It's quite an experience. Our tour guide, Annabelle, was funny and insightful. We did the beginner's tour ($22.50 for adults), and it was an hour round trip for slight incline/declines and low ceilings, though there are wider areas in the cavern. Would recommend for a nice, easy walk, with lots of fun sights. The more difficult tours include deeper in or more strenuous areas and even a 4hr crawl anywhere from 7inch-1.5ft high caves. Don't touch, take, or leave anything in the caves, but admire the beauty of the ancient cave formations! It does get a little humid and warm inside, and there are a few wet spots and puddles, so bring comfortable shoes! I watched some tiktok that was talking about how there were caverns in Texas. I had little expectations since right next to a highway does not seem like a very nice place for a cave tour. The last cave that I went to was in Kentucky. We went to Mammoth cave, a national park and in my opinion Inner Space Cavern was an even better experience! I am completely shocked with how cool this place was. They had a little bit of everything with bats, stalactites and stalagmites, complete darkness, and lots of history about the cave. The cave is also pretty big! The tour last about an hour. We were able to buy our tickets once we got there but there are options to buy your tickets online too. I highly recommend coming to visit it. We went during our visit to Austin, and it was worth it to drive a little out of the city for this. Tips: -You can even come here and do a high adventure tour. These tours will have you crawling, climbing, and squeezing through tight spots instead of walking on the pathways. Not for those who are claustrophobia haha. -No strollers allowed. A really cool cave system near Austin that was discovered during the construction of I-35. They offer multiple tours per day, but do arrive early to purchase your tickets. We came on a Sunday morning and the tour was about 30 people. The guide was super knowledgeable and shared the history of the cave, how and when it formed, how it was discovered, and its significance to the ecosystem of Central Texas. We got to see lots of tiny bats, stalagmites and stalactites of all sizes, and even be showered in "cave kisses." (Can you guess what those are?) The tour lasts about 60 minutes and is super chill. Just make sure to bring non-slippery shoes because the cave is damp and you need to walk on inclined surfaces. While I found the experience to be really cool, some of my friends weren't quite as amazed because they had visited more impressive cave systems that are only about an hour south from the Inner Space Cavern. I'd still recommend checking it out at least once. read more

With often slippery terrain and low hanging cavern roofs, he was sure to repeat to adventurers to watch their steps and heads. The cavern is dimly lit and about a mile or so long. With frequent breaks to hear about the caverns history, comfortable shoes are recommended. There are several tours, so if you want to make it quick, the adventure tour is the best one. There is also a great little gift shop at the end and a dollar off coupon online for entrance. The ticket taker at the desk was the only reason this review is receiving a 4 instead of 5 stars. Conveniently off of 35 lies a mesmeric cavern with a few billboards guiding the way. All I have to say is follow the signs, exit, park & purachase a ticket. If you've never been on a cave your, it's definitely worth stopping by here for one since it's right off the highway and easy to get too - just outside of Austin. Our tour guide Mindy was fun, informative and kept our 11 year old son engaged and interested. The tour is about an hour and a half and has a mile of gentle walking. It really is like stepping into another world. Not as cold as the other caves we've visited - high humidity and about 78 degrees. I've done both the Adventure Tour and Hidden Passages Tour (on separate visits) and enjoyed myself on both. If you're in the Austin area and have never explored a cave before, I think you can't go wrong visiting here and would recommend going for the combo pass to check out both. However I will say the Adventure tour is probably skippable if this isn't your first time visiting a cave. Having done the full Texas Cave Trail, I'd say the main downside of Inner Space Cavern compared to the other 4 is the degree to which this cave has been commercialized (likely due to it being by far the closest to Austin proper). It gets super crowded on weekends and they allow group sizes to be large enough that you have to be pretty persistent in staying near the front of your group, otherwise you'll miss out on a lot of what they have to say. The other downside I experienced is that you can't buy tickets to the Hidden Passages tour in advance. There's only 3 tours per day with 10 spots (in theory on the latter) and I struggled to come up with a good reason for them to do this. The first time I tried to come I arrived a half hour before the tour for them to tell me it was already overbooked, so I went for the Adventure Tour instead. The solution seems to be either, go on a non busy day (difficult if you're working since the tours are 11,1, and 3), arrive way in advance and find other things to do in the area, or go for the combo tour. Given all of that, I do think the Hidden Passages tour is worth the hassle if you're into this kind of experience. It's a flashlight lit tour that was unique among the commercial caves available to be toured in Texas. The tour guides are all friendly and informative. I went on President's Day since I was off work and found it to be much less crowded- I arrived a half hour before the tour and about half the spots were still open. However the theortical 10 was once again overbooked into a 13 person group. Not a huge deal, but for a tour where the whole point is going through tight channels, it does make it more difficult to hear your tour guide. Overall, I'd say Inner Space Cavern is the cave I enjoyed the least of the 5 on the Texas Cave Trail, but I still enjoyed my experience. If you're in Austin and looking to explore a cave for the first time, I don't think the quality difference is worth the additional hour+ drive to one of the others. read more

The caves are very cool. Easily the most rocks I've ever seen. Our tour guide decided to take this trip off the rails early on and bully the disabled guy in the group. She hyper-fixated on this poor man for an hour, all while chiding children for being children, an Asian couple for not speaking English, and slapping her flashlight repeatedly against a rock that's apparently half a billion years old. She had no apparent knowledge of the cave, ignoring the only display in the entire cave and instead pointing her flashlight at a bunch of bones while saying, "That's a bone. That's a bone. That's a bone." Absolutely riveting stuff. On the way out she took one more swing at a child for being annoying and the disabled guy for being too slow and "too cool for the cave." PROS: (1) Interesting experience CONS: (1) Our tour guide seemed really disinterested. The guide for the group we passed seemed much more enthusiastic. (2) Bad grammar leads to misunderstandings. Coupon says "Good for Adventure Tour and Hidden Passages Tour," meaning you have to buy both tours to use the coupon, since they said "and". In fact, coupon is good for *either* tour, so they should have used "or". (3) First Adventure Tour doesn't start until 30 minutes after they open, not disclosed anywhere on the site. (4) Website needs a lot of work. Phone # not visible on the home page. Hours of operation ridiculously scrolls across the screen like it's 1997, and you could easily miss the part you're looking for if it scrolls out of range before you could see it. The Adventure Tour was great. Our tour guide, Ryland, was very knowledgeable and answered so many questions. The cave system was incredibly cool to see. The tour was about a mile walk with stops along the way where the guide would explain the formation. The only downside is that young (3/4 year olds and infants) are allowed on the tour. These kids are not interested in the tour and were constantly running around... like clockwork, the kid falls and starts crying and whining so much that it over powered the tour guide's voice for a good part of the tour. The place was a little busy on a Saturday afternoon. We bought our tickets and waited about a half hour before the next tour. In the mean time we walked around and checked out the gift shop. They also have a place for food and drinks if your heart desires. Once the tour began we were led underground. The first stop while inside was to see if anyone wanted a pro picture while in the cave. No thanks but a few families did it and picked up later up on top. The tour overall was just okay. It was filled with annoying other families, corny jokes, and humidity enough to make my hair curl and frizz. It was about an hour and 15 mins of my life that I will not get back. Your system goes into overload as you are trying to take in that you are in an actual cave under I35. In some area of the cave, they have lights out and you rethink what pitch black means. Occasionally you will see a bat or two and be in awe or freak out. The tour guide is informative, funny and has a lot of patience so it is definitely worth going. However be careful and wear shoes with a good grip, it can be slippery in certain part of the cave. Okay, I really had minimal expectations for this tour when I took my niece and nephew while they visited town but I was pleasantly surprised at how awesome it was! The tour guide was a young man who couldn't have been more engaging. He seemed to really love his job and it showed through every stage of the tour. We went on the adventure tour which was more feasible for us as we have a 3yr old along with us. Its an hour long tour with 1 mile walk. The formations were very good and some can be left to your imagination as to what they look like. A tall person has to duck at a few spots. This is a great activity for the adventurous ones out there. There are three different routes you can take based on your experience with caves. Even though this was my first time, I chose the intermediate tour. It is called the Hidden Passage tour. It is about an hour and a half for about $26. I suggest you wear active wear and comfortable shoes because there will be a lot of walking. There are steep points and many holes in the cave. It can also get really slippery so slip resistant shoes are advised. Also, you cannot bring any food or drink on the tour. It is really fun to come here and learn about the caves. I suggest everyone do it at least once. read more

We loved his humor but that he was also knowledgeable about the cave, what's in it, and he seemed to like his job which is always nice. We also got to see an extremely rare millipede or centipede, not sure which it was, but Nick pointed it out and was even excited himself as they're very rare.
