Food - my husband is always searching for the best taro balls. these were ok but might have also been better if we didn't come during a power outage. will have to try them again. i got the ube milk tea w/ ube boba. i think its fresh ube kind of like ube halaya. it was not sweet at all and i think i would actually prefer it a little sweeter. Service - very friendly. they let us place an order even though the power had been out for about an hour and just turned back on. but they had some issues getting all of their systems back online so our drinks were actually ready before we could pay. Ambiance - very cute shop. no one was in there at the time because the power went out!

When we first moved into the neighborhood, we were looking for a quick spot to grab food before my night shift and Hyson came up as an option! Their banh mi are good and they are kind enough to cut them in half, which was perfect because I could eat half now and save the other half for my shift meal. I got the salted cream coffee which was delicious and strong. My fiancé got the honeydew smoothie which was also good and didn't have that artificial powder flavor so I think they use fresh fruit :) The service was quick and the workers were kind. It's easily accessible by metro as it's right by the G-line bus stop. I will be coming back to try more drinks and the other food options!

UPDATE: 04/2025 Hyson has reopened after a month of renovations as well as adding some new items to the menu! Inside has a more polished feel, making it feel more inviting. An addition to the menu they are now serving a variety of banh mis and DYI soft serve. The soft serve contraption is quite unique and you can add a shot of espresso for a creamy affogato (check out their Instagram to see it in action). I do love the fact that they've moved away from being just a dessert/coffee shop. In the morning Hyson has a breakfast combo. A mini banh mi and coffee for $9.99. It wasn't clear on the details if its just a specific banh mi or if you get to choose one of them. But the staff is super friendly and helpful so if you have any questions they'll be happy to answer you. The banh mi: I had ordered the Grilled Chicken and Grilled Pork Banh mi ($8 each). It comes with the usual veggies, pickled carrots, daikon, cilantro, cucumber and jalapeno. It was tasty. My only complaint was that the ratio of filling to bun wasn't great. Filling was lacking and very thin. Bread didn't seem toasted. But over all a 3/5 stars. With new concepts there are going to be kinks and adjustments will happen with time. So take everything I say with a grain of salt and try it yourself. Not going to lie, I'd still and always will go for the coffee. Especially the Sesame Cream Coffee. My personal favourite in pretty much all of Capital Hill and dare I say Seattle? Other places don't seem to match up to the black sesame cream that Hyson does. 5/5. Next time I'm there I'll have to try the Special Banh Mi Combo with a choice of coffee, cause who doesn't love a good deal?

Excited to have a new boba option in Madison Valley. I tried Ube milk tea with homemade Ube boba and the savory bahn croffle as a late afternoon snack before workout. Both are decisions and satisfying. I chose 0% sweetness and the Ube flavor still came through nicely. The Ube boba has the right level of chewiness. If I could stay longer, I would have ordered seconds.

Black Classic Milk Tea

I tried the jasmine and black classic milk tea and I really liked the tea taste of those drinks. They were not too sweet at 75% or 50% sugar. The house made boba has a good texture and the flavor is decent. I still prefer the traditional tapioca pearls somewhere else but this isn't bad. There's ample seating here and a good place to hangout for a bit but is a little out of the way for me to come normally.

This place seems to have taken the place of what used to be Kakigori on Madison since it's next to Uminori, another place I've tried and have yet to do a (5-star) Yelp review on after I make a more recent visit to it. I went on a Monday night around 7:30pm and there was no one inside. The inside is brightly lit and there's a nice green-foliage backdrop with the Hyson logo near the counter. They were out of boba when I came in but I didn't mind that. I would probably try to get the boba since I hear that this place hand-makes them. From one of the server's recommendations, I got the tiramisu milk tea with regular ice, less sugar and no toppings with a jasmine tea base. In this case, I appreciated how he asked me my preferences for each of these. My drink came with some cream and tiramisu powder on top, and this drink was damn good! It definitely works when it isn't too sweet, and it was also pretty flavorful without being too overbearing. The menu also includes fruit tea and coffee in addition to milk tea. My server also highly recommended the ube taro drinks like the ube milk tea, so that's my next move when I come here the next time!

I've been here a few times and tried some of their drinks. Most recently I had their banh mi. First off, I really like this place. When I go over to Seattle on my way to Madison park, I have to stop here. The staff are really nice and dedicated to making great drinks, I like the ambiance and how the store is setup. As for the drinks, not a single one is bad. Whatever you choose, you'll be really happy with it. Most recently I got the mango smoothie and loved it! It wasn't too sweet, it was perfect. When I was there before, they made their boba by hand! They have seasonal drinks that I always want to try. The banh mi was good. I liked the flavors. It could use more filling, but overall it's really delicious. Everyone should try this place. It's local, they make great drinks and food, and you really can't go wrong with anything on their menu.

Jasmine Classic Milk Tea w/ Ube Boba

Cute boba spot near Madison Park. It's another boba spot in the Seattle area but a bit out of the way, which is both good and bad. It's nice to have boba spread out but it does add a detour for most people. There is guest wifi available but you'll have to ask for the password. One restroom is available. Two tablets to order from are located left of the cash register. Jasmine Classic Milk Tea w/ Ube Boba - firstly, super unique to have homemade boba! I couldn't resist the ube boba so will have to try the regular boba sometime later. The texture is evidently homemade and cut, very chewy, and has the faintest ube flavor. I think the normal boba is also homemade so expecting a similar texture. Honestly the ube flavor isn't too apparent. Milk tea was creamy but the tea flavor is also light. At 25% sugar I couldn't taste too much tea but appreciate how the sugar levels are accurate because the sweetness was low. Either the balance is heavy towards milk or the tea is just light.

I was over in Magnolia looking for boba when I saw Hyson pop up, with reviews stating that they make their own boba in house. I decided then and there to visit, not realizing that the drive over would take almost an hour... At any rate, I got there and they had run out of Ube boba, but the bobarista said there would only be a ten minute wait for a new batch. I decided to stay and ordered a second drink as well. Ube Milk Tea (w/ Ube Boba), Cold, Less Ice, House Milk, Regular Sugar ($6.25) - The ube flavor really stands out in this drink. It seems like mashed ube mixed with sugar, then smeared all over the cup and drink. There's a super ube earthiness in every sip. Usually I find 100% sweetness at boba shops to be way too sweet, but in this drink, 100% is fine. The ube boba is quite interesting - definitely made with ube paste, given the rough exterior, which is embedded with small bits of tender ube. The chew is nice, and quite different from their other house made boba. Overall an interesting drink that's worth a try. Drink Rating: 4/5 Boba Rating: 4/5 Oolong Classic Milk Tea, Cold, Less Ice, House Milk, Regular Sugar w/ Boba ($6.25) - The roasted flavor of the oolong rides on top of a heavy creamer based drink. Hyson is a bit too heavy on the creamer for my tastes, resulting in a drink that has a lot of body, but is a bit out of balance with the creamer covering up many of the subtle oolong flavors. The sweetness is pretty well balanced at 50% and you can tell that the boba is homemade. It's not perfectly round; instead, it's almost a bit cylindrical and it has that uniquely pleasant chew that can only be obtained from boba made in house, rather than boba that's dried, shipped in, and cooked. Drink Rating: 3/5 Boba Rating: 4/5 It's always nice to see a place that makes their own boba - there's really not a lot of them around. I recommend Hyson just for that reason alone. Bathrooms: One unisex room

Ube milk tea w/ube boba
Marge L.

I was really hoping their ube milk tea with ube boba would be full of ube flavor but it was a let down. It just has the purple color giving it the name ube. Their milk tea isn't bad but if you're going to call it ube then have it have ube flavor. The aesthetics of the place is nice. They have a backdrop to take pictures/selfies and lots of seating. There's parking in the Safeway garage or just find street parking.

Cinnamon brown sugar milk tea (left) and Ube milk tea with Ube balls (right)

The interior was nice and the crystal lights were a nice touch. The wait for the drinks weren't too long as there weren't many people inside. We got the Cinnamon Brown Sugar milk tea and the Ube milk tea with Ube balls. The cinnamon brown sugar milk tea was not the best. The tapioca wasn't chewy as I thought and the flavor of it was like one of those fall candles which was not enjoyable. I was expecting a cinnamon roll flavor or a biscoff cookie flavor. Would not recommend this drink. I got the Taro milk tea with taro balls as I genuinely did not enjoy the cinnamon drink. The ube milk tea did not have that strong of an ube flavor and the ube balls almost fell apart when you bit into it. Perhaps that's just how it is supposed to be. The taro milk tea was similar to the ube one.

Hot Hyson Milk Tea
Michael John G.

I got a hot Hyson Tea and the owner was super nice to make it in a regular cup instead of a hot cup because you lose some. But been here multiple times and they never dissappoint especially under the new management. I have yet to try the food but it looks so good so I recommend trying that if you can. In my opinion this place feels more authentic with the tea and boba instead of all these newer places.

Jasmine tea creama - meh
My D.

Easily found street parking. The place was empty. I got the jasmine tea creama. It was EXTREMELY WATERED DOWN. Tasted like nothing. The creama was good though, very thick. Would not recommend for $7, not even for $2.

You really can't go wrong with any of the drinks but my all time favorites are the tieguanyin oolong milk tea with toppings and the strawberry milk tea, which I believe they have now rebranded to strawberry smoothie. Sugar is adjustable which is great because I love my drinks less sweet. I got the strawberry smoothie and bff milk tea this time, which I believe is black milk tea with egg pudding and grass jelly, and I added egg pudding. So delicious and creamy, and the smoothie does not give off an artificial fruit taste. One thing that was off-putting to me was the signage indicating their kiosk. The makeshift, handwritten message to turn around and use the kiosk seems passive aggressive and gives off the message that the workers do not want to talk to you. Other than that, we got our drinks pretty fast since it wasn't busy near closing, which was when I went.
