They were good and cold, and Kelsie H kept them coming. Hunger vanished with the Beef Birria Torta made as a Rice Bowl. It was so good, and there was plenty for two of us to share. Hook and Lime is located near the Charles Schwab baseball stadium, off of 14th Street in downtown Omaha. Parking can be found along the street for 1 dollar per hour. It's a trendy style restaurant that offers patio seating and indoor dining. Service was very good throughout the experience. I ordered the Chicken Enchiladas with rice and beans (which comes separate from the entree). The food is more of a Tex-Mex style and there is a minor wait time for your food, especially when the restaurant is crowded. Tried out the Hook and Lime on a Friday night when there were two concerts taking place and a Creighton Baseball game. To say it was crowded was an understatement. Took us about 40 minutes or so to be seated. A good looking menu with a variety of Mexican dishes. Started with the Salsa Trio - Roasted Tomato Salsa, Fresh Verde and a spicy Pineapple Salsa with house chips. Also tried the corn fritters. Both were good and would be recommended. Main entrees consisted of Cod Crisps served with a remoulade sauce, then three of the tortas; El Jefe Torta with Slow Roasted Pork, Guacamole, Jack Cheese, Pickled Peppers, Onion, Salsa Roja, Cilantro, Hermano Torta with Smoked Brisket, Seared Shitake Mushrooms, Onion, Pickled Peppers, Salsa Roja, Jack Cheese and lastly the Tradicional Torta with Chile & Beer Braised Chicken, Black Bean Puree, Jack Cheese, Grape Tomato Pico, Romaine, Pickled Peppers, Onion, Chile-Lime Aioli, Avocado. All were delicious. Dessert was Bread Pudding and Churros. The bread pudding was a orange caramel with whipped cream, unfortunately it was the weakest item we had. The pudding was overly dry and had an odd taste. Churros were tasty. Steve was our waitress and did an outstanding job especially with the number of people there. I've already been back to Hook and Lime a few times since first discovering it just a month or so ago, so I guess you could say it's a YES for me! Especially during their happy hour! Honestly, my favorite item was the chips and salsa trio (I'm a HUGE salsa fan) and I would 100% recommend starting out with that. I've tried a few different types of tacos since first visiting and have enjoyed them all. Of course, I've tried a few types of margaritas as well :) My favorite had to be the coconut-flavored one. The last time I ate here was on my partner's birthday, and the staff was kind enough to gift him a dessert! The space is a bit smaller, so probably not ideal for huge groups on the spot. I have to admit my experience is limited to during the College World Series, when they focus the menu for quick service. That said, they put out delicious tacos, and even with the focused menu you can get a great variety. I had been here twice so far. The wait can be kind of long on a busy day. But the service is usually fast. I had the pineapple mezcal margaritas. It definitely hit the spot. The margaritas here are more tart and strong than sweet. All the tacos had great meat to tortilla ratio and definitely was filling. Overall i would recommend this place for comfort and drinking food. I was very hesitant to try Mexican in Omaha, living in San Diego and traveling to Mexico all the time. But hell I went for it because I love Mexican !! I was with my brand new boss of two days and definitely didn't want to disappoint but the yelp reviews said it was a great place so of course I trusted the reviews. We went here and the menu was a perfect size -not too large or small... and they had tortas which I only had once before in my life and it was delicious when I had it. My boss didn't know what to order so followed my lead of ordering a torta because they looked delicious from yelp photos. This place is worth the stop. From scratch kitchen and bar. Which means the margaritas and Paloma's are the real deal! Yes get yourself a Paloma! The real Mexican drink of choice (go to Mexico as find out). Had the taco trio and the queso. Know going in that this queso is thicker cheese with chorizo and black beans served in a cast iron dish. The tacos were fantastic, the tuna being the best, but the chorizo and potato and brisket tacos tasty. Comes with rice and black beans which were really good. Only my second and paid visit to Hook and Lime. This is not your usual taqueria or taco joint. Definitely upscale and prices to match. The environment: pallet wood, corrugated metal, Edison bulbs and the like make for a relaxed, but still very appealing dining space. The music they played was great: stuff you'd recognize, but nothing too overwhelming and loud. The menu: their choices are not as plentiful as some others around Omaha, but what they do have is EXCELLENT. The options are creative and very pleasing. The good stuff: their food...is so good. We tried four different tacos: the cod, the brisket, the sweet potato and the beer braised chicken. They were each very satisfying. We ended up ordering another round of the cod and the brisket because they were so scrumptious. Each one has a good balance of flavors and none of the options were skimpy by any means. We also tried the friend avocado and it was a great way to start the meal! Service: our waitress did a great job. The food was even better our first time when it wasn't as busy, but it was still great. Kudos to them for handling getting hit with all the fans at once between games! The only slight negative was the hostess.. I tried to say something to her as she was seating us and she just walked off, so that was just odd. Another thing was that the people in line continuously held open BOTH sets of doors while waiting to be seated for lunch... so obviously it got really hot inside (and we went there partially for the AC!) I even asked the people in line behind us to shut one door and all I got were blank stares. This isn't the fault of the restaurant they could definitely communicate to people in line. Plenty of times at other restaurants I've seen the hostess or wait staff kindly ask the people to leave the door shut to leave the AC inside where you want it, and every time they have. I've also seen other restaurants have a sign up by the door to keep it shut. Here the hostess/wait staff didn't do that.. Maybe it's not normally as packed and this was a first for them! We were so excited to come here but we were so let down. Not a very welcoming atmosphere inside, there were 3-4 servers at all times sitting at the bar together rolling silverware and loudly talking about customers / tables which was super off putting. We ordered birria tacos and they were terrible. We were so bummed! They were literally dripping in oil but not even crunchy. It seemed that they dipped the entire tortilla in canola oil and then put them on a griddle that wasn't hot enough, or tried to fry them with oil that wasn't hot enough so we got these soggy oil dripping tacos. They were filled with a little cheese and unseasoned meat. We each ate part of one taco and left the rest. The margaritas were super good though, we loved those! I ordered the Jalapeno Grapefruit Margarita. It was beyond incredible. I'm such a sucker for any kind of jalapeno margarita. It was the perfect amount of spicy with splash of grapefruit. My sister in law ordered the Lavender Lemon Margarita. At first, I didn't know what to think when I read the name but it was also very very good. For dinner, we started off with the trio chips + salsa. They brought those out and told us that they had sold out of the pineapple salsa, so all they had was the green and red. The chips were homemade and hot. They were really good but the salsa was a different story. Neither one of the salsas had much flavor. They definitely needed more salt but that was just a bandaid. For dinner, we all ordered the birria tacos. I was so excited to try these. They sounded incredible. To say I was disappointed is an understatement. First off, they had like little to no cheese. The tortilla wasn't drenched in the sauce or crispy from the grill like the traditional ones usually are. The meat was super bland. We ordered a side of rice ans beans.
