I will say that the decor was nice, with blues and whites that were reminiscent of the sea. The bar also had a large TV mounted above it with an aquarium scene playing. The lights also seemed to have an aqua theme and reminded me of bubbles rising through the ocean, although I thought the restaurant itself felt quite dim. For dinner on this evening, I decided to start with the fried calamari appetizer and then went with the Crudo Burger for my entree. The menu described the fried calamari as "tender calamari lightly fried and sautéed with tempura zucchini, banana peppers, and garlic butter." The Crudo Burger was described as an "8 oz house blend burger topped with lightly fried Brie, bacon pepper jam, roasted garlic aioli, and arugula on a buttery baked brioche, served with our signature fries." The calamari came out first and had great breading that was light and sort of shattered when I bit into it. I loved the banana peppers, but the calamari itself was rubbery. The zucchini was a fun addition that helped break up the flavors, and I wish there had been more of it. I also would have liked to taste more of the garlic butter. Once I finished that, my Crudo Burger came out, and between the burger and all the French fries, it was absolutely massive. On my first bite, I got hints of maple from the bacon jam. The burger itself was cooked nicely to a medium and had great flavor, while the bun was nicely toasted. My fries were good as well, seasoned nicely with some Parmesan and truffle flavor. Last but not least was the fried Brie in the middle of my burger. Honestly, it sort of put me over the top, and after eating it, I couldn't finish anything else. I ended up getting both the check and a to-go box for half of my burger and three-quarters of my fries. It's worth noting that my server was nice and enthusiastic throughout my time there. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. There was just one egg for a $26 benedict. The shakshuka was my first time trying shakshuka! To me, it tastes pretty similar to chili. I really enjoyed its tangy tomato and spicy flavors. The dish as presented was really more of an avocado toast with shakshuka on top. It might have been more successful to add the avocado/guacamole as a unique base on the plate, with the tomato sauce and eggs on top with toast on the side (as is the way shakshuka is traditionally served) because halfway through the bread got really soggy & less appetizing. The pumpkin horchata cortado tasted darker than I expected, and I wish it had a stronger pumpkin flavor. The caramel apple butter cold brew was delicious and creamy. It did taste like apple pie a bit. In hindsight, I would've asked for it to be made less sweet, but that's just a preference thing. The corn muffin was tasty. It was warm, sweet, not dry, and had the signature grainy texture throughout. I think the total came out to about $16-$17 which is standard. The staff was friendly and answered my little questions about the drinks. I like that they open early and close late (for a coffee shop). As a Gulf War veteran, I especially appreciated being able to choose a seat at the end of the counter, where I had personal space, a clear view of my surroundings, and room to relax. I could enjoy the chefs at work, look out the window, and be fully present for my wife's birthday without needing to explain or request special consideration. Our server, Rebecca, was exceptional.
