We decided to try Ikkyu after someone recommended it to us. We arrived and noticed the taped menus on the front window. After a few moments of pondering, we decided to follow through and try it out. Upon entering, we were greeted by a lovely server and directed to the cashier to place our order. We ordered and sat outside. While our food was ready very quickly, we were very disappointed in the quality of our meal. The food was served on styrofoam plates with poor presentation. The onigiri and salmon roll tasted as if they were made with canned seafood, and I found a bug inside the spicy tuna. Additionally, the rice they used didn't seem to have mirin or sugar and seemed to be plain rice rather than sushi rice. We left our meals on the table largely uneaten and took our business elsewhere. I might as well have my employer deduct Ikkyu from my paycheck along with health insurance, because they are both essentials. My wife and I eat here at least twice a month. Ikkyu's Tonkatsu both is some of the best Ramen broth I have ever had! Coupled with their homemade noodles, they are on track to have the best ramen ever! If only their pork didn't fall so short. As a patron it doesn't really matter what you are used to or want to experience for your comfort it's all about their rules. Over the years I have came here and enjoy the food a lot. I was very excited to try Ikkya for takeout dinner tonight because I saw pictures here on Yelp of the spicy tuna donburi and I had to have it. I was pleasantly surprised to find that my meal came with a cup of hot miso soup which I downed in the parking lot while sitting in my car as the rain trickled down the windows. The spicy tuna don was delicious and satisfied my craving! It came with some cucumbers which I doused in chili flakes. I saw all the positive reviews for the spicy tuna don volcano style so I had to try it! It was delicious! It reminded me of a poke bowl but the fish was finely chopped instead of in chunks. After months of wanting to try this place, I finally did. it's self-service and you access the menu online using a QR code. I had udon noodles with shrimp tempura and a California roll. It was hot, fast and fresh. And the staff was super nice. All in all it was a pleasant experience. They offer things like rice, bowls, and even a volcano bowl that I'll check out next time I'm there. This is solid Americanized Japanese style restaurant, which I think probably meets the pallet of most Americans. I always give extra marks to a place where you can watch the cooks cook, and this place has that. They serve the food in to-go containers, which is a pandemic holdover and not very eco-friendly, but it doesn't really takeaway from the dining experience. Five star for this restaurant largely because of the value. I love that the plates are fairly cheap because that means I get to try a larger variety of food on date night! I was visiting my grandfather and my uncle took me and my son here because my son and I love ramen. It was really good. I missed the egg that I normally get in my Houston ramen. Flavor was great, small little spot that had a nice atmosphere, nothing super amazing but the food was great. Service was quick and friendly. My uncle goes here quite often he said. I recommend! As luck would have it I was doing some shopping at Lee Lee's International Market (which you should definitely check out) and it happened to be one of the three days they make ramen (Thurs, Fri & Sat). So after getting various asian goodies at Lee Lee's I went to Ikkyu for a late lunch of Tonkotsu Ramen. This isn't a fancy place, but the food is quality. There were a number of people in line (often a good sign), but after a short wait I put in my ramen order. They have a number of different bases and spicness levels, but I felt like going for something classic. At about $10 it's one of the better ramen deals in town. After a short wait, my noddles were done and my number was called. The broth was flavorful without being overly salty. I added some spicy togarashi to add a little bit of heat. You add in the obligatory hot pink fish cake, bamboo shoots, ground pork, nicely chewy noodles and you got yourself a train to happy stomach-opolis. I want to come back another time donburi. They have some sushi rolls available, but I did order any, but there's always next time... and there will be a next time! read more

Ikkyu is my favorite spot in town for two things: ramen and spicy tuna don. They absolutely blow everyone else out of the water on those! Their ramen is phenomenal; it's only served Thursday through Saturday because they spend all week making the broth. It achieves a depth of flavor that's hard to beat, and the ramen is delicious from its base up. The noodles are perfection as well, in taste, texture, and chew. It comes with pork, scallion, egg, bamboo shoots, and fish cake. My favorite is the spicy tonkatsu ramen. You can add extra noodles or extra spice, but I've always found it great just in their standard serving of it. The spicy tuna don is their other star. It's a heaping serving of spicy tuna on sushi rice, topped with scallions and seaweed. I always order it volcano style, which means it comes drizzled with eel sauce and spicy mayo. It's a super delicious, filling bowl. The space itself is very casual and certainly nothing fancy, but when the food is this good, who cares? Ikkyu doesn't need frills to deliver their best food. They have a good selection of ramen, sushi and other bowls. Couldn't decide between the ramen or sushi, so got some of both! This place has been top level since they opened long ago. The owner, Hiro, owned Samurai (Roger and oracle) since the early 90s and sold it a while back to open Ikkyu. Samurai was my first job 20 years ago, and I have followed Hiro and his food ever since. He focus on quality is second to none. Everything from the Ramen, to rice dishes, to the sushi is amazing.
