He told me he used to have multiple Hong Kong Bakeries in the south bay, but now there is only 1 and this is the one in mountain view. I got a variety of items to try - the wife pastry, egg tart, mango mochi, white sugar honeycomb cake and the banana mochi. The wife pastry, egg tart and white sugar honeycomb cake was good, nothing special. However, the mango mochi was the highlight - I would come back just for that. There was fresh mango in the mochi with the nice mochi around it. Highly recommend. Their banana mochi is also good, no banana slices in it, but has good banana flavor. The bakery is definitely a hole-in-the-wall establishment, but when their sign up front proclaims their cha siu bao and homemade mango mochi as some of their most sought-after items, I thought, why not take a look. The lady greeted me as I walked in, and she went to the back to tend to the kitchen when I told her I needed more time to think about what I wanted to eat. The bakery is cozy, and there's a variety of things on the menu from bao to little cakes to egg tarts. After a bit, the lady came back to the register when I indicated that I was ready. I got a cha siu bao and three mango mochi. As the lady rang me up on the register, we made small talk. "I like to get to know my customers," she told me. Very endearing, very homelike. I felt like I was at my grandma's house again as I watched the lady heat the bao in the toaster oven. She bagged the warmed bao, boxed the mochi, and handed everything to me. "Enjoy!" The cha siu bao had been steamed with care. It was fluffy and the cha siu was tender but on the sweeter side. The mango mochi was fresh, chewy, and fascinating. Instead of sweet, ripe mango like the kind you might find at Hui Lau Shan, this mochi had tart green mango to contrast with the sweet rice mochi and coconut flakes. Not too sweet! From the aesthetic to the food to the service, everything about the bakery said family-run business. We almost left but then the owner came out and told us he had some in the oven, where they were being kept warm. The buns were pretty sizable and very fresh and tasted delicious. The price if I can remember, it was about $3.00 +/- but they are now selling what they call a "bigger" Baked BBQ pork bun for $6.0 I don't think it's double the filling or double the dough. It seems more like it's just 50% more But for double the price. I bought 2 bigger Baked BBQ pork buns and she placed in a white paper bag. At home, I was eager to break into it, and the dough/bun baked nicely, almost more of a light bake, and had a glossy top. However, the red meat filling looked minimal IMO and when I taste it, I felt like they may have used too much cornstarch or flour slurry to give it the more gelatinous like consistency. Unfortunately, it just tasted cornstarch pasty and flour forward. Also, the meat in the filling was too sweet and too gingery (or maybe used a fall or winter season spice) Note to self: Skip this bakery. Very nice lady. Got coconut bun, red bean bun, custard steamed bun, baked custard, and coconut custard bun. Unfortunately you could tell the bakery goods were a few days old. Just had that drier taste. The custard baked bun and coconut bun also had the filling not really right made. Didn't really like them. Husband and I jumped in the car and started heading over as it closes at 7pm as per owner. We knew we will not make it as we left our house 645pm. We called them and Mrs Yang said she will wait for us. Got there 710pm and she was still open waiting for me. After choosing all the stuff that I want my total ends up $41.25 They only accept cash and I only have $40 with me. Mrs Yang let's me take my goodies and just said "you can return the $1.25 next time. Super sweet when she actually doesn't know me. She also gave me instructions on how to reheat my pork buns (for how long and with wet paper towel). In the car, I had to open them and start munching away. That first bite of the Moon Cale with Taro!!!! Yuuuummmm!!!! Now I know why it's $6.95 for a piece. It's delicious!!! I've always wanted to try HK Bakery but failed multiple times because I don't carry cash around. Then one day HK bakery randomly came up in a conversation with my coworkers and they said: "You have to check it out. It's so amazing. Too good to miss!" So this week, I set a goal for myself: try HK Bakery at least once. Visit 1: We came on the weekend and got the famous mango mochi and banana mochi. Both were delicious, especially the mango mochi - packed with fresh diced mango. Both were so soft, chewy, and smooth, like a sweet dream. Unfortunately, we had ice cream right before, and I don't have a sweet tooth, so by the time we finished the mochi, I was too overwhelmed by all the sweetness to fully appreciate how good these mochis were at the moment. Visit 2: On Monday I was craving some delicious bbq pork bun and egg tart, so I swung by for lunch at 12ish pm. To my disappointment they were closed. Luckily, I'm very persistent (and impatient) when it comes to good food - I called at 3pm on the same day and they were open! The sweet bakery owner lady told me they are guaranteed to be open 8:30am-12:30pm EVERYDAY. Afternoon hours may very because they have other stuff to take care of. I immediately swung by and got a bbq pork bun and two egg tarts. OMG they are good!!! Best bbq pork bun I've ever had in the US, and best egg tarts I've ever had in my entire life! The bbq pork bun was packed with lots of really delicious bbq pork, mostly lean. The bun itself is so good too! Fluffy, soft, slightly sweet. I try to avoid carbs so sometimes when I eat dim sum buns, I "blasphemously" leave the outer layer bun. I could and would not do that to this bun. I ate it all, everything, even the bits of bun sticking on the wrapper sheet. Tip: heating it up for a bit will make it more delicious. The egg tarts are even bigger stars. I don't have words to describe how good they are. If you are an egg tart experienced, just look at the photos I took and you'll understand how good they are. Such flaky pastry crust, so thick, soft custard filling. Simply the best. I got the hotdog bun, and honestly it was simply alright. It's hard to mess up a hotdog, and they did not mess up here. But I couldn't really fathom why it was more expensive than other places. A cute little bakery centered in Downtown Mountain View! I stumbled across this bakery walking around the busy streets. It seems to be a mom and pop type of bakery with plenty of items to fit anyone's cravings. The woman who took my order was extremely welcoming. It was my first time coming in here and she provided suggestions for what she says are the most popular items. You could tell that she genuinely loves her job which I really appreciated. Huge six inch diameter and packed with lots of chunks of char sui. Their egg custard tarts are also super fresh and creamy. One of the few places in the SF bay area which sells moon cakes year round.
