I walked in on Sunday with my girlfriend as we always try to hit up all of the local breweries, tap rooms, and brewpubs when we are traveling or visiting towns to support the small craft beer industry because we always enjoy their beers and the environment. Now with that being said, this isn't any of the three. First off, we walked in and up to the bar and asked for a drink menu and the bartender who had zero personality, didn't say hello, how are you, wasn't smiling, and then says hold on let me see if I can serve you. Wait what? Isn't this a craft beer bar? He said there is a christening going on and I don't know if they want anyone else in here. I was like are you serious? A christening in a bar and with nothing on the door or anywhere saying the bar is closed for a party. Gotcha! So some guy walks up to him while he is talking to us and says he doesn't want us in there. Hilarious!!! I hope the owner knows you denied business to actual customers because some local cool guy wanted the whole place to himself to have his kids christening at a local bar so everyone could enjoy their quesadillas(from what I seen walking out). FYI: there was no one sitting at the bar or bar area just about 10-15 people sitting at a couple tables eating and drinking. I'll never return for any reason. read more

Upside: * Friendly servers (x2 for our night) * Very nice atmosphere. Laid back, not as loud as the rest of M-town. * Games! We played Battleship and Connect Four. * Tasty food. Matches the Frog menu. * Nice beer selection - 20 on tap. * Only had summer beers since it's July. Only dark beer was Guinness, oh well. So I tried the mule since they have so many. The one mule I had was fantastic - I forget the name, but it's the Mexican one with the jalapeno. Actually spicier than our calamari! Wonderful drink. Downside: * A bit pricy. But that's Morristown in general. Whatcha gonna do. * 1-star deduction: Rude bartender. I thought beer #10 was smudged so I asked about it and she said it was gone. I then saw a different one in the online menu so I asked the friendly server if the tap was replaced. The rude bartender turned around and snapped "I told you it's tapped. It's done. Don't ask." Minus one star for the bartender, but fortunately the rest of the night went great here. If the establishment reads this - please deal with whoever was behind the bar yesterday around 5-6 PM. I would literally turn around and walk back out if I saw her, and I would absolutely stay if she wasn't there. read more

Three stars is probably a little generous. The name says Craft Beer - it's not. The menu says 2 rotating craft beers on tap - last night they were Pacific and Modelo. Really?? They did have Kane Head High on tap, which is pretty prevalent in the area. Service was terrible. Our waiter was pretty clueless, and pretty inattentive. Food was fine. Quesadilla and Burger. Fries were average. It was fine if you can't get into anyplace else - but there are way better options around Morristown. read more

We thought this place was just okay. Hidden in the back of Famished Frog, HOPS is a small, casual bar that is good for groups and an overall casual setting. We have been wanting to try this place because of the promise of all of the beers. We asked about their wine menu (since they have "wine bar" in the menu) but we were highly disappointed by that. Only a few wines and nothing too crazy. So we stayed for the beer. Again, no crazy options. The same beers are offered all around town. Overall, we thought it was okay. Location is a bit confusing. From Washington St., you have to walk through the Famished Frog and make a left past the hostess, go through the glass hallway toward the restrooms, and you are at HOPS! It was a Sunday afternoon so it was fairly quiet when we went. Liked the laid-back, casual vibe. They had comfy couches set up by the tables so I loved that. Beer selection was pretty good. They offered flights (x4). And even labeled each beer which I've never seen before, I am usually stuck memorizing the order or referring to my written list. Wings were decent, but not great. I'd prefer crispier. Their tater tots however were pretty awesome - definitely unique. My friend ordered a shaved rib eye cheese steak and he loved it, couldn't stop commenting on how good it was. Food here is almost an afterthought. You want a proper meal, head next door to the Famished Frog. You want something to accompany your alcohol, tell the bartender your order. For me, this is a place I go to strictly before or after a meal. I'm here to try a new beer. I think this is a good spot for drinks, but I didn't care for the food or service. I met a friend here right when it opened up for the night. I was the first person there and thought it was cool how they had couch seating as well as bar seating. I also really liked all of their decor. The server/bartender seemed less than thrilled to be working and didn't mention anything about the menu or the fact that there was happy hour. She wasn't mean, but she wasn't very friendly either. We also had to go up to the bar (we were sitting at the side tables) and ask her for things anytime we needed something. For food, my friend and I shared the "spicy" calamari which was just calamari drenched in some type of marinara sauce. It ended up just making it soggy. I ordered the short rib tacos and they had a nice flavor, but they were on an uncooked flour tortilla. It would have been nice if they added some crunch by cooking the tortilla first. One of the best craft beer selections in Morristown. They may not have as many taps as other places in town, but at HOPS, it's quality over quantity! Formerly the Side Bar, once a smoking lounge behind the Famished Frog, this hidden gem is one of the most chill craft beer places I've been to. It has morphed into the go-to place for happy hour for my co-workers and I. We don't even have to tell each other where we are going, we just know. The ambiance is laid back and warm, with leather couches, chairs, wood everywhere, and some TV's. The big chalkboard on the wall has all the beers on tap, and the bartenders hand you a paper as you walk in that has all the beers on tap along with information describing the style, tasting notes, and ABV. The bartenders are cool and are able to keep track of your tab by magical memory. They are craft beer knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. The acoustics are good as you can hear your conversation really well even with a good amount of people in the bar. To top it off, the food here is pretty darn good. From what I hear, the food is different than what they offer at the Frog. If you like meat, you must try the chicken fried bacon! What is that you ask? There is no chicken involved, it's just bacon wrapped in batter and fried like chicken and comes with a maple syrup dipping sauce. It is amazingly delicious and not that deadly, in the grand scheme of things. I think you end up eating about 2 slices of bacon if you eat the whole thing. I've also had the honey mustard grilled chicken sandwich, which I thought was fantastic, but I was pretty buzzed at the time. They do update their selection on beermenus.com and they have tap takeovers once in a while, so look out for those. On the weekends they usually have live acoustic music, so watch out for those, too. Overall, this is one of my favorite craft beer places in NJ and I'm glad it's right next to my workplace! read more

Let me tell you that it was a good thing that I was sober when I went into here. The entrance is very well hidden and convoluted that if I was buzzed I would not find this place and if I did I wouldn't be able to get out. It felt like I was in the airport in Heathrow navigating this place. Its basically located inside the Famished Frog and with many twists and turns. The place inside is cozy with some live music in the front. They have a huge list of craft beers up on the wall which you can order or try in a flight of 4 to see which you like. Its not loud and you can easily chill and have a conversation or just watch the sports on TVs which are all around the bar area. The food was ok, nothing spectacular. Beer that I ordered wasn't good at all, perhaps because I wasnt a fan of craft beers and there was nothing else for me order here. 18 taps and $9 flights of 4 beers woot! Easily the best choice for craft beer in Motown right now. Now my favorite bar, low-key knowledgeable bartenders and adult conversation always possible, I'm a new fan. Acoustic live music is a big bonus! Kegs changing constantly of course so YMMV, the flight of the day included Troeg Sunshine Pils, Carton Boat Beer, Lagunitas cappuccino stout and Starr Hill Double Platinum double IPA. Never mind the coors light :) there are many great choices here. A non-flighty pint of Kane IPA was excellent. Hoppy [happy] hour during the week right now is $4 drafts from 5-7pm. You'll see a sign hanging at the street but the entrance is basically hidden within the Famished Frog. Just go down the long hall and thru the inner doors until you see some goofy rotating signs way up high on the wall, up a few steps and you've found Hops. This is a bar & lounge that serves food, the long narrow room has bar stools, high-top tables, a few couches and one spectacular round table for a group. Best spicy toasted pecans ever at the bar, be sure to ask if the bartender doesn't set them out for you. Made in house by the chef, these are *way* spicy and shouldn't be missed. Salty. Sweet. Mmmmm. Rest of the food is 3 star or perhaps a bit less. We tried several of the small plates. Disco fries arrived with generous cheese and gravy ($7) but not quite hot enough so they hit cold & congealed status all too quickly. Pot stickers at 8 for $9 were nice, hot, even a bit crispy, good sauce on the plate too. A little plate of 4 crab & sausage stuffed mushrooms was $9, yummy but that's $2.25 each, ouch. Tater tots were actually little lumpy potato pancakes properly fried to a wonderful dark hue, served with a side of mildly flavored sriracha sour cream, very good, $7. Pepperoni Flatbread is basically a cracker-crust pizza, quite good. Gotta say nice things about Greg our server, he went to some effort to get the boss diet sodas that were properly carbonated & such, not the weak pour that came out the first time, and boy was he quick to refill beers, kudos. Vegetarian rating: 2.5 stars, your options are beer, chips & salsa, fries, the potato lumps, wine, mushroom flatbread, and a portobello & guacamole club sammich. So if you're a veggie craft-beer lover you certainly won't have to drink on an empty stomach lol. Music early was an eclectic 80s selection played medium, not so loud to prevent talking, heard Blues Traveler, Cure, Talking Heads etc. Conversation over the happy craft beer drinkers plus that music was occasionally a challenge, but not bcos of the music being turned up, only bcos of happy people. As we left about 9pm on a Saturday a live band was just setting up, guess this place HOPS (groan) late. One caveat: Lounging on a leather couch is truly great at home but I'm not a fan of eating over low tables from said couch. Sitting at the bar or a high table suits me better. Grumpy old man, right? HOPS is one of my regular bars in the area, they are always hosting tap takeovers and have NJ staples on tap. On weekends there is usually live music and the artists that they bring in are usually very good, they keep me there and ordering more beers. My favorite part of the bar is the chalkboard that clearly lists the current beers on tap, their origin, style, ABV, price and size they're poured. I gave four stars because I am not a fan of the food which I have ordered a variety of their apps and a couple of entrees on different occasions and sometimes this place turns into an oven it feels so warm - dress in layers. read more

Hops Other elite told me that this the best beer flight place in town. Raspberry Hefeweizen, is rusty and fruity. Moovember milk stout is dark and sweet. It is also fresh and very smoky. Cony island mermaid Pilsner, has a fish smell. Brooklyn post road pumpkin, is thick and sticky. It also contains supervising sweet flavor. People from surrounding office often come here after work. This is a chill bar in motown thats great for beer enthusiasts as they have a huge selection of craft beer I dont even really know what that phrase means because beer is beer to me. They usually play live music here on the weekends, it has a very indie vibe, great for catching up w friends, or bringing a date so you can actually hear each other. I really, really, really, really wish that this bar was so much closer to my house! I stopped in for a couple brews and would have stayed a lot longer if I wasn't going to this awesome Yelp event. First off, it's a craft beer bar, so they already got my undivided attention. Plus, it's also a wine bar! ...I know what your thinking, "beer heads and winos??" trust me, it works. This place has to be one of the most chill craft beer bars that I've ever been to. It was a super chill, relaxed environment and the bar tenders were super cool and were definitely beer heads. There was a guy playing chill songs on guitar, which from reading other reviews, is pretty common here. The Happy hour special was awesome!! $4 for ANY craft beer, they might as well be giving the beer away! There was also, a special for fruit infused vodka. Don't be fooled by the name, this is just the back room to the famished frog and if you know anything about the famished frog you know why they chose a different name. We just moved back to the area and were super happy to see a "craft beer and wine bar" downtown. Not the case... Craft beer apparently means coors light. On top of the lackluster choices we were sitting there for only about 10 minutes when a big ass mouse ran under us and around the bar. It wasn't rat sized but definitely well fed. Great place for the avid craft beer lover or someone totally new to craft beer, really welcoming for someone looking to try some new stuff and learn about beer. Do not visit morristown without checking out Hops. It's great for happy hour or a night out. It's intimate and comfy, so it would even work well for a date night. The beer selection is certainly the number one reason to visit, but they also have great wines and creative cocktails. The menu is filled with innovative and tasty food. My favorites are the tater tots, mahi tostadas, and the chicken fried BACON! But, you cannot leave without trying the short rib disco fries. I could eat these by the plate full! I can't conclude without pointing out the attentive and friendly service. I went in with a bunch of girlfriends and as more people arrived the bartender actually came out from behind the bar to bring more chairs over for us. When does that happen?? Came here looking for a quite place to end the night, where we could talk with friends over beers after giving up on the loud clubs. Hours stated they were open until 2am - NOT true, they started closing down at 1am. Just after 1 they announced last call then turned on the lights and started walking around asking people to leave. We weren't about to chug our beers, as we assumed we had enough time to enjoy them. By 1:30 we were told to pick up our beers and we were pushed toward the door and asked to move to the Famished Frog because Hops was closed! read more

Oh this is the place to go. Located right in the middle of everything in Morristown this bar has an amazing selection of craft beers. The waitstaff is very knowledgeable as are the bartenders. Sometimes they will give you a sample of the beer before committing to a whole pint. They have opulent leather chairs and couches that are ideal for long conversations with good friends. They also have great side dishes. I am a big fan of rice believe it or not, and I really did like the rice side dish even as a meal. They did their best to "add" craft beers to their selection. Coors light on tap for the member who can't open their horizon doesn't do it. You have a responsibility if your going to label yourself a gastropub and you should be supporting your small batch brew companies not just with an aluminum bottle cap on the wall. We didn't eat but our neighbors said the food was ok. It was just disappointing that the atmosphere was so commercial and corporate. A beer bar with good selection, quick and friendly bartenders, and a packed but fun atmosphere. My first time at Hops was with a group of girlfriends, and the place definitely delivered the fun we were looking far. The atmosphere is casual with most people dressed in jeans and t-shirts (or dressier shirts for the ladies... we just always look good!). Several chalk boards along the wall offer details of the various craft beers offered - name, flavor profile, type of brew, ABV, etc. Prices are fair enough for the type of place, nothing cheap, but not crazy outrageous either (think $6-8 range, though there are probably happy hour specials at some point). Dustin and Greg are awesome, and will have a quick chat even when crazy busy. Somehow they never seem flustered! Music played through the night, loud enough to feel like a fun bar, but not enough to require screaming into the ear of anyone immediately next to you. There are plenty of tables, comfy couches, and general space to hang out. I'll definitely come back to try out some of the offerings on tap. Unfortunately for the time being I can only speak to the snakebite (Guinness over cider) which was exactly what I wanted. read more

Came here for Trivia Night last Monday night. Kind of a strange entrance, don't think I would have known where to go if one my friend wasn't leading the way. The bar itself is quite large and roomy. A few tables scattered throughout, but most of the smaller ones have stools for seats so after a game of trivia. all of our backs were achey and tired. Pretty large selection of beer on tap so no complaints there. And prices were very reasonable which is nice compared to the usual high prices of JC or NYC. No background music or anything which was kind of strange. The overall trivia format I was not as much of a fan of compared to other trivia nights I've attended. This one seemed kind of fast paced not allowing for much time to discuss or just have a conversation with your friends. read more

Went here to celebrate a friend's birthday--apparently it's a popular place to do so, because three other people were celebrating birthdays on that Friday! The setup is very nice--the bar is in the middle of the room and accessible on all sides. There was never more than a 1-2 minute wait for a drink on a Friday night (8-11pm-ish) and to my surprise, it was affordable. Cocktails and beers were in the $5-6 range. Seating was limited, but if you get there relatively early, you can claim a table for your group. Seats range from enormous chairs to leather couches to beer barrels--nice touch! Street parking is limited, but we used a garage a block off the main road for $4. read more

HOPS is a weekly event for me and my coworkers as we attend trivia night on Mondays. The Happy Hour specials are usually a good deal and the ever-changing beer menu is always fun to order from. I love the atmosphere at this place. Everyone is pretty chill and just there to enjoy and have a good time. The food is also pretty good, with disco fries and tater tots usually on the happy hour menu. The only cons I have about this place are that the waiters and waitresses take a while to come around after 7PM. My friends and I have had a lot of trouble flagging them down to get our check multiple times (although I'll admit the waitstaff tends to be a bit busy because there's only 2-3 for the whole place). Also, on a rainy day the carpet gets kind of gross and makes the place smell a bit like wet dog. Not horrible or deal breaking, but I do with there was a way to get a little more ventilation in on days like that. Overall a solid place to hang out and chill if you are in Morristown! read more

Nestled inside the famished frog, this place took some wandering for me to find. But success! Came here with coworkers for some post work drinks. For a weeknight, the place was comfortably full with a good ambiance. Drinks for HH were decent deals, i stuck with wine which came in around $11/glass...relatively reasonable. The food was eh. Had the disco fried with braised beef (gross), falaffels (dry) and tuna tacos (delish). So in this isolated experience i feel they have definite strengths and weaknesses. This is a good post work spot or even a good starting point for a night out. Id come back here again if it was the location of choice for friends, but i wouldn't venture on my own back here. read more
