When you order Chow Mein, one expects Chow Mein noodles, not a side of rice. As the order has to be called in, the person taking the order should advise that they are out of noodles. We ended up with a whole lot of cabbage/lettuce and some chicken with a side of rice. This is not what we ordered or expected. read more

I order from this place every week, but today we came with family for a dine-in experience. We ordered a chicken entrée with extra chicken for my son. The waitress was very sweet and helpful; however, when her boss brought out this order, which was the last to arrive, he looked at it, stopped, placed it on the counter, and removed the chicken from the plate. The waitress noticed him and approached him, likely explaining that we had ordered extra chicken, but he didn't listen and continued on his way. I could see this unfold from my seat. It's not just about the extra food or the additional cost; it is unacceptable and unheard of to remove food from a plate that is ready to be served. We paid extra for the additional meat, but we essentially received a regular order because this staff member decided otherwise. I was shocked and did not enjoy the dinner. As a result of this experience, I am unlikely to dine here again in the future. read more

So traveling home I wanted to eat, something other than Italian. I decided to try this place because it stays open until 10! Ah convenient Didn't know this place was here! It's about 8:30 and there's only two other women in the place. I pick a seat in the corner. It's chilly out so definitely want the wonton soup. Which comes quickly and it's just perfect. The house Cabernet is smooth and just right. Then the chicken with broccoli is just perfect. The sauce is a bit heavy but very tasty. Used to eat here throughout HS (2002-2005) and this place used to have the greatest, and I mean the greatest General Tso's chicken I have ever tasted, and I am from and still live in NYC. Crispy, tasty, chunky white meat. And when I say, Crispy, i mean perfectly crispy. Had a reunion in Wilton with some HS friends around 2017 and it was like I never left. Flash forward to around 2019, and the food change. The crispiness was gone and the chicken looked like typical, crappy, NYC chinese General Tsos. I also told my coworkers to order it and cried when I saw that they changed the recipe. I may go one more time just to see if it was an issue with a mass order or if they truly changed the recipe, but this is not the Hunan Cafe I grew up with. The General Tso's was so good i used to think it was gourmet because it was made so differently than every other place ive gotten GTC from. And i have never had it as good as it was pre-2019. This is one of my favorite spots to eat while I'm in Wilton or if I'm looking to get Chinese food. For dining in the space is pretty nice. There's a small sushi bar that I believe has seating. There's also plenty of tables in the restaurant for plenty of seating. The food is great in house as all of the fried dishes have that satisfying crunch that is sometimes lacking with takeout. Service is sometimes hit or miss. I've had some very friendly waiters but also some that aren't so friendly. Sometimes the service can be slow, but I don't hold it against the restaurant as it happens at a lot of places. read more

This place is hot or cold based on what you order. I would give them a 4 star on the sushi as that is very fresh, very well done and prices are extremely decent. On the other hand the Lomein and their soups are ok, do not have the flavor that I seek and kind of bland for my taste as I do prefer a bit of kick in my food, spice wise. But for folks who do not care for high spice levels, this would work for them. The place itself is pretty large, with ample seating. It is kind of hidden if you driving on river road, but once you go there, there are a few restaurants around it and enough parking available. read more

Its a decent place overall. Nothing super stellar, nothing bad. I don't find the staff very friendly, just all business. Sometimes you have to search for your server. They always seem a bit confused when you order. Language barrier I guess. New noodle bar is good to try. 3 bucks for a tea. Food is pretty much straight up what youd expect in an American Chinese place. All the usual stuff. Sushi is good too. Bento box good deal for lunch. I just cant put my finger on why the place does not wow me. Reiki was better, but is now closed for dining in, so i go here. Right downtown so convenient. read more

I'm not sure that this was quite 4 star food, but I'm a sucker for cheap Chinese lunch specials, so I'll give it that 4th star. I came in one afternoon and was greeted and seated promptly. There were almost too many options to choose from, but I was feeling like something fired, so I got the General Tso's with steamed rice and a wonton soup. The wonton came out quickly and certainly warmed me up. The General Tso's came in a pretty large portion for a lunch special. it was good, a nice crunch and not overly sauced, but I've certainly had better. I want to come back soon and start trying some of their noodles dishes as I think that and the sushi might be more of their focus. I'll be back, but not in a huge hurry to do so. read more

Ordered sesame chicken, broccoli with a garlic sauce, green beans sautéed, chicken with a black bean sauce. Sauce were sugary. Flavors are not right. Broccoli isn't supposed to be sweet. Neither are the green beans supposed to be sweet. Maybe will try in a year and a half. ? Maybe. I lived in NYC for 15 years, and while my palate is maybe a little spoiled, this was pretty much inedible. Quality control needs to be improved. read more

I have been to this place dozens of times over the years but stopped going about a year ago because the food was going down hill. Last week we ordered from here because I was too tired to drive to Norwalk or Westport where we usually order our Chinese food. We got three main dishes: 1) Shrimp with Garlic Sauce-nothing special and not much flavor 2) Sesame Chicken-My son who eats everything ate 1/3 of it-tasteless 3) Chicken with Cashews-again no flavor. We will NOT be ordering from here again. I'll drive 1 or 2 towns over to get food that we actually enjoy. read more

I'm not sure what's going on here. I've been coming to Hunan Cafe on a regular basis for as long I can remember (been in the area for 19 years). Over the past few months the food has gone from exceptional to average, the protien in each dish has become a smaller portion than ever; except for chicken, they will give you plenty of that. The last two visits were very disappointing so we tried a new place last night, where for the same money, the quality was equal but the portions were huge. I will give Hunan another try in a few months. Hopefully they will get their act back together. read more

I honestly don't get the bad reviews. This restaurant is awesome. I've been there many times over the course of several years and never had a bad experience. I've gone by myself and with larger parties both for lunch and dinner. The staff goes out of their way to make sure that you are happy. They offer alot of dishes, and I've always been happy with what I ordered. No one I've gone with has ever complained about their food. In fact, just the opposite. read more

This is one of my favorite places to get Asian food. I love their sushi lunch specials (big fan of the Amazing Roll and Dynamite Roll!) and their lo mein is my favorite in the area. Best Chinese food in the area by far!! It is very authentic - not drenched in sauce like some of the other places around. They also have very good and very fresh sushi. They provide crackers and duck sauce whether you dine in or take out which always makes me very happy. Their chicken and string bean dish is one of my very favorites - pro tip: you can request to have them make it spicy! We have loved every dish we have gotten from Hunan and I recommend it to everyone. The only negative thing about this place is the service. The dining room is empty most of the time but even when it is empty I seem to remember the service being a little slow. They do not offer delivery but if you are in the area this makes for a great easy weeknight meal. read more

Great take out dinner tonight. Everything was well prepared and very hot. We ordered Szechuan Beef, garlic Chicken, steamed rice and crispy spring rolls. All the food was delicious. Entrees had a great variety of vegetables in them like mini corn, snow peas, zucchini, peppers etc. dinner came with crispy noodles and duck sauce. A hidden gem!!!! Entrees were terrific with plenty of options, sushi was fresh, and the service was on point.

If I could leave no stars I would. My daughter ordered a pan fried noodle dish and it literally came with three crispy noodles on the bottom. I called to warn the manager that his kitchen was serving pan fried noodles without actually having any noodles in it and he argued with me that that is the way they do it. They call it pan fried noodle (and they are a noodle house) but pan fried noodles just has almost no noodle just on the bottom and that is on purpose. What a crazy place. read more

To be honest, we decided to have lunch at Hunan Café because of its location, in the center of Wilton--easy and ample parking, within a walking distance to the library. We always read reviews before we go to a restaurant for the first time. Most of the reviews were not so good. Here are our two cents... Hunan Café has a very extensive menu. It could easily be called Pan Asian: Sushi/Sashimi, Thai, Chinese (we found dishes from Sichuan, Hunan, Fujian Provinces but there were so many that we probably missed a few provinces). Our family of four ended up ordering Baozi dumplings, Seafood Delight, Mongolian Beef, Duck Fajitas and Thai Curry Vegetables. All dishes were very delicious, but the curry was simply perfect (choice of vegetables: Chinese eggplant, potatoes, mushrooms). The ambience was pleasant, and our server was delightful. This is very clean and cheap and I like it. Not too far from our Wilton office so I come here about once a week and they have yet to disappoint me with their food. Represent! Just kidding. My family has been coming here since 1997. This place is our gold standard when it comes to Chinese food. It sounds ridiculous that a random tiny town in CT would have such good Chinese food. Has anyone noticed that moo shu and egg rolls have mysteriously disappeared from many Chinese menus?? Well, I did. So to find a spot that has both - as well as other old school favorites AND sushi and fusion dishes - made me pretty happy. Whether I'm swinging through for a quick order of California rolls and fried rice for a "I don't feel like cooking tonight" dinner or carrying home 3 bags of steaming containers for a family feast, Hunan Café is both convenient and consistently delicious. We've only done take-out, so I can't speak for the service or general ambience, but the staff seems on-point for phone orders and pick-up. The prices also seem fair enough considering the quality and central location. When my girls' social graces improve and they stop sticking their damn hands in the water feature by the front door, maybe we'll actually stay and enjoy our meal there! read more

Oh dearest Wilton, while you are wonderful in so many ways, yet your lack of culinary excellence does depress me at times. Nonetheless, I do enjoy a lunch or dinner at Hunan Cafe every now and again. Lunch specials will offer a good amount of sizeable portions and choices that are worth it. Dinner measures on the pricier side, but the variety works well, especially if you have people with varying preferences in your group. Although the sushi menu isn't as extensive as Sushi Coshi down the street, I feel that the taste here is much fresher, which for me is HUGE when eating sushi. I also find the dishes to be less oily (and I reluctantly suppose that means healthier) than most other locations. I find that there is a slight overuse of what I believe are green onions in their cuisine. Still, it's always a good meal. Try the pork buns, if you feel like switching up the apps a little. They consist of the same pork that would be inside a dumpling, but have a more pastry-like doughy consistency on the outside. It was a first for me, and they were quite tasty. read more

Decent atmosphere and not over priced as it could be for this little burg. This spot was a tad better in it's previous incarnation as Pacifica. Before that it was...Hunan Cafe I: Hmmmmmmm. As far as your typical fusion (not the extraordinary kind) it's fair. The dumplings are slightly above average, on par with middle of the road on every block NYC Hunan-type offerings, but some of us had enough of the oopy, greasy stuff when we lived in NY. Stick to the curries on the specials and the Thai influenced items. Some of the sushi rolls are so-so -- you'll get a better bang for your buck and more variety at Sushi Coshi up the street. Best bet is the lunch special but the sushi at lunch is a bit of a rip. read more
