Disclaimer: I want to apologize to the readers who will be fooled by my one star, I would have picked no star if I could. I rather high school provided lunch than this stuff.
I am some what confused about this place. I read some good reviews about this place and thought that I should take my family here to visit. What a serious mistake! It took them 20 minutes to take our order. Now I don't know how people do things in this restaurant (actually now I know since I experienced it), but in other establishments the customers usually get some iced water, hot tea, or get asked if they want any soda. We did not get any of that, I was confused at first but then I asked them to bring us some water and hot tea. It took them 10 minutes to bring us the water and tea...my water didn't even have ice, but it had something else...hair. I immediately told them to change that and bring me a new glass of water. So while I sip my glass that is free of hair and other outside pollutants, I was looking around and realized there was only 2 tables occupied...SO WHY HAVE THEY NOT BRING OUT OUR FOOD YET?! It was another 15 minutes before they brought out my order of Dan Dan Noodle (or more appropriately not spicy noodles with ginger and maybe some meat), my grandmother got a beef noodle soup, my parents got some noodle dishs, and lastly my sister got her Vietnamese spring roll.
1. Dan Dan noodle does not have ginger, and it is suppose to be spicy...it had too much ginger and is about as spicy as sugar.
2. My grandmother had a fly in it (Apparently I won the "get stuff in your food" lottery)
3. My dad thought his noodles were alright, but he could have gotten better in NYC.
4. My mom took a bite of her noodles and refused to eat more.
5. My sister ate her Vietnamese spring rolls...well they are that in name only, it was more like Vietnamese rice wrapper around lettuce. There were three rolls, but two had shrimps and one had just lettuce and noodles.
So it's pretty obvious that we were still hungry after barely touching our food. We asked for the check so we can go somewhere else. Well it took them 10 more minutes to do that. When I looked at the receipt, I saw they already took the liberty to add a 15% tip. So I got up and asked for the owner of the place so I can complain, however the owner was not there so I talked to the "manager" and I told her that the service was terrible, the food had bugs and hair and I have no desire to give them a single dollar of tip. Further more, I told her I was confused why they had the audacity to put the tip on there. She said "Oh we charge people when there is a group of more than five." (those are her exact words) I was actually confused a bit because I have no idea where the one extra person came from since my group had FIVE PEOPLE! NOT SIX, NOT FOUR, BUT FIVE! So I told her that I had five people and not more, and she responded "yes we charge for groups of more than five". At that point I wanted to actually slap her for her idiocy, but I kept my cool and was like, yea listen I am not paying you anything so take that off or I am just bouncing and not paying a dime. She finally agreed to take the tip off but as she does it, she rolled her eyes at me, and as she was redoing the check she started to loudly say my orders in a mocking way. I really really wanted to flip out on her at this point, but as a guy it would not have been appropriate. So I just paid whatever new amount and I took my family out of that failure hell hole of a restaurant.
Afterward I just took them to another place and the food was better.
So summary:
1. Terrible food
2. Terrible food and drinks infested with bugs and hair
3. Terrible service
4. Rude manager
5. The Chicago Sanitation people need to come here and inspect the place.
Conclusion: I rather eat Mcdonalds than at Hing Kee. read more
