The vibe of this place has always been awesome. The decor and service is what I want and expect from a traditional style omakase seating experience. Hiroki was definitely incredible when it opened back in 2019. I have been a few times since then, and each time seems to have gotten slightly worse in terms of food quality and creativeness. The mandatory 20% service charge on top of the server telling you that they get none of it is kind of absurd. Be prepared to add at least an additional 30-40% on top of your final bill. Still a good meal, I just think there are other options more worth checking out at this point.

Amazing experience! Kind of confusing on what the options are available, for both food and drinks. There are a lot of sake options, including a beverage pairing for omakase (~7 drinks for the course). Omakase itself was fantastic. The server was nice, and had an amazing experience.

We had a wonderful experience. It's a very unique dinner. The space is beautiful and intimate. The service was excellent and the food was delicious.

An impressive omakase. While the zensai (small bite, appetizer) was a little on the strange side (think jelly fish, a poached egg, and fried tofu, everything else we experienced was sensational. The grilled black cod was so flavorful. The personal stone grilled wagyu was a "play with your food" moment and absolutely delicious. The 12-course sushi course is really what you're here for though. The quality, the melt in your mouth flavors, traditionally served (wasabi between the fish and rice and no soy sauce), it was nothing less than sensational. Highly recommend the sake tasting. Many unique types and perfectly balanced and paired with the various courses. I can't end without saying the staff. Thoughtful, knowledgeable, kind. They made this experience what it was. Can't wait to come back!

This is the worst omakase I have ever had. I was visiting Philadelphia. In NYC there are omakase less then 1/2 the price that are way better. One of the chef was amateur, the rice was falling apart. The scallop he made for me was way different than the other chefs. The pic with one piece was the scallop he made for me. The other pic with multiple scallop sushi pieces was made by the other chef for the other guests. This is unacceptable how the head chef would allow this. The Aji sushi tasted very fishy that I wanted the spit out the piece, the worse piece of sushi I've had at any omakase I've been to. Would not recommend this place to anyone. They also requested tip when they already charged 20% service fee. Prior to entering they said tip was not required because of the 20% service fee. This is also written on resys when I made the reservation.

First time back this year and left disappointed and hungry. Subpar ingredients that did not taste fresh or nuanced. Zensai was bland. Ginger was old and soggy. Waygu was overcooked and tough. Sushi came apart from rice to what amounted to a crumbly sushi-a first. Fruit tart had strawberry that was overripe. Nothing stood out as extraordinary. Just generic. This was an elegant ambiance in an intimate setting. The detail and pride in each dish was evident. The omakase was expertly thought out and a pleasure to partake. But that is all in the past. As mine was the first rave review on yelp upon hiroki's opening, and one that enjoyed chef Hiroki in action many times hence, I now leave this with definite sense of closure. It's a shame this costly experience ($450 for 2) no longer warrants it or any consideration. Stay away.

Hiroki. Wow. A must-try experience in Philadelphia for any fan of excellent Japanese cuisine. I first heard of Hiroki from a co-worker who loved it so much, she's been multiple times. We snagged reservations in between my husband accepting a new job and graduating with his PhD, so we had a lot to celebrate. There are limited seatings each evening, so a spot is coveted but oh so worth it. The restaurant is pretty hidden in Fishtown, but once you find the subtle wood door, you're greeted by a host/hostess who escorts you to a seat at the sushi counter to start the experience. Even from entering the doors, we knew it was going to be memorable night. The interior is dark & moody with minimalist vibes, allowing your attention to be on the food and experience. The staff was extremely receptive (I dropped a chop stick and had a new one in less than 1 minute) and respectful (giving us time to savor each plate). Watching the chefs in real time was amazing too, as you could tell the passion and skill they possessed. As an omakase, the menu is pre-selected and presented to you on a card to guide you through each of the 20 courses. Every dish brought to us was plated so beautifully and with such attentive detail. The quality of the dishes was outstanding, and this was certainly the finest sushi I have ever had, not only in just Philadelphia. We loved walking through the menu starting with zensai (favorite was the onsen tamago with the poached egg yolk) to the sashimi, small plates (LOVED the black cod), nigiri, sushi (toro handroll was a standout), and dessert (the mango custard was the perfect ending), feeling like we had the fullest of experiences. Their is an optional sake pairing, which we opted for and I 10/10 would recommend - it was a great way to experience each dish with another flavor profile and expose us to the varietals of sake. We are still talking about our Hiroki experience now months later, and we highly recommend it to all our friends as the finest way to omakase in Philadelphia. While it is not a "cheap" meal by any means, it is 100% worth the price tag for the quality and quantity of freshly prepared dishes and for the overall vibe. Truly a memorable dining experience in the city. We would be honored to dine at Hiroki again, and we are already looking forward to scoring a coveted reservation for the next special occasion. Thank you for the wonderful meal, Hiroki!

This is a special experience! Admittedly, this was my first omakase experience, and I was completely blown away. I've seen other reviews from people who are more familiar with this type of cuisine/dining style who seemed to have completely different opinions. That said, if this is your first time, I would highly recommend. It is quite an enchanting start to finish. There feels like a bit of mystery as you wonder down the side alley way in Fishtown, to be immediately met with this beautiful large wooden round door (you cannot miss it). As we stepped inside, we were greeted by a very nice host who had us seated pretty quickly. A lot of dark and rich tones/textures in the restaurant - it is very cozy and relaxing. We sat at the bar itself, which in my opinion, is way more worth it than sitting at a table. If you can request it, do it, because you have a front row seat to all the action. Each seat practically has its own "picture perfect" lighting (which you will see in my shared photos) and you'll want to have the camera ready with how beautiful each plating is. I will say, this is an expensive meal, so we passed on the sake pairing, but if i have a chance to go back, I definitely would consider it. Really hard to nit-pick anything from start to finish. You kick off the meal with a warm towel and are swept away by the appetizers & sashimi. My favorite bite may have been the marinated poached egg yolk, but hands down most interesting bie was the fried river crab. This was super adventurous, so you do have to be open minded with these dishes (we also tried jellyfish for the first time!) I thought all of the fish was superb - fresh, clean, and well paired in their respective dishes. Don't overlook the Misuji Nikomi, which was the wagyu flat iron with red miso glaze - delicious! My favorite sushi bite was the Toro, which was fatty bluefin tuna...it literally just melted in my mouth. As I said before, you are laying down a big check on this, and while each individual plating is rather small, you do get nearly 20 platings. I am a BIG eater, and still left feeling content with the total amount, and felt like pricing was fair. At the end of the day, I feel obligated to give it a 4 star because they offer zero flexibility for vegetarians. Now I get it, if you are planning to go here, you can't miss the fact that they don't make accommodations, so it is not necessarily a surprise factor. However, this is a place I know my wife would love (service, atmosphere, etc.) but she will never get a chance to visit because of it. It's a shame, because this is a place that I feel like everyone should experience, but until that changes, it feels very limiting for all folks to give it a shot.

Hate to make it about the money but when you're the one of the most expensive Omakase experiences in Philly, it's hard not to. $150pp gets you roughly 20 "courses" aka bites. The first 6 were awesome, composed, thoughtful culinary driven bites. 10/10. Wagyu to poached eggs to some of the best fish I've ever had. The following 7-8 sushi bites felt like an after thought compared to the first courses. You'd have to reeeaally care and have a pristine pallet to differentiate between the cuts of fish to appreciate what the purpose of showcasing them so so simply. All were done over a pad of rice. Nothing more/less. Classic and authentic sure, but not very memorable. Again, I get the point of this, it's sushi true to form. How "they" do it, yep got it. But when your check is $455 for two, I feel the need to evaluate the experience from a value standpoint. I'd almost wish the sushi and composed dishes had been flipped in the way of order, would've helped me forget how uneventful they were. In traditional American style Omakase fashion, we felt like we needed to fly through the courses. The 2 person wait staff was quick to nudge you along. They even made an off color comment to us about the other guests taking it slow when we jokingly asked if we were rushing. One last comment- AVOID the sparkling water when asked..it's $38 and not noted as such on any part of the menu. As far as the other drinks (only sake, and a single bottled beer) go, expect to need the same amount of knowledge/intrigue as the prices of the sake bottles are all at least or more than $100. Very pricey altogether.

We loved our meal at Hiroki - it was a wonderful celebration meal (we went on NYE). It was absolutely sensational and not a meal I will forget anytime soon! The people who are saying in other reviews that it's not outstanding... it's just very unclear how you would get that impression. The fish tasted incredibly fresh to us. Every bite was so delicious! I highly recommend trying to get a spot at the sushi counter - it will still be fun in the dining room (just behind the sushi counter, it is a small place) but it is fun to watch the preparation and have the sushi chef pass you the dishes directly. I couldn't believe we were in Philly, you are really transported as soon as you walk in - an unforgettable evening! Just for reference, 20% gratuity is included in your bill. For two, with two glasses of sake, it was around $450.00 so $$$$ but a very special meal, and I think it was worth it for the experience.

My boyfriend and I had such an amazing experience at Hiroki. Everything from the ambiance to the presentation of each dish to the taste was phenomenal. I had omakase before but Hiroki was such a different experience that was just so much more enjoyable. We also got a bottle of sake which paired so nicely with each piece. Definitely come stop by if you're ever feeling fancy and want a full Japanese style omakase experience!

For our 26th anniversary dinner, we went to Hiroki and we were ECSTATIC at how wonderful it all was from the ambiance to the settings and dishware to the exquisite food and perfect sake pairings. The Chef's 20-piece omakase is on the menu for two seating times a night and we had the first from 6:00-7:45. Time slowed and we were professionally served, ate amazing food prepared in front of us washed down with expertly paired sake and for the time were in Hiroki's demesne; life was happy, delicious and sublime - it was almost like a trip to Japan as the majority of the ingredients are sourced from all over Japan. The taste difference is monumental. I am not a sushi-eater in the US, I have had sushi in two other places out of Japan, one in Canada and the other in NYC. Hiroki is the third place I've had sushi outside of Japan and it is the one I would like to return to as much as possible. I loved it. The sushi was incredible, wonderful and every dish was better than the last. extremely delicious and perfectly prepared and presented. 宏樹 さん の寿司はすごかった、素晴らしく、すべての料理は前回よりも良かった。 非常に繊細で完璧に準備され、提示されています。 https://hirokisan.com/

literally best vegetarian / vegan sushi in the city…read more okay to start, if your friend/date/family member is vegetarian or vegan, take them here. you both will have options. inside is cozy. service is really thorough and like a well oiled machine. for the vegetarians: The lime sinko roll is a classic avocado cucumber roll with a pickled vegetable layer on top and a thin slice of lime. the roll itself is great, simple, and a classic. my sister really likes the pickled vegetable and lime on top. I however, just peel it off. it's good but I prefer without it. the veggie on fire is what you need: probably their best roll on the menu. it's a cucumber avocado roll with a spicy zucchini sauce on top and crispy fried onions. it's messy. it's spicy. it's delicious. the sauce is orange in color, has tiny slivers of zucchini in it. I was hesitant to try it at first, but it's my favorite roll now. the vegan tuna roll: it's marinated tomato in place of tuna. i've never had fish or tuna, but it definitely tastes a lot more fishy. I guess that's the marinade. texture is kinda slimy? mushy? I feel like this might be the roll for someone who liked the taste of fish but went vegan and wants a replica. Not for me, but well made nonetheless. Appetizers The veggie gyoza: the gyoza itself is green, doesn't taste different to a non green dough, but visually that might matter to some people. sauce they serve on the side is very good. comes with a lot, at least 6 I think. tastes good. I don't recall any mushrooms in it and if there is they are not noticeable as i'm not the biggest fan of mushrooms. The Spring rolls: new to the menu, no meat, interesting? they are more soft inside than expected. not a lot of veggies. tiny. cute little app to share and try. they come with two. no mushrooms. I typically prefer a more veggie heavy and crispy spring roll but i'd order them again! Samosa: currently off the menu I think, but in case they add it back, this was very good. i'd order this over the spring rolls. they were crispier and I think it came with three. Miso Soup: it's a fine little bowl of miso. I typically always order miso at every Japanese restaurant to start my meal. i'm not picky about miso, but I will say, it's not my favorite miso. I still order it every time, just not the absolute best i've had. It has small little tofu chunks and some green leafs which I find are in most misos but I have no idea what they are. small little bowl. perfect to order first. edamame: very good I always order in the beginning and I have a bad habit of also ordering another for dessert. the veggie bun: I don't like mushrooms, but if you do you will love this. my sister loves it. it's not often there is a vegetarian option for a bun, so i'd get it. the sauce on it is very good. comes with two. Karaage: This is chicken, but my dad gets it and it looks very good and crispy. if I ate meat i'd order this. avocado salad: okay so the ginger dressing is a little different than typical ginger dressing which I like. it's unique and very good. the amount of avocado is amazing! it has to be a whole avocado. always fresh. the green leafs are a little big, so this can get messy fast if you're on a date and trying to be demure. this is a must order for three people in my family. every time we go it's three orders clock work. I tried sharing with my sister and we determined we cannot share this. honestly bigger than I expected and more filling than I expected. has some cut up tomato's and cucumbers inside as well. mochi: must get. one order is one mochi cut in half. so two people could share one mochi order. i'm team chocolate, but I heard strawberry is good. I think I tried all of their flavors but honestly can't remember them. I'll update as I try more of the vegetarian/vegan rolls

Located in the heart of Old…read moreCity, you're welcomed into an intimate 12-person counter with a small seating area in the front. While there isn't a formal coat check, there are designated racks where you can store clothing and belongings. The restaurant shares a space with Almanac, its upstairs cocktail bar. Despite being catered as a social atmosphere, I never felt that its presence (or playlist) disrupted my dining experience. There's service staff moving about the stairwell behind the Ogawa counter, but I felt you can still clearly hear and immerse yourself with the chefs during the meal. I visited with my partner for their Midweek Omakase Experience, which provides an abridged four set, 16-course meal perfect for a date night. This particularly stood out to me, since it's a $250-per couple offering that makes it more affordable and welcoming for veteran diners or first-time omakase enjoyers. The Food Breakdown: First Set (4.5/5) - The appetizer dishes were a great start to our meal. I thoroughly enjoyed the selections of cuts with the pickles on the second plate. The scallop was also seasoned incredibly well, and the brush of soy helped elevate each bite. Second Set (5/5) - Flavors from the chawanmushi helped warm the palette, especially with the chutoro of the bluefin tuna presented in this course. I felt that this set had the greater diversity of textures between bites, which made savoring it more worthwhile. Third Set (4/5) - Miso soup was a great start before we were served delicious otoro cuts of fish. The portion sizes were also excellent, and Chef Andy did a fantastic job describing each bite in full detail. My only note was that I felt the handroll sizes were very slightly inconsistent in their filling. Fourth Set (5/5) - All of the desserts were delicious and light, which made for an excellent closer to the meal. While traditionally omakase ends with a tamago-style dessert, we were also provided a vanilla ice cream and homemade chocolate to round out our experience. Chef Andy was welcoming, knowledgeable at every step of our meal, and demonstrated a clear passion in his preparation of each bite. It was a great and affordable experience for an omakase!

He was interactive, friendly, and clearly passionate about his craft. He personally introduced each of the 17 courses, explaining the ingredients, preparation, and flavors behind every piece. His attention to detail and enthusiasm added so much to the evening. Our server was also fantastic. She was warm, attentive, and made sure we were comfortable throughout the entire meal. One of my boy did not like the home made root beer and he just voiced that to me. Chef Andy call her over and they switched him to another drink, which was very nice. The combination of great service at the table and Chef Andy's guided presentation made the experience feel truly immersive. The omakase itself was phenomenal. The fish was incredibly fresh, the progression of courses was thoughtful, and every bite was memorable. It felt like a culinary journey from start to finish, with each course building perfectly on the last. Overall, this was an exceptional omakase experience and easily one of the best we've had in the States. Amazing food, great service, and a welcoming atmosphere. We will definitely be back.

We were seated at the sushi bar, which ended up being one of the best parts of the night. We got to watch the sushi chefs prepare dishes up close and even chat with them a bit, which made the experience feel more personal and fun. I would recommend requesting this if you are a party of one or two. The restaurant itself has a very clean, sleek look, with mostly white decor. It feels modern and upscale without being cold. The space is large enough that it doesn't feel crowded, but still intimate enough for a nice dinner. Our server was fantastic and gave great recommendations for cocktails, sake, and dishes. I tried a sake flight and ended up not enjoying it, and he kindly brought me something else with no issue and didn't charge for the flight, which I really appreciated. The sushi was fresh, and every dish we had was seasoned perfectly. They have seasonal tasting menus if you are more adventurous. The dishes are beautifully plated. Overall, this was a great experience and I'd definitely recommend Morimoto for a higher-end dinner in Philly, especially if you're a fan of TV chefs or just want a memorable sushi experience.

That being said, it was expensive for what it was. We came in a large group, some of them being particularly excited that they offered gluten free ramen. However, I don't think any of us expected to pay what we did. Philly is a city with SO many food options, so if I want good food at a cheaper price, I think I'd pass on Morimoto again. Side note. Very interesting lighting fixtures at the tables.

The first impression was not especially auspicious. The restaurant is tucked away in the basement beneath a building on Walnut Street in Philadelphia, and at first glance the menu prices gave me pause. But from the very first bite, every doubt completely disappeared. The sushi was absolutely extraordinary -- some of the best I have ever had anywhere. I ordered the 9-piece tasting menu with uni for $68, and every single piece of nigiri was exquisite. The fish practically melted in my mouth, with outstanding freshness, texture, and flavor. Each bite felt carefully crafted and perfectly balanced. The service was equally impressive. The staff was warm, cheerful, attentive, and made the entire experience feel welcoming and relaxed. I arrived toward the end of the evening, so the restaurant was pleasantly quiet, which made the meal even more enjoyable. This was truly a memorable dining experience. Every course was exceptional, and I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who appreciates outstanding sushi. My only regret is that it is so far from where I live, because otherwise I would return again and again.
