I've dove a lot and rarely need a guide even at new sites (I've found most guides in the past go too fast, are not that great and I don't enjoy diving in a group bigger than 4 people - basically I just have a better dive when it's me and my buddy). Given I was a solo diver on this trip I had no choice but to use the complimentary dive guides rainbow reef includes on their boats (nice perk as most boats charge 120$ to be guided). I lucked out huge and was placed in Jacks group! I've dove w RR in the past and most guides are good but I still had a better dive not being guided, that said I wasn't super excited to have a guide but Jack changed all that. His pre dive plan/talk was actually informative and valuable -what I had been use to when diving with liveaboard groups like all star. I feel most RR guides that I've had in the past don't really cover much and also go waaaay too fast/actually scare off most of the marine life. Jack changed all this! He was patient and taught a few people good dive etiquette with our group (so often as a five professional I want to help another guest but it's not my place and I'm always shocked the dm/instructor rarely address basic dive etiquette like/ "if I see something cool I'll point it out w my flashlight w a big circle then I'll move out of the way slowly, then each person in the group slowly come up and look and then move on so the next person can see it- if we do a good job of being slow and not making sudden movements the marine life will hang out so that everyone can get a chance to we some really cool stuff" I LOVED THAT JACK TOOK THE TIME TO EXPLAIN THIS to the rest of the divers who even though they'd been diving a little bit all seemed excited to be taught this - "oh that's a good idea" "I never thought about it like that" were many of the discussions I overheard later!!!!!!!!!! He also reminded them not to bang their tanks or use shakers as an aware diver will look at you within a minute or 2 so just wait if you see something cool rather than scare it off with a bunch of loud noise. Most divers need to be reminded of this type of dive etiquette so that everyone can see cool stuff without being on top of each other/scaring off marine life. I was paired with Jack for a Thursday night dive and saw some of the most unbelievable stuff even though I had done tht same dive over 6 times in the past month. It was such a great experience that when I found out he was working the next day too, I canceled my speigal dive to do shallow dives instead with Jack! Jack is really that good! I will be asking about his work schedule and try to dive with him or Bridgette (also fabulous) on my next trips with Rainbow Reef! Thank you again Jack! You're the best! read more

We had an excellent experience with Key Largo Dive Center. We went out with captain Larry for mini lobster season 2020. The boat is intimate with only six passengers/divers on at a time. We absolutely loved this. Other dive shops in the area will pack 30 or so divers on a boat and you feel like you're just lost amongst the crowd. The crew was very friendly and made it a point to talk to us and get to know us personally. The other divers on the boat were also very friendly. The six person limit makes fir a really great friendly and intimate dive. We would not hesitate to dive with them again and recommend them! read more

We did a pool refresher course and went out on two dives with KLDC in early November and would highly recommend them! Our first point of contact was with Amber via email at the shop who quickly responded to our inquiries. She was able to schedule us for our refresher courses the following day and also assisted us with faulty second stage regulator replacements, which saved the rest of our dives. We also had the pleasure of meeting and diving with guide Max who was informative, personable, and really went out of his way to ensure that we all had a great experience. We chose to dive here cause they said on the telephone they allow lion fish hunting as long as it wasn't on the protected reef. Also this place was very competitive in price (aka they beat everyone else's prices). Our dive was scheduled for a morning dive but we had to change the dive to the next day due to bad weather. We were called the day before and told by the dive shop that they were changing the dive to a deep wreck dive and then a reef dive. No problem we r both Advanced open water divers and we told the dive shop that. The dive shop told us they would see us tomorrow. When we went to check in we found out that since we hadn't done a deep dive in over a year and a half that we needed to have a guide go with us ($30 more per person). Then we were told that we had to use nitrox because the rest of the group was using nitrox ($14 charge). Lastly they said we now had to rent a dive computer for the nitrox ($10 charge). I had my own dive computer but it happened to have a dead battery (my fault). The dive operation was run very professionally and safely. I just through the extra charges ($54 per person) were kind of bs especially since they were not explained over the phone after the dive shop called and told us they were changing the dive. We weren't able to go lion fish hunting which I understand cause we were on the protected reef. I would dive here again, I just would make sure to tell future travelers to ask more specific questions about pricing when on the phone. The dive staff was great! read more

After contacting several Kay Largo dive charters we decided to chartered a two tank afternoon dive here and was not disappointed. They had no problem with there being just 3 certified divers and two of us just snorkeling. The guys at the shop where extremely helpful with getting all our rental gear situated. It took about 40 minutes and we where all fitted and ready to meet the captain down at the dock. The captain and dive master were vary friendly and helped us load all our gear onto the boat. After getting the rundown of the boat and discussing our dive options we decided on Molasses Reef. We had a great dive. The dive master new the spot vary well and new where all the interesting finds where. We dove several spots in Islamorada that week but Molasses was our favorite. Definitely gonna use these guys again next year. read more

We called Key Largo Dive Center on our way to the Keys hoping the would be able to get us in so close to Spring break. Fortunately for us they had an open slot. Our dive master Max was awesome. Larry the captain did an excellent job getting us out and back in comfort. These guys are very professional and fun to be around. Would highly recommend them. My suggestion don't trust their online reservations. Very poor online reservation experience. Reserved a dive three weeks prior to diving on their Website which required my credit card. Called the dive shop the day before my dive and was told they weren't diving the next day because they didn't get enough divers. How I understand there is a minimum number of divers to send out a boat. The dive shop never even called to inform me there could have been a shortage of divers. When I called to confirm Amber couldn't find my reservation. After searching she found finally it. Amber did apologize for the mishap and sent me an email assuring me my credit card was not going to be charged. However, disappointed with the organization here. These guys did a great job. Professional, helpful, courteous. I was the third diver and didn't have a partner that day, which was totally cool because they had a dive guide - free of charge. They also had snacks available - free of charge - which was fantastic because I forgot mine. Great boat, great staff. Not your typical six pack, that is well, umm, a little cozy. Lots of room to move around. Two great dives off Molasses Reef for me. It was my first dive with them, and as a local to the area I have been to more than a couple dive joints. These guys were great! Also, if you mention you are in the military or that you work in public safety (Fire, LEO, EMS) they will give you 10% off. They don't ask - you have to ask them (not sure why, exactly). This is my 2nd time hiring their services! These people are extremely helpful! They would take their shirts off their back to lend a helping hand! My friend and I have rented equipment from this local dive shop twice and they never seize to amaze me! They are extremely knowledgeable and the owner has done a great job taking care of his fellow employees since they speak so highly of him! The guy at the front desk advised us on how to get to the dive sites on our own boat and to look for a certain buoy within the dive site for some extra surprises! like eel caves, tarpon, etc...! We had a fantastic time diving with Key Largo Dive Center. This was our first family dive since our kids (ages 11 & 14) got their open water certification. We did four dives to Molasses Reef, Winch Hole, the Benwood, and French Reef. All were beautiful and neat to see! In addition, shop owner, Larry, was a wealth of information and took extra time to help my husband with his new dive computer. Divemasters, Max and Terry, and Captain George were awesome with our kids. They helped us feel comfortable, work out minor equipment issues, and were so complimentary of our girls' first "real" dives. I've wanted to learn to scuba dive since I was about 7. I'm in my early 40s now and finally had the chance on a trip to Key Largo. I started picking the shop I would train with by reading reviews from a number of sources. Once narrowed down to my top 5, I sent emails to the shops with some question regarding dates and a few things I wanted to clarify. Steve at Key Largo Dive Center was the first and only person to respond within 24 hours. He was also very prompt on a few follow up emails. I completed the online portion of my training, and once I was in Key Largo, made contact with the shop and worked out details on times for my pool and open water sessions. My instructor was Rick Murphy, aka Murphy, and later I was to learn also aka "The Black Manta". I was nervous, but right away Murphy put me at ease. He is authentic and down to earth, and a natural born teacher. He's friendly and personable at heart, but he knows how to get your attention and hold it. I can't recommend Murphy highly enough. The shop has plenty of items for sale, but they're not a huge retailer. Instead, they're focused on Scuba and they know how to do it right. The staff went out of their way to make sure my training was not only excellent but fun. We finished my open water dives at Molasses reef, and it was as incredible and beautiful as if always imagined. On top of everything? Their prices are among the most competitive of any in Key Largo. If you're training or just looking for a dive trip, you need to give them your first shot. read more

My 10 year old son just got certified and he had the best time ever! Our dive master "Eli" was excellent! He was very patient and explained everything clearly. I love that they only take 6 divers Maximum so it was a very personalized experience. There were 2 other divers the first day and today we were the only ones. I can't recommend KLDC enough. I did my first open water dive with Buddha and he is a great instructor with passion for his job. I recently did my second open water dive day in Honolulu and found myself wishing I had Buddha. At KLDC safety was paramount we briefed every maneuver beforehand and also discussed what psi we were comfortable with before surfacing. I'm realizing now not every place is like this and I feel as though I should highlight how good KLDC operates. I realize I'm comparing two different dive operations 5,000 miles apart, but just want to point out not all dive operations are the same quality. Had I not had such a great experience at KLDC I probably would have quit diving after this Honolulu experience. Anyways I did get signed off and look forward to diving with my buddies in Key Largo again. read more

I have been diving for 17 years. In the past I have always used a competior when diving in Key Largo but I decided to give these guys a try and I am glad I did. My son and I booked a two tank lobster dive for mini-season and I can assure you we will dive with them again. They showed a commitment to what I believe are the two most important aspects of a dive boat, safety and service. From the time I inquired about booking a dive to getting off the boat with my catch at the end they were friendly and responsive and made me feel like an appreciated customer rather than a head of cattle. My husband and I were in the Keys for a dive trip and I booked us on a 2-tank dive with KLDC over Labor Day weekend. They offer a free dive guide which is an incredible perk. The reefs are huge and there are a ton of other divers down there so it's easy to lose your boat (again, another reason the guide was a HUGE perk...we didn't lose our boat). The guide and the captain were friendly and helpful, and the prices were great. They only take a max of 6 divers which made for a personalized experience. I had us scheduled to dive with 3 different charters at 3 different locations (Islamorada, Key Largo, & Marathon). After our experience with Key Largo Dive Center, I canceled our other reservation and signed up with them for our 3rd dive day. This was our first time diving in Key Largo. But the one thing we didn't want was to be carted off to a reef, dunked under water with 30 other divers and brought back with a bad memory. This company was all about creating a personable one on one relationship. They only allowed 6 people on board and we only had 3. Me and my 2 sons. So it could not have been better. This is how a Dive charter should be. You would expect to pay a lot more for this type or adventure. But the cost was as good as anywhere else. A pure joy to have all the space needed to make my dives comfortable and not be packed in like sardines, like you are in other dive shops/boats. CAPTAIN BOB: I have dove all over the world. I have never seen a Captain this "hands on" with us, divers! He was fun, informative and interacted with every diver on board! Usually, Captains, stay and prefer to be separate from divers. Captain Bob ensured all my needs were met and saw him spend time with each and every diver. BONUS: There is a Divemaster/Guide on every dive - you do not pay extra! And the Divemaster/Guide takes photos of...YOU! No longer do you have to worry about getting photos of yourself if you dive alone, or don't trust your dive buddy, lol! We just finished our 3rd 2 tank morning dive. It was fantastic. I wish I could give them more stars. We haven't been diving in 3 years and this was the perfect dive company to get back in with. SIX people on a boat. A dive master goes with you. Some companies have 24 on a boat and you pay extra for a dive master. Steve was an amazing Captain and Rick was a great guide. Our last day we went out with Joe and he was so patient. They really look for unusual things to show you, lobster, crab, eels, Rays and conchs in their shells. We saw little tiny crabs that looked like daddy long leg spiders. If you request they will take you where you want to go. For nice dives, not too deep; molasses reef, Benwood wreck, snapper ledge and pickles wreck. Give this dive shop a try. I really think you will be pleased. read more

Had a terrible experience. I have been diving for 12 years in Caribbean, Italy, SE Asia and never had an experience like this before. I had not been able to dive for 2 years, which I told the shop, and needed a refresher. I was rented broken gear and could not complete the dive and was not given a full refund. The only good thing I can say is that the boat captain John was very friendly and the small size, which is related to how much business they can get anyway, which was little as I called the day of and was told that they could "squeeze me in" but there were only two divers, myself and another. The dive guide mike, was on his cell phone texting. Both myself and the other diver rented gear. He did not help with our gear. We were also expected to move our gear in our own vehicles to the marina, which made for soaking wet gear in our cars. When we arrived to the marina he did not offer to help us unload, again on his phone, and did not offer to help us onto the boat. The boat was not attached to the dock and required a jump, which was hard with all the gear as I was not used to this. They provided us water. Mike did not do safety checks of our gear. He also did not want to help us assemble our gear. This was hard for the other dive who is newly certified and had not made more than ten dives. Mike tried to overweight us, he asked how much weight i usually dive with and said I could use more weight. I had a hard time with my buoyancy during the dive because of the overweight he insisted upon. He did not do a dive briefing. We did not know the name of our site or see a dive map or know about the depth of our dive and the time. There were no fish id cards. He did not talk to us about marine life safety and potential dangers such as fire coral or the lionfish. Mike lost his dive watch and also forgot to turn on his own air, asking the captain to turn it on for him. When we got into the water I found that my regulator was leaking and my mask was not sealed. I said to mike that I think there was something wrong with the air and my mask and he said it was fine. I went on the dive trusting the instructor. As I was equalizing in descent Mike pulled me down, the following day I had pain in my ears. The entire dive I had to clear my mask of water and the dive was cut short because of losing air. When we surfaced mike told me that I should bring my own mask if I am going to be a diver. I do have my own mask, but was not able to bring my gear on this trip. Regardless, this should not excuse faulty rental equipment. Mike had a spare regulator and switched that out for the second dive. He did not discuss this with me and acted like there was not a problem. In fact, he had my change over my gear to the second tank first and then changed out the regulator thinking I would not notice. Mike tried to have me switch my mask with the other diver as he had no extra masks on board. As she started the second dive she found too, that she could not dive with a mask that was leaking. I opted out of the second dive. The second diver had already descended and Mike said to me, where did she go? He did not realize she had went down and had lost her. On board were four snorkelers were were getting seasick, who Mike did not check in or offer any first aid. After Mike finished the second dive he said he was sorry. I said it was fine but I should expect a refund, he said that it was not up to him and proceeded to pack up and leave. As we had to bring our own gear back and drive ourselves,I went to the shop. Dorsey greeted me saying he heard I did not have a good time and that they usually don't give refunds but he would argue on my behalf. He was able to get half but he said he had closed the computers and it would be a hassle to open them up to refund me if I could come back tomorrow. In the morning the following day he called me and told me that I would be refunded less. I reminded him of the rate he had told me the day before and he retorted that that was before taxes. Minutes later he called and said the original agreed upon amount, without apology about his mistake. Then they tried to get me come and dive with them the next day and offered me a job working there as a dive master. I said I do not have dive master certification and they said that would be okay. I would never work for a place who did not value their customers. I understand that equipment can break, however, I believe it is important to value your customers and treat us as humans and not piggy banks. read more
