Between the incredible food, fantastic drinks, and Jessica's wonderful service, this place was a winner all around! If you're in Austin, Moonshine Grill is definitely worth a stop! The chicken and waffles were a hit-good portioned sized. The chicken was well-seasoned, with a crispy batter (though a few pieces were overcooked), and the waffles had a nice vanilla flavor. We started with the fried green tomatoes. They didn't quite beat the unforgettable ones from The Front Porch Cafe at Dollywood, but they were still tasty and we happily finished them. I ordered the 2-piece dark meat while my cousin got the 2-piece white meat, both with baked beans, slaw, and white bread. The baked beans and slaw were both satisfyingly delicious. When my plate arrived with a thigh and two legs, I thought I had ordered wrong! Our wonderful server, Kamber, explained that the legs were especially small that day, so they have to serve two instead. The chicken was crispy, flavorful, and delicious, and I loved learning they use peanut oil. The fresh, natural quality definitely came through. And placing the white bread underneath the chicken? Brilliant--it soaks up the extra oil! Service was fast, friendly, and efficient even though it was a busy Friday lunch hour. Amber was great about answering our questions and regularly checked up on us. She even introduced us to their homemade Chess pie--a classic rich southern custard dessert pie--which we were too full to try this time, next time for sure. We'll be back, especially since there's another location in San Antonio. Next visit, I'm coming hungry for the fried okra, mac & cheese, and seasoned fries! Just wish they also have corn on the cob and corn bread as other sides options. Southern fried chicken craving: officially satisfied.

My husband and I went to Hoover's yesterday for a lunch date. The food was great, and the service was good. Here's the reason we may not return. After ordering a tea and a water, we decided to share the chicken special, but when we ordered, (we decided to split the special at $12.?? and add on an extra salad for $3.??), the waiter informed us there would be a $2.00 charge for sharing. We have shared once before at Hoover's and ordered an extra side and were not charged an extra fee for sharing. I asked the waiter if we just got an extra plate and divided it ourselves if we would still be charged, he said yes. My husband and I and our two teens often share when we go out to eat at other locations like Chuy's, Threadgill's Hyde Park Grill, and Shady Grove. We do this not only to save a little cash, but to enjoy a variety of foods including dessert. We almost always order dessert or appetizers, in addition to our main course. I think it is very bad business to charge for an extra plate. We will not return unless this is corrected. We ended up ordering two entrees because by the time we would've added a side salad and been charged for an extra plate, it was about the same. (We would've paid for my tea and left, but were on a tight schedule and didn't have time to go to another location for lunch). Needless to say, half my plate went in the trash, because I cannot finish all that food, and feel like doing anything but taking a nap. Please consider changing this policy. P.S. We consistently tip 20%, so please do not explain an extra plate charge as an employee excuse. read more

Man, do I love Hoover's. There aren't too many restaurants in town that serve homemade southern-style cooking. Hoover's is one of the few, and the leader of the pack. Only other place that can compete is Dot's, and I haven't been back there since she moved to the new location after the old one burned down. Everyone I know who's been to Hoover's always compares any local chicken fried steak to the version served at Hoover's. It's the best! Their sides are to die for and the desserts are homemade. There's not much more I need to say about Hoover's. If you love southern cooking, you'll love Hoover's. Coincidentally, I work for Hoover's...but not the restaurant; the online business intelligence service. Whenever I tell someone I work at Hoover's, here's how the dialogue goes: Stranger: "You work at Hoover's? You mean the vacuum cleaner guys?" Me: No Stranger: "Oh, you mean the restaurant?" Me: No...the business intelligence service that's part of Dun & Bradstreet. Stranger: "Who?" It's nice to know a small locally-owned restaurant has more name recognition than the industry-leader for business intelligence that employs more than 400 Austinites. read more

For a place with such a reputation (and absolutely delicious aromas coming from the place) I expected better. I've eaten here twice and both times come away just "meh." First time I got the chicken fried chicken, or as it should be called the "humongous mass of batter with a little bit of chicken inside." Anytime there's a pile of fried junk on the side of the plate the size of my fist isn't a good thing. It was tasty fried junk though but I like my aorta as it is. Next time I tried the pulled pork sandwich, Monday special. It was tasty enough, but the bread was completely sodden with grease from the meat as well as butter and a mountain of pickles and onions. The bun was pretty much falling apart before I even picked it up, I ended up eating most of the sandwich with a fork. And the mashed potato side was so swimming in gravy I was doubting there even were potatoes in the dish. If you're interested in tasty meat that will clog your arteries, go for it, but I don't know about anything else. read more

I will starve myself all week just to eat a plate of whatever at this place. Ahh. The waiter comes, and I say "just bring me whatever. and hurry." I just fly through the plate on the wings of doves. greens. beens. gravies. a little meat. more greens. corn bread. beens. etc. etc. (it goes on like that for about five minutes). I misspell "beans" there to just give a little illustration of what a pure state of "be-ing" I'm in...when I'm eating at HOOVER'S.
