Do not understand the hate I'm seeing, this place is great. It's so hard to find a decent Chinese place that isn't different meats with the same generic incarnation of a brown sauce slathered over the veggies/meat. Vegetables are fresh and tasty, they had the biggest hunks of water chestnuts I've ever seen, the meat in my kung-pao chicken was seared to perfection, and the fried rice was delicious. Honesty, some of the better Chinese I've eaten in a long, long time. Maybe the best. The steamed dumplings were also fantastic and in a made fresh, not served in those mass-produced, tasteless wraps. And the best part? It's incredibly affordable. Granted I've only been for lunch, but two entrees, two bowls of soup, and a dumpling appetizer was under $20. You really can't go wrong. read more

One of the best Asian restaurants in the area - not to mention a spectacularly affordable lunch menu. Everything on the menu is delicious. Just horrible. Eat and get sick - the food they sell is stale. As someone said, there easily can be worm in the food because of it being stale. they just reheat previously cooked food. There's nothing like waste management that they do because they dump it on us. I have been here before (last year) when the food was between OK and good, now it is between horrible and sh*. Around here it's easily one of the better asian food places. I like their dumplings, all the chinese dishes are nice, not too greasy or mushy. I like the wine selection and service, easy parking. This is my 3rd update review for them in less than 6 months... I think given the nice, clean setting and the pleasant (roomy) interior, the lunch special here is a great deal... Around here, even a sandwich shop will cost you ~$7, yet their lunch special menu runs from $6-$8... I like the #4 Chicken w/ garlic sauce and #5 chicken w/ broccoli.. both comes with soup and rice... (#4 tastes better in my opinion) at the end, tax and tip included comes out to $7+.... All we wanted was to take out a small meal, which we ordered at the register. We waited 40 minutes standing in the restaurant while the hostess kept telling us it was 'almost'ready and filling other orders. It was only after complaining and saying we wanted our money back that the food showed up. My husband's dish was burned. This is our 2nd bad experience in a row. The rice was 2/3's of the dish, and sauce was caked with uncooked chili', totally disgusting and nothing tasted right! My reason for not retuning since my boss treated our office to lunch! Honestly, Yelp is a scam. This restaurant is awesome, and angry people like to complain on here to mess with a perfectly good business. I am gluten free and they are incredibly accommodating, reading the order back to me and double checking that things are gluten free. They have excellent chow fen, lo mein, and sushi is extremely fresh. Never had a problem. SO sad to see the negativity, because it's one of the best Chinese places around this area. read more

Horrible service. Last Friday I called in an order for a sushi special and requested an egg roll not soup. What can I say I don't love soup. Well I get off my job and rush over to pick up my food on the way home so I can put my feet up and eat after a long week. But no, alas upon arrival I'm told that not I actually can't have my egg roll, queue waitress literally taking it out of the bag. I'm told I have to wait for a soup now, nobody told me it would be 20 minutes and that they literally had to make a fresh pot of soup. Wish I had just walked out, salmon always tastes frozen. Hadn't been in awhile and kinda forgot about that frozen taste but as soon as I ate my roll I could taste it. Sorry, pass on this one. Tonight, while waiting for my take out order, I witnessed an angry and immature grown man yell at the server working because he had been waiting 5 extra minutes for his order. The way this customer spoke to the worker infuriated me, but I was extremely impressed with how calm and collected he remained, even as he was insulted and berated by an entitled man. Okay, I am obsessed with Hunan. I've seen a lot of complaints, but I really don't understand where they're coming from. My food is always hot, fresh, and delicious. No doubt this place has undergone changes during the last ten years. The old setup served up strictly simple chinese in healthy portions. Then came the move to try and become a swank sushi joint. Bad move. The sushi was sub par and certainly drove the loyalists away. They went back to a more traditional Chinese menu along with sushi offerings. I have seen some horrible reviews of this place and I just can't understand why. We come here a few times a month and have almost always been very pleased. Their General Tsos is usually crispy and delicious (not soggy and flooded with sauce). Vegetables are undercooked, not mushy. I have always enjoyed their soups and they do have decent beer selection of some imported asian beers which are an interesting alternative to traditional domestic beers. Service is sometimes a bit slow when waiting for a check but that is honestly the only real complaint! Even still, service is usually friendly and very courteous. Their lunch special is very reasonably priced especially for Wilton. They always have it ready in "ten minute" which is great. I think A LOT of the poor reviews come from people who are used to casually spending $400 on a NYC dinner. For someone who just wants a nice reliable chinese food experience I would have to say you would agree that this place is great for that. I have been to all versions of this restaurant and probably the first Hunan was the best of the group. The current one offers good portions at a reasonable price for Wilton. In my two recent visits the service is slow and not attentive. The restaurant was 1/2 full but the main courses took 25 minutes to arrive and we did not order thr sushi. The first time the sushi order was 10 minutes later. It is better than its local competition. The latest visit resulted in a very chewy meal. Namely a rubber band in the entry. Haven't tried the sushi because I always go to Reiki Sushi in Wilton for that but it might be worth checking out. I am an in town resident and a frequent restaurateur that made a very poor decision and went to Hunan café for a week-day dinner with my dear mother. Below is my account of the events that took place on Wednesday night June, 8 2011 Hunan Café is a Thai - Chinese - Japanese infusion restaurant. Very conveniently located in the middle of town, you will be delighted at the loud Mexican music that hits you as you enter the premises. Upon entry you will be greeted by no one and in the event that someone does come out of the kitchen make sure to smile or they will vanish as quickly as they appeared. You may even seat yourself, if you like. The tables are clean, and I enjoyed myself immensely until the waiter arrived. He seemed like a wonderful person but getting an order through was pretty tricky. I used all my might and Pictionary skills and felt proud when we reached a consensus. This was good. Im a pretty easy going guy, so as long as he was sort of close - I would eat whatever he put in front of me. Unless its blue or moving - I don't care too much. My order was tricky but manageable consisting of : 2 sweet shrimp sushi, 2 fatty tuna sushi, 2 salmon sushi, 2 tuna rolls and a California roll. 90 seconds after the waiter left he returns to go over the order. Which is absolutely fine and I actually appreciated the vigilance and care... So I got my Pictionary skills back on and I am using my very best expressions possible to illustrate a salmon. Its harder said than done and in retrospect I don't think I did well in round 2 because the waiter returned for a third time to confirm quantities. So far everything from the minute I walked in was a RED FLAG , but I wanted to be respectful to my mom who previously enjoyed this restaurant and I kept my mouth shut. I was also understanding of the waiter as I thought it may be his first day, I thought to myself...lets cut the guy some slack. So I have a drink in my hand, order in the kitchen, (triple checked) and I again felt good. Finally I see the kitchen door open and I see the waiter walking over to our table with our sushi. I know its our sushi because there is not a single other person in this restaurant. From 4 feet away I noticed a small problem and quickly put on my slow motion sensor and the time froze. As I acutely watched the waiter place our food on the table the horror inside of me squeezed my heart and quickly penetrated my soul. I stopped breathing so that I could allocate my energy only to my eyes just to confirm that what I was looking at was actually fish. My sweet shrimp were light brown with a dark brown crust on the edges. My tuna had a shinny reflective oil slick coat on it, and the salmon stank. Literally stank. I won't even get into the color of the Ikura as I dont know how to describe it. It was a color I have never seen before. I was so revolted and petrified at what I saw...the only words that came out of my mouth were "OUT" as the waiter positioned the plate on the table. I didn't want my mom to even see what this person put in front of her. I just wanted it out of my face, out of my mind and forever out of my town. Its one thing to get a bad steak when you go out, and you brush it off and get another one in a month and all is well; but when someone has the audacity to serve you bad fish (clearly knowing) that the fish is bad (by the rainbow of colors and smells) that's criminal food negligence. In reality someone knew the fish is bad, and served it knowing that whoever consumed it would get very sick. I paid for my meal and left immediately. I paid only because I felt that if I did not pay they would make my poor waiter pay for it - and I don't know if he would even understand what happened. I am trying to be light about this but I do ask you to please look, listen and feel your food before you consume it from this restaurant. And please wash your hands every time you touch anything. In retrospect I should have done exactly what my intellect told me to do - turn around and leave immediately. I failed to act on it and consequently got thoroughly punished with a life time of brown sweet shrimp nightmares. They petrified a dude that would eat virtually anything. Pretty hard to do. - Stay hungry my friends, just not here. read more

The place isn't too fancy but I think it's good for casual lunches and dinners with my friends and family, since it's not too expensive. One of our absolute favorites in Wilton! Extremely attentive servers. People happy to be at work. Great to see a crowd at lunch for their incredible $7 lunch special. The pan asian menu is fantastic. Literally every dish we've tried has been delicious. Their Japanese rolls are great, Thai dishes are wonderful and classic Chinese dishes are fantastic as well. Yubi and Jason are amazing hosts! I know that the fish will always be fresh ( I have gotten sick in other nearby sushi places) and they will listen to what you like and make sure your food is fresh and just what you wanted.
