We used to love coming here for the lobster deal with a few add on Canto dishes. A year ago, things started to not be as good, but we still would visit when we do not want to drive out to Chinatown. However, this time we flat out do not know what happened... The place is still cozy with its blue ambient lightings (+1), and the waitress was professional, friendly and nice (+1). But the food was close to not edible. My parents decided on three dishes - one with eggplants, one is some kind of mixed vegetables, then a pork dish. All three were super salty even when we requested them to be less salt, and they all tasted similar. The pork was not only not fresh, it had gone bad that we had to return it to the kitchen to be replaced with a beef flat noodles dish, which was still not fresh tasting at all. NEVER AGAIN. We will never visit nor order from Hou Wei again due to an employee named Joey. We LOVE the food and the wonderful delivery drivers at Hou Wei, but Joey lost us as longtime repeat customers today. Normally someone else answers the phone who is polite and helpful, but occasionally it is Joey. And we dread when it is Joey. She is short-tempered, extremely difficult to understand, and she does not seem to know the menu. We've been patient in the past when she's answered and we've had to repeat the order multiple times (yet still received the wrong food), but today was the last straw. I hope this otherwise excellent restaurant either invests in some customer service training for Joey or reassigns her to a position more suited to her presumed strengths. read more

Ordered takeout today. I had got take out before and the orange chicken was good. Today the orange chicken was overcooked and tough. I got also the moo goo gai pan, I've never had moo goo gai pan but it was bland. I liked that it had veggies and the chicken wasn't breaded. They asked if it was cash, and I said it was a credit card. They are now charging a 3% fee for credit cards - I wish they had told me before and I would have used my debit card (I don't have cash usually). I give kudos to Hou Wei as it has a decent selection of very classic Mandarin style dishes, along with the tourist-y options. Their list of lunch specials are a nice contrast to the typical fast food burger and taco options. Each special entree comes with your choice of soup (wonton or egg drop) and an egg roll. I opted for the gang-do pai-gwut (the spicy deep fried pork chops) with rice. They came out and they were fairly decent although the chops themselves were slightly smaller. It could had a deeper integrated flavor where the pork is juicier at first bite. It had a great spicy kick. Otherwise it was a good meal, even had enough to take home for a midnight snack. Friend had a stir fry chicken chow mein which is pretty much your standard. Overall if I'm looking for something in North Houston, I would stop by again! read more

We have been going to HouWei since its opening. It was absolutely wonderful! It has changed hands many times. We would periodically check it out in hopes it would return to its original "wonderfulness". My most recent visit left much to be desired. The food was unbelievably bland. I agree with another reviewer of the Asian lady. The Asian lady has no sense of customer service. I was in there a total of 20 min. (Eat in and order to take out). She started clearing my place while I was still eating. I let her know I was still eating. After she left, I asked the other employee if they were closing for the afternoon and reopening for the evening. The answer was "No". So why was I being rushed out the door?! Other than my eat in, I had ordered 3 dishes for takeout. What a mistake! Their description says the food is Mandarin. Based on my Chinese heritage, I don't agree. Update: Yes, I know I just barely cranked out a review but I do need to add that they have a 2 for $20 lobster special going. The stipulations are that you can only eat it dine in, no to go and only allowed 1 order per table. I thought about walking outside, coming back in and sitting at another table, does that count? Service was great and servers were very friendly, attentive, and polite. Said they took over 5 months ago. Everything we ordered was great! Had the Singapore Noodles - great curry flavor. Hadn't eatin since breakfast & got call for random meet up w/ friends. Needed a quick bite & I was right by Hou Wei, so I hit the parking lot! Even though it was just at 45 minutes to shut down, I was greeted with a smile & not given major side eye since I was eating in house & not ordering take out. Special of the day was kung pao chicken & an eggroll for $7.95 so went for that. No left overs from prior cooked batches. The flavor was awesome. The veggies really stood out, perfectly cooked, but enough snap/crunch to them. Not overcooked at all. Plate was on fire, even the rice was piping hot. The food was definitely delicious. I had the seafood fried noodles and I do believe it was my first foray into fried noodles. I like the texture of them when the broth of the seafood soften the noodles but still have a stiffness to them. Also had a chicken egg roll which was great. The general tso my girl got was good even though she felt it was spicy with the jalepenoes in it. One knock was the cashier (no waiter since we didn't dine in) repeatedly mixed up the order as we were placing it. You Wei is a little north of Houston so was a great stop for our family as we drove from Dallas to Houston and didn't want to wait until we got to Bellaire to eat. Judging by the Yelp reviews this placed is known for their lobster special so we ended up having a great meal of 2 lobsters cooked with ginger and onion, a Peking duck and beef with broccoli. The Peking duck was also prepared well and came with the standard bou. Overall, the food came out quickly and service was attentive. We enjoyed our dinner. read more

This restaurant is great for takeout. They are very fast at preparing food to go. I've tried a bunch of their dishes and they're all good. My favorite dish so far is the Mongolian beef. I ordered to-go to pick up on my way home from work. It is incredibly difficult to find good fried flat noodles with beef outside of chinatown but I'm so glad that they offer this among other delicious chinese options at this restaurant. The noodles were tender and well seasoned and the beef was super tender and flavorful. I'm so glad they hav options you'd typically see at Tan Tan. They also have other options like peking duck and pan fried lobster. I also had the spicy salt toasted squid. This is incredibly similar to salt pepper squid you'd find at other asian restaurants. It is super good and if you take it home, it'll benefit in the air fryer for a few minutes just to crisp everything up. The inside of the restaurant is clean and the staff is polite.
