TIP: Make sure your map says their new address. I had typed in Homeboy Industries Recycling and it took me to the old address. I even had the correct address on my calendar and when I clicked on it, it took me to the old address downtown LA. Just double check it. I wished i did. Once I got the the place, it was in a very nice industrial area. The signs were clear as to what to do. Have everything in your trunk and someone will come out to help you. In my case, I had 4 helpful gentlemen to help. They quickly assessed what I had then and there and were able to take it all! I had an Ipad, an old Mac, some old metal pans, batteries, cords, etc. I felt good coming there to have my things processed. Next time I go, I am going to bring them some Portos or something. Great service, and an easy way to get rid of a bunch of old stuff (old printer, stereo system, space heater) in a more sustainable way than just tossing it in the trash. And big bonus that it contributes in some small way to the mission of Homeboy Industries. I never go out to Commerce, but it was actually a pretty short trip. (Only constructive suggestion is to clearly mark the dock you're supposed to pull up to. Isidore is the bee's knees! Did not know of any electronics recycling centers in the Echo Park area but a quick Google search introduced me to Isidore among other electronics recycling centers with less than stellar reviews. They're not exactly in Echo Park but the drive to Chinatown isn't too bad even with a little bit of rush hour traffic. Needed to get rid of at least seven old white MacBooks and Isidore was eager to take those off my hands. Prior to driving there, I called them. The lady who picked up my phone call was super helpful; she made sure to inform me about the parking sitch as well. They're located on a dead end street but parking shouldn't be a problem with people coming and going to drop off recyclables and whatnot. Pretty rad space with a display of all sorts of electronics - a retro arcade machine, bunch of outdated telephones, TV sets, etc. It was like traveling back in time. Heaping piles of junk and murals lace the exterior and the street where Isidore is located. Who knew recycling could feel less like a chore but more of a fun excursion!? Went back again a couple weeks later to drop off two more old MacBooks and they were playing Bon Iver in their warehouse. I almost wanted to stay and hang out for a little bit until the song was over. Unless they were playing Bon Iver's 'For Emma, Forever Ago' album in its entirety then I probably would have just stayed until the work day was over. Way impressed by them. Ricky appeared quickly to take our stuff, and he was super friendly, helpful and fun to talk to. Everything was accepted, including items which can be difficult to recycle elsewhere. Do be aware that as of March 2021, this is a new location at 6433 Canning St., Commerce, CA 90040. It's a nicer building, clean and fresh, with easy parking. Commerce may sound far for some, but it's just a little ways southeast of downtown Los Angeles. I went in for a screen fix and they went above and beyond, fixing numerous dents and blemishes in the body. I must have dropped that thing more than 10 times. This is a great branch off for the HomeBoy brand, but the execution is a little convoluted. Because we are fans of Home Boy Industries, we drove a distance to support them rather than someplace closer. When we got there, it seemed straightforward until someone came out to "help" and started paying through everything we had brought. Fine, except they made a huge mess in the back of my truck because there were certain things they won't take. No problem if you can't take it, but no need to throw stuff around in such a manner that I now can't drive my vehicle to another place without having to climb up in the bed and clean up your mess. I fail to understand the point of a recycling company to which not only do you have to take stuff to but then they charge you a ridiculous amount ($10/satellite dish?), which is not advertised on their website.
