I spent some time looking for something to eat for breakfast at the airport. Coffee shop: muffins. Coffee shop: bagels and muffins. McDonalds: well, you know what they have. I walked right by Hockeytown Cafe, thinking, "It's 7:45 in the morning: I don't want a beer." But, I came back because I saw people eating. Was it just bar food, or did they have breakfast? They did! Omelets, hash browns, breakfast sandwiches, breakfast wraps, with choices of bacon, sausage, and different cheeses. Best of all, the food is freshly prepared. And, it's fast: they know you have a flight to catch. My breakfast wrap was bacon and cheddar, with fluffy (but under salted) eggs and a fair amount of bacon and cheese. There's a lot of food here for $9 (for an airport, the price isn't bad). I could have split it with someone and both of us would have been satisfied....but it was so good that I ate the whole thing. I got a Bloody Mary (yeah, I remember what I said about not wanting a beer, but this is different because it's breakfast...right?) which was more like tomato juice: not at all spicy. It was the only decent place to get some beer and food in that area of DTW close to our departure gate so we found a good spot and ordered. I was impressed with the PATTY MELT. It was a basic sandwich but it was super tasty and not salty at all. It was sinfully good with all the buttery taste. I came here wanting a drink and a snack before my flight, and given that the entire theme of my trip to Detroit was celebrating the last couple of games at the JLA, HockeyTown Cafe seemed fitting. My cider was only $6.50, which is pretty good for a bottle in an airport. The hubby got a pint of Blue Moon and it was $10.25, but after paying concession stand beer prices all weekend that didn't seem too outrageous. We also got an order of Olympia Nachos, which were standard mass-produced tortilla chips covered in what I assume was a crumbled up hamburger instead of ground beef, along with the usual toppings - cheese, tomato, jalapenos, salsa. It wasn't gourmet by any means but it paired well with the drinks, and we left the bar ready to spend the next 2 hours on a plane. read more

Mixed report on this visit to the airport version of the Detroit icon. Service was quick and just attentive enough. Prices were surprisingly reasonable & the beer I chose, Latitude 42's I.P. Eh was perfect. The wings, called "Red Wings" were highly disappointing. Dry and overcooked, the hot sauce made them edible. Needed to grab a quick bite & drink before a flight so we ducked in here due to it's proximity to our gate. Big mistake. First glance around the restaurant should have been warning enough- it was filthy. Dirty tables, some with discarded meals still. Not one table looked clean and organized. We choose a high top that had crumbs everywhere and a discarded condiment lid still on it, it was our best option. There was a pile of dirty glasses and empty beer glasses at corner of the bar, too. I heard one employee yelling about trash needing to be emptied. Our server was very nice and personable. Not sure if she was only one for the whole restaurant or not. It did take a little for her to get to our table, there was only 3 other tables in the place. Took our drink and food order at her first visit and everything came out at a decent pace. The drink options are fine, nothing super impressive. Friend got a double bloody Mary ( for $17, ridiculous) and couldn't even taste booze. I got beer because, it's a safe bet lol but still expensive. I order nachos, so hugely disappointed. They were pathetic. Pile of chips with lettuce and jalapeno tossed on top. ONE chip was completely covered in cheese and meat... That's it. A handful of others has a piece of cheese. Salsa and sour cream came in tiny cups w lids. Like, I could have gotten better at a gas station. Another friend got a quesadilla. Tiny and not exciting looking, but she said it tasted okay. Two friends split turkey burger and fries... Said it was okay. Nothing exciting. I would recommend skipping this place, as food isn't good, drinks are way expensive, and it isn't clean! read more

We sat down, were given our drinks only to be told after getting the drinks that the waitresses are working the kitchen so there likely wouldn't be food. We were tempted to leave the drinks and go but then we were told that they could try to make our food. We decided to stay because we were so hungry and had drinks in front of us. Appetizers, salads, and entrees were being served on PLASTIC PLATES. Wine glasses were not fully clean when we received them. There is no hockey on at this Hockeytown. This place is pretty pathetic. We stopped in for some lunch/dinner before our flight to Colorado and posted up at the bar. While the bartender was friendly and attentive I cannot look past food quality and the prices. First off, why do they not have beer and liquor prices on the menu? I feel like that's really deceiving. They don't have many draft options, but I was able to find something I liked and got the 22oz. So, that was good. We ordered the spinach and artichoke dip and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it. Lukewarm, sad dip of a 1/2 cup portion in some plastic container alongside stale bagged chips. For $9 people...$9. I know airport food and drinks are on the expensive side, but there's way too much competition to justify eating here. read more

Flies and other flying insects are everywhere. My food was served with insects literally crawling on it and this was treated as normal. There are fingerprints on the glassware. Although there are TV screens, and this is an ostensibly a Redwings focused bar, the screens are all playing a screensaver of classic rock song titles that are not at all audible. The beer is drinkable and that alone makes it superior to waiting at the gate, but if I had any other option at all I wouldn't be here. There is a fly crawling on my phone as I write this. Huge mistake eating here! I wanted a quiet bar/ restaurant to grab a beer and a bite to eat. This was the least busiest restaurant at DTW airport so I decided to sit down. After I ate the slop they served i understand why they were slow. I ordered the beef nachos that were served with the bottom of the bag of chips that were all broken and crumbs. The quality of these nachos were less quality than you would actually get at a Red Wing game. Truly was disappointing and I'm amazed they're able to stay open. When he finally helped me he told me they only had a couple options (chicken tenders and something else) so I ordered the chicken tenders. I then overheard him talking to the waitress a few minutes later about how he just didn't want to deal with serving other things so he was telling people they didn't have it. He also was not allowing anyone to order at a certain point because they were closing in an hour (yes, an hour) and he was trying to close early. Mind you, I think they close at 8 or 9 pm so it's not like it's a late night for them. There was a full restaurant and he was limiting orders and then just not taking them. Walked in for lunch and some beers. Grabbed stools at the bar and were greeted with drink and food menus. 24oz Two Hearted for $6 was a damn good deal. Most appetizers are $7-9 and we ordered 3: Honey BBQ wings, mac&cheese bites, chicken tenders with fries. All three arrived hot and fresh from the kitchen, each was darn tasty for standard bar fare. Service was lackluster, the server was more interested in gossiping with coworkers and complaining about management and other co workers than doing their job. Food was very mediocre, the server mentioned the cook had no idea how to make breakfast. The food was also all served on plastic plates and with plastic utensils, not what I expected of a sit down restaurant. They didn't have milk, orange juice came in single serve bottles, just low quality all around. I tried to cash out and an employee to wait for a different server, I waited another 15 minutes and at the end when leaving I had to step between two employees to get cashed out. Planned to bring the gf here on the way back to Florida as I try to further inundate her with Red Wings stuff. There's really nothing about this place that is similar to the Hockeytown Cafe near the Fox Theater other than the decor. Didn't appear to be the same food or anything like that. Really not a huge deal. Kerri was our server and she was very prompt and friendly. Both of us had the Hockeytown Burger and enjoyed it, though it was your standard burger for the most part. Nothing too fancy. Even with the $1 and $2.25 upcharge to add fries and onion rings, respectively, our bill was still only about $30. This is including drinks, and that's extremely affordable for an airport terminal restaurant. Would definitely come here again, though I will probably either fly Delta to DTW (other terminal) or Southwest to FNT on my next trip home. read more

I wouldnt usually write a review for an airport restaraunt but the service here was so irritating I felt compelled to warn others. If you're in this terminal, youre better off getting a premade sandwich at the the coffee shop. Sit down a wait a few minutes. He walks right past me and goes to other tables. If you're busy thats fine, but acknowledge that Im here and say I'll be right with you. Youre in your late 30s, Im sure common courtesy isn't beyond you. Also know that we're in an airport, meaning things are more time sensitive. After waiting a few minutes I went up to the bar tender and asked if I could put in an order of chicken tenders. She said my server would be right with me and I explained that I had been waiting for a few minutes without any interaction (its small, maybe 7 tables total) and didnt have alot of time. He comes over defending himself and telling me that he saw me talking to the man next to me. Nope. Dont know him, wasnt talking to him. Next- so you want an order of chicken fingers? Me- yes please. Him- And? Me- And a water please. He comes back with a mini to go cup of water and a straw. Um do you want a tip? Am I in mcdonalds?You realize im going to drink this in 3-5 minutes.... Chicken fingers arrive. He says 'I brought you bbq' would you like ranch or honey mustard? What I would like is for you to ask me what I would like with my chicken fingers during my order without you rushing off. He grabs a ranch at my request that is in a salad dressing package and tosses it at me onto the table. Amongst other small things that I am leaving unmentioned I am now pretty irritated. The guy next to me leaves and I took a peak at his bill to see if his tip communicated any frustration as well. Tab was $28.50 and he left the guy $2, less than 10%.
