This place is SOO good! It might be my favorite place for Nepalese or Indian food in the area, and it has some stiff competition. Every dish is amazingly good every time I go (especially in contrast to other nearby similar restaurants who are hit-or-miss). I usually see the owner when I'm there and he's always giving good recommendations. I never thought I could love chow mein so much! Everything there is fresh and well spiced. Usually I will do take-out, but it's also a great place to eat in; their bar is fun and food comes out perfectly hot. I must say the first time I went to Himalayan Kitchen, I was a bit skeptical because their expansive menu includes some surprises like burgers and fries and chicken wingers. BEST INDIAN FOOD IVE HAD. I can't even describe all the flavors. I ordered the chicken madras with chili cheese naan. I would say it has a similar creaminess as chicken tikka masala (just not as much), it was a tiny bit spicy, the right amount of saltiness. The naan was also perfect. It was stuffed with cheese so it wasn't messy and did get all stuck to the aluminum which is so convenient for ordering out. I will say it was spicier than I thought at times but it was a good spicy. This place is such a great restaurant. It feels very family-owned and the owner (or manager?) was so friendly! He talked to us and checked up on us a lot, and even gave us a free rice pudding! Samosas: Good, pretty standard samosas. MoMo: Delicious pan-fried dumplings! They remind me of Chinese shengjianbao. Almost all of the reviews on Yelp were recommending this, and they are definitely really good. Nonetheless, I think they were slightly edged out by the other two main dishes we ordered Sekuwa: We got sekuwa chicken, and that stuff was GOOD. It's charbroiled to a crisp. And by crisp I mean the outer layer of the chicken is an explosion of rich flavors and complex spices, perfectly broiled. It tasted SO good. This is tied for my favorite dish. My only complaint is that the bell peppers that came with this dish tasted like dirty dish rags. That was kind of gross. Bombay Wings: These were the other dish tied for my favorite. Went today with a friend and had a fantastic experience. We like trying out interesting spots and I love trying something new off a menu. We got "The" curry-lamb, two different paratha, veggie momos and goat balut which was marinated goat organ (can't remember the spelling fully) and a mango lassi. Everything came out quickly and was tasty and the owner came out to speak with us about the dishes his wife cooked which was lovely and later brought out some rice pudding on the house for us to try. My husband and I decided to try this place for our anniversary dinner, and I am so thankful we did! Located in Union square, along with so many other local joints to check out, this place offers a unique flare. It blends Nepali & Indian flavors to create the most comforting dishes. It is cozy on the inside with limited seating and a few chairs if you wanted to sit at the bar. We fortunately were able to get a table for 2 with no problem. We had a couple of young gentlemen who greeted and took care of us. Both were extremely nice and gave personal recommendations on the menu. I had difficulty choosing because everything sounded amazing but decided on the chicken tikka masala as my entrée accompanied by the cheesy garlic nan. My husband chose a chicken dish. I believe it was tandoori chicken, and we also ordered chicken pakora as our appetizer. The pakora had a crunchy coat and tender on the inside. Next came my cheesy garlic nan and it was fantastic! I have never had a cheese pull like this with nan and it was amazing! The chicken tikka was sweet and savory. I am still thinking about it. We were greeted so warmly immediately upon going in the restaurant, and it felt so homely and comfortable despite it being a smaller restaurant. We were seated pretty quickly and at this point we were all so hungry and wanted to try everything on the menu. We ordered their momos, aloo dum, chili, and a chicken biryani. This is my first time trying Himalayan food, and it definitely exceeded expectations. You know what, this place is incredible! Like its predecessor, it's a bit of what I in a dad-joke-mood I might call "Iron Chef style", they serve "all the cuisine"! My partner and I stopped by here for dinner at about 7pm on a Saturday. The place was pretty packed with some people waiting outside to get seated. Fortunately, we were seated within 10 minutes, and the owner even apologized to us, explaining that they were short-staffed that night. We ordered mango lassi, dirty mango lassi, garlic naan, Chicken Makhani, and Lamb curry. The mango lassi was delicious. There was a strong taste of sweet mango throughout the drink - one of the best I have had. The dirty mango lassi was pretty in the presentation and was alright overall. It felt underwhelming after tasting the regular mango lassi with a thinner consistency. If you like a hint of coconut mixed with mango though, you will enjoy the dirty mango lassi. The garlic naan tasted pretty good though I wish it was slightly fluffier. The chicken makhani tasted fine but could use more flavoring. I was surprised that the server did not ask for our preferred spice level when taking our order. Both curries could have used some spice to give a kick as they seemed a bit bland. I did appreciate the large chunks of meat present in both curries. This is one of the most generous spots I have seen. Everything is served in disposable containers, which makes it easy to pack up for leftovers to bring back. The owner was also really generous and gave us a free rice pudding to-go for dessert! Fun stop while we were in Somerville! The person who greeted us was very friendly and recommended the boozy mango lassi, which was yummy. We ordered mostly from the Himalayan menu, plus chicken tikka masala for the kid. The tikka masala was pretty basic and kind of reminded me of cream of tomato soup; it would have benefitted from some heat or spice or something, but we weren't asked for spice level when we ordered (and it should be noted my kid thought it was good just the way it was) We really liked the vegetable dumplings with chutney. Sekewa(?) (chicken chunks marinated in yogurt and then chargrilled) was tasty. The vegetable and egg pancake (we ordered chicken but couldn't really find any so it might have been left out) dish was a little confusing and hard to eat. It's served with a bean soup-like side that we were told we could dip or pour over. But it was impossible to eat with the provided flatware. So this is my biggest complaint about this restaurant, but maybe this isn't normal. I'm okay with being served on disposable plates with plastic cutlery while I'm at a table service restaurant, but the combination of a slippery plastic plate, cheap forks with tines that bend and saucy, oily foods that need to be cut - just did not work. We walked in and the restaurant was packed, which is a good sign in my opinion. We're introverts though and prefer to eat at home, so we ordered take out. J (the owner) took our order and knew the menu inside out. They were running a fundraiser and were out of Bara, so I asked what he would recommend to order instead. He suggested the Chicken Madras, and it was delicious. Tender chicken with fresh tamarind sauce and rice. I also got garlic naan which had a truly strong garlic flavor, I enjoyed it a lot and would get these again. We also ordered steamed chicken Mo Mo, which came with a mild/medium spicy dipping sauce. The dough was soft and filled with well seasoned meat, I look forward to trying the other variations. -and- The [mixed] chow mein had many layers of flavor, the eggs were both fluffy and fried, and I could taste curry in it which was unique to my chow mein experiences in other restaurants. I saw on Yelp Himalayan Kitchen on Bow Street in Somerville and visited it today at about 5pm. Had a nice chat with the gentleman at the front desk, who owns the restaurant with his wife. He told me that they opened the first Nepali restaurant in the Boston area six years ago and make some of the authentic Nepali food. I ordered the vegetable momo and the Newari Samay Baji, and both were excellent! The momo in spicy sauce was extremely tasty and in my experience it is much harder to make good momo with only vegetables than with meat, so I would highly recommend it. Himalayan Kitchen is my go-to spot every time I crave momo and a filling meal to share with friends. I've eaten here for several years now and not once has it let me down. I always walk in excited for the food and eager to greet Jay. He makes me feel like I'm walking into to a local Nepali momo shop every time. The consistency in the recipe and execution in the food is commendable. Aside from the fire food, the hospitality, sense of community, and chill vibe of the restaurant is what leaves me wanting more every time. Even when I visited momo spots in Nepal, I missed the signature feel and taste of HK. You can never go wrong with the basics: steamed chicken momo, c-momo, and chicken/veg chow mein. The steamed momo filling is not dry and go hand-in-hand with the sauce, I prefer the milder orange one. The crispy texture of the wrapper and juicy flavorful filling of the c-momo bathed in the chili sauce is spicy but in all the right ways. You won't be able to stop! I rarely drink soda but I get a cool glass bottle of Coca-Cola because that's the only way to do momo (!?! a timeless pairing). The chow mein is stir fried to perfection and has a smokey flavor that enhances the taste. My Nepali and non-Nepali friends love the jhol momo, c-momo, and goat sekuwa (another flavor bomb). Mango lassi is a must too -- just the right amount of tang. The portion is generous and you can't beat the price anywhere else. The staff is inviting and skillful. We went for the Mo Mo's... we had chix/panfried. Very good. Can't quite figure the menu out... which ranges from Nepalese, Indian, Himalayan, to standard sub shop fare. (Pizza, wraps, subs etc)... kitchen guy yelled out "onion rings up!" While i was eating MoMos. Hahahaha. We ordered lentil pancakes cooked with egg and ground meat , and a sort of vegetarian meatball in a tikki masala sauce. All was very good. The basmati rice was perfect. The garlic naan was okay.... Something about the dough was not as great as other Indian eateries. Di not expect proper plates and serving pots. Food is served in the to-go containers w/ plastic plates. This is a bit odd, but must cut down on the sink work back of house. When the check comes they bring lids for any leftovers. Ambience was good. Full bar with beer and cocktails also on offer. The owner(?) came by everyones table to ask how the food was and if he could provide anything else. This is a big plus in my book. I will try this Somerville spot again at some point.
