I have always enjoyed Hop Jack's and this is not a complete condemnation of this restaurant. Rather, I went in for their lunch special as I often do and ordered their Half Sandwich & Soup which is always delicious and only $10.25, a great value. Where they lost me was the unsweetened iced tea, 16oz which was 3/4 ice.....for $3.29 + tax. We all know that this is ridiculous that flavored water cost 1/3 of the cost of the meal. Obviously this is intentional and is a price gouge and disappointing. I dont mind paying whatever but I hate being taken advantage of. It's not being petty, it's being heard. I'll be more careful what I order at this place if and when I go back and feel like being ripped off. read more

I like the really cold taps at the bar. Ice covered risers keep the beer cold. Nice. Cold glasses too. I ordered "The best onion soup you will ever have". I would say it was the worst onion soup I have ever had. Broth had nice flavor but that was it. The bread was in dense chunks that did not come apart when cut with spoon. Little taste. The onion had pieces of skin that was hard. Spat those out. The cheese was in one thick chunk that was hard to split. Left most of the bread. Good onion soup should have pieces of bread dispersed between the cheese. The bread should soak up the broth and fall apart when cut with the spoon. The cheese should be easy to come out in small pieces. No onion skin please. read more

Been here a half dozen times now. It is usually about a three and a half star, but this time they are lucky to get two. My grandmother wanted to go someplace different for lunch on her 96th birthday so we decided to give it a go for lunch. Service was prompt and we were seated in the bar. I let the host and the bartender know that we were her for her 96th birthday, more on that at the end. Grandma ordered the fish tacos, they were really the highlight of the lunch. There were three of them, all really large which was fun to see the reaction from here. They were 4 out of 5 good. I ordered the bacon cheese burger, not so great. I think they ran out of seasoning in the kitchen. The female bartender server was kind of off, can't really describe it, maybe arrogant is the correct description. My real disappointment is that they didn't offer a little scoop of ice cream, cookie, soda, coffee or anything for someone on their birthday. Doubt i'll be back. Been here a few times with my other half. We've had one not so good experience, but it's balanced out by all the other times we've visited. The one time we came that was not so great was an extremely busy time for Hop Jacks. The restaurant and bar were both jam-packed, and we barely managed to find a table in the bar. Food was still great, but it was difficult to get a server, bartender, or anyone else to help us. Understandable, considering how busy it was that day. But...on to the good, which does include their food. Their boneless buffalo "wings" are so delicious. They always come to the table hot and sizzling on their cast iron plate, and are the perfect level of spicy heat and buffalo goodness. No dipping sauce needed, really, although their ranch dressing is awesome too. I had the garlic fries once with these also, and those were amazing! I first had garlic fries at a Seahawks game and was a little disappointed (those were a little cold, soggy), but Hop Jacks garlic fries were exactly the way I'd imagined garlic fries should be - hot, crisp, fragrant with tiny crescents of garlic, soooooo yummy! When the restaurant isn't packed, service is very good. My other half and I went there during a very bad day after New Years, and were treated like royalty. Our server (wish I had gotten her name) noticed we were down and did everything she could to make our afternoon better. It is nice to know that the staff there truly does care about their customers. Prices are about average for this type of restaurant, maybe a little higher, but to me, the food is worth it. Poor service, rude bar and restaurant staff (zero empathy), food was ok. Targeted me for not having ID in the bar and also refused to serve me in the dining room. Server used the excuse that it's their policy to card ALL restaurant patrons, no matter age. While we were there I didn't see one other table (bar or restaurant) asked for ID. I am aware I should have had ID, it was a wallet switch oversight, but I'm 40. As someone who has worked in hospitality, I know ID is asked for when a server thinks a patron looks young, but is not required to have to drink. I'm super flattered they felt the need to make an example out of me, but this was ridiculous. If it's actually your house policy, everyone should have to follow the same rules, I felt unfairly targeted. I am clearly of age. Really good place to drop by for some food or a few ice cold beers. They have this delicious French Onion soup that you cannot pass on. I ate times end up eating 2 of them in one sitting. The staff is friendly and always have a few jokes to toss around. I like that it's something we have in Maple Valley because the neighborhood apple bees just can't cut it. Defiantly look at their mixed drinks. Happy hour is even more delicious when you see the prices. read more

But what bugged me was that the server forgot a lot of our order and was kinda lazy about what we needed. Really, really wanted to like this place more.. I live in a "restaurant vacuum" (we moved here a couple months ago)-- to our dismay, not many dining choices nearby at all! First, noticed the King County Food Safety rating on the door--an "Okay"??? Really? Not a Very Good or Good--kind of concerned me. Place was warm, inviting, clean, nice decor. Got really good service from our waitress. Menu had great choices, hard to decide. I had a french dip, and friend had some salad.. both good, both happy with our choices. but portions seems a little bit skimpy to me. Soooo based upon the name for some reason I thought this was a cross between IHOP and flapjacks and was assuming it was like a breakfast place. Anyways, it's definitely not that. We ate here Saturday night. The waitress and hostess were super friendly and very helpful. They weren't super busy. My husband had one of the octoberfest brats with cream cheese (forgot what it was called exactly) and I had tempura zucchini and a chipotle chicken ranch flatbread. EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS. I didn't just lose the ingredient you flubbed - that "ingredient Z" you screwed up caused the dish to suck; the dish caused the meal to suck; the meal caused my time to suck and for one or more people to not get their food. MAKING IT RIGHT: You refund the meal when critical pieces are failures AND you give me a credit for next time AND you really seem to CARE YOU GOT IT WRONG. ADVICE: It seems some people will do a crappy job at any rate of pay. Some people, like me, can't be happy doing a crappy job and just want to get what they give. So fire every person with a "who cares?" attitude, only employ people who can't stand being lazy, sloppy and inept (clue: ADULTS WHO NEED TO PAY RENT) and pay every employee equally, a wage that will provide for them and their family. Equally? Yes, if an employee is not needed you should not employ them. If they are needed, they are as vital as anyone else. Idk my servers name but he was awesome. He gave us a break down if the food & menu items and was super friendly and seemed enthusiastic about his job. I had a margarita and my boyfriend had a lemon aid. Our drinks came in a timely order and tasted great. I ordered the rib tips and fries and my boyfriend ordered the bacon burger. I've never seen my boyfriend finish a whole burger in one sitting while out to eat. I loved my rib tips. They tasted great but the fries were the best part of my meal. We came recently to watch our Hawks play and had a great experience. Wish I could remember our server's name but it's been a few weeks, sorry! :( Found out that it's always Happy Hour when the game is on and we also ordered food. Healthy? No, but that's not what we came for. I LOVE the fried pickles with ranch and my boyfriend loves the macaroni and cheese. We tried the Legion Of Boom Tea (delicious, STRONG) and Dynasty Drops (Amazing!!)... Also we had the limited time Corn Dog Nachos; I want sure about them but they wound up being delightful, I would recommend! Our server was great from beginning to end! He made the experience fun, had great drink reccomendations, and was perfectly attentive without being over bearing at all! We're regulars for the weekend breakfast at Hops n Drops. We're early risers and usually get there just after 8 a.m. We're surprised they aren't overwhelmed with customers in the morning, because their breakfast is really good. They have the best hollandaise sauce west of Las Vegas -- perfectly balanced with just a touch of lemon. It's the real deal made from scratch. The quantity of food is generous, so we often split an order. It arrives at our table on two separate plates, which we appreciate. The whole staff here in Maple Valley is always in a good mood. She recommended different drinks and ended up with Dru Bru which was pretty good IPA. Went for breakfast today. Ms. Vickie helped us she was so nice and explained everything. It's like she loves what she does if it's just an act she is up for an Emmy. Had eggs Benedict with their signature smashed potatoes good was fresh and did not taste it of the box what so ever. Also had the fresh made donuts which Ms. Vickie offered a little chocolate sauce you don't them in adding to her awesomeness. These donuts were amazing warm and delicious. I come here all the time with very large groups of my friends. We typically sit outside because we are highschool seniors and are loud. The outdoor seating is nice warm and enclosed. They have bottomless teas or lemonade that come in many different flavors, all of which are good and don't taste watered down. I didn't want to like this place. Covington and MV are full of these gimmicky chains. Do we really need another restaurant in the same vein as Red Robin or Applebees? To top it off, after living/working in Seattle for several years I've built up quite a snobby disdain for these types of suburbia hangouts. So I must admit I am rather shocked to be writing a 5 star review. But really, this is a fantastic and reliable restaurant staple in the Maple Valley area. The food is quite delicious for the most part, and they have a great selection of cold beers on tap. It's the kind of place that's comfortable to visit regularly. In fact after going at least once a week for the past 6 months, we've made friends with quite a few of the waitstaff. Which brings me to my next point. Other reviewers have mentioned that the service is terrible. Maybe our friendship with the waitstaff is what makes the difference, but every time we have been there we have been treated very well. My girlfriend usually gets the bottomless lemonades and never has a problem getting her glass refilled. Occasionally they can be a bit slow during peak hours, but truthfully they handle the high-volume better than most similar restaurants. As much as this place is perfect for me, I do admit it has a few flaws which might be a turn off to others. For one, the mixed drinks are terrible. Really the only good alcohol they serve here is the beer. I'm tempted to nix a star for that, but having lived in MV for 15 years, this place has made me happier than any other restaurant to grace our area in that time. So we called here to see if they have a wait time and said they had 1 available and if we walked in it was ours. They held our table and sat us down right away. Kimberly is our server and she has been the best so far and has made the experience a reason to come back. My daughter spilled her chocolate milk and before the busboy could finish cleaning it up Kimberly already had a replacement with double lids to prevent spilling again. If you like greasy pressed burgers that by the second bite turn into burger salads, this is the place for you! This place gets very busy on the weekends. TINY waiting area, barely any chairs, constantly having to move out of the way for people to enter/exit restaurant, or to use the restrooms. Large bar, and an outdoor patio area. 3 tables, the rest are all booths. The hosts are friendly and attentive - watched them go help the bussers get tables cleaned multiple times. Our server was frantically running around - it was very busy, and she was working her butt off. She was very nice and friendly - very helpful about menu questions as well. We don't drink alcohol, but the drinks looked very popular as most tables had a few. We both ordered burgers with fries. I got the Deluxe Burger, with the sauce on the side. By itself, like dipping fries in it, the sauce is good. On the burger, not so much. Got a side of BBQ that I added on the burger, much better. I love burgers, so very much. But literally two bites in, I couldn't even pick it up the meat was falling apart so much. The buns were completely soggy from grease too. It basically wasn't even a burger - I attempted to eat the rest with a fork, but anytime I'd try to pick the meat up it would fall apart even more. So I gave up - didn't even eat half. I think my boyfriend got the Morning Burger, and his was the same: falling apart, and super soggy bun. The fries were also extremely greasy. Would like to come back as they had some other items on the menu that intrigued me, but definitely will not be getting any more burgers from here. read more

Very average food, with a premium price tag. Essentially this is an overpriced burger joint with a few "gourmet" items to justify the $14 burgers. I went at happy hour and wanted to order a well drink, priced on the table happy hour menu at $3.00, which seemed reasonable. When the waiter came, I said I would have that and he said "oh, that's the old menu, not sure why it's on the table." He then proceeded to bring me the new menu with everything more expensive on it. If Hop Jacks gave a flip about customer service, a good experience, a strong brand identity, and a desire for return business, it would have honored the price stated on the menu on the table when I arrived. It isn't so much the price but the principle in how you treat customers and ensure they leave satisfied. That's how you generate repeat business and word-of-mouth referrals instead of complaints on Yelp. Maybe the owners will read this and hopefully learn something, and train their staff better if they intend to make this place last. read more
