This is a solid neighborhood Thai restaurant. We got take out one evening and really enjoyed our meal. We had the pad see ew with chicken and green curry with chicken. The flavors were spot on! I think the thing that struck me most was how 'clean' the food felt. It didn't feel as greasy as other Thai restaurants. There was a lot of chicken in both dishes and the chicken was cut really nicely without any weird or questionably pieces....you know what I mean. Ordered here for the first time today. The boat noodles are pretty good. In my haste to remind them not to add beansprouts, I forgot to tell them not to cook the noodles. Totally my fault! The noodles were delivered to me via DoorDash and by the time I received it, the noodles have harden together. I reheated the broth to ensure maximum temperature to try and break down the noodle clumps, but was unsuccessful but otherwise, it's very good! read more

FYI, this location is cash only but does have an ATM inside. I heard good things about this location - and as a big fan of boat noodles, I was excited to have some. We came here at around 8pm on Friday evening, about 1.5 hours before closing - though they were already starting to wrap up. It's possible that the food quality may have been affected by this fact - I just wanted to mention this caveat. I ordered the boat noodles and found myself very disappointed. The noodles were overcooked, forming an almost gelatinous texture that became way too mushy to really enjoy. They added a lot of these noodles as well - which normally would be great but when it's a giant blob mush... wasn't a super fun eating experience. As a result of these overcooked noodles, I didn't feel like there was a whole lot of broth - and the broth itself felt more oily than anything else. Boat noodle broth usually has a super rich texture - and that was a texture I found lacking here. On the positive, the portion itself is very generous: I found there was plenty of noodles and meat in the broth. Had the noodles been cooked correctly, I think it would've been excellent. It's very possible that the restaurant at 6pm on a Friday could've done a much better job and not overcooked the noodles. I understand that 8pm on Friday is on the later side, but it's not egregiously late for a Friday evening IMO. I did a online order from here. The pickup process was painless and straight forward. My order was completed before the promised time online. The food is a little on the pricey side for the amount of food you actually get. I ordered their Chicken Satay, Pad See Eiw with chicken and their Pad Kee Mao w/ beef. The containers seemed a little small. Although the dishes were filling, I'm used to halving a lot left over. The chicken stay was good. Both noodle dishes were good. I like to order my Pad Kee Mao very spicy and they didn't made sure that happened. The only thing my dish was missing was some texture and color. During a stressful week, I noticed this restaurant while completing an errand. Deciding to give myself a break on cooking dinner, I opted for take out. Noodles are comfort food - especially Thai food. Glancing at the menu, I chose Pad See-ew. What really drew me to this dish & sets it apart? The greens used instead of broccoli. This place Pad See-ews! Upon entering, I learned it's cash only however, you can scan a QR code & order online to pay with card. ETA was quoted at 10 minutes but it was much quicker than that. It's a small place but clean & cozy. Service was quick & friendly. After arriving home & tucking into my food, I was not disappointed. The slight bitterness of the greens balances the sweet & salty flavors of the rest of the dish. Perfection for dinner & a good way to end a less than stellar day. Probably one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the city! I came here for the first time and was blown away by how delicious the food was and how attentive service was. I met the owner and he was so kind and welcoming. We tried a variety of dishes but my favorite were the crab Rangoon and pineapple shrimp curry. They are also the only restaurant to serve this unique noodle dish (aroy noodles), which are rice noodles with a delicious bbq pork sauce. Heads up they are also cash only. I ordered the crab rangoon, beef salad and pad see eiw. I probably would only recommend the beef salad as the pad see eiw lacked flavor and the crab rangoon was more like a vegetable rangoon with carrots and I think celery. Delivery ended up taking 90 minutes on a Wednesday. I ordered the Kow Soy (my Thai barometer) which came in two boxes. A couple minutes later after assembly, I took my first bite and was immediately impressed. The curry was still warm and had that peanut flavor I was craving. A good amount of chicken dispersed throughout too. Lastly, soft egg noodles that soaked up the curry and then plenty of onions, cilantro, and crispy noodles on top. I've been looking for an excellent Thai restaurant in Lincoln Square or Rogers Park. Aroy serves excellent Pad Thai. I had it with shrimp and my wife had it with chicken. The menu is large and has something for everyone. A few notes: -they accept reservations and seating is limited -they are cash-only, so hit that ATM before you go -spice levels are high here; we ordered our dishes "medium" and we couldn't finish them due to the heat (but they were delicious) We got somtum (green papaya salad) to share and it was easily the best I've had. Coming to this quaint spot right next to the brown line, I used to frequent this place as a younger adult. Some things have changed but the food and quality of each dish was memorable. After ordering we realized that this is a BYOB so we asked for the order to stall for 10 minutes while we ran out for a sixer. Right when we returned the food was just arriving to the table and timing was perfect. Our waitress was super nice and friendly and the owner chatted us up a moment while he was heading out for ingredients. He even mentioned a more traditional Thai menu for my next visit. Being raised in Thailand and being exposed to the quality dishes back home, it is difficult to find a Thai restaurant in the states that doesn't just rely on boring Pad Thai and bland curries. Still solid after years and years. A true neighborhood gem. Shortly after my last review many years ago, they reorganized their menu following a feature on Check Please. Not much changed, except that their menu no longer has the bright photos I mentioned in my last review. Also, some items no one ever ordered were eliminated for a more streamlined menu - RIP my beloved raw shrimp salad. HOWEVER, you can still order the raw shrimp salad. Or try, at least. They always have the ingredients, but I've been told by friends that they've been turned down. I dunno. In that case, the grilled pork neck salad is just as good. Even after we moved away from Chicago, we still came to Aroy whenever we came to town. It's been exactly the same over the years - the most impressive thing is that the quality has not declined. Only when we moved away did we realized how much we took a restaurant like Aroy for granted. The more "typical" Thai-American dishes are good, but the more regional Isaan-style offerings are much better. Do the dishes still skew slightly sweet occasionally? Yes. But that's sort of what you get in a homey environment. And most of the time, the sweetness isn't a problem. Recently (last week), they were cash only for dine-in. But you can order for pick up with card online. I really hope to find a place like Aroy in our next city, but those are big shoes to fill in my heart (and belly). read more

I think this was a hidden gem in Ravenswood. My friend took me to this Thai restaurant that was really really good. I would say the only thing to know before coming is that it's cash only. They do have an atm but if you want to avoid those fees then make sure you have cash. I got the shrimp shumai and it was a little over cooked but still pretty good. At first glance, I noticed that the pad Thai was super orange in color which is probably attributable to the amount of ketchup that was used. Hubby isn't picky and will eat almost anything and he noticed that there was a stronger ketchup flavor and wasn't as fond of this pad Thai as other ones he's had. This was a great BYOB Thai spot in Uptown. Though far from the city, the food was definitely tasty. Our service was very quick too. No corkage fee is always a plus as nowadays it seems like all good BYOB spots are charging fees.... We ordered the papaya salad, egg rolls, shrimp pad thai, and beef green curry.
