Barbacoa
Rachel S.

I had a lovely meal here. I stopped by for a group dinner with a preset menu. I opted for the barbacoa as my entree with tres leches for dessert. The barbacoa came out piping hot wrapped in a green leaf and it paired so well with the delicious bean dip and other toppings. The meat was seasoned so deliciously and I thoroughly enjoyed making my tacos. It was a large amount of food and I ended up taking some home. The tres leches was lovely as well and I could only eat half as I was very full by then. It was soft and so milky, just the way I like it. Our servers were very prompt, kind, and thoughtful throughout the meal. I've been here once before for happy hour and had a similar experience with the excellent staff. This is such a unique concept, the food is always incredible and the drinks are amazing. I will keep coming back here.

For years I have heard about brunch at Hugo's, but have yet to sample it myself. So for our 2-year anniversary we decided to come out and knock it off our list. We put in a reservation for Sunday afternoon, and the place was hoppin'. The savory brunch buffet was quite to the affair with a really long bar. And they also had a second dessert buffet bar as well. They did an excellent job of replacing things that went fast. There was so much on this buffet that I didn't even get to try everything before I was full. That's a yay for their selection, and it's also a yay that I don't eat as much as I used to.#winning. We also had a cocktail each with brunch, but those weren't that. Good to be honest. She had a mezcal mango drink that just didn't hit well, and I had their special margarita. That was very tasty but not worth the excessive price when there were $10 options available. The service here was impeccable. Our wait staff came through each time we were up to snag our plates, and check on our water, and make sure we were taken care of throughout. They also put out a nice message about our anniversary on the table when we arrived, and provided us a dessert on the house specifically for our occasion as well. It was a very nice touch and goes that extra distance. Overall an excellent experience!

Incredible sunday brunch experience. Everything is delicious. Love the green salsa for chips, enchiladas and tamales. Best flan and tres leches my mexican hubby has ever tasted! Go here and dress cute and take someone you love!

Hi, I love visiting this neighborhood corner piece as much as possible. I like going to the happy hour for the great deals and margaritas. This time I went and got the ceviche, taquitos, and a few tacos. Absolutely delicious with great service. The vibe in the restaurant is beautiful and impressive. Definitely a must in Montrose! Thanks, Bob B.

Booked a reservation for the Sunday brunch to celebrate Valentine's. I was interested to try their Mexican approach to brunch. The buffet had a nice variety of savory options including: mini quesabirria tacos, lamb roast, carnitas, chips and salsa, various vegetables and salad, enchiladas, tamales, ceviche, etc. My favorites were honestly the Brussels sprouts and the scalloped potato which doesn't really make me want to come back. The quesabirria tacos and poblano egg was nice too. My deal is, how do you mess up the Mexican rice?? It was wet and undercooked. If you can't get the rice right, you're cooked in my opinion. A lot of the food was room temp. The area where the food is served is a little cramped. The service was good. They had some live music going which was pleasant. Overall the experience was lackluster and I would not come back for the food. The vibe going on felt super casual, we paid $100 for 2 but it's not giving valet restaurant.

Carnitas

We go to Hugo's quite frequently, and the food is always delicious! It's one of those places you can count on for a consistently great meal. The Malinche margaritas are strong but absolutely delicious, so definitely worth trying! And if you love dessert, the chocolate cake is a must it's so good. Overall, we always enjoy coming here and would definitely recommend Hugo's to anyone looking for great food and drinks in Houston!

Carne Brava - generous portion, delicious flavors

Hugo's concepts (H Town Restaurant Group) consistently outperforms. The vibe on a weekend night at Hugo's is fairly electric, acoustics do make a loud crowd louder. Service is always great and the food is always so flavorful. I've enjoyed the attention from the General Managers who know their wine list well and help with pairings.

Hugo's is a Houston staple that always hits the spot. We made a last-minute reservation for Houston Restaurant Weeks and were glad we did. They offer three HRW menus: seafood-focused, meat-focused, and vegetarian. Our table tried everything except the vegetarian, which is actually the one I went for, along with the optional cocktail pairing. At $33 for three thoughtfully crafted drinks, it is a steal. The Menú Nuestro Estilo was well-balanced and full of flavor. The squash blossom soup and quesadilla were delicate and comforting. The braised oxtail empanadas with cilantro aioli were rich and paired perfectly with the Paloma de Guayaba, which was bright and fruity with just the right tartness. For the main course, the grass-fed Black Angus skirt steak with poblano peppers, onions, arroz a la Mexicana, and refritos was tender and flavorful. Mine came out a little undercooked, but the wait staff was quick and receptive when I sent it back. I skipped the accompanying tortillas this time, but the fresh-made corn tortillas here are always a hit. It paired beautifully with the Un Día con Sandía, a smoky and refreshing mezcal and watermelon cocktail. Dessert was a decadent duo of milk and dark chocolate cake with pistachio and cherry compote, rounded out by the Carajillo Oaxaqueño, a coffee dessert cocktail with a mezcal twist. By the end, I was completely stuffed. The best part of Houston Restaurant Weeks is knowing your night out also supports the Houston Food Bank, and Hugo's makes it easy to enjoy a great meal while giving back. Service was warm and attentive, and the lively atmosphere made it feel like the perfect Houston night out. Hugo's has been delivering memorable meals for years, and Restaurant Weeks is just another reminder why it remains a go-to spot in the city.

Tostadas De Camarones! The best Shrimp ever!

5 stars as usual! My husband and I brought an out of town guest to Hugo's for lunch. He travels the world, and absolutely loved this place! (We knew he would) .... From the first class service, to the beautiful bright dining room Hugo's is so fabulous. Our friend ordered the Carne Brava, my husband had the Lechon, and I had the Tostados De Camarones. And of course the guacamole appetizer was divine. Sadly they started eating theirs before I could get a picture! This place is a must try if you've never been! Simply amazing.

Zack K.

Absolutely delicious food and 5 star service. I had the chapulines and the cabrito. Highly recommend them. Their old fashioned was also very good. The pirámide and tres leches were delicious as well. One thing that I will critique is the portions are not big. Do not expect portions to be like those of most Mexican restaurants.

Still one of the best ayce brunches in town! Live musics starting around 11:30. Place gets packed so make sure to get a resy!

Vegan Enchiladas
Heather R.

I am overall impressed with Hugo's vegan options. The vegan enchiladas, Aguachile de Palmito and chips and guac (be sure to ask for vegan version) were all delicious! My only complain was my server wasn't very nice or attentive the 2nd time I came.

Fish of the day w cauli, guac, and habanero (healthy!)
Ish A.

It's been a very long time since I've written a review. So I'll be starting with my Houston favorites. My late wife and I came here for 15 years at least. I still come, at least once a week and sit at the bar. What sets Hugo's apart is their service. Greeted with a smile and handshake/fist bump every time. They give you a "welcome home" feel, which is exactly what you want when you go out to dinner, esp solo. As for the food and drinks, it's always reliable. When I was younger, we'd opt for the Lechon and Taquitos. Now, I get the fresh fish of the day w/ cauliflower, habanero, and guac. If you are looking to be healthy, this is the place. You can say no oil and get a high protein, high fiber dinner no problem. My favorite spirit (by far) is Mezcal. I've been drinking this far before it became popular. Who made it mainstream? Bobby Flay did way back in the day. Think Mesa Grill at Caesars Palace back in 2012. Come for the consistent food and drinks, return for the service. Hats off all staff members from the bartenders, mgt., hostesses, and even valet. A true Houston staple. I post stories of what I eat on IG. Ish.in.Houston

What are other dining options are available during brunch hours?

I believe it's just the buffet! There's something there for everyone! When I went the had quesadillas, carnitas, eggs, paella, chips, salsas, ceviche, duck, corn pudding beans, rice, grilled veggies and much much more! They also have a massive…

Are they doing Sunday brunch?

Yes, I think until 2pm.

Is there a Happy hour?

Yes, 3-6:30pm

Any outdoor seating?

I do not believe so. I have been there a couple times and do not recall seeing anyone sitting outside, offered to sit outside, and seen any sitting furniture outside.

Have they resumed Sunday Brunch buffet?

YES! Finally!

How much is the Sunday brunch?

They aren't doing it right now bc of COVID :( but their regular menu is AMAZING!!!!!!

Do they still do Sunday brunch buffet?

No they don't

Is there a dress code?

No- there is no jacket required but I would wear something nice since it is a nice restaurant.

How much per person is the brunch buffet?

Think it's $35 per person

Is this a good place to celebrate my 18th birthday?

Yes, I think so. It's spacious and the plates are big enough to share.

Do they not have frozen margaritas? This seems odd for a Mexican place but I didn't see any in any of the pictures nor did I see any mention of them on the limited pics of the cocktail menu that I saw. Does anyone know if they have frozen margaritas?

If you are looking for crappy, sour mix laden, from a box mix, frozen margaritas you should probably go someplace like Ruchis. Hugo's has the most fabulous drink menu, certainly some of the most interesting margaritas I've ever seen and the wines by…

When are mariachis playing?

I think it's Sunday brunch.

What is the best dinner item? Thinking abut coming here for a special occasion. Good choice?

the ribs. the carnitas and the carne brava are good too

Is this place like a buffet Friday night?

No, only time for buffet style dining is Sunday Brunch until 3pm. Make reservations if you're serious ;)

Do they serve ceviche with Sunday brunch? If they do, any different kinds? My wife loves ceviche and we would like to go but they have to have ceviche she says!!!

When I was there a few months ago, they did not have ceviche out as a buffet offering, but they were taking orders, paid for separately. If you are willing to pay separately, you can have the ceviche.

Mind you, it's a Tuesday night at 9pm. Flautas de pollo were bland AF chicken. Poasted, shredded with no salt to save its life. They could drown the flautas in a green salsa but blandness of the flautas can't be covered. Rice? Basic. Beans? Boring. Underseasoned flautas + basic rice + boring beans = mediocre food Add $50-$60 all in, it's overpriced mediocre food. Had the food been well seasoned, there would have been no food complaints. When a restaurant sends out so so food, it's like tying its own shoe laces and tripping over itself. You had 1 job: prepare your own kitchen menu well. They did not understand the assignment. Houston is full of mediocre tex mex; this place joins the list of one and done places. If you look at the plate where the flautas was served on, the plate is chipped in different places. 3 years in business, they should have new plates rotating in to take out the damaged plates from reaching diners. Now what happened next could create the scene for a future TV show: Dining Room Nightmares. These two bar flies arrived and started narrating their reality tv life which includes fights, arguments, and dumb things they are doing. Shameless, loud AF, unapologetic, very much in their FAFO era. The male bartender egging them on as if he were that enthusiastic bestie, that enables bad life choices. In the spirit of "oh no you didn't girl." hahaha What makes it worse is that these two women are bartender friends. The mentality is "the customer is always right" so that if they are loud, obnoxious, crude, it is what the customer chooses to do. Meanwhile, I was just trying to eat flautas and churros with my mom not trying to become an aspiring Netflix documentarian. Dining Room Nightmares remains a concept, without a TV show pilot. Dining out should not require a documentary to document how LOUD, CRUDE, and how LONG they were misbehaving that evening. We should not need video receipts to capture mayhem in the middle of dinner. Apparently, it's a taste issue to not want to hear 30 minutes of dropping f bombs, b&:&;, and all manner of expletive language. I am not expecting Disney standards, but basic common consideration to diners. For fact checking purposes, the facts from this diner remain: - Tap water - Mediocre food. - Overpriced - Mismanagement of bad drinkers Juan, later goes on to says the water is filtered. The comedy writes itself: "The water filters are sooooo old, you cannot tell the water is filtered." hahaha. It shows how restaurant maintenance is cutting corners and skipping basics. Come on now, all it takes is 1-3 sips to know tap water is tap water. No PhD in water needed.

Mexican Sugar breaks that mold completely. This is the most legit, wonderful, bougie, over-the-top Mexican restaurant I have ever been to, and I mean that as the highest compliment possible. This was my second trip to Mexican Sugar. The first was in Grapevine. After this visit to the Montrose location, I have officially decided that when I am in Texas, I will seek these places out. They are that good. First, dress up. I doubt there is an actual dress code, but this is not the place where I am showing up looking like I just finished mowing the yard. Come here to be seen. Come here to show out a little. The place is beautiful and has that kind of vibe. Second, the drinks. Hell yes. Fancy, creative, excellent, and impressive enough for even the person who has seen every ridiculous cocktail presentation imaginable. And then there is the food. My God, the food. The salsa and queso are legit AF. The street corn is heaven in a bowl. Get several orders. I am serious. One is not enough. The carne asada was amazing. This was probably the worst restaurant experience I have had in a while…read more Let me preface this by saying I am a gm in the restaurant industry while my husband has been in management and serving for the last 15 years. This is an industry we strive to make better and create memorable experiences for customers. Tonight was definitely an experience to remember but it was not a positive one. To start my mother in law and sister In law arrived at 730 while my husband, mother and myself arrived at 745. I missed the server (Aisha's) greet which would given me more insight Into her ability to be personable because when we arrived she was anything but. Hardly a smile, but she did make sure to try to upsell which I did appreciate as a manager. It seemed she was more of an order taker than an experience maker which is fine but for a restaurant like candante I would hope you would seek out more than the bare minimum. I wish I could say the service was the only issue but it was not. The story continues. They sat us at table 12 which was the second booth from the back which was fine since we couldn't see the bathrooms but not ideal. Apparently this was the area for the servers to do side work and start closing first. I understand rolling silverware but you don't have to bang it right behind us while I'm trying to take a bite of my fajita taco. As soon as I did take a bite I realized the beans were ice cold and to my dismay my mothers food was cold as well. She asked them to heat it up after waiting for ten minutes to flag our waitress which we never found which was why we flagged a busboy. Not to mention our food was delivered without tortillas, prebussing or plates which we also had to flag a busboy for. The waitress did not come back until about fifteen minutes after we recieved our food and when she did she made sure to ask if we want any more food because the kitchen is closing. We only had our food for fifteen minutes and it felt like she was rushing us to get out. When we told her no she proceeded to come back at 837 and ask again. At this point I couldn't eat. They were stacking chairs to my left while people were sweeping to my right and in front of me I have a waitress that is making us feel like we are not only inconveniencing her but a bother. Mind you she was not rude but In these situations you need to be able to bounce back and gauge your audience. I am disappointed to say the least especially because I never saw a manager nor did they stop by once. It's important to touch all of your tables to ensure they are being served up to standards. We did end up staying until 945 because people were staring at us directly In front of our table. I understand labor and how cuts work but that's the name of the game. Sometimes I have let customers stay hour to an hour and a half after we close. It's not ideal but my needs are not more important than my customers. I really hope you all work on your service standards, table touching, and food standards as well.

4/5 Stars | Delicious food, great vibes, but those PRICES?!…read more As a girlie who LOVES to eat and has no problem spending money on amazing food, Toca Madera definitely had me questioning some of these prices! I appreciate fine dining, beautiful ambiance, and a luxury experience, but WHEW! Maybe it's because I travel to Europe often, where I can practically buy two bottles of wine for the price of one glass here, but some of these prices felt like a reach. Let's start with the $44 truffle mac and cheese. FORTY-FOUR DOLLARS FOR A SIDE?! At that point, the mac and cheese better be the main character, come with its own reservation, and pay a portion of my mortgage. LMAO! I wanted to try it, but respectfully passed. Now, let's talk FOOD because they definitely know what they're doing in that kitchen! Fried Calamari: 10/10. WICKED delicious! I'm extremely picky about calamari, and they absolutely nailed it. Easily one of my favorites! Passion Fruit Fire Shots: 10/10. Of course, we had to try the trending fire shots! Delicious and such a fun addition to the experience. Salmon: My entrée, although I originally wanted the scallops. That changed REAL QUICK when I learned it was $59 for FOUR scallops. FOUR?! My bio literally says I'm a big back at heart. I came to EAT! For that price, I personally couldn't justify the portion. Sea Bass Tacos: My husband loved these! Generously sized with a nice spicy kick, but nothing overwhelming. Cilantro Lime Rice: 10/10. SO GOOD! We both ordered it, but honestly could've shared one side. Brown Butter Cake: 100/10. BABYYYY! This dessert deserves its own spotlight. Absolutely delicious! I'd genuinely return just for this cake. Might even attempt recreating it at home! Now, here's why I'm giving four stars. We were celebrating our nine-year wedding anniversary, and while the service was friendly and attentive, the dining experience felt rushed. It was very much, "Ready to order? Ready for your next course? Ready for dessert?" And I'm over here like, can a girlie enjoy her husband and her wine for a second?! Maybe European dining has spoiled me, but I appreciate taking my time, enjoying conversation, and savoring each course. Especially at this price point, I want to enjoy the experience without feeling like we're on a schedule. Then came the awkward anniversary dessert situation. We ordered the brown butter cake, but they brought out a brownie with ice cream that said "Happy Anniversary." Naturally, we assumed it was for us and started eating it. Our waitress realized the mistake and actually took it away from us MID-BITE! Having worked in the serving industry, I personally would've let the guests finish it, especially since the mistake wasn't ours. It was just awkward and unnecessary. And considering we were still charged for our anniversary dessert, the whole situation felt even stranger. For a restaurant positioned as luxury dining, a small complimentary anniversary dessert or champagne would've been a thoughtful touch. Not something I expect, but those little gestures elevate an experience. Also, this restaurant is DARK. And I mean dark as hell! Beautiful, sexy ambiance, but you might need a flashlight for that menu. I also witnessed drinks being spilled on guests at two different tables, so that was interesting! My final thoughts Food? Absolutely delicious! Ambiance? Beautiful, trendy, and definitely a vibe. Service? Friendly, but the pacing and attention to certain details could improve. Pricing? Definitely on the extreme side for what you're getting. For two people, we spent over $300, just FYI! Would I return? Yes, but preferably with a larger group so we could order different dishes and sides to share and experience more of the menu. I wish I could give Toca Madera 4.5 stars because the food deserves recognition. But between the pricing and a few service moments, I can't quite justify five. At the end of the day, I don't mind paying for luxury dining, but there's a difference between paying for quality and paying for the hype. Come for the food, stay for the vibes, and make sure your wallet has eaten before you arrive! Overall, a lovely anniversary dinner with some seriously delicious food, just a few things I wish had been different!
