I sought this place out based on the dive bar distinction in a busy, tourist-heavy Waikiki. It's located in a mid-century hotel, so the tiki bar vibe fits in flawlessly with the building. The inside of the bar is pretty tiny, but they have a back area that opens up so you have room to spread out. It took some time to get the bartender's attention, but once we did we were greeted warmly. Since the inside is so small, we had to sit in the back. I would've preferred grabbing a seat at the bar, so we could watch TV, but the wicker furniture in the back was pretty comfy. It's a bit old and dirty, but that's the appeal. I would definitely go back if I was in the area. read more

Love this place. It in the mix but out of the way. Feels local but has a healthy mix of tourists n local. Decent prices and good music. Bar staff was busy but on point. Just wish they were open till four. read more

GET THE PASTRAMI REUBEN!!! To die for! I definitely forgot to take a picture due to how hungry I was but it was DELISH! Kerry & Sam took care of us & they were so friendly! If you are feeling bold I do suggest trying The Mussels From Bussels Beer. The beer is aged in a tequila barrel, & let me tell you, YOU CAN TASTE THE TE-KILLA! The smell of wheat is so invigorating at this bar, it's amazing! There is so much great art around this area as well so definitely take a walk around the block, you will not be disappointed! read more

We LOVED this bar! A little off the beaten path, but the best deals we found our whole trip and the nicest people. We had $2 rolling rocks and 50 cent wings the first time we went. One guy talked us into coming in a couple days later, swearing by their $1 Taco Tuesday. They didn't disappoint! Along with $4 Coronas we had a delicious lunch for under 10 bucks. They have specials all week. If you're in the area, we recommend you give it a shot! read more

The bartender tonight told me I couldn't use the restroom while I was waiting until I got ID. She then ID me and I went in to use the restroom and then proceeded to kick me out and told me she wouldn't serve me. Super rude and won't go back terrible service! read more

I like this bar. I visited here in April 2016 where I met a cute guy and we've been dating ever since. This bar has $5 Jameson drinks! How cheap is that. They have good food specials too. I ordered the wings, they took forever, but they were really good. read more

By far Waikiki's weirdest bar... and I'm not going to elaborate on that because I want to be welcomed back. I will say that you'll want to be drunk, and prepared for the impossible. First off, Scott K. hit it on the nose. Pinned the tail on the donkey, bullseye! Hehe, you get the picture. Here we have the epitome of dive bars. Lots of crazy but super friendly people, great food, and enough women hanging out to make it easy on the eyes. There are two sections to the bar. The original section is a small counter-style bar with a larger back section which features karaoke, pool tables, and darts. The drink prices are very reasonable, especially for Waikiki. Food is also very reasonably priced and pretty good. The owner of the bar owned a chain of Hoagie places in San Francisco that he sold before moving to Hawaii. The hoagie I tried was extremely tasty! Come here if you're looking for a good time to relax and have a drink or 10. They will welcome you with open arms. Well they did for me at least. read more

The Tavern is a second home to me. Everyone is so friendly and quirky and so full of love. The drinks are great, the food is pretty good (make sure you stop by Tuesday nights from 7pm-10pm for $1 tacos), and the staff will crack you up. Seriously, if you're over the nightclub scene, this will be your new favorite bar. Personal problems aside, the Tavern is a great place, evolving and changing into something greater than anyone expected. read more

Tiny, trashy, and without the slightest hint of pretentiousness. The chairs don't match, the glasses don't match, there's only one bathroom that is often occupied, and you probably wouldn't want to see this bar with the lights on. All that said, It's the perfect hole in the wall for having fun, singing your guts out, and still being able to carry on good conversation with your company. The best part of the Tavern is that it doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is. Cheap beer, friendly bartenders, and free karaoke (but do tip your KJ!) where you typically get to sing two songs back to back before moving onto the next person. If there was one complaint, it's that the sound system is pretty old and sometimes hard to hear--the owner repeatedly turns down the volume citing neighbors who threaten to call the police. This often makes it difficult to "get lost in your favorite song," but it's just part of the deal. And many of the songs in the selection book aren't actually available (those discs disappeared along with an old KJ). But there's still a broad enough selection that you should find SOMETHING to sing. Moreover, when you're hungry, owner Byron will make you a fantastic fresh hoagie--the best thing to wash down with your pint of cheap beer. I usually have a great time whenever I head here. Weekends are obviously the busiest, but the place is open for drinks and singing every night. If you're really wanting to sing lots, go on a weeknight when not many others are singing. Otherwise, sidle up to the bar to grab a beer, then head back to Byron's Playroom to listen to singers of all different skill levels while you wait for your name to be called. Everyone seems to be friendly here, and you can really just let down and be yourself. All in all, I've paid way more money and had far less of a good time at other places. Give the Tavern a shot! read more

Do you like well poured drinks at a price that won't want to make you scream at the check when it arrive? Are you the kind of person who enjoys a little music, a little local flavor and doesn't need to be coddled with your coors light? Well friend this is the place for you. Is it the newest place? No. Is it the most upscale joint? No. But that's not what you want friend. You want to go to a bar on this island that understands you're there to pound some brews, chill and not go bankrupt doing it. There are so many negative reviews here about the staff ... why??? The staff is fantastic. If I had to deal with half drunk, entitled tourists, I'd be a lot less awesome than these bar tenders - who are awesome. It's simple - if you're looking for an Applebee's - stay in Nebraska. If you need a great place to hammer a half dozen beers, be left alone to talk to your friends and chill - aloha friend. This place is a Waikiki local's dive bar. Tourists sometimes stumble into this dive bar tucked inside Hawaiian King Condos. The main bar leads into a secondary area with pool table. The bar can be a bit noisy when busy. The drinks are unbelievably low priced. I ordered two Mai Tais and afterwards asked the bartender for a recommended drink. The Mai Tai had a smoky flavor and was slightly sweet. He put together a secret concoction which consisted of rum, coconut, and pineapple. The secret drink uncovered sweet layers of coconut, rum, and pineapple bursting with each sip ! In total I had four drinks that totaled $13.50, (one beer, and three cocktails). It was unbelievable pricing for the Waikiki beach area. I highly recommend this place. read more

It's a nice classic bar in Waikiki. Great vibes, good bourbon, classic tunes, with a nice bonus room equipped with a billiards table. It can hold a group of close friends but not the entire entourage. If your looking for a low key spot to have drinking and cold beer, this is for you. I wouldn't recommend this as a dating spot however. read more

Great divey, local hangout! We were staying at a hotel a couple blocks away and started talking with a couple locals hanging out at that bar. We asked where another great, quiet, locals hangout kinda place is, and they recommended Honolulu Tavern. Said to ask for Buddy, I believe. We walk in. Bar stools full with what felt like locals. Folks that know each other, chillin, having a great time. The kind of atmosphere we like. We walk up to the bar and I said "You must be Buddy." He looked at me like who the H are you. LOL I said (some dude's name here, since I forgot what it was) sent us! Ohhhh! Okay. We grab a couple drinks and relaxed and enjoyed ourselves for a while. Took a tour of the back to check out the pool table. Of course, a restroom visit was necessary at that time as well, so there you go. Will definitely stop in when we go back in 5 years. read more

We were going to be in town for six days and we like looking for local dive bars where we can meet new friends .Honolulu Tavern was a great place to do that. I Purchased a round for the locals and they opened up like A fresh Hawaiian hibiscus flower . myself, my wife and 13 friends crowded into this quaint dive bar and had a great time. Claire our bartender was phenomenal . harder to find a better bartender in town. Prices are great and just two blocks away from all the tourist traps and high drink pricing. A can not miss bar while in Waikiki!!! read more

We started with the prix fixe menu for 8-10 guests and were going to add other items à la carte, but a handful of our group accidentally went to the other Side Street location (make sure your group is all on the same page), so what we ordered ended up being more than enough. We left stuffed and with 5 boxes of food still. Edamame was nice and steamy, and large enough to easily pop the beans out with your mouth. Wish there was a bit more salt though. The farmer's salad had everything going on from citrusy to salty to crispy. Avocado had a little bit of oxidation but the capers, dressing and potato curls provided plenty of reasons to overlook it. The fried rice came in a hefty portion, with sizable pieces of bacon and sausage. The chicken I didn't realize was boneless based on the shape of the deep fry, but it was nice to freely bite into it without worrying about hitting anything with my teeth. Probably a bit too much on fried bits but still good. Pork chops had a better meat to crisp ratio in my opinion, as well as juiciness. They even came with ketchup on the side, which I love as a pairing but don't see much of at restaurants. My favorite meat item was definitely the sizzling boneless kalbi. The presentation on the sizzling plate with a side of kimchi was spectacular, and the meat was full of flavor. We also ordered yakisoba, which wasn't part of the prix fixe. Tasted good but nothing past standard expectations. We let the waiter know we had a 30th birthday at the table, and they brought a couple scoops of vanilla ice cream with a candle, and did a decent job getting the whole room to participate in the singing. It could also be the type of crowd this place attracts, since it seemed that everyone was so friendly and approachable. Thanks to the quick and consistent service, we were out in a little over an hour with no complaints.
