Husky Deli is a place that my kids will always remember much like my parents remember the local soda shop or drug store experience in their youth. I guess this doesn't really qualify as a complaint, but Husky Deli has too many ice cream flavors! How am I supposed to decide?! If it weren't such a pain to get to West Seattle, especially without a car, this would be my new favorite place. Not only do they have fantastic ice cream (with the aforementioned overabundance of choices), they stock all sorts of unusual goodies. Come here for the ice cream; stay for the candies and the gourmet jam and the vinegar with stuff growing in it (in a good way of course). Right now I am eating their 12th Man on dark rye: pastrami; swiss; cabbage; 1000 island. It is delicious, with a spicy cabbage crunch that hits the mark: Seahawks 1st down! Also, I'm enjoying a cup of clam chowder; not the best of all time, but hot and made from scratch as far as I can tell. Had a bite of my wife's roast beast (mode) on a French baguette, and it was also a scorer. Kid had a grilled cheese on white, which they pressed like Sherman in one-on-one coverage, except they used a panini grill. She liked it. Husky Deli is an interesting place. It's got a rich family owned West Seattle history. They make fantastic sandwiches and amazing ice cream. It's almost perfect... The thing is, and I feel bad saying something, but it could really be cleaner. The ceiling is kind of nasty looking, and there is a lot of dust and dirt evident. It's not so much that it needs a remodel, more just a REALLY thorough spring cleaning. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you should definitely get something here, but I'd probably suggest you go elsewhere to eat it :). I suggest the Jack's sandwich or the Coconut ice cream, both are delightful. read more

Oh the ice cream. So creamy. Their sandwiches look good too, but every time I go into the store my eyes wander to the sweet, cold goodness. Try their rocky road -- you won't be disappointed! This place is a reason to come out to West Seattle- whether you like it or not is up to you... The walls are lines with all the fun seasonings, ethnic foods, quality sauces, and candies that I usually travel through the Pike Place Market or Central Foods picking up. In this tiny space they seem to fit everything that I love or want to try. Bring on the Aero Bars! Besides groceries are Husky's deli (the center of the entire store) counter, a wine section, the bulk candy/chocolates section, and ice cream. One this visit I chose to get a 1/2 a Rueben sandwich to follow up the uber fab croissant I had a few doors down at the bakery. You can select your own bread, meat, cheese, and toppings, or you can select from premade "grilled" creations or fresh sandwiches offered in 1/2 or whole sizes. I got my rueben to stay- It took about 5 minutes for the young ladies manning the center to create it. The grill marks were present on the sandwich and the bread was quality sourdough, but a good rueben is not cold sauerkraut with 2 slices of UN-MELTED Swiss and a slice or two of meat- topped with a tomato... where was my thousand island dressing? Mehhhh... My rueben was good for killing my carb sugar high and that was it... Maybe I should just stick to ice cream here? Not sure though because I haven't tried it due to the lackluster sandwich experience making me uneasy about another order of any kind. read more

So, I was on the search for a good sandwich, and Husky Deli popped on my Yelp. I finally made the trek up to West Seattle, and I'm sure glad that I did. I loved the atmosphere. It's a cute store, and I was tempted to buy all the different dips and oils for cooking, but refrained. Instead, I enjoyed a nice lunch! I ordered the Turkey Artichoke, but they were out of their french baguette, so I got it with honey wheat instead. The freshness and the quality of the produce are apparent. Definitely a good sandwich - although I have a feeling that it would have been a great sandwich, had I had the baguette. (The honey wheat got a little soggy). My boyfriend enjoyed his Italiano - the meat was delish - and we were both full by the end of it... BUT, who can say no to ice cream? I definitely had to try theirs. I ordered their coffee oreo (YUMMM) with big chunks of oreo cookie, and the boyfriend ordered the Flake (vanilla ice cream with chocolate bits?). He wasn't a huge fan of his, but I thoroughly enjoyed mine. It helps that the waffle cones were made fresh too! (I love the smell of fresh waffle cones....mhmmm..) One of my favorite Delis in the Seattle area, and I live in Renton too. Wonderful friendly staff (its a family run business so many of the staff are part of the Miller family). Fast and always accurate orders when you call your order in for pick up. Delicious food and fantastic selection of Ice creams, truffles, imported products, and deli made to order items. Prices are very reasonable and inexpensive considering the huge portion sizes on the sandwiches. If I am near West Seattle I would definitely go to Husky Deli. read more

This is a GREAT deli! They have great sandwiches and a huge array of chips and snacks to go along with your sandwich. They also have meats, cheeses and canned goods. I love their candy section, they have an amazing selection of different types of candy you don't see everywhere. The absolute best thing at Husky Deli in my opinion is the Nutella Ice Cream...oh my god its amazing! You must try a scoop whenever your in this part of town, I don't care how cold it is! They have some amazing flavors here to choose from but this one is my favorite. The only little minor complaint I have is they don't always keep many of their things well stocked, also the place looks a little dated and dusty. I have fond childhood memories of eating Husky Deli ice cream on hot summer days. I still come back for ice cream as an adult, because sometimes you just need an ice cream cone at 8 PM in the middle of December. If ice cream is not your thing, there are plenty of other sweets. I settled for the chicken avocado sandwich while the BF had the whole bag lunch with a ruben sandwich. The bag lunch comes with chips, a cookie, and an apple. I also got a single scoop of ice cream -- blackberry cheesecake and butter pecan. I didn't think the sandwiches were that great. My bread was a little stale and crumbly. There was a bunch of meat in it, but not much avocado at all. My bf's ruben was so tiny, very little pastrami. The amount of pastrami was about half of the chicken in my sandwich. They deserve four stars for their ice cream. Omg it was so good. Blackberry cheesecake was the winner -- I loved the jam-like swirls in the ice cream. I will definitely come back for that. read more

My boyfriend is from the East Coast, so the sandwiches in Seattle have been quite the disappointment... until now. After we had ordered our food (ultimate grilled cheese for me, some kind of roast beef sandwich for him), I asked him how his sandwich was... AND HE LIKED IT! HEY MIKEY! Mine was good, although not amazing... but still, anything that involves bread, cheese, tomato, and basil is quality in my book. The people seemed nice enough, even giving us GIANT glasses of water (normally asking for water results in teeny-tiny little cups). We tried some of the chocolate-orange ice cream afterwards, which was pretty decent... and a pretty decently-sized serving, too! The rest of the store itself is just awesome - I could seriously live there. SO many amazing food products... Nutella, olive oil, chips, drinks, ice cream, bread, wine, more stuff than I even had time to look at because we were on a time crunch. Husky Deli is fantastic! Great sandwiches - I love the tuna melt and my husband always gets the chicken pesto. The sandwiches are huge so I get a whole eat one half and then bring the other half to work for lunch. Done deal. Delicious Ice cream - nutella, dollar mint, and coffee oreo are my favorites. Best part - last Sunday after Super Bowl (Way to go Saints) I had a craving for ice cream and I called to see when they closed. They have been closed for 5mins but the owner said to come on down through the back. I had the grilled chicken pesto panini and I am not kidding around when I say it is the most delicious sandwich I have ever tasted in my life. The fresh mozzarella was a dream come true, and the rest of the sandwich was just as fresh as the mozzarella. The flavors were simple, but exquisite. I also had a scoop of cookie dough ice cream on a cone. Again, I am not exaggerating when I say it was the best scoop of ice cream I have ever had. I have been coming here since I was in Middle School many moons ago at Madison. We would walk to Husky and get ice cream and roam the junction causing havoc, ice cream in hand:) Now, that I am all grown up, I like to terrorize the salami section with my cold cut game face on, and baby in my ergo carrier. Best ice cream in Seattle (easily) and some of the best you'll find anywhere (very close second to the Dairy Store at the University of Nebraska, which is the pinnacle. THE PINNACLE. Albeit a faraway pinnacle). Terrific deli and market, too, with some hard-to-find international treats. Husky Deli is such a neighborhood classic that when Ben & Jerry's opened their doors just down the block a few years ago, the locals collectively yawned and continued to go to Husky as they've done for 70+ years. (Ben & Jerry's closed shortly afterward) One final note, which I probably shouldn't share because it reduces my chance of getting the goods myself, but I will. Husky Deli receives leftover brewer's malt from Elliott Bay Brewpub across the street (another AWESOME place) and blends it with ice cream and chocolate chips to make a simply fantastic "Stout Wort" ice cream. They then give the ice cream back to Elliott Bay, where it gets served on their sundaes and whatnot. But here's the killer...Husky often has Stout Wort ice cream left over, which they pack into half-gallon tubs and put into the back of their cooler. Occasionally you can find some if you go there on the right day and dig around, otherwise you have to ask, and if you're lucky you can score some from the secondary stash in the back room. I have eaten and shopped here a few times, and really waver between giving them three or four stars. The food/ice cream/grocery selection deserves 4/5 stars! Unfortunately, the chaotic check out process, the employee customer service, and the time it takes to receive your sandwich deserves a 2.5 rating. I you have time, aren't incredibly starving, and have some interest in strolling through the store I recommend ordering the grilled chicken pesto sandwich with added avocado. This sandwich changed my life! ;) it is really good! As for ice cream flavors, I would recommend the French orange and Oreo coffee flavors. The more I eat out, the more I realize that I actually am learning and growing to understand what "good" food really is. And, Husky Deli is the type of place that feels like many of the old shops back home but doesn't deliver on the quality. Granted, high schoolers are making your sandwiches, so maybe I should blame the establishment for its employees' error in dousing my Italian with way too much balsamic to the point at which I got home and the bun was nothing but a soggy mess. Then again, the owner did hire and train these people, and I presume the owner decides that, unlike a typical "Italian mix", the "Italian" only includes one type of meat here plus some provolone, balsamic and oil and veggies. And, an Italian sandwich should have a little more umph in my opinion. Bottom line: I didn't try the ice cream, so I can't be completely fair given that seems to be all the rave here. And, in all fairness, the sandwich tasted okay... it was just ruined by the balsamic and needed some more Italian seasoning. read more

Really good sandwiches and ice cream! My favorite flavors: coconut (light, delicious, with yummy coconut flakes), french orange, and raspberry swirl. I usually get a single scoop, but they let you split flavors so it's like getting double-baby-scoops! They also do really good sandwiches; fresh and flavorful and plentiful but I can't really wax poetic on those because I'm usually eating their ice cream for lunch instead. I'm not typically a fan of potato salad but I like their version of it. If you're bored of waiting in line for ice cream/deli foods, the rest of the store is fun to wander through. Lots of intriguing goodies I've not seen in other grocery stores, and lots of chocolate! Customer service has always been really kind and patient, even when they are crowded and busy. I came in to get a BALTIC, my go-to sandwich and it always varies but at least they give you a full sandwich's worth of ingredients.
