I had a terrible experience here last night. First of all, when you are paying $100 a person for a meal, without wine, you should expect certain things.
You should have nice service where water and bread comes to your table promptly. You should be asked if you want a cocktail before dinner. You should be told about specials, especially if the menu is really boring, like this one. If you ask for something that was forgotten, you should not get snotty looks and talked down to by a rude waiter. Yes, I was annoyed that we didn't get bread, water, asked for cocktails, told about the specials. Response by our waiter was to be talked to rudely and sarcastically, which increased the tension. Maddening was the table next to us which received all of those things by another waiter, who had assistants bringing bread water, etc., while we waited helplessly. Our waiter had no one helping him. I wonder why. I would not have helped him either.
The menu was boring. You would think that menus in this price range would be somewhat creative or have ingredients that are fresh / local / sustainable. Fish should be wild and if endangered/overfished fish, it should be sustainably caught. (Chilean Sea Bass). A waiter should at least understand a question about Chilean Sea Bass in a town like Austin and in a restaurant of this caliber. Farmed salmon does not belong on this menu. Not at over $30 per serving.
We ordered appetizers first. We had crabcake and scallops wrapped in bacon. The crabcake tasted fresh but was bland. Scallops were perfectly cooked but were gritty. Crunch crunch crunch. They also came out suspiciously fast - like instantly. Were they pre-made? They came before our bread.
In taking the dinner order, I heard a condescending lecture on the difference between a rib-eye and a filet mignon. Seriously. Did he think I landed here from Mars? His description, by the way, was a description of how a rib-eye was more flavorful. No word on how it was prepared. No word on the thick covering of pepper on it. Just that it is "flavorful." Dude, we know what steak is in Texas. Assuming we don't know the difference between a filet and a rib-eye is just weird.
Anyway, I cannot even express how completely disappointed I was with my meal. My rib-eye was cooked ok, but it was the toughest piece of meat I have ever had. I could not eat half of it. My husband's porterhouse was very nice and tender, however. I had a hard time believing that this rib-eye was an aged prime piece of meat. Sinews were clearly visible throughout. This was not marbling, this was a visible piece of sinew sticking up through the middle that I could not chew through. I can recognize that in a steak and I avoid those steaks. I frankly highly suspect that this rib-eye was not prime and it certainly did not taste aged. This was highway robbery. $45 for this? Are you kidding me? really? The creamed corn had a weird camphor off-taste to it.
Servers grandly walked around to our table with a giant platter of fresh tomatoes and onions. The tomatoes were not fancy heirlooms or anything -- they were just grocery store tomatoes. Weird. They treated the distribution of these tomatoes like they were serving something rare and wonderful. They were sliced tomatoes -like you get on your burger at Wendy's.
I had a glass of wine. When he brought it to me, there was 3/4 of an inch of wine in the bottom of the glass. Again, I thought, are you kidding me? You can't spring for even a decent pour when I order a $10 glass of wine with a $200 meal? I asked our VERY rude waiter if this was a normal pour. He looked sourly at me and said, "Yes." Nice. Thanks.
This was somewhat of a special occasion for me. My new law office turned a profit this month; something that I was pretty excited about. At the same time, we have had a personal loss in our lives and have been dealing with a great deal of sadness for the past week and a half. We wanted to splurge a bit and just treat ourselves a little bit better. But - I felt completely and totally cheated by this experience. Sadly, the couple next to us were having a completely different time. They were asked about "their" special occasion; they received water, bread and were told about specials. They even got baked potatoes! How did they do that? That wasn't on the menu!
The maitre 'd was very nice at least. He even came to our table and asked how things were. I was clearly smoldering at the crappy service and time I was having and he asked if he could make anything better. At this point, the only thing that could have made it better was for me to leave. But it was very nice that he asked . Oh - and, since it was my business that was doing well, I wanted to take my husband out for dinner. Yet, the waiter, in all his sexism, placed the bill squarely in front of my husband. Is it 1950? I will never be back.
To top it off? Food poisoning. I was sick for a week. read more
