    Chashu Don
    Taric W.

Eclectic, fast casual Asian food that appeals to anyone who loves ramen or spicy food. What I like: Look, I'm infamously not a noodle person, but my other half can't get enough of their rich, warming tonkotsu. I've opted for the chashu don, featuring the same tasty pork belly and it was decent, even though it could have used better toppings. Did I mention the interior is pretty trendy? Anime nerds will appreciate it for sure. What needs work: The menu is way too hit-or-miss and there are some duds. The curry looked appealing, but it was so salty I cannot see myself giving it another try. They have a lone sushi roll--the Vegas Roll, and on the VERY rare occasion it's not out of stock, you shouldn't bother. You may also find yourself routinely waiting quite some time to get your meal. Overall I think this is going to be a staple for ramen lovers. But everything else might be a bit disappointing.

Typically serving Japanese curry rice with pork cutlet n shrimp tempura!! Good enough food quality that they were good favor in curry sauce, tempura were fired right on, not too much oily!! There's a little dry on Pork cutlet ... it's a good average Japanese Curry shop! Services were providing for delivering foods after you bought in count cashier desk!! Plus they serve Ramen too!! There are many varieties Japanese foods majorly included Curry Rice n Ramen!!!

Another stopped in on a whim visit. Awesome Asian inspired decor. Very clean. Menus are displayed on the wall, again on the counter and then yet again at the register. Lots of appetizers, curry dishes and ramen. Ordered 2 dumpling appetizers, a chicken ramen bowl and a pork ramen bowl. Hope you are brushed up on your chopstick usage because there wasn't a fork in sight. Dumplings were perfectly fried, with a very savory flavor, the dipping sauce although cold as ice, I prefer mine room temperature or warmer was a nice flavor. Now on to the ramen, I personally think my previous favorite ramen house has been dethroned. This ramen was AMAZING! Perfectly soft cooked egg with savory flavor, the ramen noodles were a perfect al dente and didn't get mushy, amazing broth. Interestingly enough I can usually eat a whole bowl in one visit and this one I was full at the half way point. JA Ramen has a nice selection of Asian beverages and a soda fountain as well. The only downside if there was any and this is no fault of JA Ramen was the price. 2 appetizers 2 bowls, 2 drinks, $58 dollars. Unfortunately it appears that this is the world we live in no matter where you eat. All in all I will be back as this is now in my opinion the best Ramen house in Tucson. Happy eating all!

First time here and I got the Spicy Miso Ramen and my fiancée got the Pork Curry and it was VERY good. Both dishes had a ton of flavor and the pork in my ramen was very tender and not chewy. We will definitely be back!!

Spicy Tonkotsu 7/10 Broth is flavorful and somewhat creamy. Meat is dry and hard; it should be soft and tender. Portion is just right Curry Ramen 6/10 Flavorful but again, meat is not soft and tender Shoyu 5/10 Despite it is a soy (salty) based broth, it was too salty. Meat issue as above. Ambience is nice, fit to hang out with friends for lunch or dinner. Staff is friendly.

I have to say I'm shocked at how good the ramen is here. I got the dumpling ramen and wow it was tasty, and portion size is awesome. The vegetable tempura was awesome and my daughter got the vegan ramen and said it was so good she got spicy and said it was actually spicy for her which she loves spice. The menu is extensive and the service is as amazing.

Came here for dinner on a Friday night and it was about 80% full. Line to order went pretty quickly. We ordered our food, got a number, our drinks, and then found a seat. They serve you your food by the number they gave you. Food came out hot and we enjoyed everything we ordered. We got 3 dishes (2 ramen & 1 curry rice) and it came out to about $50. Everything was delicious but I think I enjoyed the curry the most. We ordered a spicy 7 and it wasn't spicy enough for us. We definitely want to come back and try a spicy 10. Overall, good food and we'd definitely be back.

One of our favorite Ramen places. They also have great curry dishes. I get the chicken curry (5 heat). Perfect not too hot just right. 1 to 10 are your choices Velvet got the veggie ramen. She loved it. Very reasonable prices. Order at the counter.

Last night my husband and I were downtown for a concert and we wanted to try something new. We wanted something that was quick and casual but wasn't "fast food." We saw JA on the corner and it was perfect. The inside was clean and spacious, but casual as well with some fun dragonball posters on the wall. The menu was easy to understand and I really liked that they provided pictures of the menu items. If you are ordering curry you can customize the spice level as well. We ordered at the front and once ready, it was brought right to us. The fountain drinks are self serve and they did have a little table set up for the water. Our food arrived quickly and was delicious. The price might seem high, but the portion size is worth it! I tried something new with a Claim Curry at spice level 2. The flavor was great and the rice was good was just personally not a fan of the claims texture. I will definitely be back.

Tucson has tons of good spots for noodles and I'm happy to add this to the list! The building isn't much to look at, but the menu is large and the ramen is great! The only thing I wish was that they offered chile oil and other condiments at the tables.

Asian food in Tucson seems to be a specialty. I went to Ja with some friends who had recommended it and did not disappoint. Their menu is giant with a variety of ramen and curry dishes. You can request different levels of spicy for each dish too. It was a casual and modern atmosphere that made it a really fun place to try something new. The chef was so personable and suggested I tried the chicken curry with vegetables since I hadn't tried that before and I really enjoyed it. It was a little bit expensive and I was hoping to get a little bit more chicken, but what I had was crispy, well-cooked, and loaded with flavor. My friends who had the ramen really loved it and I am excited to go back and try that.

Spicy tonkatsu ramen (no green onion, no bean sprouts), temupra appetizer. $26.09, August 2023.

It's a great little ramen shop that has more than ramen. Just about perfect, but not quite there. I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could with only a couple of minor points. The hits: The ramen is good. I got the spicy tonkatsu ramen and it delivered with a thick broth and to my pleasant surprise, lots of ginger, which I love. A lot of ramen places just don't add that much, if at all. The spiciness was at a good level for me and the noodles, while thin (not my favorite), weren't hard. I don't know why every ramen I've been to in Tucson goes for the thinnest noodles possible but it is what it is. I also got the tempura appetizer for $10 which was good as well. Finally a place that's not afraid to add salt to their veggies. Just about every other place uses just unseasoned veggies which leads to a bland experience. Good sauce as well. The misses: The chashu. Thick, tough, and overdone. Good ramen chashu should melt in your mouth but this one needed a hard bite. The service hit on one of my pet peeves which is when you walk up to the counter and people can see you but no one helps or gets help because they're not a cashier. I waited about 30 seconds for the cashier to come around a corner while the two cooks just talked to each other. Not a long wait, but I just don't like standing there and being ignored by staff. The tempura needed more sauce. If you order it, ask for an extra side. The rest of the experience was excellent. Good parking, free soda refills (and large cups for ice water), clean and open atmosphere, easy-to-read menu, just a nice place overall. Next I'll try their chicken katsu curry. Looked excellent.

The red miso definitely satisfied my spicy tastes if you are the type of person who can eat a bag of hot Cheetos without blinking you'll be fine but if you're sensitive to spice you might want to skip that option. On the menu they do have chili peppers next to the items to indicate the spice level. The portions are BIG and definitely worth it. I'm paying attention to…read moreseasoning, temperature, texture, balance, consistency, and all the small things that tell you whether somebody in that kitchen actually understands what they're doing. Ikkyu absolutely does. The first thing that stood out to me was the ramen. A good bowl of ramen isn't about throwing a bunch of toppings over noodles and calling it a day--the broth has to carry the entire bowl. This one had the kind of depth that tells you time and technique went into it. Rich and savory without becoming heavy, properly seasoned without tasting like somebody simply reached for more salt, and enough body to coat your palate and keep you going back for another spoonful. That balance is harder to achieve than people realize. The noodles, broth, toppings, and seasoning all worked together instead of fighting for attention. Nothing felt like it was there just for presentation. It tasted deliberate. There's a difference between food that follows a recipe and food that comes from years of repetition, adjustment, and understanding, and Ikkyu tastes like the latter. What I probably appreciate most is that the restaurant doesn't try to disguise itself as something it isn't. It's casual, comfortable, straightforward Japanese food. No unnecessary theatrics. No giant price tag attached to the atmosphere. The focus is where it should be: the food. Service was quick and friendly, the restaurant had that relaxed neighborhood feel, and there's something refreshing about finding a place that seems more interested in feeding people well than trying to impress them with everything surrounding the plate. From one kitchen person to another, I have a lot of respect for restaurants like this. Making something look complicated is easy. Taking something that appears simple and executing it consistently with depth, balance, and flavor is much harder. Ikkyu feels like one of those Tucson places you could easily drive past without realizing how much experience is sitting behind that counter. This is the kind of local restaurant I want to support. Five stars from me, and I'll absolutely be back.
