Would have given it 2 stars, but there was a hair in my egg roll. Food is not good, not even for cheap Chinese food. Sweet and sour chicken tasted like a microwaved frozen McDonald's chicken nugget. There was onion skin in my peppered steak, which tasted like it was flavored with soy sauce only. Workers were unfriendly. $1 service fee for ordering online. I will not be going again. read more

On March 1 2025 I place an online order went to pick up my order nice older lady cleaning the silverware by hand up front unsure why. Informed her I had place an order online gave her my order number and she informed me that I didn't have an order wrong place. Took out my phone and let her see my order with the company name on there. She said sorry your order is right here. I was standing in front of my order the whole time. FOOD WASN'T ALL THAT GREAT my daughter ordered the orange chicken which didn't look like orange chicken trust me we will not be back here. This place is old/dated and could use a deep cleaning and a makeover. When I sat down noticed the floor was sticky as I moved my feet. With that said, the food is good, big portions and everything tasted fresh. Been here a few times and never had issue with the food. The few times I have ate here the waitresses are a couple older women with heavy accents but very friendly and they get the orders correct without writing anything down. It's really *good.* Full disclosure, I'm from New Orleans born and raised. So my palate is probably more discerning than most... After months of delay, I placed my order over the phone, and the lady was quite friendly. Yet to find the boneless spare ribs that adorn most Chinese menus back home, as well as Shrimp Fried Rice that sweeps me off my feet (except for one other restaurant), I decided to give Hoi Yin a try. I placed my order about an hour before closing, picking it up from the drive-thru twenty minutes later. I ordered the Shrimp Fried Rice and the BBQ Pork; the spare ribs were bone-in, and I wasn't looking for beef sticks. There were no photos of the BBQ Pork on Yelp, so I took a shot in the dark. The nice aroma filling my truck, I eagerly fled home to give my food a try... To their credit, the portions from Hoi Yin were large, the price was fair ($15 total) and the food tasted pretty good. Okay--I didn't finish my food because it did absolutely nothing for me. Most of the Shrimp Fried Rice I've tasted since moving to the Houston area has been fairly bland. Plus I came up short when it came to the ribs I'm seeking. So for a *local* standard, my meal from Hoi Yin was really good. Wow, these prices are stuck in the 90s!! The lunch specials start at $6.95. Food is really tasty and flavorful and I came away full. I just don't understand these Yelp reviews. I see an elderly Mom & Pop working hard and always concerned about the quality of their food. It's a beautiful thing. You can see that the locals are regulars and receive a warm welcome. It doesn't look like much from the street and the drive through is perilous with tight corners and trash cans. But inside past the basic decor and furnishings lives a gifted cook who makes delicious down home Chinese meals. My personal favorite is the beef with flat rice noodles. Order the beef fried rice spicy no veggies (with no spice) and kung pao three meat delight (no shrimp, extra beef) which is twelve ninty-five just for it to be bland and a plate full of vegetables. The person I was with asked for mandrian spicy chicken and walnut shrimp just for the chicken to not have flavor or spice and guess what the walnut shrimp, you guessed it a tin pan full a vegetables and 5 shrimp, yes we counted, 4 since one fell. We went in as they unlocked the doors for the day to place a to go order. We have not been in the building itself in years. We usually call in and drive through pick up. The floors were dirty, the tables and chairs had crumbs and dried food, cobwebs were hanging from the doors jambs. We were the second order placed. Three orders were delivered to those that came and placed their order after us. Never a comment to let us know ours was coming up, or soon, or just a moment or anything. Good commuication goes a long way. Thirty-five minutes later, over cooked, soggy, gummy, Lo Mein. Under cooked, lumpy Egg Foo Young gravy. Saving grace, great crab rangoon. We have been coming here for years, since they changed over the building from the Pilgrims Cleaners. We think it is important to support small businesses. I freakin love this place! My small family of 3 always orders the sesame chicken, chef specialty plate to go. The sauce in this dish is delicious. We don't even have to use soy sauce, because of the flavor & amount that is in the dish. We eat dinner & still have leftovers for the next night. It comes with a massive amount of chicken & a side of rice with an egg roll. We order an extra egg roll, but no biggie. The prices are reasonable for what they give you. It's insane! All I can say is if you're looking for relatively fast, cheap, low quality Chinese food, then this is the place to be. Average price across the board is about $7/8 per plate. For lunch specials, most meals are less than $7. Portion sizes are generous and the lunch deal comes with a large fried egg roll and your choice of egg drop soup or sweet and sour soup. I've tried general tso and garlic chicken lunch specials. All I can say is they fill the stomach. The soup cannot even be called soup. It is akin to jello. Very generous with the corn starch. It makes a heavy thonk sound when you pick up the spoon and let it ooze over back into the bowl. The actual dishes themselves are so/so. I do prefer the general tso, but of course isn't the best I've had. Then again, this isn't really the kind of place you look to for authentic, quality Chinese food. Service is hit or miss. The waitress is nice but you'll find yourself having to ask for straws when she hands them out to customers at another table. However, she is the only one on the floor and lunchtime can be busy-ish so we'll cut her some slack. Overall, not the best you'll find, but likely the cheapest. read more

So having lunch here has reminded me of a couple of things. I remember being hungover in college and wanting so desperately to have anything to eat the next day. Yes crappy fast food would have sufficed, but hell I thought to myself let's raise the bar a half a scosh......well this restaurant reminded of that. Mediocre food with decent service. It's like those cheap Chinese places around college campuses. Filling food, not anywhere near good quality. I also agree with other reviews on tasteless food. While others cite the wonton being that way, I cite the egg drop soup as being the worst offender. Lumpy tasteless soup. I love salt but I've NEVER put soy sauce in my egg drop soup. Well, I broke that friggin rule while eating here. Service was good. No soda machines either so don't order coke, you'll get a can. As a soda lover, I hate that. My girl got orange chicken which was good and I got chicken lo mein. Cheap filing but honestly, only ok food. The best thing about this place was the egg rolls. Then we specifically asked for brown gravy and we had a discussion about what brown gravy was.
