new people, get to enjoy all the beer you can drink, and don't have to drive. Great way to spend a day in Austin. If looking for a beer tour, look no further, this is it!
