Came here recently with a large party for dinner and loved it! Our server was very attentive and made sure we got everything we needed and came back to check on us very often. The food was very fresh, can't find anything negative to say about it! The sauce bar at Hot Spot is easily one of the best compared to other hot pot places, their house sauce is perfect. Would love if they upgraded their ordering method to an iPad as opposed to having to order from the server as that would be more efficient, but the server did make sure to come by very often so it was not an issue. read more

I have been back several times since my last review! I will definitely say that for the price, this place is so good. They have a great variety of veggies, meats, and seafood. My favorites in particular are the lamb and pork belly. The Tom Yum and Sichuan Mala broths are a good combo! Service was so slow, the hostess was also the only waitress and she would disappear for long periods of time. I don't like how you can't order off a tablet and have to ask the server each time you want more items because we couldn't eat as much that way. I have been a loyal customer of this restaurant for nearly 10 years. I first discovered your Fairfax location, and when the Chantilly location opened, I became a regular there as well. This has been one of my favorite restaurants for years, which is exactly why today's experience was so disappointing. As soon as we were seated, I politely told our server that I was in a hurry and needed to order, eat, and leave as quickly as possible. The server was friendly at first, but after taking our order, the service essentially stopped. First, my soup came out incorrectly. Mistakes happen, and I completely understand that. However, the real problem started afterward. When the rest of our food arrived, there were no plates, utensils, or even napkins on the table. I noticed our server spending more time chatting with a coworker than paying attention to the tables. Since I was short on time, I had to get up and ask for plates myself. Later, when no utensils were brought, I had to get up a second time to ask for forks and knives. What surprised me even more was the lack of water service. In almost every restaurant in America, water is one of the first things brought to the table. At our table, no water was ever served until my son became thirsty enough to ask for it himself. Only after the server realized I was clearly frustrated did they begin coming to our table repeatedly to ask if we needed anything. By then, it felt too late. Had they simply paid attention to the table from the beginning, none of these issues would have happened. A tip is meant to reflect the quality of the service provided. Other than taking our order and bringing the check, very little actual service was provided. Even so, I still left a $2 tip as a courtesy for taking our order. However, I honestly do not believe today's service deserved more. I'm not writing this review to criticize the restaurant. I'm writing it because I've enjoyed dining here for many years and hope the management will take this feedback seriously. I am the biggest fan of hot pot so naturally when I was in Chantilly and saw that Hot Spot was nearby, I had to go. And it was so so so good. I ended up getting the Massaman broth and it was so delicious. It was rich, a little spicy, a tinge sour, and perfectly balanced. I could come back and try new broths, but honestly I am still dreaming of this broth and wouldn't want anything else! The way it works is that you get to choose up to 3 meats, 3 miscellaneous meats, 3 seafood, and 3 starch. And then up to 6 vegetables. Word to the wise: if you are going with one other person, I would not get three of each. We did that and even after trying our best to eat everything, we did have leftover food which sadly would be wasted. It is AYCE so start small and order more as you go. We know this for next time! The beef, lamb, and pork belly were our three choices and they were great. My boyfriend loved the seafood option and said they were all fresh tasting. He ended up getting the sechuan broth and said it was a good spicy broth. Also the dumplings and mandu were amazing, as well as the rice cakes. I could rave all day, but I'll cut it short here. It was quite busy here but the vibes were great and everything was clean. Our server was nice and attentive (a little busy but that's okay!). In case you're uninitiated, at hot pot places like Hot Spot here, you pick your soup base from a bunch of possible options - se chuan, tom yum, herbal, etc. Then you order a bunch of raw meat and veggies to cook in your soup. You have a personal cooker for your soup and you can adjust the heat. There's also a sauce bar in the back where you mix your own flavor of sauce. Look up the sauce bar for sauce recipes. The place could get crowded on Friday and weekend nights. If the weather is cold like it's a hot pot kind of day, you can expect an hour's wait. The original Hot Spot (not this location) used to be one of the only ones in the area a few years back. Now, there are so many options. I cannot say anything stands out about this particular establishment. The food is alright. If you live nearby and don't want to drive far, it's a good hot spot option. For me, the soup bases are not as punchy here. That's only my preference. If you do prefer your soup on the lighter side, this could be a perfect "Hot Spot" for ya. read more

When I first moved to northern Virginia, this was my all time favorite place to come eat! I would normally come about once a month. All their food is very fresh and the all you can eat aspect means each time you come, you will have a new and unique dining experience. The menu of food to choose from is quite extensive. The meats, the veggies, the dumplings, the noodles, the broth. It all goes so well together. Cooking it yourself allows you to pace your meal. Everyone who works there is so nice and attentive and they're always encouraging you to order more. And the food comes out very fast after you place your order. I almost forgot about the sauce bar. So many sauces and possible combinations! My favorite is their house sauce thats a little sweet and a little spicy. There's not much in the way of interior decor, but that's fine by me. TL;DR: Quality of food was lacking, service was meh, venue was underwhelming I've heard people rave about this place, but maybe we came on an off day. When we enter, they have options for group table where you share a pot, or you can have individual pots. We opted for the individual pots. We were given menus, which have an assortment of soup bases, seafood, noodles, and meats. The menus were a bit tattered and parts were hard to read. Service was nice enough, but was hard to flag down due to the setup of the tables/barriers. Sauce bar is very standard items (stand alone ingredients: soy sauce, sesame oil, etc.) and had two house sauces. The sauce station was only on half the bar, low on supply the whole time we were there, and the area was a little dirty. Recently attended a private event showcasing hot spot's new menu items! It was such a cool experience and I'm grateful for the connections that I have. Their variation on lemonades are really good (dragonfruit lemonade), and I really enjoyed their new mushroom broth. My friends and I wanted to go to a different restaurant initially, but the wait was over an hour long. AYCE hot pot at Hot Spot did not seem like a bad alternative. There was a 40+ minute wait for individual pots, but no wait for the family-style pot, which is what we ended up doing. After putting in our order, we immediately went to the sauce bar. As per usual, I mixed the savory sesame paste with lots of minced garlic and chopped scallions. There are plenty of options here to make whatever sauce you want. For our soup base options (two for the family-style pot), we went with the SHABU SHABU BROTH and SICHUAN MALA BROTH. When they first put the pot in front of us, less than half of the pot was filled, and the pot itself wasn't that deep. We asked to fill up the pot a bit more since we would not be able to cook anything otherwise. They filled it up with hot water/base broth, which diluted the flavors of our broth. My friends who enjoyed the mala broth said it was bland and lacked mala flavor. My shabu shabu broth was pretty flavorless, too, so I had to resort to the sauce I made. Personally, I don't like eating hot pot with much sauce because the soup base should really season the cooked foods. Overall, quite disappointed with the soup base here. On the bright side, our table got to try various items and the ones I enjoyed were the following: + PRIME RIBEYE BRISKET + FATTY BRISKET + QUAIL EGGS + FISH TOFU + LOBSTER BALLS + SQUID + WIDE VERMECELLI + WATERCRESS + ENOKI MUSHROOM + NAPA + BOKCHOY + WOODEAR MUSHROOM + LOTUS ROOT I wouldn't be dying to get hot pot here again. Our first time at this location. We usually go to the Fairfax one. This is our favorite hot pot place. The food is always fresh and delicious. Our favorites things to get are the pork belly, brisket, mini dumplings and clams. They have about 6 different broths to choose from. I usually get the shabu shabu which is a very light fish broth. The sauce bar is great where you can create your own dipping sauce to pair with your hot pot or they have recipes on the screen above to help make a sauce that others have created. Mine is pretty simple soy sauce, green onions, hot chili oil, black vinegar and jalapeños.We had a party of 15 people for dinner on Monday night at 7:40pm. Decent price, no wait at 6 on a Th night and excellent service. Waiter was a young college student and very attentive and checked on us every 15-20 minutes, we were never waiting for anything. The food came out quickly, though as some mentioned the portions decreased each round. The beef and pork cuts were the best. The seafood was frozen and not fresh and the dumplings were tiny and a bit slimy. The vegetables were clean and crisp. Two had the Mala broth (not super spicy but a nice kick) and I had the TomYum. The service is always so friendly and quick, the ingredients are so fresh and the meat is always such good quality! It is also such a fun ambiance especially when you do the family style pots! I was surprised that most of the tables were family style rather than personal pots, I feel like I remember them all being personal pots in the past, which I prefer. Service was good and restaurant was clean, but I never understood why they only give each person one flimsy napkin given all the splashing that hot pot can involve. For broth we got chicken, shabu shabu, tom yum, and mala. I recommend any of them except for chicken. I enjoyed the ribeye and lamb meat, they were thinly sliced and tender. Fatty brisket was not as tender. The crab was super mushy. The clams and mussels tasted pretty fishy. Would prefer the seafood quality to be more decent or don't offer it at all. A coworker asked if I wanted to meet her here for a late lunch, since she had a Groupon. It had been a while since I'd enjoyed a shabu shabu experience, so I met her in the parking lot and we walked in together. Since it was my first time there, the waiter went though the menu options with us, including the types of broth and the number of items we could order during each round. I especially liked all the different seafood items that were available! After we made our first order of items and broth, my friend took me to the sauce station at the back of the restaurant. I was able to craft my perfect dipping sauce just as our items were being delivered. Everything tasted fresh. I really liked the daikon, enoki mushrooms, and the mussels. We were able to get three rounds to enjoy a little bit of everything. (We didn't order the max each time, though.) We both ate until we were very full, but since everything is pretty healthy, we didn't feel heavy at all. The service was great throughout the meal. I really liked the setup of the restaurant, since you get to enjoy your own private hot pot for cooking if you are dining with a friend. Very casual and popular hot pot place! I've been coming here occasionally for the past few years and service has been consistently good, food also good. There is plenty of parking out front, located to the right of At Home. On a Saturday at 5pm, the place was empty and at 6, there were more people coming in, but not very busy at all. I've also been here around 8pm on the weekend and there was a wait. Overall, it's a nice place to eat with a group of friends and servers check on you pretty frequently enough which is nice. Bought a lunch groupon deal. With other new shabu places sprouting around dmv, popularity of hot spot seems to have died down a bit. We were the only table in the store. Service was ok. Food came out quickly. Just be aware that they have a sign up by the door that 18% gratuity is automatically charged to all discounted diners. I normally tip 15% only for dining. Apparently I didn't see it when I was walking in since that was the only sign posted in the store. That was the only sign throughout the store. They also didn't state it in Groupon fine print. So what you saved on Groupon deal is back to their pocket. 2 stars off since they weren't transparent with the redemption terms. read more

My friend and I had dinner at Hot Spot and were sorely disappointed! This pains me to write as I have been going to Hot Spot for a long time. I have noticed the portion sizes and the service going down hill each time I go, but my family and I enjoy their food so we deal with it. My recent visit was horrible! First, my friend and I ordered water and sprite. This didn't arrive at our table until the food showed up. Why so long? Once the food arrived, all of our veggies were piled high onto one plate instead of separated on a platter as has been the case in the past. So we had to dig through this bohemith pile to get different veggies. When we asked why we couldn't get them separated out onto different plates like always, they told us they didn't have any more. YET, the Asian family who came in right after us and sat next to us got all their food served on nice platters spread out. So did the other Asian group of guys sitting to the right of us. The meat tasted gamey and was like paper. They gave us two scallops. I know it's all you can eat but come on...maybe if they gave us something like 4 since there were two of us, we wouldn't have had to keep ordering them. My friend ordered crab. I wish I had taken a picture of what they gave her. They were tiny 1/4 parts of a very small crab's body with pinky size meat. Talk about ridiculous!!! Finally, we went to pay. My friend gave the waiter $40 cash for her $33.65 share. Instead of bringing her back the change, he kept it. We had to ask for the change so we could decide our tip. And, this wasn't all that we faced that night!! Overall, this was the worst experience ever at Hot Spot and needless to say, they have lost two very loyal customers and their families. Had an amazing time at Hot Spot! The whole concept was explained to our party as soon as we sat down at our family style table. We selected two broth types: the Spicy Mala broth and the Tom Yum broth. Since we chose family style, we had opted for all you can eat. This option allowed us to pick 3 options from every category on the menu like meat, veggies, noodles, etc. The broths were great! It is fair to note that the Spicy Mala broth was indeed spicy. There is also a sauce bar. If you need help or are overwhelmed by all the sauce options the waitress can help you make tasty concoctions. Notable favorites from our hot pot meal was the: spicy pork, lamb, udon noodles, dumplings, bok choy, king oyster mushrooms, and ramen noodles. The service was attentive as our food was brought out right away and we were always waited on when we needed assistance. I would definitely come back here for a special occasion. For all you can eat, I think $30 pp isn't terribly expensive as you can a lot for your money.
