My mom and I were starving after a Preston castle tour, and we were having trouble finding a place nearby to get a burger...bad cell reception meant no looking at yelp reviews to help guide us. We ended up in Sutter Creek, and figured we'd take a chance at the hotel restaurant. We sat on the deck, pretty much had it to ourselves, which was nice. My mom got a regular cheeseburger. I, on the other hand, went deluxe with the grilled cheese sandwich burger...a burger patty snuggled between two grilled cheese sandwiches. Hot damn! I was in heaven. I got the aioli (spelling?) on the side cuz I wasn't sure about it, but once I tasted it, I slapped it on that bun! Delicious! Good service (Cute server). read more

'was expecting a historical building inside as well as out. 'really disappointed to see the interior modernized to the point of losing the whole gold town feel... BUT what made up for it - the brussell sprout appetizer! awesome, crispy and great taste. who would ever think a vegetable could taste SO good. i will be back for more (and a cold blackberry cider) read more

Could not be happier with my Hotel Sutter Experience. Everyone we encountered was sweet and helpful! We asked for a table in the back of the restaurant as it seemed like it would be quieter for the group of us. This was accommodated most graciously. There were no specials that night as the new chef had just introduced a new menu. (macaroni and cheese in a cast iron skillet with orange sauce OMG! we ordered a second to share). The portions were generous and the wait staff was attentive, young, but attentive and wanting to make our visit a great one. What a Success!!! read more

I give the hotel 2 stars, restaurant 4 stars and the staff 5 stars. The staff is awesome! They are incredibly friendly and most likely saved this place a horrible Yelp review. The lady that checked me in was so nice. Recommended places to do in this sleepy town (I visited during the winter which is their off-peak season). I give them 10 stars if Yelp let me. Hotel room - 2 stars it's quite small. It is an old hotel built in the 1800s during the gold rush. So I get that it's small. I know that the hotel has been renovated so that's a plus. But what I can't forgive is that the AC wasn't working properly and the toilet amenities was sparse. Parking - it's in the back. Kinda scary to walk there at night. You might as well park in the street. You can hear the plumbing when someone flushes. Restaurant- 4 stars. Dinner was delicious. The citrus and arugula salad was amazing. I was quite surprised with the salad. The blue cheese crumble gave it a nice tang and the dressing gave it a fruity flavor. We had the house red wine. Very good with our entree - ribeye steak. It was mouth watery. Hats off to the chef. read more

We started at Element for brunch (GO, just go!), then bar-hopped our way through Sutter. When we stopped in to Hotel Sutter's restaurant, we were welcomed to this cozy spot. One girl in our group was craving a lemon drop, so we added that into our "mix!" Wow, were they yum! There is a variety of places to sit in this gem...must go back for a meal next time. read more

The food was delicious and the Mac and Cheese (topped with bacon) appetizer is heavenly! The service was a bit slow, but the environment and the meals made up for it. The food and drinks are pricey, but they are generous on how much they put on your plate and they cooked my Cheese Burger (with garlic fries) perfectly! read more

Wow, this place is a gem. I had the pleasure of feasting here on Thanksgiving and I couldn't have been more delighted. Everything was scrumptious, especially the Crab Bisque and Pumpkin Brulee. But what really makes this place stand out was the wonderful recent renovation of the 150 year old building. It is rare to find a building this old in the U.S., especially on the West Coast. The new owners tore down walls to open the space up, removed crusty drywall to reveal the beautifully ancient 150 year old brick walls behind them, and found the original Hotel sign from the mid-1800s to display in the dining area. The result is a modern feeling, clean establishment that includes just enough hints of its history to keep things interesting. After dinner, we went to the bar in the basement, called the Cellar for drinks and darts, and the renovation there was equally nice. I didn't have a chance to stay at the hotel, but I'm looking forward to a return visit when I most certainly will. read more

I absolutely love Hotel Sutter.... But the new changes they have made are questionable. I get that it is COVID and they are taking precautions but bars are able to open legally now! OPEN THE CELLAR BAR!! That is what I keep hearing the entire community talk about. Hotel Sutter is known for great drinks and atmosphere. So bring back the bar and GREAT DRINKS. The community NEEDS a GOOD local bar. We miss the fun dancing atmosphere. And I know for a fact that I speak for the entire community. Also, I do think that they need a 'waitress' walking around checking on tables... when I go out to eat I want to feel like I am being taken care of. Overall, Hotel Sutter has great food, great atmosphere, and hard working employees. read more

I had the best chicken sandwich minus the bread it was so delicious. Martinis were fabulous. The Carmel cheesecake was over the top bursting with the most wonderful flavor. Musician "Dave and the box" was superb and he even sang a song at my request that was wonderful! Becky and staff were very attentive, the service was nothing but perfect! I look forward to going again! Thank you to Becky and all the staff. Your all great! The food is delicious. read more

My wife and I came to Sutter Creek to stay at the Grey Gables Bed and Breakfast. (see Bed and Breakfast Yelp review of the Inn) Our story starts about 20 +/- years ago when we met at the Old Belotti Inn. We made - among other things - some great memories. So we go back to relive "The Good Old Days" only to find the hotel and restaurant completely remodeled. Big difference. They remodeled and kept the "ole west" flavor in everything. The old bar is still there and stair case going up to the hotel rooms is still there. The food in the restaurant was terrific. I highly recommend anyone to go and order the Bloody Mary and follow up with a nice meal or overnight stay. You will not be disappointed. read more

My husband and I were married in Sutter Creek, and so for our anniversary we came here for lunch, and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. The food was quite tasty, and the presentation was lovely. The new owners have done a nice job maintaining the antique charm of the building while updating the decor to a more modern atmosphere. Nicely done. Their customer service went above and beyond though...I had prepared to be gone from my nursing baby all day, and so I had packed my breast pump, and everything I would need...well...my new pump doesn't have a battery pack, and I had completely forgotten about that, and so when I realized that and asked if they might have a private area where I would be able to pump, they were very understanding, and immediately met my need. Thank you for the excellent customer service! read more

As a local to Sutter Creek I am so happy to see this restaurant which is such a great part of our community and down town thrive during COVID-19. During the pandemic alone I have eaten at Hotel Sutter plenty of times. I personally love the chicken fettuccine and the chicken Caesar Salad and can't forget the lava fudge cake for dessert.. it is to die for! They have re-done areas of the restaurant to accommodate state mandates like turning the back parking lot area into a safe area to eat socially distanced and they even do live music on the weekends! They also have tents with heaters for when it is cold. One of the best parts of Hotel Sutter is the balcony. You can still go up and enjoy your meal and drinks on the top balcony that over looks beautiful down town Sutter Creek. All of the staff members are so friendly.. bartender Taylor is super sweet and always makes my day when I see her and Becky the manager is super sweet and always so helpful! Overall Hotel Sutter is such a staple place for not just me and my family but the whole town and if you are in Sutter Creek you should stop by! read more

I've eaten here many times under the old Executive Chef and the new one (since Easter 2015). I enjoy the food and service here. This time I had the lamb shank - falling off the bone. so large that i took half of it home in a "people bag" and they used a plastic container not styrofoam or cardboard. - very classy. My two friends had the lamb shank and the crab/shrimp Louie. both enjoyed their meals as well. We shared a dessert- the lemon pound cake with raspberry sauce- wonderful :) read more

I had another successful Workshop & Luncheon for the Amador Senior Visitor Volunteers yesterday at Hotel Sutter. The banquet room is warm and inviting, the food served at lunch was delicious and the service by Elizabeth was outstanding. We left stuffed with knowledge and good food! I wouldn't have these events anywhere else. Thanks to Taylor & Rebecca! Personally, I have had many great meals here for lunch and dinner. The staff is excellent and the food is really terrific. My friends from San Diego recently visited the area and we all had a really great lunch on one of the days they were touring around. read more

I've eaten at Sutter hotel several times. Honestly, it's a hit and miss. Their lunch options are basically salads, burgers and sandwiches. I have several food allergies and their lunch menu just does not provide enough food choices. The acoustics are horrible. I was recently there for lunch on my birthday. although my husband and I were the only ones in the dining room area. We could hardly hear each other because there was a large group in the bar across the hallway. We chose to get up and go somewhere else more enjoyable. However, they're dinner menu is spot on. They provide enough traditional dishes and trendy dishes. Their dinners have always been impeccable. read more

Took my daughter for some shopping and lunch over Memorial break. We loved it! We're so glad that the new owner's have take the time to create a good menu and re-train the staff. Service and staff attitude can really make or break an experience. The renovation is great. We ate by the open doors, fresca style. My daughter had the bowl of braised beef. They should find a better name for the incredibly tender and flavorful bowl of beef. I went for the pulled pork slider (get two if you're hungry). It was much better Pulled Pork then the self described BBQ place in Martell and prices were very nice- Will be back for dinner soon! read more

A gem of a restaurant in a small town. After a nice day in Amador County, my friends and I decided to stop here for dinner and a drink. We were not disappointed. The entrees we ordered were extremely tasty, but the side dish we each had with them - the truffle mashed potatoes - blew us all away. Talk about delicious! The wine selection here is okay and the beer selection follows suit. Prices are reasonable. The waitstaff isn't the quickest nor most attentive, but we didn't have any problems aside from having to wait a little longer than we would have liked to receive our food and, at the end, our bill. read more

Pitiful. We were among a cluster of tables that all seemed to be having an impossible time with our food and service. I was told by another diner that they heard the chef and bartender had both recently quit. Based on the service friday night, I'd say the manager quit too. I could not list one item that we ordered that came out as it should have, but the prices certainly reflected a higher quality. Like $18 for a plain cheeseburger, or $20 for alfredo pasta... When we were able to point out a few of the issues to our server he did not seem to be the least bit interested. Any business worth its salt would not have let this happen on the scale that it did. There were no less than three tables in our area that were sending items back and waiting endlessly for others. A few of us even bonded over the terrible experiences as we were sitting within earshot enough to recognize their troubles. Had a manager, or even a server bothered to address the systematic problems plaguing the restaurant that evening by apologizing to the diners, offering a free appetizer, something, anything other than ignoring everyone, I may be have been empathetic. There may or may not be the obligatory manager's response to a few of these posts, but dont be fooled, this place should be avoided. They were incapable of doing better all evening, I will not be lured back by the promise of getting it better next time. Its a shame because this place had so much potential. Try one of the new spots that have emerged on Main st., I definitely wish I had. read more

Pretty good! Came into the area for a weekday wedding anniversary and, unfortunately, chose a day when most businesses are closed. In other words, we had few dining choices and stumbled into this one. It was good. Hubby had the Prime Rib Dip and I had the Salmon BLT. It does irk me when I ask for something like ranch to go with my fries and they forget. They forgot. Also my fries came cold so I had to send them back but the replacements were excellent. Both entrees were very tasty. The location of the restaurant was nice. Seemed quite clean. It wasn't "must go back, it was amazing" but it was good enough and we had a lovely meal. read more

Worst experience i have had at a restaurant . Hostess was very rude and had us wait for an hour before seated. I cant believe her behavior. Their was a table that was very very loud and i asked the waitress and the hostess to ask them to go over to quiet the table down and both refused to do so. Other patrons were also disturbed by how loud that table was . The food was horible ... Worst Spaghetti and meatballs i ever eat. Stay away from this place. As a form of punishment ,, the workers should be forced to eat that horrible food they serve. read more

I really like this restaurant! I came here on a Saturday night with my boyfriend when we were spending the weekend in Sutter Creek. The food was pretty good, maybe a little basic for the price, but I really liked the ambiance and our server was a real catch. We had great cocktails and were seated at a table right near a big open window at the front so it felt like we were eating outside but without all the foot traffic. There were tons of people there, so I can tell it is a local favorite. Would come again! read more

We are so disappointed in the food we received at your Restaurant. We dropped in between 2 and 3 and it seems we were given food that was prepared hours before. Ordered the brussel sprouts, what was served was not what another diner posted a picture of. It appeared to be what was left at the bottom of the pan, small little pcs of the leaves with maybe couple of 1/4 brussel sprouts. To top it off the dish was cold. It's bad when my Brussel Sprouts at home are 10 times better. I ordered a pasta dish, too sweet, my husbands sandwich was very average. I tried his fries and they were the only tasty item we had. Our Server was good, but I think she should have noticed that the Brussel Sprouts were not what you usually serve. Our mistake is not saying anything about the food when we were there. Will not be back. read more

Lunch today. Restaurant was slow and so was service. Food arrived asked for mustard for burger and after asking twice when it finally arrived food was cold. Very disappointed. Just adding my two cents to recent bad reviews, which I should have read before going to Hotel Sutter. Reviews are not isolated incidences. Won't be back. read more

Very nice cozy place for a drink. Their food especially their hamburgers are gigantic and it looks great.

Visited the restaurant, wish we could have stayed at the hotel a night. Great food and service. They stayed on top of the drinks were very attentive which isn't a usual when it comes to young looking adults. I believe the manager was on duty and he made us feel one of a kind, wish i knew his name. Definitely will go here again. The only reason i didn't give it 5 stars is because i was in aww of the tables near the opening window to the street but we were seated in the way back, not a problem but would have been a plus. very modern and chic look. read more

Took my husband here because previously had been here with friends and loved it. But on this particular day the service was bad the food took forever the waitress was not friendly and the lettuce on my burger was wilted. Asked for new lettuce and the waitress was irritated that I asked, it was empty and took her for ever just to get to our table. I don't plan on going back. To bad because I did like this place. read more

The menu advertises an impossible burger, but what we got was a beyond meat burger. When we questioned the waiter, he marched to the back to prove us wrong. Unfortunately, he returned to the table with the chef who apologized for the error. It was a good burger, but I wouldn't have opted for the extra calories had I known. And there was no offer to make up for the error, just an "oopppsss, sorry about that!" read more

This was a nice place. Good ambiance. The bread they served warm was delicious. It had rosemary in it. We had spinach artichoke fondue. Very good. The Cesar salad was good and large enough to feed both of us. The entrees is where things fell apart. I ordered half a rack of lamb. I got maybe three bites of lamb. The risotto wasn't good at all. I didn't eat it. The vegetables did not have a pleasing flavor I didn't eat those as well. My husband had rib eye with Demi glaze and baked potato. Can't go wrong with baked potato. He did not care for the vegetables either. The staff were very nice and accommodating. It took a very long time to get our entrees. All in all for the price I wouldn't recommend this place. read more

Despite some of the negative reviews we decided to give this restaurant a shot. We made reservations for 7:30 on a Friday evening. We were greeted promptly by a friendly hostess and seated with menus and a drink/wine menu. Water arrived right away. We were asked if we would like bread and balsamic vinaigrette and it was delivered right away as well. The bread was warm and looked like banana bread ;-) but had a strong herb flavor and learned Italian seasoning is one of the ingredients. We had started with drinks and salads. The salad was greens, halved cherry tomatoes, shredded carrots, a little onion and the dressing of our choice. Hubby ordered the lamb lollipops while I had the blackened shrimp. I substituted rice for the smashed potatoes. When our dinner came to the table hubby had rice also, which was not what he ordered but it was ok and we didn't say anything to the waiter. The blackened shrimp was blackened, more like grilled, and the lemon tequila sauce was quite sweet, a little too sweet for me but I just avoided the sauce. We also had dessert, hubby had the creme brullee which he said was very tasty, I had the brownie a la mode without the mode/ice cream. Also very tasty and a rather large portion. All in all we enjoyed our dinner. The food was good although not stellar. Service was good, friendly, and as attentive as we wanted. Some might feel the service is slow but we were not rushed as we feel at other restaurants. Our dinner did not arrive before we were finished with our salad (thank you), our water glasses were kept filled, our drinks were replaced as requested. It was a leisurely, enjoyable dinner. Our entire evening was just under 2 hours, door to door. If you are in a hurry, go somewhere else. We then went to the Cellar, the bar downstairs. There was music but it wasn't live as I had expected. The crowd was much younger than we are, we felt like everyone's grandparents and felt like chaperones so we decided not to stay (no one made us feel that way, we just did). I would eat here again and would recommend it to friends who are looking for a leisurely enjoyable dinner. read more

I regretfully make this review. But, tonight was disappointing. We usually enjoy this place. However the service was less than adequate. Carl was either too busy to attend to us and or his attention was somewhere else. When someone orders some of the most expensive items on the menu, you should pay close attention to them, just sayin. Unfortunately Carl wasn't attentive at all. Without an appolgy he forgot a wine order and didnt even notice after he brought someone else at our table a glass of wine. Carl needed to be yelled for because he would never look in our direction when passing by our table. After a 20 min wait for soggy crab cakes, we recieved the entrees very shortly after that. We were still trying to enjoy the appetizer. The temperatures of the steaks went to the wrong people as well as the rest of the sides being Luke warm and cold. We would have asked for him to fix it but he didnt return to the table till way too late when others were finishing up. Even though it was my sisters birthday we definitely didnt want to stay for dessert. I understand being busy, I've been there. But when you screw up. Instead of not owning up to it, you should apologize and get your head server or management involved to make sure your guests have a good experience. That's what they are there for. I hope this is a learning experience for Carl. We would like to return and have great sevice. Thanks for reading. read more

We stopped in here while enjoying a day of shopping and strolling in the great little town of Sutter Creek. The building is super cute with exposed brick walls and a nice little bar area. There were lots of locals so I can tell this is a Cheers type place. The menu is pretty straightforward and simple. Nothing super unique. We decided to go with Calamari and Ceaser Salad with not a whole lot of expectation. That was a good idea because it was awful. The Ceaser didn't even have croutons. I'm giving 3 stars because the lady bartender was very sweet and made a great raspberry lemon drop. Also because they seem to be going through management and kitchen changes. I hope that they can pick up the slack. As for my next lunch in Sutter Creek I will be going across the street. read more

Allison is a rockstar! My bestie brought me to Sutter Creek for an overnight birthday retreat. We ate lunch here then came back for drinks and appetizers later that night. This was our first and last visit to Hotel Sutter. The wait staff was ridiculously slow, inattentive, young, and quite honestly, seemed untrained. The food was mediocre at best, with stale bread for our artichoke dip. The whole establishment seemed to be unorganized and chaotic. We were not the only dissatisfied customers, as we could hear the couples behind us complaining about their drinks and lack of service. It's a shame, such a beautiful building, yet terrible service overall. Unfortunately, we will not return. read more

Excellent food, great service in a gold rush era hotel. They have a sophisticated selection and a full bar. I've been for lunch and dinner.

Our lunch experience here was an interesting one at best.... We arrived and were seated, but sat without any contact from a server for 20-30 minutes before our drink order was taken. During that time, a server filled several water glasses at the adjoining (and unoccupied) table before our drink order was taken. Several minutes later, 1/2 of the drinks showed up. The other drinks of our party of 4 arrived 15 minutes after that which was about when the first round of iced teas were already empty and needing refilling. It took about an hour for the food to show up. That's when we realized we needed silverware and napkins --- more waiting.... The burgers were okay -- both were ordered medium and one was served beyond well-done. The shrimp and crab Louie was good-tasting, but any pleasure was diminished when a 1/2 of a plastic bread bag clip was found buried in the lettuce. The manager showed up right at that time to inquire about our meal when it was found. He left to replace the salad so I was unable to tell him how disappointing the meal has been . This restaurant is seriously dysfunctional. The two tables which adjoined up were also complaining about the extended wait for everything. They were obviously understaffed, although most normal restaurants could easily handle the couple dozen tables efficiently. I am surprised the manager was present and was blind to the substandard operations of the business. read more
