I had not been here in quite sometime and was pleased to find it better than when I last left it. In particular, I was really please to find that they now have outdoor seating. (Unfortunately, the sidewdalk is sloped, so the tables are sloped.) C and I order shumai, which in my experience, is served as an appetizer. Our order didn't arrive until after the main course was served. (Note to self: Next time order the main course after the appetizer has been served.) Cuisine: 4 stars - We ordered Basil Rice, to share. The flavor was different than what I have been served elsewhere. More sour than sweet. I think a better balance between sour and sweet would be better. Also, elsewhere, the rice and ground chicken are served tossed together. Here, the rice and chicken arrive on separate plates. It's difficult to mix sticky rice and chicken on a flat place. Nevertheless, the meal was completely acceptable; just a bit different. Service: 4 stars - The server was polite and friendly. Ambiance: 4 stars - We dined outside, but the interior looks nice. It's really nice to find a Thai restaurant with outdoor seating. What to know: It's BYOB (a plus) and does not accept card; only cash. For me, that's also a plus. Would I return? Yes. read more

Great authentic Thai food! Small space, so we recommend making reservations. Tom Kha was super, veggie rolls, chicken wings, crab rangoons were the best I ever had! Great location. Cash only but ATM inside. read more

FYI, this location is cash only but does have an ATM inside. I heard good things about this location - and as a big fan of boat noodles, I was excited to have some. We came here at around 8pm on Friday evening, about 1.5 hours before closing - though they were already starting to wrap up. It's possible that the food quality may have been affected by this fact - I just wanted to mention this caveat. I ordered the boat noodles and found myself very disappointed. The noodles were overcooked, forming an almost gelatinous texture that became way too mushy to really enjoy. They added a lot of these noodles as well - which normally would be great but when it's a giant blob mush... wasn't a super fun eating experience. As a result of these overcooked noodles, I didn't feel like there was a whole lot of broth - and the broth itself felt more oily than anything else. Boat noodle broth usually has a super rich texture - and that was a texture I found lacking here. On the positive, the portion itself is very generous: I found there was plenty of noodles and meat in the broth. Had the noodles been cooked correctly, I think it would've been excellent. It's very possible that the restaurant at 6pm on a Friday could've done a much better job and not overcooked the noodles. I understand that 8pm on Friday is on the later side, but it's not egregiously late for a Friday evening IMO. But As it is, I have to rate based on the food I received and I would not recommend. read more

This is a solid neighborhood Thai restaurant. We got take out one evening and really enjoyed our meal. We had the pad see ew with chicken and green curry with chicken. The flavors were spot on! I think the thing that struck me most was how 'clean' the food felt. It didn't feel as greasy as other Thai restaurants. There was a lot of chicken in both dishes and the chicken was cut really nicely without any weird or questionably pieces....you know what I mean. The portions were on the smaller side, but it was still plenty of food for two! read more

Ordered here for the first time today. The boat noodles are pretty good. In my haste to remind them not to add beansprouts, I forgot to tell them not to cook the noodles. Totally my fault! The noodles were delivered to me via DoorDash and by the time I received it, the noodles have harden together. I reheated the broth to ensure maximum temperature to try and break down the noodle clumps, but was unsuccessful but otherwise, it's very good! read more

Not a big fan of the general sour taste Crab Rangoon is ok. Pretty crispy. Grilled pork neck salad: way too sour for me. Meat is juicy though Bbq pork fried rice: a bit too sweet Sticky rice pad jeow: sticky rice is spicy and you cannot choose the spicy level. Pork is pretty good. Normal grilled flavor read more

I did a online order from here. The pickup process was painless and straight forward. My order was completed before the promised time online. The food is a little on the pricey side for the amount of food you actually get. I ordered their Chicken Satay, Pad See Eiw with chicken and their Pad Kee Mao w/ beef. The containers seemed a little small. Although the dishes were filling, I'm used to halving a lot left over. The chicken stay was good. Both noodle dishes were good. I like to order my Pad Kee Mao very spicy and they didn't made sure that happened. The only thing my dish was missing was some texture and color. Pas Kee Mao should come with carrots and peppers for some much needed crunch. Overall a decent meal, just not sure if I'd return anytime soon. read more

08/24/24 - Sunday night my wife and I went out for dinner. I had a craving for Thai food & wanted to try somewhere I had never eaten at before hence Aroy Thai @ 4654 N Damen Ave. The food was very good. We ordered 2 dishes to be shared family style. You can order the dishes in a 1-5 hotness rating w/1 being the least spicy & 5 being the spicest. Since my wife can't eat spicy food we ordered was level 1. * The first dish was the Pad Kee Mao stir fried wide rice noodles, w/beef ($1.50 extra), thai basil leaves, egg, collard greens, bean sprouts, bean sauce & a little pepper. We really enjoyed this dish. 5 stars * The second dish was Basil leaves, w/ground chicken, bell peppers, & mild hot peppers. Im not sure why I ordered this as I can make a better tasting Basil chicken garlic @ home. 3 stars Something to keep in mind is it's CASH ONLY. It's a good thing I keep cash in my wallet. Also the menu needs to be updated as the menu prices don't reflect the actual price (they did tell us before we ordered. read more

During a stressful week, I noticed this restaurant while completing an errand. Deciding to give myself a break on cooking dinner, I opted for take out. Noodles are comfort food - especially Thai food. Glancing at the menu, I chose Pad See-ew. What really drew me to this dish & sets it apart? The greens used instead of broccoli. This place Pad See-ews! Upon entering, I learned it's cash only however, you can scan a QR code & order online to pay with card. ETA was quoted at 10 minutes but it was much quicker than that. It's a small place but clean & cozy. Service was quick & friendly. After arriving home & tucking into my food, I was not disappointed. The slight bitterness of the greens balances the sweet & salty flavors of the rest of the dish. Perfection for dinner & a good way to end a less than stellar day. I will definitely be back as this is the best Pad See-ew I've ever had. Thanks Aroy! read more

Probably one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the city! I came here for the first time and was blown away by how delicious the food was and how attentive service was. I met the owner and he was so kind and welcoming. We tried a variety of dishes but my favorite were the crab Rangoon and pineapple shrimp curry. They are also the only restaurant to serve this unique noodle dish (aroy noodles), which are rice noodles with a delicious bbq pork sauce. Heads up they are also cash only. I can't wait to come back and try more things from their menu and also love how they have a lunch special. Since I don't live far, I'll have to give that a try sometime too. read more

Decent. Nothing fancy but does offer solid eats. A little small so I could see there being a wait if it's crowded. I went on a cold night so was pretty easy to get in. read more

Make sure that you bring cash to this place as if you dine in it is cash only. There was an atm in the back but it didn't really work when I was there. I ordered the crab rangoon, beef salad and pad see eiw. I probably would only recommend the beef salad as the pad see eiw lacked flavor and the crab rangoon was more like a vegetable rangoon with carrots and I think celery. The service was smooth and quick. It is pretty dark and small inside but their outside seating is cute. read more

Aroy is a neighborhood gem! We love getting quick and easy takeout or dining inside. It's super cozy and warm. The food is authentic and delicious. Pad Thai either tofu is always my go-to. We also do the pad see eiw which has a great sauce. Cash only unless you do an online to-go order! read more

Awful experience. And I'm surprised because I pretty consistently see rave reviews as one of the top Thai places in the city. All of the dishes I ordered were bad. Papaya salad had mushy vegetables and the sauce smelled rotten (not the normal fish sauce taste/smell). Panang curry was thin and watery. Shrimp in the pad Thai were mushy and smelled old. Basil fried rice was bland. read more

We've ordered from here several times. The most recent time we ordered my pad see ew had sand in it when I was chewing. My guess is from unwashed collard greens? I'm not sure. Kind of disappointed in this place, we liked the flavors but seems inconsistent on their cleanliness? Seems like a risky bet here especially with all the recent food borne illnesses/food recalls read more

Delivery ended up taking 90 minutes on a Wednesday. I ordered the Kow Soy (my Thai barometer) which came in two boxes. A couple minutes later after assembly, I took my first bite and was immediately impressed. The curry was still warm and had that peanut flavor I was craving. A good amount of chicken dispersed throughout too. Lastly, soft egg noodles that soaked up the curry and then plenty of onions, cilantro, and crispy noodles on top. Loved the overall taste and they even gave me some more spice on the side per my request. read more

I've been looking for an excellent Thai restaurant in Lincoln Square or Rogers Park. Aroy serves excellent Pad Thai. I had it with shrimp and my wife had it with chicken. They were prepared to perfection. I tried the cucumber salad too. Prices ( cash) are reasonable and portions are generous! I'll be back. It's my go to Thai place in Lincoln Square. Please note---- This restaurant is cash only My friend and I came here for dinner recently while we were in the area. We ordered pot stickers to start and thought that they were good. I forget the name of my main dish, but it was one of the spicier noodle ones that they had on their menu. I thought that the food and experience was good, but there are a few Thai restaurants I like better in this area and in my neighborhood. I may need to come back and try more items to give a better assessment. read more

Pad see ew with pork -sweet yet salty soy sauce flavor. Crispy vegetables. The tender pork gives it that umami kick. I'm not sure what the green veggies were ? Maybe Chinese broccoli leaves ? Tom yum soup -tangy and savory. Has the signature sour thai basil flavors. Lots of mushrooms. Beef salad -cucumbers, beef and onions topped with lime and some chili. Grilled bbq pork -really good at first but gets overwhelming with the flavors after the 4th piece. Careful to make sure it's cooked all the way through, since it is pork. This Thai spot made it seem like I never left California. All dishes were ordered with medium heat to enjoy. Would return. Cash only ! Pay for parking on streets $4 for 2 hours read more

Wow this place was delicious! Everything was piping hot and fresh. I didn't get a chance to snap pics because we devoured everything right away. Took in a nice weather day with patio seating. Aroy Thai is our favorite Thai restaurant in all of Chicago. We have been going here for well over a decade and is a place where we always stop when we are in the Ravenswood neighborhood. At our latest visit I got the regular Pad Thai with beef and my wife for the Aroy noodles. While I grown to like more spicy options, I still love getting the regular Pad Thai here. It's sweetness and no shortage of meat makes it a great selection. If you are in the Ravenswood neighborhood, please stop by this place. You will not be disappointed. read more

Aroy Thai Restaurant - Aroy Noodles - Thai Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

Aroy is a great Thai place, deserving of its recent fame! They have some more authentic Thai dishes, such as fermented sausage; as well as your typical noodles and curries. The menu is large and has something for everyone. A few notes: -they accept reservations and seating is limited -they are cash-only, so hit that ATM before you go -spice levels are high here; we ordered our dishes "medium" and we couldn't finish them due to the heat (but they were delicious) We got somtum (green papaya salad) to share and it was easily the best I've had. Very fresh and bright. I got the sriracha noodles and my friend got another stir-fried noodle dish. Both were excellent, very tangy and complex flavors. As noted, the food is spicy! We will be back for sure, but we'll be wimps and order stuff "mild" next time. read more

No idea on food but zero clue how long it takes to get food here. Came to pickup. Ordered at 7:15 and was told in 30 min. Was a total zoo in there and only gave me the food at 8:20. Over an hour. Why would I do this ever again. read more

First time I tried their food and will be the last. The high price does not compensate the amount of food neither the flavor. Serving the neighborhood for over 20 years, flavorful authentic Thai cuisine, this little hole in the wall in the heart of ravenswood was a trip back in time for me. Coming to this quaint spot right next to the brown line, I used to frequent this place as a younger adult. Some things have changed but the food and quality of each dish was memorable. Service was friendly and attentive, with carpeting and a quiet ambiance, you feel as if you are dining in someone's home. Had the Tom Kah Kai soup, flavors out of this world and didn't skimp on the chicken. Fresh egg rolls, pad won sen, and tender pineapple fried rice...enjoyed a piping hot bowl of pineapple curry at a level 4 spice. Being Latino i can handle some serious spice so even asked for Thai chili powder on the side and some extra dashes just made it perfection. My time travel was well worth the wait, I will be back again and again. Truly hit the spot!! read more

I drove 80 minutes from Aurora to get to this gem...and I can assure you that I will make the drive many more times. After ordering we realized that this is a BYOB so we asked for the order to stall for 10 minutes while we ran out for a sixer. Right when we returned the food was just arriving to the table and timing was perfect. Our waitress was super nice and friendly and the owner chatted us up a moment while he was heading out for ingredients. He even mentioned a more traditional Thai menu for my next visit. Being raised in Thailand and being exposed to the quality dishes back home, it is difficult to find a Thai restaurant in the states that doesn't just rely on boring Pad Thai and bland curries. Arroy Thai has a variety of dishes that you just don't find in the suburbs. Come here and pick something different and you will not be disappointed. Still solid after years and years. A true neighborhood gem. Shortly after my last review many years ago, they reorganized their menu following a feature on Check Please. Not much changed, except that their menu no longer has the bright photos I mentioned in my last review. Also, some items no one ever ordered were eliminated for a more streamlined menu - RIP my beloved raw shrimp salad. HOWEVER, you can still order the raw shrimp salad. Or try, at least. They always have the ingredients, but I've been told by friends that they've been turned down. I dunno. In that case, the grilled pork neck salad is just as good. Even after we moved away from Chicago, we still came to Aroy whenever we came to town. It's been exactly the same over the years - the most impressive thing is that the quality has not declined. Only when we moved away did we realized how much we took a restaurant like Aroy for granted. The more "typical" Thai-American dishes are good, but the more regional Isaan-style offerings are much better. Do the dishes still skew slightly sweet occasionally? Yes. But that's sort of what you get in a homey environment. And most of the time, the sweetness isn't a problem. Recently (last week), they were cash only for dine-in. But you can order for pick up with card online. I really hope to find a place like Aroy in our next city, but those are big shoes to fill in my heart (and belly). read more

I live in the neighborhood and decided since it was nice out I'd take a stroll instead of paying more to have things delivered. Place seemed pleasant enough so I walked up and told them I would like to place an order to go. Woman asked if I had cash which I didn't. She let me know they do not take cards. I just walked out and went across the street to Me Dee, another Thai restaurant and got food there. I am not going to question or say anything more as to why I could not pay with a card and I will never go there again. read more

I think this was a hidden gem in Ravenswood. My friend took me to this Thai restaurant that was really really good. I would say the only thing to know before coming is that it's cash only. They do have an atm but if you want to avoid those fees then make sure you have cash. I got the shrimp shumai and it was a little over cooked but still pretty good. I also got the veggie pad Thai and it was probably one of the better Thai spots I've had in Chicago. If you're ever in Ravenswood you should check this spot out. The staff is really friendly and they definitely take care of you! read more

***3.5 stars*** Hubby and I ordered food to go during COVID times and our order was ready within the designated time ~20 minutes. I had the khao soy while hubby had the pad Thai. At first glance, I noticed that the pad Thai was super orange in color which is probably attributable to the amount of ketchup that was used. Hubby isn't picky and will eat almost anything and he noticed that there was a stronger ketchup flavor and wasn't as fond of this pad Thai as other ones he's had. The khao soy was decent and the flavor was good. There were six spice levels to choose from so I went with spice level two thinking that it would just tickle my senses but it was way more spicy than I expected. It was still tolerable but I thought that it would be only mildly spicy. read more

Came by for lunch. Service was fair, ambiance casual and food was between 3 - 4 stars. The food here was excellent! I had the panang curry noodles which was absolutely stellar. Piping hot, flavorful curry, soft noodles. It was comfort in a bowl. This was a great BYOB Thai spot in Uptown. Though far from the city, the food was definitely tasty. Our service was very quick too. No corkage fee is always a plus as nowadays it seems like all good BYOB spots are charging fees.... We ordered the papaya salad, egg rolls, shrimp pad thai, and beef green curry. I honestly was worried this would be too much food, but the portions are quite small compared to other Thai restaurants I had been to. Everything was delicious, and the spice level was great. I would recommend this restaurant, but I'm not sure if it's worth the trip as most Thai restaurants seem to offer the same taste and quality to me... read more
