I found this place through social media and wow, what an amazing authentic hubei restaurant! The inside had very traditional Chinese decorations and seating arrangements. There were many tvs around the restaurant displaying Chinese music videos and news. I came here with my family and friends, one friends who is from Wuhan, so he ordered the food which was amazing! Also, the woman in charge was very inviting and can speak many Chinese dialects - Mandarin, Wuhanwua, and Cantonese! She was so sweet and our toddler loved her. As for the food, all the dishes were phenomenal. My friend ordered the traditional Wuhan dry hot noodles which had a wonderful heavy sesame sauce. The bean skin was unlike anything I've ever had. It had a very nice crispy skin that contrasted well with the sticky rice. The lotus roots were also amazing, I've never had such small lotus roots with a nice tangy vinegar sauce. The twice cooked pork was pretty legit, and spicy! The huge surprise of the night was the beautifully plated pine nut fish which was even carved out too look like a pinecone. The sauce was sweet and the fish was perfectly fried, wonderful ratio of fish to the fried part. The cumin beef bones were very flavor packed with cumin and wonderfully cooked. The pearl meatballs were a hit with my toddler. It was so delectable, soft with a nice crunchy texture from the rice. Lastly, we ordered the fried pumpkin with red bean paste and the mochi was so soft and chewy. The red bean paste wasn't too sweet and it was perfectly crispy on the outside. The literal sweet surprise was the refreshing mung bean soup that the lady served. We were so impressed with the overly generous service and attention to our table with refilling tea and making sure we had bowls and utensils. We can't to come back and try other dishes!
Really friendly owner host/server. Helped us figure out what to order for a very late lunch with two kiddos. Got the bean curd with sticky rice and east lake sour and sweet pine nut fried fish. Kids loved both and it was perfect for our party of 4. Chinese singing shows on the TV and two bathrooms (one for each gender). Will come back to try the hot and sour baby lotus roots.
This was a very good mom-and-pop restaurant! Our order was ready for pick up within 15 minutes. We got the Eggplant Pinenut Sweet and Sour Fish, Szechuan Eggplant, and Wuhan Hot and Dry Noodles. All of these dishes were easily 10/10. The fish was very delicate, remained crispy by the time we were home, and the sauce was not too overwhelming. It paired very well with the fish and satisfied a craving I never knew I had. The dry noodles had a strong nutty aroma. It was not too salty and was so rich in sesame flavor. It wasn't too greasy and they give a generous portion. It was really addicting! Finally, I was quite surprised by the Szechuan Eggplant. It was everything I wanted in this dish- they truly nailed the flavor. The eggplant remained a bright purple color, and it paired well with the woodear mushrooms. The cashier was very friendly and quick. I would definitely recommend this restaurant, and I hope to be back.
Came here with my in-laws who are from Hubei province, and had the best meal of our trip to the Bay Area! The owner of the restaurant greeted us and helped us understand the menu. We ended up ordering a bunch of different traditional Hubei dishes, including re gan mian, doupi, and a delicious soup/stew stuffed with fish and meat cakes. Everything was cooked to perfection and tasted extremely authentic. Would highly recommend!
Literally the best restaurant meal I've had in a long time!! Even the mixed veggie dish I ordered without much expectation I really enjoyed! Soy milk in both sweet and salty versions! Will definitely be back for the hot dry noodles especially. I also got the cumin lamb dish and everything I got I enjoyed! Nothing missed the mark and I'm excited to try more dishes.
Wasn't sure what to expect as I've never had Hubei food before but holy smokes I'm hooked! Prices were reasonable, owners were kind, and food was flavorful! Will be dragging my friends and family here again :-) Here's what we ordered: Seaweed with Spareribs Soup (4.5/5): this instantly comforts my soul. There's generous amounts of seaweed and spareribs, perfect for sharing. Sweet and Sour Fish Fillet (6/5): usually I don't like fish because of bones but this was boneless and addicting. The outside was coated in sweet and sour sauce, but not overly so that the sweet and sour flavors penetrated my nose and taste buds. It had the perfect crunch and the fish was soft. Must-get!! Wuhan Bean Skin (4.25/5): love a sticky rice dish to balance out the protein! Outside is tofu bean skin and inside is stuffed with sticky rice.
Came in for late lunch. Interestingly, they are open continuously all day. Had the following dishes: -W1. Wuhan Hot Noodles: just like mamma used to make (if I was from Wuhan), nice chew to noodles, evenly and thinly coated with sesame paste. This is a must order! -46. Stir-fried bacon with dried tofu: tofu is supposed to be a special restaurant made bean curd. Curd is little tough but nice chew/texture. The bacon add a smokeiness that is balanced with the Large Green Onion (大葱, Dàcōng). This is also a must have. The flavor combo is surprisingly nice, subtle but still has a punch. -Crawfish: little spicy, nicely cooked. Real enjoyable to eat. Nice that they give plastic gloves and a trash bowl to peel the tails off the crawfish. Just wish they were shell-less. -Fish balls & fish cakes & meatballs platter: served as a soup, has some green veggies in there too. This is a good, savory, filling dish that makes you satisfied. Not a lot of flavor, just the main ingredients and that is all needed to make this an enjoyable dish. Service was awesome. Very helpful, polite and sweet. The one owner, a lady, was serving us. Ambiance is nice! Place was clean and well decorated. Had some traditional Chinese items on wall and big wall mural of famous Wuhan places. Bathrooms pretty good too. Overall a very nice visit. We really like Hubei food but too bad it's far from us. We'll make time to stop by again when in the area. Will recommend to friends.
I was born in Wuhan, Hubei, and both my parents were raised there and went to college there. When I found out this restaurant existed, I knew I had to bring my mom here. She was pleasantly surprised, enjoyed the food (we all did!), and became WeChat bff's with the owner. RESERVATIONS Made by phone a few weeks in advance for a group of 6, on a Saturday at 6pm. It probably wasn't necessary; they weren't too busy, but did have a couple other large groups. THE COST $136.31 total including tax tip. Very reasonable for 4 adults and 2 toddlers, plus leftovers. THE SERVICE Very friendly. I'm sure it didnt' hurt that my mom and the owner realized they grew up blocks from each other. She even sent us home with an extra dish for free after she found out it was my mom's birthday! THE FOOD 54. Hunan Style Beef ($21.95) - 4 stars We were very impressed how tender the meat was. This is also legit spicy! H2. Steamed Spareribs ($16.95) - 4 stars Another classic Wuhan dish! My mom makes this all the time but I have never had it at a restaurant, so seeing it on a menu was a little mindblowing to me. This was up to par to my mom's cooking, and that's saying a lot! H7. East Lake Eggplant Pine Nuts Fish ($19.95) - 3.5 stars Nice breading and crunch. H3. Ha Kuo Pan Shoots Fried Chinese Bacon ($18.95) - 3 stars Fine, but just not my favorite dish generally. I don't love the bamboo texture and think there are better uses for bacon! W1. Wuhan Hot Noodles ($21.90) - 3.5 stars A hometown favorite! This was good overall, but a little different from the classic street noodle you can get on any corner in Wuhan. The noodles they use are thicker and softer, the sauce a little thinner.

A very quiet little place. Friendly service from a nice lady who clearly cares about the restaurant and seemed meticulous about detail and the overall cleanliness and appearance of the restaurant. The food was a nice change of pace from other restaurants. The fish was skillfully executed and was delicious. I enjoyed the cumin ribs. read more
Many people have heard of Hunan but we don't hear too much about their northern neighbor Hubei.I am Chinese yet many of the dishes were a new experience for me. East Lake Eggplant Pine Nut Fish - Fish was fried yet tender, glazed with a orange sauce then sprinkled with pine nuts. No eggplant anywhere. The fish was carved to look like a pine cone so I think it is suppose to look like something named eggplant pine cone. Beer Duck - It had a dark sauce over it and looked like beef cubes but I think it was chicken. It was good but different. Steamed Spare Ribs - The owner said she had steamed it for X long hours and really praised over it. I liked it. Spicy Beef Ribs - Not too hot, but lots of spices like cumin and spices you can see. It was OK. Wuhan Bean Curd Skin - Looks like an egg omelette stuffed with rice and meat inside. It was OK. Wuhan Hot Noodles - Thick egg noodles with peanut sauce and chili. It was OK. ShangHai Steamed Pork Bun - XLB was good. Complimentary slightly sweet mung bean soup for dessert. read more

Nostalgia. Most authentic Wuhan food here. I've been living in America for 3 years and did not go back to Wuhan. Tonight Hubei Restaurant makes me feel like I'm back home. Really enjoy the food. One of the best highlights in SF. read more

I ordered the Wuhan cold noodles and boiled spicy fish fillet. Both very delicious and flavorful. The cold noodles is similar to Dan Dan noodles with its peanut taste so be advised if you have a nut allergy. read more

They used to be one of my favs back when I lived in Millbrae. Today I ordered via Weee (a note to the owners, in case you'd like to trace what went wrong) and was very disappointed. Specifically, the Wuhan Bean Skin had almost all glutinous rice in it with very little meat & veggie. Very hard to chew or swallow. Nothing like what I had (many times!) when dining in. read more

The Food A friend wanted to try a variety of food for his birthday, so Hu Bei Restaurant was a desired choice. Needless to say, we ordered quite a bit of dishes to try amongst everyone. I believe they also gave us a complementary noodle on the house, which was awesome. - Cucumber with Garlic Sauce (凉拌黄瓜) - Spicy Dumplings, Sour Oil (紅油抄手) - Spicy Boiled Beef/Lamb (水煮牛/羊肉) - Ping Xiang Fried Pork (平那小炒肉) - Cumin Beef Steak (孜然牛排) - Ma Po Tofu Pork (麻婆豆腐) - A Choy w/ Garlic Sauce (蒜蓉A菜) - Dry Cooked String Beans (干煽四季豆) - Eggplant with Szechuan Sauce (鱼香茄子) - Golden Prawns (黃金金沙蝦) - Fried Rice (炒饭, 虾) All the food was very delicious with good flavors and taste. I enjoyed the noodle dish (Wuhan Hot Noodles, 武漢熱干麵) they gave us. I also liked their Spicy Boiled Beef/Lamb and Cumin Beef Steak. Though I wish these two dishes were a bit more...meaty. My friends and I were quite satisfied after the meal. But there were many more dishes to try, so perhaps we will return another time. The Miscellaneous The restaurant is within a small plaza, but there seems to be a decent amount of parking. The inside is not super big, but there is quite a bit of seating for various group sizes. The interior has interesting decor to bring out the theme of a Chinese restaurant. Their services seemed efficient, the food arrived at time not too long after ordering. Their staff was very kind and sincere, not like your typical asian restaurant, big thumbs up. They have an extensive menu with many varieties of dishes to choose from. The prices are quite reasonable also on their standard dish, with specialty dishes slightly more expensive. I would still come back and visit to try their other selection though. read more
Came here and tried a lot of dishes. My favorite ones were Wuhan noodles, wuhan bean skin, cauliflower, another lotus vegetarian dish. The wuhan noodles definitely aren't as good as the ones I had in Wuhan, but it's a very homey taste. It's thick, and once you start eating you can't really stop eating it. The Wuhan bean skin really surprised me. Loved the soft layer on the outside and the rice in the inside. Very great and subtle taste. If you've had hunan cauliflower, this is the same. Very typical. Could've bit a bit more sour I thought, was just on the spicy side, still good though. The other lotus dish was something I've never had before. It was like a cold appetizer that seems to be refreshing, but had a spicy kick to it. Eat too many, and it's not that refreshing. I also tried the beer duck, lotus root soup, beef sparerib (cumin style). The duck had a very thick sauce and was flavorful, just had too many bones and not enough meat. The lotus root soup was just meh.... The beef sparerib has a lot of breading, so be ready for that. As for the flavor, it was also just alright. read more

Authentic Chinese restaurant features Hu Bei cuisine. Serve a good variety of traditional HuBei dishes like Wu Han noodle, bean skin, lotus root soup... hard to find elsewhere, taste wonderful. Can't wait to come back. read more
Backstory: After biking 100 miles in a day, ya boi was hungry. I saw that this place was going to close in half an hour so I called in asking if I could place an order and arrive to dine in just before closing. I basically just asked the owner for recommendations over the phone and ordered 8 dishes for 3 people. The owner was a bit skeptical that we'd be able to finish, but little did she know... The food was great and seemed authentic, though to be fair this was my first time having Hu Bei food (usually go for Sichuan, Shanghainese or Hunan). What really set this place apart though was the service though, which is super rare for a Chinese place. The owner was very patient in helping me order over the phone, introduced the dishes to us and even gave us a couple freebies(!) when she saw how hongry the bois were. I love this place. The food is so different from the other province so I have eaten Shanghai, Cantonese, and Beijing style. But this was a big surprise! The flavor is slightly sour with heat and savory umami. Very tasty! I'm coming back with my Asian mafia. read more
Saw the grand opening sign and decided to try it for lunch. This place used to be Happy Sichuan. I was in the mood for some spicy food, and got Mongolian lamb, spicy boiled fish, and some string beans. The food is good, but towards the end, everything tasted very salty. I don't think the seasoning was mixed well. The string beans were tasty, and the lamb was super tender. You can taste the flavor of the peppers, but it is a very mild spicy. Similar to the food you get at Wonderful a few blocks away. Bowls of white rice are pricey at $1.50 per bowl. read more

SO GOOD(Recommended): steamed ribs, hot dry noodle (if you like spicy, ask for house special chili sauce), lotus ribs soup, and beer duck. Service: fast and very friendly I also love that they will provide free green bean soup after your meal :) read more

Every weekend, we are in Millbrae and have been sampling a lot of the local digs. My 93 year old father in law loves this place so we got him take out and now we love it also! We ordered take-out as we are in the Age of COVID. The restaurant opens at 5 but we were able to order before that and pick it up a little after 5 which was super convenient. Apparently it is run by a woman from Hubei and I guess there are Wu-han specialities. YES! That Wu-han. Sadly, we read an article that her business was suffering because of the association with the virus. Well, that stinks for people who are not going to her restaurant. The food was excellent! We got so many things that I just took one big picture because honestly, most fried rice, chow mien, and cucumber salads look the same. However, they do not always taste the same. The food was delicious! The cucumber salad was a bit on the spicy side but I mixed it with my fried rice, chow mien, and green beans and it was fine. You can see the red spiciness in the photo. We also got a yummy tofu egg flower type soup and the guys wanted the sweet and sour meat dish. Everything was hot and yummy. I highly recommend that you give this woman the business she deserves and don't worry about Wu-han on the menu. read more

The place seems a bit odd. Owner and workers not good with english and therefore customer service sucks! Tried their Hubei noodles for the first time cannot make out to how it taste. I want to like it but I also dislike it. Unsure if i will be back.. read more

From Wuhan. Missed my hometown food so much. To be honest their food is not that authentic, but it got a touch of it. Their hot dry noodle is better than the Hankow Cuisine, though not as good as the one I had in Houston. Dou Pi was ok, though having a little bit more sauce would make it better. The steamed meatball with sticky rice was very good. It lacked a little bit of flavor to be perfect, but good enough for me to pack some home. The pan fried buns were good, tasted similar to the ones I used to have in Wuhan. The fried sweet potatoes made me miss my home so much! Such a traditional street food omg! The lotus soup with ribs can be cooked longer and slower, but the seasonings were authentic. They provided free green bean soup at the end as dessert, and it was refreshing. read more

Ordered take out. First time having HuBei food in US. I can't tell if it's authentic hubei food since I'm nowhere close to the place. But I do know it's pretty tasty Chinese food and I would recommend to try. I was warmly greeted and got a complimentary dessert from the restaurant owner. She is just very nice. read more
