Hong Yen is by far one of my favorite restaurants on the planet. All of there food is magnificent and I eat here many times a week. My first worthy mention is the cost and portion of the food. Not only is the price extremely reasonable but the portion is just about as big as a bowl of soup can get. My personal food of choice is Pho and really it doesn't matter which type cause they are all just as equally delicious. When comparing this Vietnamese restaurant to another with relatively the same menu I find that Hong Yen has the superior flavor. I can also contest that the Korean BBQ short ribs rival that of a Korean restaurant in both price and flavor. Ofcourse there is still the Vietnamese influence but it tastes just as delicious as if I was dining at a Korean restaurant. I highly recommend this restaurant to every single person I know because the menu is large enough to please even the pickiest of eaters!!!! read more

Does anyone remember the family that used to have the amazing Vietnamese place on Sunshine. Probably 8-10 years ago?! They closed and went to St Louis I think. This same family are the owners of this amazing place. I love and still love their food and this location is great! I had the spring rolls and the pork clear noodle soup (hù tiêu heo). Large selection from basic Pho to mussels. I had the Pho; broth was on the sweet side, large portion. There was the waterfall decor that made a loud noise. This has recently become hands down my favorite Asian restaurant and that's really hard for me to do pick a favorite Asian restaurant because there is an any kind of Asian food I don't think it's wonderful. Hong Yen Is really bringing us all to the table where else can you find a restaurant that serves ox tail pho, frog legs, and duck? Not only do they serve frog legs and dark but they have it prepared in multiple manners. All I can say is wow! Everything I've eaten at Hong Yen reminds me back in 1980 when I worked In a restaurant with several Vietnamese women who would bring me lunch we work at an American Chinese restaurant full of cashew chicken but they refused to let me eat that they wanted me to eat the foods that they loved that's what going to Hong Yen reminds me of real Vietnamese cooking. And in all these years I've never had a Vietnamese sandwich but oh my gosh I wish somebody would've given me one of these is a child I'm amazed that a sandwich that is pork cucumber peppers pickled carrots and cilantro without any condiments can be as amazing as it is. But I think the ox tail pho is my favorite. But I'm going to say it again you can't go wrong it doesn't matter pick a dart throat at the menu everything you will get here will be wonderful! read more

This place is my favorite Vietnamese food in Springfield so far. I liked their Muc Xao Xa Ot(squid) and Bo Luc Lac (Filet Mignon).

Small restaurant but the food is good! I always order the rice platter with pork. Never disappoints. The egg rolls are alright and the spring rolls are good! I like their hoisin sauce that the spring rolls comes with. Some other places serve a peanut sauce with theirs but this one is different. I've had their bun bo hue and it's okay. I love mine spicy so I always have to add more of the chili oil in mine. The service can be a hit or miss. They are usually slow when I come in. This is probably one of the cleaner and flavorful vietnamese restaurants in town (that I've tried). Oh and if you've never had vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk, you must try it! It has the perfect mix with bitter and sweet. Love!! read more

This restaurant has many authentic and delicious Vietnamese dishes; though, my favorite dish is still "Bun Bo Hue". It's because no matter how many times I order this dish; the broth, the noodle, the meats, and the herbs are so consistent and so flavorful. What makes this dish authentic is the pork nuckle and the pork blood gelatin. If you don't particularly care for the pork nuckle and the pork blood gelatin; my recommendation is to order $2 rare eye round beef and add that to your dish. It will taste heavenly good. This place is clean and has a nice atmosphere. The owner's wife is very friendly and always welcome you with a smile. The waitress was great. 10/5 on that front. The food was really just okay, though. Someone on the facebook made a snarky comment about the broth being just sugar water and I didn't think much of it until I ordered the pho. It was so bland I added the entire herb plate, an entire extra plate of cilantro and an extra half of a lime. This place wasn't bad, I'd just say incomplete. The food was fresh, I just spent 10 minutes getting it right. If you love vietnamese food for the plethora of veggies and tasty herbs, maybe try a different place, but other than that, no complaints. It was just pretty forgettable. That being said I may just have a super western palate because the 4 vietnamese people I know all HIGHLY recommended this place. *just opened the spring rolls I took to go and they were split down the middle because they were overcooked. I have only had Pho one other time before trying this place and it had been many years. The portion is very large for the price and the flavor was great. I got the Pho with the rare beef and meatballs. I loved the rare beef but I found the meatballs to be a bit odd in flavor and texture. Next time I will order it with just the rare beef. The quality of the meat was excellent. My friend ordered the squid stir fry which was a bit expensive and a small portion for the price paid although it was delicious. It was odd the pho was adequately priced for the size but the squid dish was not. The service was excellent and I will definitely go back and try some other items on the menu. Update 04/24/2018 - after going back many times and sampling other menu items I have changed my review from 4 to 5 stars. The food is consistently excellent and the staff is great. I've eaten here twice with a friend from Arkansas who only wants to eat here when in town. My friend introduced me to pho, and I was so pleasantly surprised by how delicious it is! I really love this little restaurant. It's quite, small, cheap, and delicious! I get hungry every time I drive by. The pho comes in a really big bowl; it's almost impossible to finish all of it! My wife and I ate here and it was fantastic. I am American and she is Vietnamese. I have many. Vietnamese friends so I get to try many Vietnamese dishes and my wife and I try all the Vietnamese restaurants we find and this is by far the best. The atmosphere is normal for a small restaurant but the food is amazing. It tasted like the Vietnamese home cooking I am used to. I am not talking about normal home cooking I am talking about family get to get her and show off your cooking skills home cooking. The prices are normal for regular Chinese dining but less than or the same as other Vietnamese restaurants. Just to let you know, Vietnamese food takes more prep and cooking time than Chinese is why it normally runs higher. In this case it was worth every penny. Hope you all try it. read more

My family had a favorite Vietnamese/Chinese place several years ago on West Sunshine. We would go at least once a week. My son would run around and play with the owners son after we finished eating and let our meal settle. Unfortunately they closed. We were heartbroken. We have gone to pretty much every Vietnamese restaurant in town and would usually say, "It's ok but it just isn't Little Saigon". When we stepped through the doors at Hong Yen I was stunned to find the owner of our favorite place! They were back!! I was so happy, I couldn't believe it! We had just stopped in for a snack and to check it out so I ordered an order of spring rolls and my son had the combination fried rice. Those spring rolls...I pretty much judge a Vietnamese place by their spring rolls and these were as perfect as they used to be. They serve the rolls with a hoisin based sauce that it amazing, not watered down peanut butter like many places. The fried rice is just freaking amazing. I was a little surprised at the price of the rice as it is a little pricier than most in town. We went back the next day for some Pho and it was perfect! Life is good. My only complaint, and it really isn't a complaint, more a wish- is that they still served some of the Chinese dishes. They had the best egg foo young I have ever had and wish I could have it again! read more
