My husband loved HomeState while I thought it was mid. Our views were so different that I'll return based on how great he thought it was. We ordered a Tijuana panther, a picadillo taco, and a brisket taco. We added a side of their queso and a tortilla with butter. I love the big patio, booths inside, and service. It was pretty slow for not being very busy and what appeared to be overstuffed. The chips and queso were very good. The Tijuana panther taco was sopping wet and I could only finish half of it because it was so messy and hard to eat without asking for a fork and knife. My husband's picadillo taco is where it was at. It was tangy from the pickled jalapenos, meat was beautifully seasoned, and tortilla dry enough to hold. These are the best tortillas ever! Made of four ingredients. I would highly recommend a visit to HomeState for tacos and tortillas. They use said flour tortillas for the tacos, although we also purchased a dozen tortillas since they tasted so fresh and amazing. In addition, I got a Ranch salad which was jam packed with fresh ingredients and also a good size side of soyrizo for $4. I didn't even notice the missing avocado on the salad until we had left the restaurant because I was so distracted with the delicious tortillas. I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon around 1 PM. You order at the counter, and the line moved quickly. Once we ordered, our food came out in about 10 minutes. We ordered: *Tijuana Panther: I had this on a corn tortilla. It felt dry and lacked flavor. *Chips & Queso: Pretty solid, and the small order came with a generous portion. *Crispy Potatoes: The first batch was soft instead of crispy. We mentioned it to the staff, and they made a fresh batch right away, which was delicious. The sauce it comes with is great too. They have a self-serve area for water and condiments. You bus your own table, but the employees still went above and beyond. A couple of them checked in on us while we were eating. When I asked for a to-go box, they packed a bag with chips on top of the containers without me asking. Really thoughtful. There's both indoor and outdoor seating, and the space feels open and bright. I've lived just 2 blocks over from where Homestate now stands for 13 years. While I was heartbroken when Red & White shut its doors for good, I was hopeful and optimistic we'd be getting some fresh new spots in its place. I almost always give new places a few months to work their kinks out before volunteering as tribute, and my first couple of visits were just okay, probably warranting 3/5 stars overall. About 6 months ago, a friend of mine catered her son's birthday at the beach with a huge spread of probably half a dozen different tacos from Homestate, and after sampling most of them I was inspired to return again. Since the party I've been to Homestate probably three different times and each time I've enjoyed it more and more. I have learned to steer clear of the tacos with soyrizo or soydillo as they are always insanely dripping with grease, and no matter what tortilla you choose they fall apart so then you're reduced to eating your taco with fork. I also find the cookie milk to be really underwhelming. My absolutely favorite go-to tacos these days are: #1 - Emo's (refried black beans, guacamole, cabbage slaw & pickled red onions) on corn, SOOOO good every single time, and #2 - Trinity for a classic breakfast choice. Both red and green salsas are good. The main reason I'm finally writing a review after so many visits is solely based on my most recent visit this week where Alex was running the register. It was morning time and she was just an absolute joy to interact with, despite being a brief exchange; her positive energy and recommendations of what she'd suggest paired for a beautiful start to my morning and set the tone for the rest of the day. I ordered everything to go: the Trinity (eggs, bacon, potatoes, cheddar), guacamole and chips, side of bacon and cookie milk iced coffee. The coffee was delicious! I decided to stop by here on the way home from San Diego! I heard about HomeState from an old YouTube video and it was always on my list of must try's. Ambiance/Service: This is a fast casual Tex mex place that specializes in breakfast tacos. There's plenty of seating but it does get chilly in there so bring a jacket. The woman who helped us was informative and kind, giving her suggestions on what to order. Food Consensus: My family and I ordered an array of breakfast tacos. I ordered the Trinity and Pecos. The tacos weren't bad but they weren't the best either. Out of the 2, I would recommend the Pecos. I also tried both the corn and flour tortillas and I think the flour is superior to the corn. The corn tortilla was a bit dry for my taste. I think at $4-6 per taco, the price point is a bit steep based on the size and quality of the taco. A taste like Torchys but closer to home. I've had HomeState on my list for quite a while, but I'm rarely in Oceanside. When I found myself in the area, I knew I had to visit! Stopped in here on a whim cuz I'd seen it on Instagram enough that I thought I should check it out finally. They did not disappoint at all! Service was super easy, they took my order properly and fast. There was plenty of meat in that one and turned out to be my favorite. The last was the Guadalupe with eggs, chorizo and cheddar cheese. Hubby and I decided to grab brunch here for our one day stay in San Diego. We'd always wanted to try one of their locations but this one popped up in front of us so we swung by. Your food is served with two squeeze bottles of salsa (green/red) which honestly, felt really good lol. To have your own personal salsa in such an easy dispense way is amazing. Everything tasted so good. I thought I made an error in only ordering two tacos but honestly, I was good after those and the extras we got. Food came quickly and EVERYONE was nice and friendly. More than a few servers came by to check on us which I understand is normal for them. They had a lot of seating outdoors as well as indoors. My son went to college in San Antonio, TX so I've been going there for 20+ years and know South Texas food well. Needless to say HS hit the mark on the breakfast tacos, queso, migas and ranch water. Tortillas are made fresh on site and are the anchor to the menu. Plenty of non meat options but they also have a legit Brisket, chicken and Picadillo. If I lived here Home State Texas Kitchen would be a weekly staple for sure. I was so excited to try this place. I lived in TX for a few years and one of my favorite foods were the brisket breakfast tacos. Although the brisket tacos were very good, the brisket lacked flavor and the meat could have been browned a little more. The other taco I tried was good too, no egg, but with potatoes. The spicy Paloma though, kicked butt. The service was OK front end, but outstanding on the back end. They had run out of chips for the chips and queso, though after ordering potatoes and queso, I saw they still had a tub of some chips left. I asked one of the servers if I could have some, since I made a long trip to eat here. She was very accommodating and immediately served me a basket full of chips! A+ to her!
