Excellent space where a queer, masculine-of-center human can get a short, professional, and age appropriate haircut for a fair price, and not have to worry about leaving looking like a "teenage gym-bro." I have seen Kristin in the past, and most recently had Elena take care of me. Always feel like I am in capable and professional hands, but also like it is ok to be myself, sing along to chill rap music, crack jokes, and relax. I was so pleasantly surprised when Elena literally handed me a comb and said "show me" what you do to your own hair so shortly after initially assessing the situation a bit first. It took me a while to unwrap this, but by the time I left, I can't explain how much that meant to me (as a very hands on person who always has trouble finding words to express what I am looking for in a haircut). Every other haircut in my 3+ decades of life has ENDED with "Run your hands through. Does that feel OK?" ... But to be asked at the TOP of the visit, in a genuinely curious tone, before cutting anything, essentially 'How is this going to ACTUALLY look tomorrow and every day until you come back?' and not just 'How do you want ME to style this TODAY' .. was really empowering in a way I did not expect, so THANKS Elena! read more

OK SO I don't usually post reviews like this, but this is bananas. I went to Emily at "I run with Scissors" in Eugene, and had the worst experience I have ever had. Do not ever go to her. Ever. This makes me super frusterated especially since she has great reviews. So, we decided on a cut, and color/bleach when talking about price she quoted me $130 and I ended up paying more because she said she only quoted me on the color. Which is weird because we were both very clear during the consultant that I was getting a pixie, and the cut, and rose gold color. Anyways, when I went in for the cut I kept explaining my bangs needed to be tapered across my forhead like the picture. She kept saying she wasn't sure what I meant, over and over, eventually, I gave up, and thought maybe she was getting to frusterated to listen, and since I was getting it died a week later we would try again. She even said next week if there was anything that I needed for her to fix, she would, next week. So, I felt OK. The next week when I went back I tried explaining it again. It was to long. The point in the picture on her cheek, the longest point, was on her upper cheek bone and not on mine, I showed her pictures of the hair cut I wanted, and what she gave me (Straightened. I assured her during the cut I would be daily straighting my hair) she said the picture that I took of me was very choppy and she didn't know that I would be straighting it. Which I DID tell her. Anyways, I explained the 2 points on the long side of hair, the other picture it was at her upper cheek bone pointing, and mine was near my chin, and I explained the bangs again. She said it was my fault for straighting it so straight I should curve the straightner. After about 10 mins, of her still not understanding, she called over her coworker. Mellissa I believe her name was. She fixed it and did a great job. She spent a good 20 or 30 mins fixing the bulk and having my bangs taper to the side. Emily told me that was hard to do as she is very prideful and doesn't like to ask for help. I should of just stopped then and walked away. During the dye I showed her pictures of what rose goldI liked, it seems she took her own interpretation of things, and went with it, she said the 2 colors I showed her had more red in it, and I explained it wasn't the 'red' I liked but the brightness. How vibrant and bright gold it was. When rinsing my hair of the color she said "Can I put this on it? It's a temp dye" I didn't know what to say, so I said yes. She explained it wasn't as red as I wanted since I liked the reddish rose golds. Uh OK. I asked if it was temp wouldn't it just wash out and leave me with a color I didn't want? She said eventually it would wash out. Like, 4 or 5 washes. As she is showing me my hair I said I liked it. I really did. But, as she told me, in each lighting it would change and to send her a picture in the daylight. I told her I loved it but the fact she put a temp hair dye on over it made me uneasy. If it isn't dyed a color I wanted or would like, it should of been redied. Not put on a temp fix. She said if it fades I could come back to her. I assumed that meant for free. Not pay to have it redied. Here is my next conversation a few days later with Emily. I did not have a chance to send her a pic since it was 2 mins later. I was also waiting on Rose Gold Shampoo she ordered. Don't think it will let me post our texts but I asked her to fix it because it was discolored and she told me to go somewhere else and pay, didn't want to give me my Money back, finally gave me half back and refused to fix her terrible dye job. And told me never to come back. The blonde pic is the cut I wanted. The pic with brown hair is what she gave me before her coworker fixed it the red colored is her color. read more

Made an appointment with Kristin for a haircut. She asked lots of questions to figure out what I wanted (when I really wasn't sure what exactly I wanted), she was very personable and friendly, and best of all she did an absolutely amazing cut! Not only does my hair look and feel better, but I know the cut itself is flawless. This place isn't a "cheapie" 15 minute haircut salon, but I think the attention and the skill is well worth the price. After talking to Kristin about updating my color, I'm already on the hunt for what I want to do, and I'll be booking another appointment soon. I've been coming here for quite a while...maybe a year, year and a half?. I see Emily, and she always does a *fantastic* job. She really listens to what I'm asking for, and if she's not sure what I'm getting at (which happens, because I never know how to describe what I want very well), she has a way of asking the right questions until we can reach an understanding, which I really appreciate. I always come away feeling happy and excited about my hair, never feeling like I want to go home and re-style it myself like some places I've been. I don't typically leave reviews however I just had my first terrible salon experience in 30 years. Booked for trim and color with Melissa, and spent less than 5 minutes in the salon before being told that this "relationship wouldn't work out."?!?! First, I am a shy and introverted individual. Im also a medical professional that deals with people every day in stressful situations and am always calm and collected and understanding. I've been getting my hair dyed the same color for years without any issues. When I told Melissa what color I wanted she brought out the swatches. When I pointed to the color I wanted I began to sense she was frustrated. I was quiet while she was trying to work out how to achieve the color (dark brown mixed with red....that's it. Nothing crazy). She took the swatches away, then brought over two individual swatches. I expressed that maybe the red she picked out wasn't the one I wanted and requested to take a look at the reds again. At this point she actually stated that she was frustrated and that this relationship "wouldn't work out." I was in shock. I've said maybe a total of 5 sentences since walking into the salon, all very calmly and at no moment with any frustration, but apparently requesting to see a different shade of red was enough to make Melissa decide she couldn't work with me. I calmly picked up my stuff and left. I planned my day around this visit. I just wanted my hair dyed the same color I've been having it dyed for years for the upcoming holiday parties. After much trial and error over the uears I've figured out which brown and which red achieves the best effect. I've never had a hair stylist give up just because I made a single request to take a look at another shade of the same color. I really just want to emphasize that at no point was I rude, confrontational, argumentative, or expressed restistance or frustration. I simply asked to see a different shade of red. The complete lack of basic conversation skills and fundamental professionalism was appalling. read more

Then I moved to Eug and had no one to help me out (ie, repair the aftermath) when the lure of frequent color changes became too strong to ignore. After one less-than-stellar home dye, I had so much damage and breakage. I called around to a few salons, looking for an opening that day. This is how I met Kristin, and she is *outstanding*. She gave me a graduated lob, officially known as The Best Cut I've Ever Had- not to mention a moisturizing treatment that remedied the straw-like mess of my hair. I had a great experience here. Their website offers online scheduling, including free 15-minute consults. In addition, you can sign up for text and email reminders which are handy for a busy person like me. I had a consult with Melissa. She was honest & realistic about what she could do for my hair in terms of cut and color, and promised to keep within my budget. I was able to get scheduled for an appointment fairly quickly, about two weeks later. Melissa was nice and chatty, and easy to interact with. The environment is very warm and welcoming and they offer beverages such as coffee and soda. My appointment went longer than estimated, but that was fine because my hair turned out amazing! This place is much more affordable than where I used to go -- a full color and cut over 3.5 hours ran at $140. Cuts alone were around $40 and were discounted to $25 with a color service. Although I'm not sure if the pricing is different for other stylists. All-in-all, a great experience. I will definitely be going here for my cuts and color touch-ups from now on! read more

First I want to say is Nani is an excellent hairstylist! There system for making appointments is messed up. You can't talk to a real person. You can't get a hold of anyone on the phone there, ever! If your running late or have a question the system does not allow for human contact. After staying on their parking lot waiting for someone to show up, which they never did. Than reschedule appt. Only to have them not show up I am reluctantly looking for a new stylist. I arrived at exactly 1030. The email I got said 1030 for my haircut. The week before I had an appt. But Noone was in the building. I sorry you feel I gave a false statement. I stand by my statement the whole thing. The scheduling has serious problems not being able to get a real person on the phone. I have never had any phone number to any of the stylists at your business, only the number at your building.Nani NEVER called me, never! I have no message on my voice mail. I don't like to get my hair cut. I also don't like facials, pedicures or manicures, or anything else that involves somebody picking at me and me giving them lots of money in return. I prefer to spend that time doing sports. One of the best hairstylists I've been to would take 2 hours to wash and cut my hair, and she always wanted to blow it dry. So I quit going there. That's 2 hours I could be biking or lifting weights. I put off getting my hair cut. So I have tried all kinds of places because I procrastinate and then try to get in the same day. So I've had some bad haircuts, and some that were not what I asked for, and gone to some barber schools. So I've shopped around. I got in on 3 hours notice. .......yeahhh I hate to talk crap about people and their services but, hey I gotta speak the truth, so.. (this is gonna be long, if you don't want to read that far, just scroll the the last paragraph) ***Okay, no need to read this if you're not Asian or other ethnic group with different hair needs than the majority of our college-town population......or if you have common hairstyling needs.*** So, as you can see in my pictures, I'm Asian. I know, it's the eyes. They're a big giveaway ;) Anyway, I normally cut my own hair and some friends' and have been for like 8 years just because I am always disappointed that stylists cannot give me what they THINK they can offer to me (not to mention unwillingness to pay over $40 for a haircut, I'm gonna say that anything more just sounds ridiculous and I could care less about expensive brand shampoo and whatnot). Since I let a friend of mine borrow my shears a couple years ago, she still has yet to give them back to me (I know, what a ho) and I don't talk to her anymore either for unrelated reasons.. I will usually go back to the Bay Area to get a hair trim while visiting family. And ... man, all I can say is, I've been to non-Asian hairstylists and seriously, no matter what they say, they can NOT cut Asian hair!! I wasn't fond of the idea of going back to CA for some time but I was in dire need to tame the growing mushroom that laid on top of my head, and I had seen good reviews for this place (none from Asians but hey, maybe they like to lay low..) and a groupon was what it took to bring me here. I went to see Chelsea (which was who the groupon was for) and I have to say, she's super nice and friendly for conversation making, but wow when it came to hair, she seemed pretty nervous yet daring enough to tell me how much experience she had in cutting hair. And I think her haircut looks cute, so I was like, maybe she's just one of those secret ninja awesome hair stylist incognito or something. BUT NO!! Okay let me just start my story now ha ha. Here's how the conversation rolled: Me: blah blah blah, oh yeah I just moved into the area like a year ago too. Actually...This is my very first time getting my hair cut in Eugene.. actually just in Oregon.. Last time I cut my hair was like 6 mths ago. Chelsea: Oh yeah? Well don't worry, you're in good hands :) Me: Awesome! I don't really go to hairdressers often though, it's just hard to find someone who can really get my hair the way I want it without overdoing it! Chelsea: Oh, yeah not many people can do Asian hair... *me: huh....??? *RED FLAG, RED FLAG** Chelsea: ..so I had training at [a few brand salons], your hair looks like a Toni&Guy cut, I can recognize that style anywhere. Me: No, it's not but cool thanks..! By the way, she hadn't started cutting yet. She just stared at my hair for a while with a pair of scissors in her hand. Then she whipped out a razor and just went around my whole head. When I saw that, I decided to remind her like at the beginning of my appointment, "oh by the way, I just want a really small trim, no changes, no length changes, just the split ends only and lighten the volume on the top, okay?" Chelsea: Oh I know :) ok cool thanks. ..... *razors* and then she got super nervous..... and she kept going. I was looking in the mirror and I got pissed and frustrated that I even stopped being able to make much conversation in the end!! I was like, Whoa, what the hell is she doing? She just then started chatting more with another stylist while chopping chunks off. I had a fucking grass patch in my head. The other stylist just looked at my hair and didn't say anything either, except, "Oh.. =)..."... Then when she paused, I was like, "Okay, so ---" Then she kept going, and it just got bad, I never had to do this before but I just exclaimed, "...STOP. OKAY sorry I'm done, Thanks." She couldn't even style my hair right, especially not without having an even more nervous look on her face. You could just tell she KNEW she did a bad job. I didn't wanna give her a hard time and I WAS actually very patient and calm, except telling her to stop what she was doing.. I just came out looking like I was found in a cardboard box in Springfield. I ended it with, "..This may possibly be my last haircut in Eugene." Perhaps harsh but I'm just being honest. I ended up having to wear a beanie literally every day for 9 weeks AND I would go to bed with my hoodie over my head..and it STILL didn't grow back properly. Even my friends and my bf were like, ...yeahhh it's not very good at all, I liked your original hair so much better. So.. if you're Asian, or perhaps you just have a different hairstyling need than the norm, I wouldn't suggest going to Chelsea. I'm sure she's good at other services though. Oh yeah, she usually charges $40 and offers 10% discounts to UO students, but I had a groupon for $20. read more

Nani did my hair for my wedding and it was perfect! Got my hair cut by her a week later and I love it. Nani is very easy to work with and good at what she does. A month ago I came in for a color correction. I'd been dying my naturally blonde hair with henna for about six months. Henna bonds with your hair and is very difficult and unpredictable to dye over. Melissa was able to get my hair from a bright red to a subtle strawberry blonde. Excellent results with minimal damage. read more

I've been to Sarah several times now. I always go with a picture of a hair style in hand and she always makes it work for my face shape. I'm of East Asian descent and we often have a hard time finding stylists who can make our hair look good. She also knows how to get my hair the perfect shades of brown without leaving brassiness. I don't know how the recession may have affected her and it's been over a year now, but she had always offered a combination of discounts and I ended up paying a total of $59 for both a cut and color, even with my long hair. This is not a trendy salon environment. However, the prices are as expensive as a formal salon. The building used to be a house and you can tell. If you're looking for the chic salon experience this is not for you. That being said, it is a quaint little shop and the staff is friendly and I received an amazing cut and color. I called on a Sunday morning to schedule an appointment and they were able to get me in that afternoon for a cut and highlight color. I tend to wait until the last minute to schedule my appointments so this was great for me. And open on a Sunday is a huge bonus. My appointment was with Emily. She was professional and took the time to help me decide what I wanted. I didn't feel rushed at all, even though I knew she was squeezing me in between clients. She was able to help me choose the color I wanted and make the highlights pop the way I wanted them to. It was a little spendy, but I was very happy with the results and I plan to go back. I have been going to Sara for my hair for about four years. She is great. I can't believe I haven't reviewed her before now! I had a lot of bad luck with hair stylists before I found Sara. I originally went to her to fix my botched hair color, and she was able to do it without using harsh dyes and chemicals--just stains every few months for a while. She also did my hair for my wedding and it turned out really well. For a few years when I was living in the Bay Area I would always wait to get my hair cut until I was visiting family in Eugene--that's how good she is--the San Francisco stylists couldn't steal me away :) I love that Sara always listens to what her clients want. I have long hair and in the past I'd go to someone asking for a trim and I'd leave with several inches cut off. Sara never does that. She is also really an artist--she can work from pictures and tailor the styles to work for your own hair/face. Recently I decided to try layering my long hair. I brought in some pictures of styles I liked, and Sara did an amazing job. It really looks great--I wish I'd done it a few years ago! Finally, Sara is also very affordable, and she doesn't push lots of expensive products, which I appreciate. read more

Every time she's cut my hair, no matter my mood or projected ideas of what style I want, I leave with a good look and always get compliments on my hair from my wife, co-workers, and friends! For any white guy hair from trendy/fashion-forward to business interview, I cannot recommend her highly enough! Save yourself from wasting your money, time, and frustration at going to a sports-bar type hair salon and book an appointment with Sara. I went to Sara when she was still located on Lawrence. I saw her for I think about a year and she would cut and color my hair and cut my husband's hair. She did a good job and I even referred people to her. My wedding was coming up and we talked over several appointments about her doing my hair and she offered to even come to the wedding venue and do my hair there. Well the day came for my scheduled appointment for a pre wedding run through and she never showed! She wasn't there. There was no sign on the door, no message on her voicemail and no one had tried to contact me. To this day (almost 4 years later) I have no clue what happened. I tried to call and was concerned about what had happened, but finally just got pissed. I ended up having to go to London salon to get my wedding hairstyle and really wasn't super impressed with their attitude or work. I usually dye my hair myself, but I decided to get it done professionally this time. My hair is a fire red and fades FAST! I don't have a lot of time to be doing it every month. I called this place and they got me an appointment the next day. Ill be honest, when I saw the place I wanted to leave. It looks like a shabby little unprofessional place, but I sucked it up an went inside. It's outside is very deceiving and looks nice and comfortable inside. I picked a color, she does my hair, and even cut my boyfriend hair while mine was processing. It was just a really comfortable experience. I only gave it four stars because the lady didn't really know how to cut my boyfriends hair. I highly suggest this place if you're looking to get your hair dyed. read more

The most nerve-wracking part about going to any salon is when the stylist hands you the handheld mirror to look at their work and they stare at you until you give them the typical "looks great, thanks!" response. But sometimes you get home to look it over a little closer in detail and realize that your hair, in fact, does not look great at all. This unfortunately was my case at this salon. Lora came off as nervous and not very confident, which in turn made me feel a little uneasy, but she had already washed my hair (with warm water, which is a no-no for color treated hair like mine, but I digress) and I was just getting a basic trim so I saw it through. I now know that was a mistake. I spent 50 dollars at this place only to get home and realize that it is very choppy and uneven. Will definitely trust my gut feeling next time. read more
