I was referred to Horizon Divers to complete my checkout dives for my PADI open water certification, and I had a terrific time! I can't talk from experience about a lot of the logistics since I am a new diver and inexperienced, but the staff and overall two days of diving were great. Mike Ryan was the best-- if you are a new diver or if you haven't been diving in a bit, Mike is the guy to see. He was friendly, patient, and always made me feel completely comfortable. He took the time to make sure that I got everything right, helped refresh my skills since it had been some time since I had started my cert, and he was an excellent guide underwater. All staff members were very knowledgeable and flexible. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone looking to dive in Key Largo. Was able to arrange a last minute dive with Horizon, and I'm glad we did. Captain Troy and crew were efficient and helpful, and they picked great sites for wrecks and marine life. We were not rushed and had plenty of time to dive, but we wasted no time getting to the site and getting back. There are rinse and disinfectant tanks available at the dock. The shop and dive sites are in different locations, but they are less than a mile apart. read more

This was a great experience. Fair pricing, GREAT crew!! I posted this late as we were there in August, but last year we dove with a competitor and it was awful. I was a little worried about going back to dive Key Largo after the last experience, but after diving with Horizon and their crew, well, I'll see y'all this summer! I just completed my Advanced Open Water training with Bobby on April 11th and 12th. My third experience with the Horizon Divers team and I can say I came away quite pleased once again. I completed the PADI e-learning course prior to arriving at the shop. I was introduced to Bobby and was quite impressed at his accomplishments as a diver and individual. He provided me his verbal resume and then asked me what I wanted to accomplish during our dives beyond meeting the training requirements. This led to a discussion to what my long term goals were. As an experienced public safety trainer I was quite impressed by his delivery, depth of knowledge and engagement. I came away very confident in my training. During the course of our dives I had the opportunity to observe our captain (Jessica) at work. As is to be expected of the Horizon Divers team she was quite personable, competent and capable. I truly appreciate the attention to detail and safety the boat crews take in insuring that each excursion is successful. Decided last minute to go with Horizon Divers after seeing negative reviews for Rainbow Reef and am so glad I did! Can't speak to the other company, but was very happy with the outstanding service we received from Dive Master Bobby, Rich, and Captain Joe. We are scuba novices and these were our first dives since getting certified in September. Everyone could not have been more accommodating, warm, helpful, and professional. There were five in our party and only two other divers on the boat, so we were well taken care of and received all the attention we needed to feel comfortable. Conditions were poor due to recent gale force winds, so Rich suggested we dive with a guide for an extra $25 per person--worth every penny. Bobby did such an amazing job guiding us through the strong surge without expending too much energy, so we were still able to enjoy the dive while seeing plenty of wildlife and coral reefs even in lower visibility of 20-25'. Joe and Rich helped us with our gear and boat ride at every point in the process so we barely lifted a finger. Very enjoyable experience even in rough conditions. Unfortunately weather conditions remained poor during our trip so we did not get to dive with them again like we intended. Will 100% book again with this company when we return to Key Largo. I was referred to HD by another highly rated dive shop that was too busy on the holiday weekend to accommodate me. This little change made my vacation. The HD staff was ultra professional on the phone and when I got to the shop my diving life changed in an instant. I was looking to get my 12 year old son in the water for the first time. He had been talking about going diving with Daddy for the past 2 months so I had a lot riding on this first experience with him. Enter Mike Ryan, Scuba Master, Bubble Guru and the Right Hand of King Neptune himself. He instantly connected with my son and walked him through every step of the way. After the pool instruction, we boarded the boat that was located right behind the shop. The boat was comfortable, not crowded, fully geared, no hassle and stocked with candy and Capri Sun for post dive refreshment. As we got into the water, I can tell my son was nervous, but Mike was with him all the way. They took about 15 minutes to get down that 20 foot descent line. Mike has the patience of Job and was committed to giving my son the best experience ever. After that first dive, my son was hooked and did 3 more dives with me, Mike by his side the whole time. He now wants to get certified and be my permanent dive buddy. We will be going back to HD next year for his check dives and Mike will definitely be the one doing them for him. We went out today and got to see the Christ statue. That was awesome. Katie and the Captain are awesome and very helpful and def go out of there way to make you happy and safe. The boat itself is actually not the correct type of boat for scuba diving as it sits very high on the water, which means that when you go to get in or out there's a significant drop and distance between you and the water. I found it very difficult to get out of the water with all my gear on and the crew, despite my polite (and desperate) pleas, wouldn't come down the ladder to help me. As a result, I was slammed against the boat three times and still have bruises on my left leg two weeks after my trip. I ordered and paid for all gear (including wet suit, regulator, etc.) for a trip to Molasses reef. The crew member who assembled the equipment forgot my wetsuit and when I mentioned it he muttered and swore at me under his breath, and did nothing. As luck would have it, another diver on the boat was listening and had been before with Horizon and knew that they had spare gear aboard. Wetsuit problem was solved by a customer. Lack of safety was the most alarming thing on board with Horizon. Nobody checked our gear before we went into the water, and when I recognized a blockage with the air in my tank (which meant I could not inhale deeply - pretty major right?!!) they were dismissive. I battled with small breaths for my first dive because I really wanted to go out, but I'd never do that again. It was simply unsafe. There was also no safety discussion in the briefing (the briefing focused on you-break-it you-bought-it, if you're not back in 1hr we'll leave without you, etc), so I was not aware of things to avoid. When I accidentally got a little too close to some coral, it stung and hurt like crazy. Another diver told me it was fire coral and the crew did nothing. A concerned diver told me I needed treatment and pushed the crew to bring out the first aid kit which contained a spray. The diver then applied the spray to my leg, which by that stage had become red and inflamed. I've dived in Thailand, Bahamas, Malaysia, The Great Barrier Reef (awesome if you ever get a chance), Mexico and now the Keys. I've never had any complaints with any of the dive crews I've gone out with as they've always gone out of their way to make every dive safe, fun and comfortable. Unfortunately, Horizon only seems to care about the fact that you paid. There's no passion for the reef like you find with most dive operators and the lack of safety was alarming. I just had another wonderful time with Horizon Divers! What a wonderful place to dive with; what a great operation. The staff is great and very helpful, whether you are a professional diver or a new diver! I come as often as possible, bringing students from the cold winters of Michigan to enjoy the great reefs. Also, I do advanced diving here as well with great dives on the Spiegel Grove, Duane and Bib. I stayed at their lodge which is right at the shop; it is roomy, clean and all the comfort and features of home. I just stayed there and would do again! Stop in and say hello to the owner Dan or the manager Jeff. They are both great guys, outstanding instructors and run one of the best operations I have ever been! I recently completed three PADI courses with Horizon, and overall the experience was excellent. Dianne Poliakoff taught our Advanced Open Water, and she was exceptional- very professional with excellent communication skills both in the classroom and underwater. Her dive plans were clear and straight forward and she adhered to them underwater, ensuring we were always clear regarding what we were doing and why. She was also able to adapt the course to our ability level, spending more time in area where we needed extra practice and less in skills we quickly grasped. Her attitude was enthusiastic, positive, and professional- I highly recommend her as an instructor for any level of recreational diving. Dianne and Hugh taught our Rescue Diver and Emergency Responder courses, both of which were professional and thorough. Again- very well done. The boat crew was also extremely enthusiastic and helpful, and their pre-departure and pre-dive briefings were thorough. Other reviewers have noted feeling rushed pre-dive, and I can understand that concern. However, I noted that there were a significant number of tec divers and other very experienced divers on the boat who knew the dive spots well, and realized that the crew has to strike a balance in communication with extreme ends of client dive experience on the boat. I found that the Horizon boat staff was extremely helpful assisting newer divers when you identify yourself as such and ask for their help. I would encourage the boat crew, specifically, the designated captain to be a little more assertive in dealing with problem divers- those we violate dive safety rules or are disrespectful of the reef environment. Again, overall, an excellent diving experience with Dianne and Hugh and the Horizon boat crew. read more

My son and I went down to Key Largo to finish up out Open Water certification and these guys were awesome. Friendly doesn't begin to describe it. From the moment that I spoke with Kara to when we hit the water with Hugh and the boat crews that took us out to the sites, everyone was awesome. These guys were great. I've had two experiences with them. First experience was chartering them to do some trimix diving to about 260'. They were accommodating, worked overnight to mix our blends, and had no trouble finding any of the sites we wanted. Awesome. This was on their smaller boat. I'd look elsewhere. The shop has hidden fees that they charge you at checkout without prior notice. As for the diving, they drop you far from the reef leaving you to guess where it is and in the meantime burn a lot of air looking around for and getting to it. In addition, many of their "secret" dive sites are pretty baron and dead reefs. That makes for boring diving without much to see. Horseshoe reef was the lone nice dive. Beginners should be wary too. My girlfriend did her open water dives here and the instructor underweighted her so she kept popping up and kept fighting floating up. He also stayed too far away and didn't pay as much attention as he should have to somebody doing their first dive. The boats are ok, but the tank spacing it really cramped so you have little room to swap your BCD to a new tank. No snacks or fruit is provided in between dives either. Out of about 270 dives, these 7 dives with Horizon Divers have been my least enjoyable. Disappointing experience. read more

Dove twice on the Duane off of the Pisces boat (I can't remember the captain's name but he was fantastic!). This was my favorite dive of the week in the Keys. Horizon gets 5 stars for a couple of reasons: 1. We booked our trip about a week in advance to go on the Duane and the day before we were supposed to go out they called us and let us know that the dive didn't have enough people signed up to go but that they were still trying to put something together so that we could go. We really appreciated them letting us know in advance and also continuing to try to get the trip together. 2. They found two people last minute so that the trip would make and called us immediately to let us know. 3. There were only four of us on the boat plus the captain and the guide (whose name I also can't remember; he was also fantastic) for the other two divers. This made for a really relaxed dive as we were also the only boat out there and had the wreck all to ourselves. 4. I somehow managed to lose one of my fins while I was down on the wreck during our first dive and during our surface interval the captain boated around in the direction of the current to see if we could find my fin. We found it! The boat we were on didn't have some of the amenities found on larger dive charters, but we loved being out with a smaller group of people and the company on the boat was superb. The dive itself was fantastic; we saw the largest sea turtle anyone on our boat had ever seen and two large bull sharks and tons of other marine life. read more

Highly recommend diving with Horizon if you are in Key Largo! We went out on the Pieces with Captain Jessica and Rich. Everyone, including the staff at the shop, were very friendly. We planned to meet up with Tyler Mahler and Doug Conner to dive the Spiegel. Both have dove the Spiegel a few hundred times and know the highlights of the wreck. The first dive we checked out the wreck on our own followed by Tyler leading the second dive. He went through a thorough pre dive brief and the plan was followed during the dive. We always felt safe and had a great time. So if you are in Key Largo, book with Horizon! read more

We have been everywhere and this was the first company who does not provide a dive master as a guide unless you ask for it up front. The website lists the price for a guide but I assumed that was for a private guide as I have never been on one without a guide. Also, luckily I had my own gear. My boyfriend rented their gear and the regulator fell apart under water. He was sucking in seawater. Luckily we are experienced divers and were able to recover from that. I shudder to think if that happened to an unguided new diver. When we pointed it out, their attitude was "Huh... Weird... I don't know why that happened..." I know I'm in the minority here so if you go with them, ask for a guide. read more
