I fell in love with HPD in Lubbock when I was in college. It was my uncle's favorite place to go so I have fond memories of eating with him there. I was so happy when they opened this place up here. I need to eat there more often. I love their burgers, tator tots, chicken fried steak, all the sides and desserts! Dining in just makes me happy. I love all the baseball memorabilia! Well, Yelp has the wrong hours listed. Had it closing at 9pm on Sunday when it fact, it closes at 3pm on Sunday. I showed up at 3:30. Fortunately my office is right across the street so it wasn't a completely wasted trip. Maybe will try again sometime. read more

Tonight was my first night of trying out this place out even though I've been in Amarillo for two years. To be honest, I always liked the name but I thought it was just a hamburger place and that didn't interest me. This evening I was in the parking lot of Big Lots after doing some business at Wells Fargo and started looking on Yelp for a place to have dinner. I was looking for someplace inexpensive but good. When I came across this place I took another look at it and between the comments and the pictures I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did. I was a little worried when I walked up to the front door because there was an unpleasant smell in the air but as soon as I stepped inside the aromas were wonderful from the home cooked food. I saw on the Specials Board they had beef stew with cornbread. I was debating between that and trying their baked potato but I'll have to try the baked potato next time because the Stew won out. You order from a counter and then go sit down and wait for your number to be called. The place was about 10 times bigger than I expected it to be since it is classified as a diner. It has a sort of 1950s look with the checkerboard tile and all around are street signs and murals with a baseball theme. Everything looked very clean and I noticed that they came around and cleaned up tables shortly after people left which is always good to see. The beef stew was absolutely delicious. It reminded me of my mother's cooking which is a compliment. She wouldn't have put tomatoes in her beef stew but I do so it might have reminded me more of my own. It was so nice to see large chunks of real carrots, not canned or frozen and they were generous with the amount of beef. The perfect meal on a chilly night. I decided to splurge and try the cobbler. I don't usually order drinks and desserts to save money. The cobbler wasn't bad but it wasn't nearly as good as the beef stew. It might have even been a canned Peach filling. It had an odd consistency like Elmer's Glue but was uncannily clear. There was only one slice of peach on it. The crust was not light and flakey but more dense and chunky. I ate the whole thing but probably wouldn't order it again. The employees I encountered were very nice. I definitely plan on coming back sometime. read more

We used to love visiting Home Plate Diner. But our last couple visits have been sub-par. The restaurant was not busy, so there really was no excuse. The food had a good flavor, but it was luke warm. Had it been a hot meal it would have been good! My husband did not get all of his order, they left off the fries with his burger. I was done eating before he finally got them, and to top it off when he finally did get them; they service him the wrong ones and they too were NOT fresh hot fries. They too were just barely warm and kinda gross. I think they had been sitting in the back for awhile. There used to be two sizes of Chicken Fired steak there, now there is only one SMALL chicken fried steak. I was a little disappointed with it. For the two of to eat there - it was almost $40.00 (Chicken fried steak, Hamburger with cold fries, one piece of pie, and two drinks) We will most likely not return. Or at least for a good year or so until we forget how bad this visit was. Maybe they will step up and be what they used to be before too many customers decide not to go back as well. read more

I love diners! There is no question that this one rates high on my list. My spouse says that he'd come back any time. We were traveling on Sunday (11/19) heading east for a vacation, and as is our usual habit, we reached Amarillo at lunch time. I started looking for a lunch locale and this one popped up as one of the top 15 places in town. The menu sounded good so we made the detour from the interstate. We arrived after the lunch rush and didn't have any wait for a table. We walked in to the counter and ordered, and the food was ready quickly. Hubby liked his hamburger and the fries were really good. My salad was only okay - I would have liked more things in the salad than lettuce; there was one boiled egg cut in half, and three thick cucumber slices that were, unfortunately, unpeeled. WHEN will restaurateurs realize that cucumber skin is NOT meant to be eaten, particularly when the skin has been polished. Peel those cucumbers? I would also have liked some cheese and maybe some celery or shredded carrot on the salad. It was relatively bland, but the Italian dressing was delicious. The place is typical diner: checkerboard tile floor, formica-topped tables and naugahyde-upholstered chairs, bright lights, and not much atmosphere. There are a lot of baseball-team pennants lining the walls, including some for teams that no longer exist. One wall has a huge photograph of a batter in what I think was Texas Rangers stadium. Stopped in based on reviews while passing through. Easy to find with maps and about 3-5 minutes from interstate. Big seating area with nice baseball decor and memorabilia. You go to counter to order your meal and pick up as well. Wife had the burger with onion rings. It was okay, regular burger thin meat, onion rings came out crispy as we ordered and were okay. I had the small chicken fried steak, real mashed potatoes and green beans; sides were good chicken fry was thin and I've had much better. Price is fair and staff was nice. read more

Denny's meets NY diner? Not exactly. Very simple basic restaurant with a fair selection of food choices at reasonable prices. It's not sit down waited service. You order at the counter and then come back to pickup your order when your number is called. I had the day's special - chicken salad. Again, pretty basic salad with some cut up chicken tossed on top. Went to Home Plate Diner about 5 years ago. It was awful. Had the Chicken friend steak, it was cold and it was a cold night and these fools had their air conditioners on full blast. What a joke. bunch of kids running the place, no one in charge or responsible.... Then went back last week. UNBELIEVABLY AWFUL Same cold food, same kids, but at least it was hot outside this time so the AC was welcome. Steer clear of this joke. read more

I visited Amarillo and ate here. This is an over rated locale. I got the chicken strips with green beans, and curly fries. all of the food is straight from the freezer. The chicken strips were tasteless and small. The curly fries were under-cooked and unseasoned, and the green beans were straight from a can and were not seasoned in any way. I guess it is impossible to mess up Pioneer Gravy mix. read more

My wife and I dined here for the first time a couple of weeks ago. We both had the large chicken fried steak. It comes with two medium sized patties and cream or brown gravy and Texas toast with your choice of two sides. We had mashed potatoes and okra. That was the freshest and best tasting okra that we had ever had. The potatoes were great, also. I was disappointed that they did not have very many sides to choose from, but the quality of the food made up for it. The steak was very tasty and tender , as well. We both felt that our food was a good value and we both left full and satisfied. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful. We will be going back, in the near future.
