Terrible service, messed up my check in date, guys at the front promised to change rooms but then the next day 'we have no reason to'. upon checking out the girl at the front desk was extemely rude, barking orders to drop off my room key eventhough i did an extra step and brought it to the front desk. The room number was on the key holder and she said 'no sir you have to tell me the room number' knowing well that its on the room key slip and then said throw it away after trying to start an argument. Rooms have very little lighting. Dont go here. read more

Went to the Cafe Integral inside the Generator. We had the pleasure of working with Chelsea. She was very attentive and the food and coffee were perfect. Thank you Chelsea. read more

I stayed in a 4 person dorm. I've stayed in hostels before so my expectations weren't crazy high, but I did have one bare minimum expectation- clean sheets. So imagine my surprise when I get into my bunk and notice a strange grittiness in my sheets. I turned on the light and what did I see? A ton of DIRT. It was like someone had worked at a construction site and then jumped in my bed without taking their boots off. Absolutely disgusting. I asked to be transferred to a clean bed and was told by the night man that he "wouldn't upgrade me". Instead I was given a pair of clean sheets and told to "throw them on top". I had gotten in late, otherwise I would have just left at that point but it was too late in the night to find another hotel. If you're foolish to stay at this roach motel make sure you check your sheets extremely closely before getting in. read more

I've stayed at Generator several times and it's always very comfortable, affordable, lively. Staff, with Tina the Great at the helm, is friendly, accommodating, responsive and professional. If rooms are ready before the allotted time to check in, they will let you check in early for no extra charge. Location, near Dupont Circle, is convenient to public transportation and walking. Highly recommended. read more

if I could go lower I would. didn't even make it to the room and have been having an uncomfortable experience. staff have been off putting and not helpful. I arrived earlier than my check in, I asked if that was okay and they told me I can check in early for a fee if a room is available. the woman at the desk told me they can't check in before 12 at all. ok so I find an area to sit NOT SLEEP and the a lady harassed me by constantly walking by and looking in and telling me I can't sleep even though I was sitting upright looking at my phone. hours later she came back and told me I need to move so a woman can work in there but no woman came and there are two work area rooms. not sure why I was told to move. I would love to cancel this but it's non refundable so that's great!! I took videos just in case read more

I loved Chelsea! Great customer service and a delicious mocha!! Would come back & the patio was very nice.

Lesbia was Amazing! She did a great job cleaning our room and she was super helpful. The Generator is very clean. My roommates were respectful. I will definitely come back read more

I stayed here a few times and have had pleasant experiences. It has amenities such as a gym, pool, and an open workspace in the lobby. Tina has been very helpful when I've stayed there, especially early check in. The location is very located close to downtown area with great restaurants at night, and there is a historic area just a few blocks away--worth visiting! read more

Really great environment and a helpful staff in the morning. S/O to Chelsea and Amanda!

You see a posting for a single king room. You click on the posting for a single king room. You book and pay for the single king room. Your confirmation shows a single king room. You arrive expecting a single king room. But no! They refuse to give you the single king room unless you pay $100s more and they refuse to refund what you've already paid. They will only allow you stay in a quad shared bunk bed room. - Beware. This place is a scam. TOTAL SCAM. read more

Lesbia does great work in keeping the space clean and tidy. Shes very kind and accommodating too. Thanks!

great place to work, and still snag breakfast and coffee. Chelsea was so helpful and accommodating!!

First, this is a quaint little hotel, with staff that is pretty friendly. They did have a bar/restaurant but we were unable to use it as they were closed for most of the 3 days/2nights that we visited. They do have nice lounge areas for guests to use as well. The major problem I had was that they were pretty pricey to be so basic.... We had a few basic channels (and dead batteries), very low water pressure to shower in, no wash rags..... and upon realizing we were missing a toothbrush came across their list of charges for basic necessities..... They also charge, $47 per day for parking, which we had no choice but to pay. They have since kept our deposit stating that they used it to pay our parking fees...... I have since called and had to send my receipts as proof that they charged us everything separately and hopefully they will refund the money as soon as possible. Its all a little too greedily suspicious and I would never recommend that anyone pay upwards of $700 to spend 2 nights at this hotel! read more

Probably not the fanciest hotel I have stayed in. Great room for a good price. Younger atmosphere with interesting decorations. Helpful staff. I would stay there again. read more

I needed to cancel a reservation due to covid. It took over 90 minutes of calling to get someone on the phone who could help me during business hours on a week day. When I reached a manager I was told this was typical and managers are often unavailable. I eventually reached a manager who agreed i would be charged for one night but refunded for the remainder of my stay, which wasn't ideal, but something I could live with. They then charged for the entire stay. When questioned about this, they never disputed that their front desk manager agreed to the refund, just claimed that the employee who agreed wasn't authorized to do so. Just abysmal service bordering on theft. And just very reckless behavior for a hotel with shared hostel style rooms to make cancellation incredibly difficult for guests who test covid+ read more

Hotel has gone down over the years and is overpriced. Also staff is very rude and made me not wanna stay at this hotel again, especially the front desk lady during the day on 4/13/24. I get not wanting to be at work, but be kind to guests at least. read more

I actually recommended this place to my parents. It's a pretty illogically put together place. They have a great looking bar that is never opened...ever. The rooftop balcony and pool closes at 9pm? There is no chest of drawers in smaller rooms with only a bed. What they have going for them here is their coffee (cafe integral) and their lobby's is nice with breakout rooms for some personal time. The place is just not user friendly at all unfortunately so I will not recommend this place again. read more

I extended my stay for a day due to illness and actually called them from the ER. I asked if they could set aside a bottom bunk for me. She said no, they go first come first serve and pick my bed then. So, I asked her if I was traveling with my wheelchair bound friend who, by definition has significantly less mobility I do, she still wouldn't save the bottom bed, she insisted I just hold on. I told her it doesn't matter, the whole disabled world will know what she told me. Monday I just might contact the DC department thaT handles ADA issues and file a complaint. read more

I give this hostel no stars, the service is terrible. No ice machines, broken vending machines, and musty smelling rooms. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!! read more

We stayed here for our last trip to DC. I was looking for something on a budget, and we most certainly found it here. The price is better than any airbnb I could find, once the airbnb'ers added their service and cleaning fees... This is a clean place, with friendly service. I used the gym every morning. It was a small room; we had two twin beds, but it worked out. If you are looking to save some money, this is a great alternative to the higher priced hotels around DC. My son joked about the vending machines "I'm going to the concierge", LOL! read more

The staff at this hotel are rude and disrespectful. We had a horrible experience with the staff at the restaurant/bar and the front desk. They were argumentative, didn't listen to us and were dismissive. We do not recommend this hotel which is quite unfortunate because it has so much potential. The customer service was deplorable and we will never be back AVOID this place!! If I could give it zero stars, I would. read more

I didn't have to switch rooms and pay more money after all. I guess I'll blame it on miscommunication

Quite good. I wasn't expecting much, and have been very pleasantly surprised. The location is fantastic, on Connecticut Avenue just north of Dupont Circle, most of the way up the hill to Adams-Morgan. Smartly furnished throughout, with a first floor/reception that is comfortable for working on a laptop. I have a single room, which is quite small but easy on the eye and comfortable, furnished with everything I need, including a mini fridge. Value, especially for the location, is unbeatable. There's a rooftop lounge, a bar/cafe (currently closed for Covidtime), a swimming pool and a gym. Solid five stars from me. read more

This hotel has the potential to be great place to stay however the experience was not ideal. The biggest factor that put down the rating was the wifi. We only stayed 5 days. In the first 2 days, we could connect to the internet and it would move slow but it was doable. The last three days, the wifi would not connect to the internet. I had to take off the wifi so I could possibly use my data. But even with my LTE data, the connection was terribly slow. Secondly, it constantly smelled like urine. We've deduced that it was a pet but while I didn't notice it the first day, the last four days had the room constantly lingering with urine. I would suggest that if families are allowed to have pets, that they are to be separated from other rooms that did not bring pets. The sides of the walls smelled horribly of urine. Third, although there were many sockets in the room, too many of them did not charge. My friend and I both had Apple chargers and while it said it was charging, it took 20 minutes and nothing was charged. My friends phone was left overnight to charge and her phone was still on 10%. However when we tried to find other sockets, they would charge appropriately. Lastly, the rooms are very stuffy and had low lighting except for the bathroom. Unfortunately I got sick during my stay here and while I could lay down and take a nap, it was hard to do with the terrible air circulation. There were other things that I liked about the hotel. The location is great and conviene the for easy access to restaurants, bars, and more. It was also very convenient to have a cafe in the their lounge area. The cafe is called Cafe Integral and I got a smoothie and it was so delicious. Also, the people at the hotel were very nice and helpful including the security that helped me getting a plastic utensil and the cleaner that was quick efficient in picking up the trash. I appreciate their service. However despite that being said, I would not stay at this place again, not until they fix their main issues which I've laid out. You're better off spending more money at the Hilton or something else. read more

Generator Staff could not have been sweeter. Space could not have been cooler. Went with a group of close to 60 from Florida Immigrant Coalition. So many cool nooks for small meetings, a great lounge space in the sun by the pool and a large multi-use area with tall tables and couches. Hip eclectic decor. Thank you Generator for hosting us! read more

The room had roaches, the sink was clogging up, it smelled like smoke when we got there & the man tried to blame it on us. he was very disrespectful & as we were leaving he told us to never to return. 0 Stars: would not recommend! read more

Had a pleasant stay without any of the horrors others mentioned. Room was clean and more modern than Hilton's across the street. Was able to check in early and paid for a late checkout. Didn't try the restaurant but the coffee shop in the lobby is solid. One thing that was strange is that king bed was really two twins pushed together, so you'd slide in the middle at night; didn't bother me but could be problematic for a couple. read more

We initially stayed here due to the few amount of hotels with parking. So glad that we did. It is close to everything you want to see in DC. The staff are super friendly. Rooms were clean. Rooms are a bit small, but we weren't in them much so it wasn't a big deal. Overall great place to stay! read more

This hotel is definitely a diamond in the rough. Central location, walking distance from many eateries, not far from famous landmarks, it's own parking lot below the building, and all for an affordable price. I stayed in a basic King bed Suite on the 5th floor and I had a floor to ceiling window with a clear view to the Washington Monument and other parts of downtown. The hotel lobby has many areas to sit, relax, or do work. The best part are the small semi-private rooms in the lobby with the huge bean bag type chairs. I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a fun and unique experience for less than you'd pay for a high class establishment. I will definitely be returning whenever I come back to DC. read more

Leaving a "definitely recommend" post for this Generator Hotel location in DC. Nicely hip, updated renovation of what used to be a Courtyard by Marriott hotel in the lovely historic & upscale Kalorama neighborhood. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalorama_(Washington,_D.C.) It has a novel assortment of well appointed accommodations from fully private en-suites to shared dorm style rooms for the budget minded traveler. With the onsite amenities of a causal coffee bar, an exotically themed restaurant , small gym and an onsite pool, it's got a lot to offer at reasonable prices towards enhancing a stay in DC. It's easy to get to by public transit (10 min walk up from the DuPont Circle station) or by taxi as it's a straight run on one of the main corridors in the area, Connecticut Ave. Tina, the onsite manager when I was there, made sure my stay at the Generator DC was a pleasant one with honoring a special request for my room, offering complimentary late check outs and a choice of coffees at the cafe bar or drinks at the restaurant throughout my stay. Next time I'm in DC, Generator is where I'll be! read more

I was basically hustled by the Generator Washington DC and Hostelworld.com. Right after trying to book for the same night, I was refused by the desk person the ability to change my check in date. I was told that I had to change my reservation date with the Hostelworld.com, and they also refused my request. They not only took the money they hold for the room, they fully charged me for a reservation I tried to cancel and never checked in for. This is a criminal business practice. read more

The elevators are both broken and they didn't bother to fix them. Instead, we have to climb eight flights of stairs to get to our room. Internet is slow or doesn't work at all. Garage parking is overpriced- don't bother, but if you do, expect staff to have a difficult time opening the gate to let you out. There is free street parking in the neighborhood right next to the hotel that is free (and unlimited on weekends). The rooms themselves are decorated nicely and the coffee shop on the first floor is convenient. read more

Room had a gap at base of wall and window and was right above the outdoor smoking area. Every time someone smoked, it came into room. Very rude staff. Much better options in DC for the money. read more

Great environment, the rooms were decorated nicely, and the staff was amazing. There were a good amount of places to just sit and study.

Was excited to stay here for a solo trip to DC for a day and had to cancel due to the passing away of my grandmother yesterday. My tickets were at a discounted rate so there was a nonrefundable clause but this is an emergency. I emailed first, however since it's a Sunday and my request was urgent, I didn't expect a response and instead called the front desk of the hotel. To whomever was at the front desk today at around 8:10am, it is very rude to cut off people while they are speaking and it is even more rude to hang up on customers when they are still speaking. I tried spelling my name out but because she continued to speak over me she typed the wrong name and I had to repeat my name multiple times. Finally I just ended up giving her my confirmation number. I couldn't even ask if I would receive an email confirming because by then she'd already hung up! I had to call back just to find out. It's hard enough having to explain the death of a loved one let alone to a stranger who won't even let you get the words out! The hotel looks stunning and I would've loved to stay and experience it under different circumstances however this just left a terrible taste with me. I will not be staying here in the future nor will I be recommending this hotel to anyone. She showed absolutely no compassion or patience, I hope in the future you all will train your staff better for situations as sensitive as this. read more
