    Signs (Nov 2023)

*** Drive-thru only *** S.A.F.E. (Solvents / Automotive / Flammables / Electronics) Collection Centers are permanent household hazardous waste collection centers for Los Angeles City and Los Angeles County residents. These collection sites open every weekend for residents to drop off their household hazardous waste (HHW) and electronic waste (e-waste). LA Sanitation operates these sites and this location is one of six S.A.F.E. Collection Centers in LA County as of November 2023. Few quick rules: (1) It is against the law to transport more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds of hazardous waste to collection sites. (2) Waste will be collected with its containers and place waste securely in the trunk and separated from personal belongings. (3) Remove all data from electronic devices and personal information from and medication labels before disposal while keeping original containers with labels (recommended). (4) Residents stay inside of their vehicles when the waste is offloaded and turn off engines as residents are unable to unload their own waste. [Process]: Follow the drive-thru lane, complete an oral survey by the staff, drive to the designated unloading area, turn off engine, unlock trunk, let technicians unload wastes, and drive off. The staff didn't check my driver license to see if I actually live in LA County. [Accepted waste]: * Aerosol Cans * Asbestos (must be abated by professionals, wetted, and double bagged in clearly-labeled plastic bags) * Car and Household Batteries (alkaline, lithium, lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, car/RV batteries - please tape both terminals of the batteries with clear packing tape, electrical tape, or duct tape) * Compressed Gas Cylinders (propane, butane, helium, MAPP gas, and fire extinguishers - 1 tank accepted per visit) * Electronic Waste (TVs, Computers, Monitors, Printers, Cell Phones, Cables/Wiring) * Home-generated Sharps such as needles and lancets (must be brought in a State-approved container or in a hard plastic puncture-proof container - the container must have a lid or else loose sharps will not be accepted) * Unused Medicine (Except Controlled Substances) * Household Cleaning Products * LED Light Bulbs, Fluorescent Tubes/Bulbs and Ballasts (with no metal fixtures) * Paints and Solvents * Pool and Garden Chemicals * Treated/Contaminated Wood (wood that contains chemical preservatives and must be less than 3 ft in length) * Used Motor Oil, Oil Filters, Antifreeze and other Automotive Fluids. [Not accepted waste]: * Acetylene, CO2 and oxygen tanks/cylinders * Ammunition, firecrackers and explosives * Business/commercial wastes * e-Cigarettes & Vape pens * Electric Vehicle (EV) batteries * Exercise equipment such as treadmills * Fans, heaters, air conditioners, and vacuums * Laboratory waste * Marine flares * Mercury, metallic * Metal light fixtures * Radioactive materials and medical/biological wastes * Recyclables such as glass and plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, aluminum cans (these can be placed in your Blue Bin) * Smoke detectors * Tires and bulky items such as furniture and large appliances * Yard waste (these can be placed in your Green Bin). This is one of super helpful and free government services that everyone should know about. P.S. - They are closed on LA City-observed holidays and waste collection services are suspended during rainy weather.

You know those popcorn collector tins at movie theaters? We had three of those Star Wars tins filled to the brims with used, expired, and busted batteries of all sizes and brands. We also had some anti-freeze and motor oil. Then there were the old school fluorescent light bulbs that we replaced with LEDs. All of these items and a tons more household hazardous waste and E-waste that you shouldn't throw in your garbage can at home should be brought here to the S.A.F.E. Collection Center. S.A.F.E. stands for Solvents/Automotive/Flammables/Electronics. This is my closest site, but there are 6 other locations available to residents of Los Angeles County. This particular center is open Saturdays and Sundays except holidays from 9:00am-3:00pm. You don't have to sign anything or submit any paperwork. They only ask for your zip code. Just pack it up as best as you can. Or like with the broken light bulbs we had, we just put them in a plastic bag and they accepted them. Put everything you need to get rid of that S.A.F.E. can legally accept in the back of your trunk or truck bed. Follow the signs. Stay in the vehicle while they unload it. The crew working when we were there (8/10/19) was friendly. Best of all, it's free of charge. Cooler than Snoopy's alter-ego, Joe Cool.

Quick and efficient! Staff had me in and out in 5 minutes, removing all my items directly from my car. Everyone wears masks and is a well run operation.

This was my very first visit to this location. I never knew it existed. Nice place to drop off hazardous waste. I love how organized they are. During this pandemic they are running the place in such a way that it keeps the customers and the employees safe. What's interesting is that they are open only on the weekend (sat & sun) from 9am - 3pm

Gen X'ers know about eAntiques. We been dumping electronics our whole lives. 3D printing the save icon, rly?! smh. Gathering up deprecated by mobile and cloud gizmos is a sure fire way to feel one's age. I've been frequenting the El Segundo location for years and this location is a god send being close to home base. It's not as nice ofc (dusty dirt roads and sketch industrial area) But think about all the strip clubs you can fake checkin for the lulz. Pretty much the same routine. Pull up and stay in your car. Staff will remove items from your trunk. Be kind to the planet. Completely freeeeeeeeee! Your tax dollars at work.

Dropped a bunch of old paint buckets and batteries off!

Ask the Community - SAFE Collection Center

Do they accept bed frames and mattresses?

    No.

Do they take electronic items like hair dryers and rice cookers as well as light bulbs and cables?

Electronics can be recycled here. Not sure about light bulbs and cables.

Has anyone stopped by lately? Has it re-opened since the initial shelter-in-place order? Thanks!

I went yesterday, and it was open.

I volunteered to redeem the munched plastic bottles, rattling cans, and occasional bottle we found while tidying up the neighborhood. I was pleasantly surprised. Glendale Recycling Center is efficiently run and the service is great. The staff helps move the lines along and everyone is very nice and hardworking. And if I read the prices correctly, GRC pays a few cents more for plastics + cans than those SuperA grocery store guys in a delivery truck. I know this because I left the SuperA guy in Cypress Park when he decided to take his lunch 15 mins. early and close up shop. Glad I looked to YELP and found this place in a snap without wasting time. Also, this place is almost like an all-in-one recycling center where you can not only get CRV money, but also drop off old electronics, all those Amazon cardboard boxes, and some other things that you can't throw into your regular trash bin. (Some items they don't accept, but they'll direct you to where you can take them.) Since this was a pleasant & relatively painless experience, I just might make a daily habit out our Earth Day practice and return every now and then.

Punch line before story- watch the weight on the scales!…read more We had the copper removed from our home that will need a rebuild after a fire. Our plumber brought his apprentice over who knew there are 3 different price levels. Pure copper pipe. The parts that connect that have solder. And the brass parts Upon arriving we thought there would be an entrance in the back alley. Nope. Customers unload in front on San Fernando Rd. An attendant will give you garbage containers to haul metal in. We had 3 types so 3 bins. When the man at the weigh station put the copper on I was watching the screen and took a photo. (Our plumbers apprentice had warned us about this place and said the best price was in Simi or Sunland...too far and too long for our meager amount) Then he weighed the other two while we were talking with another staff member. (Shouldn't have been distracted while conducting business) The guy at the scale shows us the total and I realize the Copper 1 was now much lighter than the original weight! I showed him the photo on my phone and he corrected it! In hindsight I should have had all 3 weighed again. But we were tired, dirty and the whole process pretty depressing and I didn't want to make a huge deal out of it. So consumer beware! It's a good service they provide and somewhat convenient location. But be aware and pay attention!
