This place was beginning to slip six months ago and has now taken a serious nosedive. Prices are higher and food is much worse. The chef has clearly changed, and the mussels are now poor quality and overcooked. Flavors are bland. Service continues to be terrible. Very poor value. The bar is adorable so stick to drinks. read more

Here's the good, bad and the ugly- Reservation was at 6:45 on 8/2/14- we were sat on time- took a few minutes for the server to acknowledge us- they were obviously short on servers. We ordered apps- took 25 minutes to get them- shrimp cakes and fried Brussels sprouts- both were good, but the 2 small shrimp cakes were $22- way too expensive! I had the pork chop and it was tough- which is surprising because it was supposedly brined . The carrots were very hard and cold- My better half had salmon and it was bland and lacked flavor- Bill was $88- two apps, two drinks and two main courses- Not sure how this place has 4 stars- we won't come back, not for this price. Server was not super friendly, but she could have been stressed due to lack of help. read more

Very cool historic building and while food was tasty, portions are skimpy. Had a shrimp and crab cocktail and while the bowl of lettuce and fixing was generous, the crab meat was maybe two teaspoons. My companion had the tri tip sandwich which had very little meat. Unfortunately, they operate like a tourist trap. You also order and pay at the counter and carry your own beverages up the stairs to seat yourself on the balcony (or patio). read more

I had to give this restaurant a 5 star rating because of the ambiance, the food, and the amazing server. This is an historic hotel, so you really get the feeling of being in the Gold Country. The menu has something for everyone. We especially loved the roasted brussel sprouts with bacon, parmesan, and a delicious garlic aioli! Also good - the NY steak (well prepared), the BBQ baby back ribs (lean), and the Caesar and Wedge salads. Our waiter, Mariah, made our dinner a perfect experience. She was welcoming, knowledgeable, and basically said "Yes!" to everything we requested. We got our drinks and food quickly, and we were very happy with our experience. I think the restaurant manager must train their staff well on Customer Service. Because Mariah was a star! When we come back, we'll ask for her again. Thank you! read more

Very disappointing. Service was very good, but the food was mediocre at best. Most dishes came with "creamy risotto" as the side. There was nothing creamy or risotto about it. My salmon was crispy and over cooked. Would not go back. read more

My mom and I stopped into Hotel Sutter Restaurant to grab some lunch and a beer. There were not a lot of places open and this was the only one we could find with beer and food! The place is super cute! We sat at the bar and we were quickly greeted by the bartender. They actually have a decent beer selection for such a tiny place! I ordered my usual, a Lagunitas IPA. We decided to split the club sandwich and it was very very good! The bread was toasted just the right amount and it was piled high with fresh tasting ingredients. The fries were good too! Great little place to stop in for lunch! read more

I won't be going back Yukon mash potatoes had no flavor no butter salt or pepper. And my daughter ordered the Mac n cheese Smokey jack as it's stated on the menu and I swear it was Kraft Mac n cheese I've always thought jack cheese is white and the cheese on this was orange Not good. The tri tip was the only thing that was great and the giant pretzel. read more

We got into Sutter Creek a little late and were looking for something good to eat. We tried the italian place across the street first but they closed the kitchen 30 minutes before their posted closing time, so we walked into the Sutter. Even though it was very crowded they seated us in less than 5 minutes. The place is very nice. Even though it's a very old building, the interior is classy but not too fancy that you feel out of place in jeans. Let's just get right to the food though. Even though they offer full dinners, we just wanted burgers, so we offered off the burger menu. I gotta say, this had to be one of the best burgers I've ever eaten. It was gigantic first off, but the flavor was amazing. My wife and daughter were equally as pleased with their orders, though they had to take half of their portion to go because they are some big burgers. Fantastic. We also ordered a bottle of their house branded wine, which I wasn't expecting to be anything amazing, but it was very good. Not sure who makes it for them, but we liked it. Dinner was so good my wife and I came back the next night just for drinks and an appetizer. We ordered one of the naan bread appetizers and it also was fantastic. Whoever is running the kitchen really has it together. So I'm giving this place 5 stars. I don't see how our experience could have been any better. Great place and it will definitely be a regular stop when we come through Sutter Creek. read more

The restaurant/hotel is right in the heart of Sutter Creek's cute downtown. We came for a late lunch so it wasn't crowded at all. The staff is very friendly. Food was good. I appreciated the vegetarian options. I got the vegetarian sandwich (bread, cheese spread, veggies) with sweet potato fries, plus the beet salad. Everything was tasty--no complaints! read more

A mixed review. Calamari was a 9.5. Need a better wine list featuring more local, affordable wines. Server was unfamiliar with her products. Lamb burger over seasoned & salty. Steak ordered medium rare came out medium. Mushrooms on steak were exceptional - would order as a stand alone dish. Bread served warm +++++ Unfortunately the management never offered to make our dishes "right". Probably would result in us not revisiting or recommending due to the inconsistencies. Very sad as we were looking forward to a new great resturant in Sutter Creek. read more

The food was marginal. The quality of the Filet Mignon was poor. A very fatty cut. Not expected in a Filet. The service was slow. For the location, and price, I expected better. A nice town that needs better restaurants. There is a lot of potential, but for now, try elsewhere. read more

If you're a local, I recommend you stay away. They don't really seem too interested in business from us. A party of 8 is big enough that when you call to make a reservation, they have to go ask permission then call you back with an answer. The first time I tried to get in I fid not get permission. Now if you're lucky enough to get a yes, you will get shoved in the back corner. Don't go here if you might be in any sort of a hurry because it's probably going to take at least an hour to get your food after you order. If you love cheese, order the eggplant napoleon because the cheese is all you'll taste. If you want a great burger, don't bother, unless you like all the flavor cooked out of it. The one good thing I can say is that the waitress was terrific. I hope they get paid a lot because the food sure isn't worth the price. read more

Disappointing dinner. Husband and I ordered whiskey burger and regular burger. The food surprisingly came to our table in just 10 minutes. I ordered mine medium and it came back almost uncooked. The inside of the burger was lukewarm and the texture of the meat was that of uncooked beef tartare. Hubby's fries were soggy and not very warm. I informed two of the waitresses of the rare burger so they could tell the cooks. I just want them to pay better attention to the food they are making so no one else ends up with the same unsatisfactory burger. read more

This place is amazing. The atmosphere and food were fantastic and the wait staff went above and beyond the Call of Duty. They were efficient, friendly and helpful. Our waiter out on the balcony was named Scott and he could not have been more attentive, considerate and thoughtful and grave us great suggestions for meals. I've not been to a restaurant and had this much fun and this much good food in a very long time. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. read more

I've read the reviews and heard from friends who experienced so-so, but since we are staying within walking distance and it looks so inviting when we walk by, we still wanted to give Hotel Sutter a fair shot. 1) we went once when the restaurant was closed but the bar was still open. We had wine off an excellent wine menu and ordered a cheese plate that was ridiculously generous. Almost like the kitchen said, "well this is our final cheese plate of the night so just give them everything we have left." I'm not complaining, and it could be that their cheese plates are always made for Greek Gods in mind, but I have no way of knowing. Satisfied customers here! 2) my parents came to town and stayed here overnight. The rooms I learned, are small. My parents loved the old-time feel of it and it reminded me of backpacking thru Europe and renting little rooms in little hotels. Charming! But I will say that in the room was an oversized dresser that was unneeded- who is staying so long that they need to unpack in to a 9-drawer/ 7 foot high dresser? Put some shelves in the closet and replace the huge dresser with a much needed writing desk. 3) we had a full dinner here on a Friday night. It was busy, but our service was prompt and so was our meal. We had Calamari, Butternut Squash salad with Quinoa (deeeeeeeeelish!) and a New York steak- cooked to perfection. Cocktails were ok (blackberry mojito & house margarita) and wine menu continued to represent the finest local & not local options. Satisfied Customers once again! We will continue to eat here until it proves consistently otherwise... read more

We ate here twice while staying at the hotel and had good and not-so-good experiences. They have balcony seating with overhead misters, which we loved (especially on a hot day). During COVID, you order at the bar, and they give you a number and bring your food. Our first night, blackened salmon special was excellent. On our last night, they screwed up and forgot to order our app and salad. We went back downstairs around 7 to order another entree, and no one said a thing about closing time. At 7:30, as we were about to go downstairs to order dessert, the bartender came up with our tab and credit cards. When we tried to order dessert, she said the kitchen was closed. No last call given to anyone on the balcony, and half the tables were full. At 7:30 p.m. on a Sunday. The wine list doesn't have many quality bottles. The bar was out of mint all weekend--and two of their signature drinks have mint. (Not sure why someone couldn't drive to the nearby Safeway and restock.) They could have made a lot more money off of us. read more

Everything ok.....EXCEPT the FYIES..... everywhere.....really bothering me to the point I asked for a fly swatter from the waitress, I think she thought I was kidding.....I wasn't...it was that bad....The other couple eating with us noticed them also.... A little warm inside but with the doors and windows open.....nice affect....but again flies.... I was told they were doing a photo shoot in the back of the Restaurant and they had to turn the ceiling fans off....REALLY ....at the expense of clients eating.....hummmm....I was told the fans kept the flies away.....hummmm again.... Anyway ....Steak sandwich was OK......service not bad.... JUST THOSE PESTY FLIES...... NOTE: Take your own swatter..... Weasel....out and about.... read more

Excellent Food. Good prices. Lovely ambiance. The only negative comment is that the host was extremely rude/flustered when we came to check in and when we left. I got a salad, can't remember which one, but on the healthier side with a side of chicken and it was very tasty. Lots of flavor. The service was good, loved the open door/window to the street. We got seated right away and didn't have to wait long for our food. Prices were a tad high for what it was, but overall a good experience. read more

My fiancé and I decided to take a little drive to Sutter Creek with our daughter today because I'm in love with the little downtown. We decided to eat here (it was basically the only restaurant open). It looked like a really cool place and their food and drinks sounded really good. We wanted to go up to the balcony to eat, and we had to take the elevator since our daughter was in her stroller. WE GOT STUCK IN THE FREAKIN ELEVATOR!!!! Doors wouldn't open, elevator wouldn't move no matter what button we pressed. I was panicking since I'm claustrophobic in such small places. Called the hotel and they finally got us out and shut down the elevator, but all we got was a half-assed "sorry" from the guy who got us out. Like, WTF?!?! Then to add insult to injury, my fiancé and I both got super sick within an hour of finishing our food (we ordered the same thing). I will say...the food tasted good going down, but not so much coming back up. We will never ever return to this place and will be warning everyone we know if they mention that they're headed to SC. 10/10 would not recommend. read more

This review is for the bar: Stopped in here to have a drink after touring the area on a hot day. This place gets 1 star for atmosphere and 1 star for service. That's all I can say for it. They have a cocktail menu featuring well drinks, they served my (just "ok") margarita in a pint glass and failed to ask my husband which Bulleit he would prefer: he would have taken the rye but wasn't given the option. I can't say I'm impressed. read more

Okay, so, lets start with the part that actually really really matters the most---- the food. It was A-OK. Three stars. The price for the food was reasonable (considering it is a tourist area and typically the prices are higher and the quality is a little lower because, well, part of the cost is the ambiance of being in an 'exotic' place.) We also checked out the little bar in the cellar and it was terrific AND a great band of electric honky tonk jump blues kind of thing going on.. very nice! Excellent! Now for the misadventure. I polled our party after this meal and we all want to say "pretty good customer service recovery" but... man, c'mon you guys learn how to do customer service! Customer service is not about excuses or blame or excuses or appearing to 'try really hard'.. it is about serving the customer. If a customer makes a reservation a couple of days early, they are hoping for all the ambiance of a cool restaurant etc... not to be in the back up against a wall at a table that rocks harder than a heavy metal band. When we asked to be moved to a different location we were told 'sorry the empty tables are for folks with reservations.' When I pointed out that we HAD a reservation AND we were there... that seemed to throw them. As for the table, We were told it rocked because the floor was "bad'. Ummm any table on any floor can be leveled and if I'm eating a 25.00 steak.. I think a solid table is a fair request. After several mishaps on the customer service front a woman appeared and offered us a free appetizer. Okay, it was a good effort, not asked for nor expected.. but, okay, that was 'nice'.. unfortunately, our original waiter returned with an entirely new story as to why the table mishap... whoops! Girls, if you are gonna do service.. talk in the kitchen, come up with a plan and do the plan... The Guinness was perfectly performed (on the first glass, the subsequent one was sloppy and sloshed and a disaster... you try soooo hard, but you must get it right!) Lots of competition for 'nice' dinner in the area. We may go back to the cellar for a drink, but the restaurant... I think we need to keep looking. read more

Hotel was quite nice with big modern bathroom that you don't expect from a Gold Rush hotel. The free wi-fi was great and the free breakfast buffet was a great plus as well. Dinner was another story. We expected fine dining based on Michael Bauer's (SF Chronicle) rave review. Either that chef has moved on or was on a day off this past weekend. Our food was exceedingly mediocre and inelegantly presented. My husband's pan seared salmon was largely tasteless and sat in a heavy sauce. The caesar salad to start was sad, served on a plate no bigger than a saucer. Caesar would've been quite insulted to say the least. My seafood pasta was also unremarkable. Lumped into a huge bowl was way too much pasta in a bland cream sauce and not very fresh tasting seafood. The best part of the meal was the warm crusty bread slices served with a basil oil for dipping. Despite the mediocre food, the dining room is quite pleasant with the exposed brick and the indoor/outdoor feel to the street. Lovely space. The cellar is a great hang out space for drinking. Hotel Sutter is on the right track but the kitchen needs tweaking to be sure. read more

Stayed at Hotel Sutter one rainy, December night, after eating dinner there with two other couples. The short ribs were the best I've ever had, tender and moist. This hotel is just what you would expect in Sutter Creek; older, traditional rooms. The bed was NOT a king, but was very comfortable and made it easy to 'sleep in'. The bathroom, though tiny, was very modern, with beautiful tile and shower. (Still don't understand why hotels do not put grab bars in the shower/bath area.) We were given a room overlooking the street. It was a quiet night with few cars going bye, but I would not recommend an outer room on a busy night; it would not make for good sleeping. Only negatives were: parking problem. The hotel lot in the back was already full at 5PM! The clerk at the front desk told us to park on the street (good luck on Main St.!), then directed us to a public lot down a nearby alley, a block away. A block is not far, except when you are carrying luggage. Amenities in bathroom: Skimpy, one little bar of soap and one tiny bottle of lotion for two people is not enough. Room clock: nice touch, but the tick, tock sound kept me awake. Next time, put it in the drawer. It would be nice to have an illuminated clock in the room, so you can see the time in the dark. There is early morning coffee and croissants served in the lobby; nice touch. But we did get two $3 vouchers to the coffee cafe across the street, where we had real coffee served by a grumpy woman. I thought people in small towns were happy, happy! We had a pleasant stay and would go there again. read more

My boyfriend and I were taking advantage of our few days off from our busy work schedules and decided this location. Our room reservations were booked online, but I guess something went wrong. Unfortunately when we arrived there @ 9 PM, there was a little delay in our check-in (no one was there to check us in). However, it was quickly and professionally handled by Stephanie and one other female (never got her name, but is a waitress at the restruant). Ultimately it was Stephanie who immediately made us feel very welcomed. Although it was not her responsibility, she took initiative, ensured we had a room, was knowledgeable about the history of the town and places to visit, and made it so that we had such a nice experience that we ended up staying an extra night. This hotel is great if you have an interest in historic buildings and the creative use of old wood and furniture. I had the pleasure of meeting Dan, one of whom worked on the lumber aspect of the remodeling project and helped this newly remodeled hotel become a unique spark in a small gold town. Learning about the process of the restoration has given me a new respect of preserving the beauty of wood finishing interiors. We had a wonderful time at the bar with Jay, the bartender and the restaurant's (earns 4 stars) food was delicious. All the staff there were very nice, informative, and attentive. The rooms are clean, bathroom is a bit tight, but the stay is comfortable. There are many different shops nearby such as antiques, clothes, wine tasting, cheese shop, cafes, etc. Overall our experience was very relaxing and enjoyable. We definitely will be coming back. read more

I've been eating at the Sutter Hotel restaurant for several years before crossing the street and enjoying a show at the Sutter Creek Theater so I'm not just "passing through." The last time I ate there I had the service was outstanding, the Sobon Old-vine zinfandel was terrific (as usual) and the short-ribs were simply to die for. To treat myself for my birthday on June 19th I decided to revisit Sutter Creek to enjoy some more of their hospitality and those yummy short-ribs. Unfortunately, the service was so-so, the Zin was still great, but the short-ribs were not up to par. They were tasty but dry and the mashed potatoes accompanying them were "old." Disappointing after my first experience. The bread was dry and forgettable as well. The bright spot for me was the hostess made me feel welcomed and special. She gave me a table next to the front window where one dining alone can "people watch' while waiting for dinner to arrive. I'll visit Sutter Creek again but my have to rethink dining at the hotel restaurant. After all, right around the corner is possibly the best pizza parlor in the West. read more

Smack dab in the center of Main Street, the restaurant is one a few dining establishments in Sutter Creek. I peeked into a few of the other options, looked at a few menus, and decided that this one offered the best combination of food and ambiance. I made a reservation (which I was advised to do... because the deceptively empty place can get completely full very quickly). Given the option, we went for the upstairs balcony dining with a great view of the historic town. My dad and I both opted for the cheapest thing on the menu (the Sutter burger) which came with bread and fries. Really really good food here. The burger was ginormous and tasty, seasoned well. The fries were crispy and crunchy without being dry... so good I ate them first. Loved sitting there hanging out, eating quality food, enjoying the view, and staying cool under the balcony misters. Good place to enjoy a meal and the town. read more

Came here for dinner with the bf whilst visiting Jackson for a romantic weekend. I would have given this place 3 1/2 stars but I can't. Our waitress was sweet and attentive and our libations of choice was delicious. I ordered the sprouts to start and the bf had the soup. So far so good. Entrees were eggplant tower - a bit salty and underwhelming and short ribs which we had to send back because it was ice cold in the middle. However, they did prepare a fresh plate versus reheat the mash and veg so that's where the 1/2 star would have gone. A bit pricey for everything at the end of the day, scene began to get loud by the 7 o'clock hour. All in all, worth the visit with room for improvement. read more

Hotel Sutter Restaurant - Cool - New American Near Me - Sutter Creek, California

Just had dinner tonight at The Sutter, the restaurant at Hotel Sutter. It was fantastic! My husband, son and I came at 6:45 on a Saturday and were seated within 15 minutes. We took a table on the balcony upstairs which had a very cool vibe. If you get chilly, just ask for a blanket. The bread and pesto was so yummy we asked for a refill, which I never do. My husband had the meatloaf, I had the ribeye and my son had the salmon. We all sampled from each other's plates. We couldn't decide which dish we liked best, they were all so different but excellent. For dessert, I was excited to order the pot de creme while my son and husband ordered the brownie. When the waitress came back, she apologized and told me they were out of my order so instead she brought me a complimentary tiramisu. Both desserts were excellent. Then we got the check, it was $85.00 without tip. Granted, we only had one drink, but, that is still incredibly reasonable for this quality of food. We were so impressed we started talking to the staff on our way out. My husband was curious about the renovations still going on with the hotel lobby and the restaurant. They offered to give us a tour. I think the new restaurant space and the lobby will be amazing. We live in the Bay Area, but will come back often. Next time, I think we will try the hotel too. read more
