Today in the Bay: - $5 for a large cup of milk tea with boba - $6 for a loaf of artisan bread - $7 to get across the Bay Bridge during rush hour - $8 for a bottle of fresh pressed juice with protein - $9 for a fancy dessert at a boutique patisserie - $10 for a lunch buffet at Himalayan Kitchen.... say what?! Himalayan Kitchen is a hidden gem just off of El Camino Real. Most Indian lunch buffets I've been to are either upscale and delicious but pricey (like Sakoon), or at standard lunch prices but with limited options. With its amazing food and unbelievably amazing pricing, Himalayan Kitchen is a bit of a secret--maybe I shouldn't be writing this flashy Yelp review. They have a la carte that has more variety, including Himalayan cuisine like momo dumplings. The buffet focuses on classic North Indian food, i.e. what people generally think of as Indian food staples, so this place is an excellent one-stop-shop to satisfy all your Indian food cravings. Starting off at the lunch buffet queue, you'll notice a colorful array of dishes. There's the simple lentil-based daal, the aromatic spices of chettinad chicken, the lightly creamy tikka masala, the spinach-based vindaoo, and a fragrant cilantro sauce to name a few. Carb options are awesome. I love the naan, which is freshly made and piping hot with a melted layer of buttery goodness. The biryani tastes very home-cooked. Unlike the stronger flavors of biryani that I've noticed at many restaurants, the spice blend here is more subtle and heterogeneous. To mix things up, they also have a few fried items like spinach pakora, a crispy version of bhindi masala (it's like okra chips with sauce; sounds odd but it's so good!), and even potato chips seasoned with spices. I like to take a little bit of everything, and my plate is a party of diverse flavors and textures. The tandoori dishes are one of my favorites. Wrapped in foil to keep warm, the meat is grilled to a deep smokiness, and it isn't too burnt or dry. It seems a tad bit too salty if you have too much. Another highlight is the goat curry, since they are actually quite generous with the meat. To wrap up the feast, they have some noteworthy desserts. I'll admit I'm more of a cake/ice cream person (the type of person who would get a $9 slice of boutique patisserie cake that I made fun of at the beginning of my review), but I was quite satisfied with the options. The gulab jamun has a maple syrup sweetness and a cakey texture. They also had this other tasty dessert which was essentially like a sweet potato paste (at first I didn't know it was dessert and I mixed it with some biryani... whoops. Still delicious though!) I was pleasantly surprised by a tart, mango lassi-based fruit custard. As some fellow Yelpers mentioned, they have complimentary chai. It's self-serve and sugar is on the side, so you can completely adjust the sweetness. In short, the standards at Himalayan Kitchen are as tall as the Himalayas. I generally love their biryanis, but lately they're lacking in consistency. I picked up a chicken biryani when I ordered a veg biryani, had to go back to exchange. On the exchange I got an extremely spicy version of the veg biryani which was inedible due to the spice. The last two orders I got undercooked rice. They sell a 4" tray size (height) biriyani - but when you check the actual size of the tray it's 2" height (depth) only. I only measured the size because the quantity was way too less for 100$ they charge for a tray goat biriyani. I told them and they said they have been doing this for 8 years.. i also informed them that I will put this kind of incorrect measurement and bad sale tricks on yelp, and they asked me why I should do it? The other customers are smart.. !! so you make sure they don't charge you for less. See the picture.. the 2" tray they use to sell biriyani as 4" tray!!! I've driven by this place many times and never really gave it a second thought until my co worker suggested we go. There is parking in front. We went for a weekday lunch and they had a buffet available. It was literally the best Indian style buffet I've ever had. Literally everything was delicious. The service was good. Altho it was all mostly self serve (which I liked) we had a carafe of water. They would take our dirty plates when we went to get more food. The price blew me away. It was about 10 per person. I've done takeout from here twice through DoorDash and have really enjoyed it both times. The doordash page is very clear about what you're ordering and stuff. I've gotten the matar paneer both times and have really enjoyed it! Some other places around here I feel like make their dishes like this have too much oil or cream but Himalayan's kitchen is the one of the first paneers I've had in the area I've whole-heartedly enjoyed. Their naans are also great, as are their vegetable samosas, and their mango lassi. I just docked off one star because I got raita from here since I was craving it and really did not like it - I thought it tasted exactly like chives and onions cream cheese and not actual raita with cucumbers and coriander that I was craving. Overall, the other food from here is really good and I also appreciate that they have such reasonable prices compared to the rest of the area! I picked up a to go order for my family here and I was pleasantly surprised at how great the food is. The portion sizes were good, the taste was excellent, the music is a little bit too loud for inside dining, but I really do enjoy this place and I recommend that people give it a try. Dropped in for lunch today. We ordered ala cart ( the attendant said AYCE should start in a month or so). The Paneer chili, Chicken masala, garlic naan and a small container of basmati rice. We were asked on spicyness: we said medium. The food arrived in a quick ten minutes, each served in plastic pandemic safe containers. The paneer chili was full of 12 mm cubes of paneed in a thick red chili sauce with hunks of green bell pepper, onions and slivers of carrot. Very tasty. The chicken masala was tasty too. The garlic naan had a fresh taste too. Complimentary bottled water was served. Nice touch HImalayan Kitchen. $28.90 with tax. We left a generous tip. Customer service: very good. Precovid we absolutely loved the food here and were loyal repeat customers for their full spread buffet. During Covid however, we've encountered some on and off issues with their take out pick up items. Today we came across another issues where we ordered the Tandori chicken Kebabs that are advertised as 8 pieces. However after paying full price for this menu item, we only received 6 pieces. We feel slightly ripped off and having to commute back and forth to address this issue at this location directly with the restaurant is not safe during the time of covid. We were trying to minimize travel. We still left three stars because we enjoyed everything else, the Mutton Sukka, butter chicken, fish palok, batura bread, continued to be reliable delicious favorites that we enjoyed quite a bit. A friend who went here regularly for 5 years introduced me to Himalayan Kitchen's Chicken Dum Biryani and I now know why he is a fan. Have never visited the restaurant but have ordered from here several times and whenever I do, I stay glued to the phone awaiting its arrival. My kitchen smells of biryani for hours after leaving the box there for 10 mins. The aroma is so strong. So is the flavour. It is served in a very good quantity (one full take away box) and makes up two meals for me. Raita (spiced yogurt) and spicy gravy to add to the flavour is provided separately. We went to the place and decided to try only the appetizers. I loved the mutton sukka at this place and the chicken tikka - the mutton was soft and almost melted in the mouth. The chicken was good as well and the portion size very good. I was suitably impressed with the paneer tikkas too - the paneer was very soft and flavourful a combination which many places fail to achieve. I've only ever gotten food for take away here so this review is purely for the takeout experience. The food is overall tasty. My only complaint is the lack of protein in their dishes. I like to order butter chicken and chicken tikka masala. The sauce is tasty but the container has very few pieces of chicken and mostly sauce. That's not a problem when you order a side of rice...but the rice comes in the tiniest take out container. The naan, both garlic and regular, has a good flavor but is chewy and gets rather hard very quickly...almost like it was nuked in a microwave to warm up before being wrapped in aluminum foil. Maybe these things are the nature of take out vs dine in? I know the soggy fried cauliflower is a product of being steamed in the take out container so it's never the right texture when I get it home. But I order it anyway because the spices knock my socks off. read more

Found this place online and thought it looked promising so i placed a delivery order through doordash. I ordered Chicken tikka masala, tandoori chicken kebabs, chicken momos, garlic naan and plain basmati rice. The tikka masala was good, but it came cold as well as the rice (not a big deal). Good amount of chicken and good flavor, I recommend this dish. The kebabs were ok. Nothing special but good enough. They were spicy which i like, but I've had better tandoori chicken before. The Momos were super good! I've had some weird tasting ones from other places but these were excellent. The sauce is good too. I will definitely order these again. The naan was warm and fresh. Delicious and inexpensive Indian food with good service. Have been here couple of times. Tried their buffet once and had an ala Carte of chicken curry and Himalayan special lamb on the other occasion. Buffet has a good collection of food ranging from South Indian food to pani puri , biryani and sweets. Also totally recommend the Himalayan special lamb curry as well. Delicious! Not the cleanest place though. So wouldn't call it a fine dining place, but not too bad either. I've enjoyed the lunch buffet here for a long time before Covid struck and wiped out all the buffets around. Since then, I have tried their takeout or delivery several times - perhaps could've been more often except I like trying new places too much. Himalayan kitchen is one of the few places that I'd say is very reliable in terms of good food quality and value for money, regardless of what you pick from the menu. Their buffet used to have some really good options - multiple chicken appetizers like chicken 65 or kababs, pani puri on weekends, often including fish or goat entree/app (rare in the cheaper buffets). Repeat delivery order choices include the Vijayawada boneless chicken biryani, shahi gosht biryani, CTM / butter chicken - and naans to round it up, but those are just ok. The buffet did have the problem of being extremely crowded and noisy, and similarly for pickup I'd suggest ordering ahead way in advance - when I ordered while shopping nearby & showed up in a few mins, had to wait a really long time as they happened to be backed up with dinner orders. read more

This hole-in-the-wall place is not visible from El Camino. Tucked away in a small strip mall, parking was easy when we came for dinner on a Friday. We were fine with its no-frills casual setting. They were very busy. We had to flag them down a few times for service. They ran out of meat momos, so we had the vegetarian. Still good. Chicken curry had a nice flavor but also got a kick to it. As you may have observed, Himalayan Kitchen is now in its space. Came for a quick lunch and tried the Momo and Himalayan lamb special. Momos are excellent, good texture and flavor. The lamb special was well seasoned, good spice, though the lamb itself was sometime a bit tough and dry, depending on the piece. The service is interesting. One person is very shy and soft spoken, the other is a bit too forward. I think they have some customer interaction adjustments to be made. If you understand Indian food, you'll see the crossover, and there's also a Desi Chinese component of the menu too. 3.5 stars read more
