In New Orleans, if you go below street level, you are probably either in water or in the sewer. Growing up below sea level messes with your head. Anyway, The Blind Pig is a dark, laid-back Oxford staple and I love it. The food is delicious, the beer is cold and plentiful, and it is a great place to watch a game, grab a meal, or just sit around and talk with friends. It also happens to be the first place I ate when I came to Oxford looking for apartments, so it will always have a fond spot in my heart. It is not fancy, and that is exactly why I like it. Hungry? Come here for lunch or dinner. A few standouts for me are the Cuban, the burger, and the nachos. All damn good. Oxford has plenty of newer, prettier, fancier places, but there is something about The Blind Pig that just works. Cold beer, good food, dark room, stairs going underground for reasons I still do not fully trust. What else do you need?

It's not the 'cleanest' feeling, but it isn't supposed to be. It's an Irish pub, and a pretty damn good one considering this is Jonesboro. I ordered fish and chips, and it was awful. The fries were lukewarm, the coleslaw had an overpowering horseradish taste, and the fish was so greasy I couldn't eat it. I had to pick out the fish with a fork and leave the soggy, grease-soaked breading behind. There was literally a pool of grease on my plate. The saddest part? I was worried since this place is smaller and tucked away that it would be only a hangout spot for a group of older neighborhood guys, and that's how they want to keep it (looking at you, old now-closed cigar store on Mendenhall).
