I've stayed at The Generator multiple times and will never return after this most recent interaction.
Between the numerous fees, taxes, and hidden charges, the Generator is NOT the cheaper DC option you think it is- it ends up being far more expensive than hotels you're allowed to bring your own food into (yeah, bet they didn't tell you that part either).
Initially I was super excited to recognize Daraiyah but then she let me know that there would be an additional $200 in fees to my non-refundable, 2 (TWO!!) night stay.
I've booked non-refundable stays at the Generator before, but I've never been forced to pay hundreds of dollars in hidden fees or risk losing my entire reservation.
I ended up dropping almost $500 on a place that isn't worth half that! I was prepared to pay the deposit, but not the numerous other fees tacked on. And there was nothing in my confirmation that said I would have to pay all these fees in addition to the $60 I already paid in taxes.
While it is irrelevant that a small portion of the money I put up was returned, it is worth noting that they take the whole deposit upfront, so you're out ALL that money until they decide if they'll give it back or not.
It is not a "hold" like most places do.
While some might argue that hotels have a right to charge hidden, last minute, and whatever fees, I believe many would agree that it is unethical to do so while making the rate non-refundable. That is the equivalent of holding your client's money hostage and I don't do business with entities that act in that manner.
Furthermore, I am a 6'4 individual, and when I book a King bed, I expect it to be.... an ACTUAL King bed, not two twin beds tied together with a leash! read more
