Sundaes - Two bowls of ice cream sundaes topped with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and various toppings are positioned on a counter at Holsten's, a nostalgic ice cream parlor. The background features a menu, a Christmas wreath, and the interior decor of the establishment, including ceiling tiles and lighting fixtures.

First time here, and although I'm allergic to dairy I am a sucker for ice cream and when my friend said it was the best, I knew I had to try it out and suffer the consequences later. Spoiler - I suffered. But it was worth it! Such a cute spot, it gave small town vibes with a young staff that was nice and happy to help. As a first timer I tried just plain vanilla, my theory was if you can do basic well then you must be good. Well they passed the test. Best texture in the ice cream, just how I appreciate it. Definitely will be back to try other flavors. While we were there someone ordered a burger and fries, and I noticed that they have crinkle fries, which are my absolute favorites, so I will definitely be back to try food as well.

Stopped by 2x since we live close by and had good experiences both times! The young servers working do their best and are very nice. We've ordered banana split, ice cream soda floats, the house special (2 burgers) and onion rings to share. They have a cute dining area or bar seats - the old time feel is very nostalgic! Soprano lovers will enjoy stopping in... would recommend at least 1x!

Ordered: House Special Burgers w Cheese (~$19): two hamburgers, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and French fries Onion Rings (~$7) Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Milkshake (~$8) Aya's take: A New Jersey institution! I've had this place on my list after watching The Sopranos for the first time last year. I assumed Holsten's was a typical old school, classic-style diner with an ice cream parlor but I didn't expect to actually like it as much as I did! The House Special Burgers w Cheese is great to split among two people! You each get a burger and split the French fries. The burger itself is pretty simple yet solid. The burgers were seasoned, it was filling, and the buns were warm & soft. They included all the classics toppings you would expect. The French fries and the Onion Rings were fried perfectly! Crispy, golden-brown, and the perfect companion to the burger. Considering they're known for their ice cream, we also got the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Milkshake which was a nice sweet treat to end on. Not only did we have a good meal but it was great to dine in the location where one of the best scenes in TV history took place. Highly recommend!

THE GOOD ---------------- + Food here is surprisingly EXCELLENT! ++++ Bacon Cheeseburger Deluxe was good. Burger was as simple as it gets, but patty was cooked perfectly medium and pretty juicy. Fries were crinkle cut and crispy. ++++ Grilled Cheese was a very simple and solid typical grilled cheese sandwich. Not spectacular or fancy in any way, but what you would expect. ++++ Side of Onion Rings (must get if you're a fan of the Sopranos!!!) were super crispy, hot and fresh. A bit on the oily side, but I'm sure it's exactly how Tony Soprano liked it. ++++ Orange Fizz tasted like a creamsicle soda with ice cream - refreshing and definitely for creamsicle lovers. ++++ Brownie Sundae with Coffee Chip and Rum Raisin ice cream and Small Sundae with Black Raspberry ice cream and Strawberries were as good as it gets when it comes to ice cream. They hit the spot and, oh yeah, they come with whipped cream and a cherry on top! + Restaurant/ice cream parlor has a super nostalgic feel inside - barstool counter seating towards the front and booths towards the back. ++++ They sell all sorts of candies and chocolate in the front. ++++ Booth where the last scene of The Sopranos show was filmed is marked off with a plaque and ANYONE can actually sit there as it's first come, first serve. + The outside of the establishment is very unassuming on the corner of a busy street. + Service was solid throughout our meal - food came out fairly quickly. THE NOT SO GOOD ---------------------------- - There is no visible parking lot so you have to park on the street outside. MIXED THOUGHTS --------------------------- = Nada. RANDOM OBSERVATIONS -------------------------------------- = Restaurant was busy, but there were always open booths throughout our lunch on a Saturday at 12:15 - 2:00 PM. = A lot of the customers were clearly fans of The Sopranos as they observed odes to the show on the wall. = THE booth where the final scene of The Sopranos was filmed was constantly occupied by customers - some even moving their stuff into that booth after prior occupiers of it had left. CONCLUSION -------------------- = We didn't expect much of the food, but it was surprisingly very good! (And I'm not saying that just because the spot has a connection with a very special TV show) We definitely came for the ice cream and for the experience of dining at an iconic film location for an iconic TV show, but we left pleasantly satisfied with our lunch. As a huge fan of The Sopranos, who actually watched the final episode air live on HBO in 2007, it was definitely a nice treat to immerse myself into a part of TV history.

    - Old-school, classic diner/candy shop/ice cream parlor vibe: counter seating up front across from the candy display, cozy booths in the back, and Ty plushies scattered throughout the space - Not too busy on the Friday after Christmas; a few out-of-town diners seemed especially excited to sit in Tony's booth - Service could've been warmer--our waitress felt a bit disinterested and was sometimes hard to flag down, even though the restaurant never got very busy - Menu is on the smaller side, focusing on basics like burgers, sandwiches, eggs/omelets, with fries and onion rings as sides - Food was surprisingly good overall: burgers were juicy but slightly rare for a medium; fries were crispy outside and soft inside; onion rings were fresh and piping hot but a bit greasy; kiddos were happy with the grilled cheese--toasted white filled with warm, gooey cheese; orange fizz tasted like a creamsicle and was very refreshing - Desserts were very generous: the small strawberry sundae with black raspberry ice cream was big enough for our family of four to share, yet we still tried the brownie sundae--which was enormous, featuring two warm, rich brownie squares pairing perfectly with the coffee chip and the rum raisin ice cream

Parallel parking across the street was a tad difficult due to the remaining snow and finding an available spot. There were four of us in our party and we were able to grab a booth in the back. The restaurant was clean and busy. We ordered some onion rings for the table while we looked at our menus. I got an egg cream and my wife got a strawberry milkshake. Both were well made and tasty. I got a couple of hot dogs with some spicy brown mustard while the rest of the group all ordered various burgers. The wait staff was attentive and pleasant. They have a little counter where you can buy gi

Did a very "Jersey" thing today and drove into Bloomfield to finally try Holsten's. They were recently ranked by NJ.com as the #1 ice cream place in NJ. The ice cream was good, but I humbly disagree with the ranking. Absolutely loved the ambiance of the place - very old school soda shop feel (this was where the final Sopranos scene ended) and the service was super friendly and quick. When it feels like 100+ outside an air conditioned ice cream place really can't be wrong. I had a scoop of Chocolate chocolate chip, Wifey had Black raspberry chip, and my son had Mint Oreo fudge. I was really glad we finally came here and checked the box. If I was in the area again I'd stop in for another flavor for sure.

There's nothing more New Jersey then sitting at a booth in Holstens. My mom grew up in Clifton, NJ and was a regular at Holsten's as a child and teenager. So when I say this place gives nostalgia, I mean it on a personal level. You don't have to have family from the area to feel nostalgic when you step into Holsten's, though. The entire vibe gives old-school 80's diner, from the decorations, to the menu, and even the prices! The entire place is always buzzing with Soprano's fans and they really play it up with pictures of the Soprano's throughout the restaurant (wish they kept the booth from the final scene though, they recently auctioned it off). I love coming here just to go back in time and sit where my mom sat 50 years ago as a young girl. The food, while decently priced, is just your average diner food. They have burgers, hot dogs, onion rings, fries, etc. Their desert menu, however, is really fun. I love getting a root-beer float, or a giant sunday, and sitting at the counter when I come here. I also love the old fashioned desert items they still offer, like egg cream (this was my mom's favorite growing up). They usually serve up everything pretty quickly and there is always seating available at the counter. I never really come to Holstens for the food though, although it isn't bad. It's more about being transported through time and having a really fun evening, which this place is guaranteed to deliver.

Yes, this is the Soprano's booth

We ordered their onion rings for lunch since they were likely Tony Soprano's last meal, and we sat in the Soprano's booth. I sat where James Gandolfini once sat. I was definitely stoked. Now, the show left you with the impression that it is a very short distance between that booth and the door. The booth is very far away from the front door. It is a very long building. I still recall Tony's point of view in the final moments each time the door opens. Apart from the distance, you still have a good line of sight. Next, the restroom is at 3 o'clock at the booth, and if you've watched that episode, the Men's restroom is not where it is in the show. That is the Women's restroom; I almost made that mistake. Still, the space between the restroom and the Soprano's booth is small--I measured it at five feet. When you exit the restroom, it becomes self-evident that Members Only would have a perfect opportunity where Tony sits because the first thing you see is Tony's side of the booth. He would have been oblivious since I didn't notice who was coming out until they swung in front of me. Also, don't hesitate to purchase chocolates and other sweets. We made sure to pick up several bags after we finished our lunch. Holsten's is filled with plenty of comfort foods and desserts. As for the staff, everyone was hospitable and smiled often, and the restaurant was clean, too. Zero issues. I don't know why they automatically knew we were fans of the TV show, but they knew. My pulling out a measuring tape may have something to do with it, but I'm unsure. You have to parallel park, but it didn't take me three attempts if I can with an SUV. There were plenty of spaces, but it was lunchtime; I suspect dinner might be more challenging to find an open spot. The table had a little tabletop jukebox, which didn't work. LOL, it was all part of the show. When my family was growing up in the 1950s-1970s, those jukebox boxes played the front and back of 45rpm records. Some of the songs on that particular jukebox were "I'm Alive," "Only the Strong Survive," and "Turn, Turn, Turn." Oddly enough, the jukebox did not have "Don't Stop Believin," it was the only booth with a jukebox; again, it was only included for the final Soprano episode.

Came here after a late dinner and this place is one of the only dessert places open late around the area. I don't think they were too happy when my friend and I came in since they were cleaning up and ready to close. But they served us with a smile and were patient with me since it was my first time coming in. I'm glad I found this place. Once you walk in, it has an old school ice cream parlor vibe. They have counter seats and dine in area in the back with a candy shop as well. I got the hot fudge sundae ($7 - small) with vanilla ice cream. It was solid, no pun intended, and the hot fudge was really good. Homemade everything. I noticed they also serve food so I'll def have to try that out when I'm around the area again. I highly recommend this spot if you want ice cream especially late at night. * street parking

It's a Jersey thing, if you're not a fan of ice cream or the final episode of the Sopranos series, you wouldn't understand but IYKYK. OH yeah, the ingredients are fresh and the people who work there are fabulous. Last time I had a scoop of Cherry vanilla and it was full of pieces of real cherries. They really spoil you here.

This is not by design like one of the newer established 50's chains like Johnny Rockets or Smash Burger, but because it has always been that way, it is the Real Deal in every respect. The prices are also remarkably cheap, and while there only are about a dozen or so varieties of ice cream, all of them are made in-house and are very fresh. PS: This fine establishment happened to be the spot in which The Sopranos' series finale was filmed. Epic moment in TV history. Cheers

Holsten's invites you to a blast from the past, with buzzing cash registers, loud laughs and bright smiles. This place has quick service and has that authentic all American style. My friends and I visited for the memorabilia of the great Sopranos. The wait wasn't long at all and the food/ice cream was delicious. I'll be dreaming of the hot fudge walnut sundae. If you're a sopranos fan, what are you doing not getting the onion rings??
