This is a nondescript yet charming place staffed by very friendly folk, good for breakfast or lunch. Upon entering, we were greeted, seated, and given coffee almost immediately (they have very nice cups with their logo them). Breakfast covers all the basics, and as you might expect from their name, they have a fairly large selection of pancakes and french toasts. The pancakes are quite large, and the flavored ones are often (but not always) based on the toppings. We were surprised not to see a breakfast combo on the menu, so we asked our waitress. She indicated that there was indeed a combo, their "Hungry Man/Woman" plate, which featured 2 eggs, 2 strips of bacon one sausage patty, home fries and a choice of 1 pancake (Hungry Man) or piece of French Toast (Hungry Woman). Our Hungry Man orders came out very quickly, but even so our coffee cups were refilled twice before that! This was good, if somewhat basic, fare, though I'm sure the specialty pancakes, omelets, benedicts and french toasts have some interesting flavors. Still really great bread, but lacking in presentation and flavors of other items. I came back here to try them again. Has been a while since I've been here, and wanted to make sure they were still good. The server I got was a little new, so she didn't have a good cadence to ordering or assisting. but with a little coaching from myself and her senior I was able to get proper seating and get my order placed. The order wasn't translated correctly to the kitchen though, and I ended up getting items that were cooked correctly but literally placed on the plate with wanton abandon. Feeling coy, I decided to take it in my own hands and properly plate my own breakfast. I cut the bread on a diagonal, layer the pieces, drizzle some syrup, and take some pics. Same with the pancake, smear some peanut butter and crumble the bacon (they didn't have banana, so I couldn't do a full elvis pancake) The bread is still really good! The cinnamon swirl bread was soaked well and had a great cinnamon flavor. the cook of the french toast was just right, and it was custardy and flavorful. The pancake was a little lackluster, the peanut butter was cheap and unroasted, so it didn't have a strong peanut butter flavor. the bacon was crispy and salty, which helped a bit. but the peanut butter needed a good roast before being ground up. The order was also a little pricy for what you get, coming up to about 25 bucks for a pancake and two french toast. The add-ons made this breakfast a little too expensive for the quality. Presentation aside, the food was good overall. There was some issues in ordering and with the quality that I got, but the bread's still good and the food's still pretty tasty. Stopped in this morning with Demanding Dan for breakfast, at his suggestion. I hadn't been in about 7 or 8 years, partly because I recall that their corned beef hash was from a can (and I am a huuuge CBH fan), but also because there are so many other great breakfast places in the area. First of all, notwithstanding the "help wanted" sign, I thought service was great. Our server, Jenny, was top-shelf. Checked on us constantly, always courteous and efficient. DD ordered his go-to....cinnamon swirl French toast w a side of sausage, and water. I ordered the veggie omelet. Comes w home fries and toast (rye for me) and coffee. Food came out pretty quickly. Dan really enjoyed his meal, and rated it 4-star. My 3-egg omelet was very good; loaded w broccoli, peppers, mushrooms, spinach and onions. My HF were not hot, just barely warm and a bit mushy. Last, a bit pricey, considering only one of us had a beverage. Extra $1.50 for a slice of cheese on my omelet, $3.50 for a side of 2 sausage patties... Total of $29.68 b4 tip. I've been here twice while down in the area. I love the hotcakes special quesadilla. Basically, a buffalo chicken quesadilla with lettuce and ranch that has home fries on the side. Wish I would have taken a picture but after driving 6 hours to get there I was starving lol. The place had not been busy the couple times I visited. The server was pleasant, I had the same one both visits. The decaf I ordered was not good. I'm sure I'll be back again because I don't think I can get sick of that quesadilla. It was tradition to go here with my dad. I have not been since he passed away. So my mom and I went. Had a roach fall off a ketchup bottle when I went to use it. My parents had restaurants when I was in school and we served home fries that are very similar to the way Hot Cakes prepares them. The item of excellence is their homemade bread. They have a cinnamon swirl toast that is one-inch thick, they grill it and cover it in butter. OMG, take me now. Plus the service is good and fast. So this place is a winner. This was a tough call between 2 and 3 stars, because the food was pretty good and the pricing was what you'd expect for a breakfast place. What was weird was---well the service. We distinctly saw a two tiered system -almost like a caste system. Many customers were clearly regulars and the servers fawned over them -spending lots of time chit-chatting and checking on their general well-being. Being first-timers, we just didn't get the same level of attention. In fact the level of attention we received was not very good. It started off when we were seated and the hostess walked us right by the stack of menus and menulessly seated us. Believe me, it took a good 5-10 minutes before the menus showed up. And as the meal proceeded, there was no "how was your food?", no "can I get you anything?", just a perfunctory coffee refill after we had to request one. Truth be told, the coffee was as disappointing as the service- no other way to say it.. but it was weak and bland. Now the food was another story, I ordered a three egg "Create Your Own Omelette" for a $5.80 base, plus mushrooms for a buck more and Kielbasa for $1.60 more. I upgraded from the standard toast choices and paid 85 cents more for one of their "Homestyle Toasts" and went for their Marble Rye, which ended up being an outstanding choice. It was GREAT, and as thick as two slices as standard bread. Look, my breakfast of good home fries, a good omelette, GREAT toast, and below par coffee ran around eleven bucks --- which is about normal for a breakfast like this in a place like this. But the service just wasn't there. If two stars is "I've experienced better" -well, that's a pretty accurate and honest assessment of what we saw today. read more

I've never been inclined to go into Hot Cakes, since the outside always looked so uninviting, and not the kind of place that really shouts "There's good food in here!" I went with my girlfriend, and we ordered a standard breakfast. Omelette, corned beef, home fries, and some pancakes. They all tasted great, but nothing that would entice me to come back. However, the one interesting thing they had were the specialty pancakes. I had the Reeses Peanut Butter pancake, and I wasn't a huge fan of it. It was just pancakes and peanut butter inside. I would have loved to try the others, but this is what I was recommended from a fellow diner. When I had mentioned my food allergies the waitress saw a free pass to make this THE MOST UNCOMFORTABLE MEAL OF MY LIFE. When someone with food allergies comes in please make them feel welcomed instead of interrogating them as to how they knew they were allergic, or if it is a real allergy or just a diet trend? Typically I am a very open person who is willing to share just about anything to help someone understand better. This waitress made me feel so little, uncomfortable and had I not been with friends who lived locally I would have made a scene there to prove a point of how horrible she was treating me by asking quite loudly if it was a severe allergy and how I was diagnosed? I shared my diagnosis with her which is quite private then asked her to stop and she continued to ask more questions which I did not answer but with a stare. I visited weeks ago but was not able to put into proper words without cursing the whole time. We got here 9:15 on Sunday morning and was seated right away. By the time we left there was a wait so that's some good guidance for Sunday morning if you prefer not to wait for a table. The place is cute and had an awesome coffee / diner aroma. Our service was excellent and the portions generous especially the pancakes which were HUGE! Overall the food was just average though and the pancakes actually tasted odd. There was an after taste that was like chemical or smoked. I didn't enjoy them at all and MUCH prefer IHOP and their crappy service and smaller portions for pancakes. The home fries were above average and well done just the way we like them. I got mine with onions and would have liked it more if the onions were more well done. Overall a very pleasant experience but was disappointed in the pancakes massive portion and all. Hard pressed betwen 3 and 4 stars. This is my go to breakfast spot. No frills here. The prices are cheap, the menu is always the same, and the staff is more than friendly. The coffee is always refilled and the food is always hot. The decor is basic with touches of grandma's house. The homemade bread is my favorite part of the experience. Everything else food wise is just A-Ok. I always get my home fries well done so they are crispy and not squishy. My bacon and cheddar omelette is always A-Ok. Once inside, the interior is cozy, with tables for two and four all around, and a high top "bar" area. The aroma of breakfast and fresh baked bread will make you order as though your stomach has super powers and a completely disregard for its normal capacity limits. Go ahead, it will be worth it. I ordered three eggs, scrambled, with home fries and homemade marble-rye toast. If you order any toast not from their selection of homemade varieties, how dare you. You will regret it. The toast arrived super thick and soft, the eggs were perfectly cooked, and the home fries were seasoned and cooked well. My breakfast date ordered the same, but his eggs were over easy and he had kielbasa on the side, which he loved, and the portion was huge. Because of aforementioned perceived stomach super powers, we also ordered a side of french toast, made with homemade cinnamon swirl bread, and just one chocolate chip pancake. The french toast was incredible. I am normally not wowed by french toast, but holy cow, don't pass it up. The pancake was also fantastic (my super powers failed so I took it to-go). Went on Fathers Day and as I expected to wait to be seated that wasn't the issue. We were seated quickly. The wait staff were in fighting for tables, waited 20 minutes once seated to order (waitress stated "gonna be a long time before the food comes out"), no drinks until AFTER we received our food, THEN no utensils given and waited another 15 minutes before getting those. To top it off, at the end paid receipt that WASNT MINE. Mine was $9 more so they credited my card to then charge the $9 more. Classy establishment. Fits right in with the town! read more

I wouldn't go here if you are in a hurry because there is a line to get seating (moves quickly) and it does take some time to get the food out, but have a coffee and a great Sunday morning conversation.
