Only complaint - don't go here on a cool or cold day, early in the morning or late, because they keep this place freezing cold. One morning it was 41 degrees outside and they had the air conditioning running with ceiling fans and the doors open. Since it had been raining the outside air was horribly chill, and the hot food got cold instantly. Yet another independent coffee shop in Long Beach, in a prime location on Broadway just two blocks from the beach. To be honest, I usually walk right past this place and trek a little further to Portfolio or Steelhead. Perhaps the tables full of surly old men who are seemingly always sitting outside chain smoking cigarettes have deterred me. The dark interior has strong bohemian vibes, and plenty of seating. The baristas were very down to earth and polite-definitely no hipster pretension here. The pastry case looked sad, featuring an unattractive assortment of floppy, sweaty croissants, muffins, etc. I was starving, so I got a Pecan Roll on recommendation from the cashier. It was disgusting. Doughy and bland, with a stale chemical aftertaste. I ate the syrupy pecans off the top and could not continue. My Iced Americano, on the other hand, was excellent. Perfectly made, with rich, bold flavor. I would grab a coffee here again in a pinch, but with so many other spots in the area that have great pastries, I have no reason to return. read more

This corner coffee shop is perfectly placed cady corner to Bixby Park and The Bluff. It is spacious without feeling like a fast food dining lounge. The pastries I've tried this far include the cheesecake brownie (yum, rich, moist, slightly crumbly) and bran muffins (great for a sweet treat with less self-judgement). The only reason I am giving this place 1 star is because a star is required to write a review. I had the worst experience here with the so-called manager on duty who was so wildly unprofessional, this person needs to be straight up fired on the spot. I ordered a hot apple cider, no issues and nothing to write home about. While waiting, I watched the manager berate and bitch at two other workers who appeared to have come in to help but subsequently left because the manager kept talking loud shit about them. He seemed to be mad that they weren't doing his job for him. Once they left, He looked at all the drinks in queue, sighed, then chugged his own drink til it was empty. Then proceeded to make drinks that were ordered after mine even after seeing what it was. Then fiddled with the espresso machine out of frustration of not wanting to do his job.  Ignoring the fact that I was in a rush to get to work and not even mentioning it to the staff, I asked another barista what was going on with my cider. To my knowledge, I had no interaction with the manager, and I could only assume he was traumatized by apples somehow. He lackadaisically made the cider after spending a good 30 seconds tamping the same scoop of espresso, then he puts the cider on the counter and says "Here's that very important cider." EXCUSE ME, I don't need your attitude! I asked for the manager, and he said he was the manager. I asked for the owner's information, and he said "no, you're 86'ed. don't ever come back here." OH HELL NO. I asked for his name, and he refused to give it to me until he saw I wouldn't leave without it. I didn't raise my voice or give you a hard time or insult anything about you, so I did not deserve this one bit.  How dare you be really shitty at the one job you have, then give customers a straight up attitude about it for asking about their drinks, spend all this time drinking coffee complaining fidgeting with the espresso machine talking all this shit instead of doing your one job, 86 a customer for asking for a manager, then refuse to give out your name cuz you just know you fucked it up. I am so serious, you shouldn't even be interacting with people. Maybe the other baristas would have a shred of willingness to work with you if you were at all professional, respectful, mature, pleasant, nice, tolerable, in any sort of way. I am so serious, you need to get fired. Go back and learn how to be a polite person with some damn work ethic. If you don't get fired, please quit. Please do all of us a favor and quit. Please quit and get a job where you can ruin some other neighborhood's mornings. It is so unfortunate that the resident gay coffee shop in town has this trainwreck working for it. They decided to stuff all of my food order into one small bag, then proceed to separate it after handling the food several times as well as give me back one of the food items in the original bag that had food all over it. I also ordered two coffees off the menu right next to register yet I was repeating my order several times because the person wasn't understanding Irish Cream Mocha for some reason. I got to the point where I was just pointing at the sign we could both see, not to mention they are the specials, you should know them. Speaking of Irish Cream Mocha, it tasted basically like someone just opened a SwissMiss and just added cream and hot water. The fact that my food had crap all around it and my mocha tasted like imitation coco powder, I threw everything away. What a waist of money. I know for sure if those business owners or workers were out somewhere they would not want to have been given the same horrible experience. This place has really gone down in the last year. I used to live around the corner and enjoyed coming here with my dog. The coffee was decent (but never as good as portfolio or rose park) and the people were nice. I was in the area for the farmers market Saturday and decided to pop in. Boy do I regret that. In response to my request for an almond milk latte, I received a extremely watered down cup of nasty. I took my cup back to them and told them that it didn't taste good and that it was very diluted. They did not appear pleased with my complaint, the guy looked irritated. They agreed to add some more coffee, after telling me that next time I should order it with an extra shot (as if this was all my fault). Well the repaired drink was still nasty, It was no longer weak but now strong enough where I could taste the coffee and it was extremely bitter and cheap tasting. It tasted like the cheapest kind of bitter coffee you can find prepared in a drip coffee maker, with watered down almond milk added. Totally undrinkable. It seemed a waste dumping my six dollar coffee into the trash cans at the park, but that shit was just undrinkable. It was one of those experiences where you feel like someone tricked you and stole your money. It left a bad taste in my mouth literally. I was getting a haircut down the street and had some time to kill, so I thought I'd give this place a try. I loved the lowkey environment; the staff were friendly, and everyone there was chilling with work or friends. For a drink, I asked what they recommended if I like things on the sweeter side; something with their lavender syrup. They recommended a lavender honey latte with oat milk, which was $6 for a large. I also got their chicken pesto panini (can't remember what it's called on their menu), for $14. The drink was for sure overly sweet, and I tasted the honey more than anything. It needed to be a lot stronger for me to enjoy it at all. As for the sandwich, I could have sworn it came with tomatoes and arugula; something additional, but it literally only came with chicken, melted cheese, and I could hardly notice the pesto. It was a sad sandwich. It tasted good, but it lacked a lot of flavor and heartiness. I was really disappointed with it. Both the drink and the sandwich were not worth the price. read more

Been coming here since 2004. It really hasn't changed much. Still has a good assortment of drinks and pastries. Staff is friendly and helpful. Customers are welcoming. And there's a sense of fellowship and camaraderie that can be found here. Great place to gather with friends, or study, enjoy a date night, have a night cap, or do some work. It's cozy and you can people watch through the windows or sit outside. Bixby Park is across the street, so is Park Pantry. Star of Siam is next door and my fave Chinese spot (Chen's) is a few doors down too. Grab a book, cup of coffee/tea, some conversation, or dessert, have a seat or grab to-go. Having worked as a "Marketing Director" in a previous job, I have an inkling of what marketing is all about and it goes without saying that the name of your company should reflect your product ("Duh") Therefore, "Hot Java" should change its name to "Luke Warm Java" if they're going to serve customers luke-warm coffee. That, or serve me some hot fucking java, dammit! You don't have to name it "Hot Fucking Java" but if "Hot Java", make it hot! FLIES!!! GROSS! I have come here for years and most recently I have been grossed out. There are flies in the display case: both gnats and huge flies where the muffins are kept in the display case closest to the register. Today Oct 25 at 7:50pm I told the guy again and he said, "yeah we get that a lot, we try.... so what can I get for you." It's gross it has been weeks I bring it to their attention and each time they don't do anything to fix the problems. I needed to have a meeting with a client and wanted somewhere with free wifi and lots of seating. after reading the reviews, i chose Hot Java because most of the reviewers said it had these options, which turns out to be true. The place is small, but no smaller than your average Starbucks. The barista's were very friendly and there was a lot of seating, window box seats with large tables to share, a loooong outlet strip for lap tops (this is a great idea) and lots of comfy arm chairs for people looking to read a magazine or just chill - OH, they also have outdoor seating with smoking and/or Dogs OK . I had an iced caramel coffee.. not bad. The crowd was diverse, there was no overwhelming "in crowd" of any kind. A couple of people joined our large table to share it with us, which I like because it is very library like,. I hate when one person is at a huge table and hogging it when you are stuck with three people at a little corner bistro or something, so i like that people seemed cool about sharing the big tables. ONE drawback=PARKING.. Bixby Park is across the street and there are apartments ALL around, which probably don't offer multiple parking space or underground for their tenants because cars line all the surrounding streets. I stopped by this coffee shop to get a quick cappuccino before yoga today. I had read reviews both good and bad about Hot Java, so I was a bit curious as to how my visit was going to pan out. Upon walking in, the place seems like a decent joint to get some work done - ample amounts of tables/chairs/seating. The coffee was hot and mediocre. The first sip was surprisingly decent, but the quality seemed to dip with each subsequent gulp. Midway through my cappuccino, I realized that the coffee was really only decent because it was scalding - once at a normal temperature, the cappuccino simply tasted wandered down and bland. Maybe a second try of this place and their straight up espresso might redeem them, but for now, I'm not inclined to come back. Bottom line: I don't think I'll be back in the near future. read more

Ok,let me start by saying this is my first review but certainly won't be my last! You yelpers have really helped me broaden my horizons here in LBC where the tendency to swerve towards Belmont Shore in search of a good meal is ALL too common. Thanks for taking me to new and great places! I'm forever grateful! Now, about Hot Java.....I love the place! Sure, unruly dogs (with equally unruly owners) can be a nuisance and the coffee may not be the best in town, but what it lacks in sophistication it more than makes up for in comfort and ambience. The owner is funny, engaging, and really makes an effort to make you feel at home. For those of us who work from home, getting out of isolation is important, at least it is to me. On my morning coffee run (laptop in tow) it's nice to see the same faces settled around their macbooks and Dells, cranking out spreadsheets or hammering out morning emails over a steaming cup of coffee. Pass on the "to go" cup and grab a big mug and you save both $$$ AND the environment, both great things in my book. The couches are comfy, the outlets plentiful and the wi-fi is pretty speedy, especially for a crowded coffee joint. The music/TV's can be a little loud so if you have a conference call to catch, it's probably best not to take it here. I read other reviews about the food being mediocre to bad but my experience has been pretty good, so far. I had a turkey and cranberry pannini yesterday that was served with kettle chips...pretty standard for a coffee shop. The bread was fresh and the service was fast...though it was a bit expensive for a "heat and eat" at $8.95. But, again, I am paying for the convenience and atmosphere so I will gladly spend the extra couple of bucks. If you are homophobic, please stay away and save us all the trouble...but if you are looking for a diverse, fun and friendly place, this is it. See ya there. read more
