I love the Horsehead primarily because they tend to pour me a double when I pay for a single. Damp, dark and divey, strangely-constructed, full of colorful and unsavory characters + Eugene-style hipsters + UO students. This is not a perfect bar by any means, but I think its imperfections add to its charms. I like their strange taste in art + pictures of horses' heads. I also like their nachos and fried pickles. I won't step foot in a place like this during the day, because it's a cave, but at 1 a.m., it's a better place to be than most bars around it (Davis, Jameson's, Eugene City Brewery, etc.), most of which are trying too hard to be what they're not. read more

This pains me to write this review. I used to live a block away from this bar, back when it was great. I would frequent it at least five times a week back then. Like all great things, the horsehead's heyday has come to an end. The bartenders seem like they would rather be doing something else and have major attitude, and not in a good way. My friend and I went here to grab a well known shot, which happens to have a sugared lemon that accompanies it, which makes the shot taste the way it should, like german chocolate cake. I did not invent this delicious shot, its been around for a long time. The bar tender that helped us put down our shots minus the sugared lemons and told us the price, we handed over the money and he turns and gets our change. Then goes to move on to the next patron...without giving us the sugared lemons. So, we ask for the sugared lemons, he sighs loudly and makes a deal about getting the lemons for us. What the actual hell dude, its part of the drink. Its not our fault you forgot part of the drink. It would be like giving someone Coke when they ordered a Jack and Coke. This is one of my favorite bars in Eugene. It's just about the ideal form of a bar (in the Platonic sense.) It's relaxed and unpretentious, it has a good selection of drinks, awesome bartenders, many different rooms and outside areas, heat lamps, horse art, and the food is excellent. Pretty sure there is nothing wrong with this place. It's just grungy enough, dark enough, and friendly enough for me. Nice bartenders, fun pool tables, and usually never too crowded. I am pretty sure the only way I get through my evening shifts at work is because I know the BLT with spicy mayo is there when I come out the other end. I do wish there were more smaller booths because you feel bad taking up one of their hugeeee booths with just two people, but now I'm just searching for something! So if you need some late night grub (there's a reason it's won best of Eugene bar food many years in a row!) and a couple good/cheap drinks, this is your place. read more

Great spot for late night drinking and eating. Full menu served till 2am. I got a HUGE bowl of red beans and rice that I couldn't come close to finishing for just $4.50. I saw a cheeseburger running about that also looked delicious. A friendly staff and pool tables in the back. Also a great patio. Alright man, I still like this place. It does what it does well, and the art and music are right up my alley. Everything I wrote before about the food still stands (short version: get the gumbo, collards, or nachos), and the kitchen is pretty damn consistent with the quality. The inconsistent pour strength problem has been sorted out, and yeah, they're not as strong as they used to be, but I ain't gettin' any younger, and I'm told that you can't live without a live-r. The douchey patron problem has all but evaporated thanks to good bouncing and the downtown revitalization (more places that attract douchey patrons). The staff are outstanding human beings who will more than return the favor if you treat them with respect. Delivery is available via Pony Express. Be advised that the fried things don't travel well unless you live pretty close by. read more

This is always the bar that I end up in at the end of the night, mostly because of the food and the pool. Their drinks are a little pricey for what I like to pay for wells but it looks like their beer price/selection is good. Favorite menu item is the cheese fries with bacon-- they are just disgustingly good. You gain weight and start breathing heavy, even just looking at the things. read more

I wouldn't recommend it. The service was mediocre. Not very friendly. The bartender and cook both drinking on the job. And the food wasn't that great. The fries were limp and not fresh. The burger was basic and you had to add cheese and bacon for a 2$ charge each. And it comes with lettuce but I got spring mix on mine. Frozen patty on the burger not fresh. read more

Things have definitely improved here. The salads are surprisingly awesome. The honey mustard dressing is very spicy, would be my only quibble on that count .... And, in the summer, flies (as always) spring eternal on the patio. read more

Here are the results: Coleslaw had wayyyy to much sauce, liked the dill but it was overpowered by mayo Wings needed to be crispier again wayyyy to much sauce, they were gooey but not in a good way, ranch dip was ok but blue cheese being paired would have been better Hush Puppies needed more flavor, a lot more, perhaps a dipping sauce more than ranch would have been appropriate Mashed potatoes were lumpy and the gravy unimpressive Overall not impressed at all, don't waste your money, you can do better at your own home. read more

If you are interested in a bar that has a horrible layout and is as dirty as a dive-bar and with even more coked-up bartenders, but with 'club' prices, then this is the bar for you. Happy hour prices are ok, but the food is tasteless and greasy, the service is totally sub-par, and the place is dirty and dingy from years of the staff never cleaning anything. There are several really good bars right across the street. My husband and I went here last night. We ordered fried catfish, collards, potato mashers and mac n cheese. The catfish was mushy and tasted like the vat grease hadn't been changed in years. The macaroni was worse than boxed mac n cheese, the potatoes were dry / hard and the gravy was bland. The collards were the only thing edible. There were several flies flying around and there was a bucket on the floor catching water from a leak in the ceiling. The bar tenders were ignoring us at the bar when we were trying to pay even though both of us only took 2 bites of our plates because every local who went up to the bar got helped before we did. Came in with two buddies for dinner and a few pitchers last night. Ordered the catfish, which is invariably fantastic, only this time it was served up with a little too much attitude for my liking. We'd been waiting on the catfish for well over an hour when I decided to confer with our bartender, calmly I might add, regarding the whereabouts of our dinner. I was told that they were busy and that it would be "Right out", to which I replied, "Cool, no worries," as I am generally a pretty laid back dude. Fifteen minutes later some surly barback delivers our meals and proceeds to chide us for having been so impatient. Guy says to us, "The next time you want fast food, there's a Taco Time down the street," among other things. Now, I realize full well that this is Eugene, and one must have low expectations when dealing with its populace, but am I wrong to demand a modicum of decency from its service workers? As a paying customer, do I not have the right to respectfully inquire as to the whereabouts of my meal after I've waited over an hour for it? I think I do. A classier joint would have compensated us for the catfish, but that's neither here nor there--this is Eugene, after all. All I ask is that I'm shown some courtesy--I'll be far more likely to tip my usual 20%, and everybody wins. Is this an inordinate request? I don't think so. Fat, bearded barback, though you clearly lack the formal training, I know you can muster up the decency to not be such a twat. Heed my words, brother; you'll make more money I promise you. The best pool in eugene. Food is decent except when they over bread the hell out of some stuff. Atmosphere is good, too many kooks occasionally. However there is one aspect that makes me never want to return...The bartenders are probably the worst in the city of Eugene. I used to frequent the Horse Head. It was a place were I could comfortably take folks with disabilities to enjoy a beer, play some pool or eat a bar burger. Tonight I went in there with a gentleman who struggles with being in the community and connecting with others. He was feeling exceptionally good about his age and appearance and was speaking with other patrons to this affect. The brief exchanges were received well by the other patrons who complimented him and gave him welcoming smiles.There was an extremely drunk individual who was at the counter, had ordered a beer and had no money. As the bar tender was attempting to explain to him that he had to go get money then she would serve him the gentlemen I was with started to talk to him about how good he looks. I was in the middle of asking my friend to give the patron space as he was in a conversation with the bar tender when the bar tender started pounding her fist on the counter and yelling at the gentlemen I was with. She exclaimed loudly that they refuse to serve him and we promptly left. What a horribly embarrassing situation this bar and the extremely unprofessional servers created for him. What a shameful act of discrimination. The dirty looks and aggressive behavior exhibited by the servers will for ever keep me from ever entering this establishment again. Shame on you..... read more

Since the Horsehead has changed staff I have eaten their twice. the first time they where okay, not on par with what they once where but worth another shot. Last night I wanted something close to home, we went with Horsehead, My Girlfriend ordered a vegetarian burger and I ordered the 10 sirloin. The veg burger was well, she compared it to eating cardboard, the fries where soggy and unseasoned. The steak, well I got mashed potatoes and cornbread, lets start there, the mashed potatoes where more of a soup, with and odd seafood taste, a plus they did have mushrooms in the gravy. the corn bread was dark orange it did have a good flavor with a bit of sweetness, the cornbread was the best part for the sides. The steak, ordered medium rare, of course, was cool when eaten, the inside was more red, nearer rare the medium, overall it was still pretty good. I think this time I am done with the Horsehead, there is a lot of good food downtown, unfortunately i will have to find a different place for bar food. read more

Been here a couple times with my daughter. Saturday nights are busier than others (as to be expected) but worth it. The heating lamps outside in the patio area are a nice touch as well. A great spot to go for a mid afternoon adult beverage with a book in hand. The location is excellent as well since I ride the local bus. read more

Hands down the WORST bartender I've ever encountered. Not sure of her name, but she treated me and my fellow CUSTOMER very rudely. I will never go back there, and am telling all of my friends to do the same because of that bartender. And listen, I've bartended and worked in the service industry, I get that sometimes you just have a shitty night, but this bartender went above and beyond to just be a straight up bitch. After waiting at the bar for a good while, she nonchalantly asked us what we wanted. In the middle of our order, she interrupts us to laugh at something one of her friends said. She then walked away, and left us wondering whether or not she actually took our order. When she came back, she berated my friend, asking him what was in the drink he ordered, and where someone would order a drink like that... "At lucky noodle?! Do you really except to come here and order something like that??" Considering it was a simple gin gimlet.... yes, I do. She took our money, told us to get used to it because everyone thinks she's a bitch, and then threw our change on the counter at us. read more

Used to like going to this bar. Last night however was a completely different story. I'm hard of hearing, I've got what's called a cookie bite hearing loss (the Audiogram looks like there's a bite out of the line graph) and its specifically in the speech range, so not only is it hard for me to have good balance, it's really difficult for me to hear myself so I shout a lot especially when there's loud music. We got there around 9:30/10pm after we had gone bowling. I walked in and went straight for the bathroom, after coming out of the bathroom, my friend got me a glass of water and we went to go play pool. I never ever ordered a drink from horsehead last night. So we're playing pool (remember balance problems+trying to do trick shots) I see my boyfriend get a drink. When he came back I had two (2) sips, the bartender came over told the bouncer to kick me out because I was drunk. I hadn't been drinking, I'm 26, and I'm extremely livid with this place and their lack of ability to tell the difference between a stumbling drunk and a deaf person. read more
