We just returned from one of many excellent meals that we've had from the Himalayan Kitchen. Everything is always delicious and the service prompt. Today we had egg chow mein, which seemed vastly superior to Chinese chow mein, eggplant and chicken, Tandoori and soup. The food has a decidedly Indian bent with a tad of Chinese influence. Not the standard fare for a "meat 'n' potatoes" type of guy, but I enjoyed the meal. It started off with a complementary lentil soup, followed by my piping hot chicken soup appetizer, followed with Lamb Biryani. My portions were large. There was so much soup and Biryani, that I took it home for tomorrow's dinner. The clean dining room is contemporary in design. Prices are normal, i.e. as expected. Service was attentive. The restaurant is modestly decorated, clean and the quality and flavor of the food was excellent! It also has many vegan options. I had the Baingan Bharha Curry (vegan) and my partner had the Himalayan mixed grill, which were both excellent! It's a family owned business and the service was warm and friendly. Himalayan Kitchen in San Rafael is the BEST! We ordered our food to go for a staff event. Everyone, even our pickiest eaters, enjoyed the selections. All the food is fragrant, bursting with flavor, and not oily. The saag paneer cubes are tastier and more flavorful than any we've had before, as is the spinach in that dish! It's traditional, yet lighter Indian style, and, therefore, different in a significant way! The butter chicken was so delicious. We ordered mild for those who can't handle the heat, but the spices were still abundant. Everything was flavorful and created with much care and love. The chow mein was a BIG hit, too! There were rave reviews all around! Our group didn't dine in the restaurant, but I noticed cheery, artful lighting and cleanly furnished spaces while visiting for our order. I also saw a quiet little nook with a cluster of small tables behind the front desk wall, which looked cozy and inviting! This restaurant is a stellar place with caring staff and delicious food! A new family-owned and run restaurant has opened in Montecito center. Wehave now gone there for dinner twice and each time we were totally satisfied. I think this place will become our favorite destination for Asian food. Excellent food, excellent service, VERY reasonable prices. read more

If you are feeling down or depressed, do yourself a favor and get the Lamb Korma and the baingan bharta from here and it will SLAP you across the face with flavor while simultaneously giving your taste bug's a huge hug. Cute, bright, clean restaurant with a great atmosphere. I ordered takeout on a Saturday evening, and my food was hot and ready in about 15 minutes. The two naan that I got (garlic + Kashmiri) were excellent. The palak paneer, which is my litmus test for Indian restaurants, was just okay. It wasn't a creamy gravy like I am used to, and the amount of paneer was a little disappointing. Food was very good, definitely some of the better Indian and Nepalese food I've had in the area. We went for the butter chicken and vegetable curry and liked them both. We also got some apps on the house for being friendly, which was a nice touch. The service was awesome and the waiter (didn't get his name) was very friendly and earned a solid tip. The interior of the restaurant felt spacious, clean and neatly designed and there were a few tables for outdoor seating. The restaurant is tucked into Montecito Plaza which has a bunch of other shops, so parking was a bit tricky around the time we went. read more

I was in San Rafael with a friend and couldn't decide where we wanted to eat. We found this place and man oh man, the food here was delicious! And their service was great! We shared the beet salad, chicken Tikka Masala, basmati rice, garlic basil Naan, and the Kashmiri Naan. Everything was perfect. I have never had Kashmiri Naan and it was sooo good! Came across this restaurant when we were shopping at Trader Joe's in San Rafael. This restaurant deserves more visibility although it is tucked in a corner of Montecito plaza. It was closed during the pandemic but has re-opened now. We have tried it a couple of times and have been blown by how good the food is. The taste is almost authentic and less Americanized which is refreshing. We ordered the butter chicken, paneer tikka masala and chicken biryani. We asked for the medium spicy level which was good enough for us. If you are less tolerant for spice, go for mild. The food was delicious and every dish tasted different which was good to see as it means every dish was prepared from a different sauce, a breath of fresh air from the same bulk sauce preparation most of the restaurants follow. Just an additional tip, they have a separate menu which focuses on Nepali/ Indo-chinese cuisine which is a niche cuisine within India. I intend to try it next time but do give this restaurant a try and I promise you will not be disappointed. read more
