Probably been to Himalayan Kitchen, or HK, as it is fondly called by some regulars, more than 20 times in the last few years! We have tried almost everything on their menu and basically given them a lot of business with dine-in and takeouts for both individual and party settings :D Foods that I've tried: 1. Vijayawada biryani: HK's most famous dish. Biryani is basically spiced rice with choice of protein. The Vijayawada version of biryani has incredible flavors and is kinda spicy to begin with. They only carry chicken and paneer (cottage cheese) as protein options for this biryani and would love if they could add tofu and seitan biryani as well. 2. Southern Indian food: idli, vada, dosa (many varieties), sambar, rasam 3. Northern Indian food: chana masala 4. Indo-chinese food: sweet corn soup (not a fan), momos (love the momos!), Chowmein, fried rice, gobi 65 (must have) Ambience/location: Convenient location in Mountain View close to freeways and ample parking in the plaza. Gets very crowded in the evenings or weekends due to multiple pickups and people waiting in line for dine in. Good for large groups, has a restroom, and restaurant doesn't feel cramped. Service: Friendly service. Would love it they can accommodate minor special requests from regulars (like if I want vada/rasam not vada sambar which is on their menu, it is an easy 1-1 replacement but they refused and asked me to buy both dishes separately) but I think they're always overwhelmed so I give them the benefit of doubt. Food quality: I don't know what kind of ingredients they use. It would be great if they can start listing if they use organic ingredients or not. A really yummy spot with all the Indian and Nepali favorites -- we got takeout due to COVID 19 and the food had a small wait but definitely worth it! The momo was a unique Nepali dish which was pretty good, albeit not too spicy and a bit squishy after being in a takeout box (would probably reorder if we went back in person)! The Egg Biriyani was really tasty but definitely beware the spice -- I was sweating but the food was great and the mango lassi helped to calm my tongue down. We also got the Mutter Paneer with naan and it was really good. The servings are pretty hefty and we definitely had some leftovers. We discovered Himalayan Kitchen during COVID and it's been in our normal restaurant rotation ever since. Our go to's are butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, basmati rice, veggie samosas, garlic naan and onion kulcha. Just the perfect amount of heat in the sauces, so tasty. We used to absolutely love this place but something changed over the last couple of years. We'd come twice a month or so pre-pandemic but then the buffet price kind of doubled. For vegetarian folks managing how much they eat and keeping portions small it just didn't seem like a fair price for some rice and a few vegetables. No worries, we switched to getting take-out. Unfortunately, over the last six months this has really declined too; the portions are often small and "cheaped out", e.g. we just had Mushroom 65 with most of the container taken up with raw onion and a couple of tablespoons of badly cooked mushrooms. The naan bread was badly under-cooked too with doughy areas. It's a real shame as this place reminded me of flavors from back home (the UK) but it's just gone downhill. read more

The food here is great but they are the worst at taking orders on the phone - the first time they prepared only our partial order and the second time they were not able to understand what I was trying to order. But I'd rate them 5 for the quality of food - their samosa chaat is amazing - I always get it. It's a perfect blend of sweet and savory flavors. The wait was worth it, every item was delicious and the quantities were apt as well. 1. Shahi goat biryani - 5/5 It's a different style of biryani, tastes a bit like pulav from our native place but the dumm is perfect. You can taste and smell the goat flavor in the rice so well. Well seasoned and dumm is good on this one as well 3. Fried idli - 4/5 Good, doesn't taste too oily as the fried idli can get at quite oily and less tasty at some places 4. This review is for catering order . We had catered from here for my baby shower for 50 people and also had live dosa counter . The food tasted really good quality and the portions that they bought can serve another 50 people . All the meat dishes had so much meat , not just dishes with too much gravy . Even the vegetarian dishes were well made without too much oil yet tasting really fresh n good . The dosas were really good with ample chutneys . I was browsing for Indian food in the Mountain View area and saw how this has plenty of decent reviews. I have an upcoming trip next year to India and Nepal so I wanted to prepare for that by psyching myself with the food. Actually, I just want to find an excuse to eat Indian food hehe. Arrived at the restaurant at opening. We were the first family there, however a family who arrived after us was waited on before us. I am wondering if it was because we are not Indian, but the other family was. The server's interactions with the other family was way more positive and frequent than the service we received. After 45mins, meal #1 came. It was sizzling. Noticed our table was the only one without utensils. Waited around for our waiter to come around (never did), so I gave up hope and grabbed them myself. Because it was sizzling, there was no way I could've eaten it without a fork. Appetizer came out next (which shouldn't this have come out first). Cut them open to cool down and I found a hair deep fried inside!!!! Again, waited for the waiter. Finally my spouse loudly told me to tell the person at the register. The waiter overheard and finally came over. I told him that there was a hair in my food and gave it back to him. He literally inspected it like he didn't believe me and said he would get me a new one. After an house, meal #2 came. At this point, I just want to leave. I waive the waiter over and ask for 2 boxes. He gave me the tiniest boxes and I barely fit my leftovers, but did not want ask for another one. Paid the bill, but didn't get my receipt so I had to ask for it. Oh, and my replacement appetizer didn't come out. Overall, the entries tasted fine. The appetizer that I did eat tasted weird, like frost burnt. Service was lacking. I can forgive the wait times because it looked like they had a large catering event going on, but other than that we did not enjoy our experience here and so not plan on coming back. read more

WOW!! My partner and I visited Nepal last year and this is the closest we've been to that same culinary experience. Incredibly quick and kind service, with vibrant fun music videos from the region playing in the background. This is my biryani go to place whenever I crave for biryani. I usually like their Vijayawada chicken biryani which is pretty flavorful and amazing. They give a good amount for the price compared to other restaurants. The chicken 65 is great too. Their buffets also have great options. As someone who doesn't have a sweet tooth I have always liked their fruit custard and always leave some room for it after the main course :) I have done a lot of take outs here and so far no issues as well read more

I have had paneer biryani from here atleast 6 times. And every single time they deliver. The paneer biryani has big soft pieces of paneer in a spicy masala. Service was excellent as per Indian tradition they served water first w/o asking. Waiter was courteous recommended various biriyani dishes. We picked up four. Asked for more goat pieces with more meat on the bones, my preferred way. Food was excellent, made with basmati rice, goat meat and various flavors of Indian spices. Dishes were not too spicy and oily. Served with raitha and small pot of Indian curry to make it more spicy depends on individual choices. At the end waiter offered us 10% discounts on total bill and earned 20% gratuity from four of us. Price per person was $17. As every Indian tradition we like to have sweet badishep. I ordered tikka masala but I think I received an butter chicken I assume. But it's okay because it was good. And some naan other onion bread it was so soft and fluffy. Incredible. It went so well with gravy yum Chili chicken was definitely on point; strong Indian flavor. Spicy, sour and salty. Perfect. Wish there were a little more chicken but fair enough. I also ordered some mixed pickles. I love Indian pickles. And Himalayan Kithcen didn't play around. It was the best pickle I have ever had around this area. Hands down the Best Indian Lunch Buffer in Bay Area. They have recently increased the buffer price to around $25. Before I visited I thought it's ridiculously expensive as I have had buffet here for around $11-$12 before pandemic. But after going there I felt like it's totally worth the money. Every item in the spread was super fresh just out of kitchen and so yum. Non veg lovers can have feast here. Deserts starters biryanis dal rasam everything was good. They serve complimentary chai, mango lassi and beer as beverages. I recommend going around 11:45 AM as they just open, everything is very fresh and delicious. First things first; our waiter, Sid, the guy with the curly hair, was awesome! He was friendly, took the time to explain some menu items, and had a good sense of humor. Now let's get to the nitty gritty! Overall the food was okay, nothing was WOW. Disappointing. We ordered multiple items: chicken tikka, biryani, tandoori fish, tandoori chicken, Himalayan special (comes with multiple items), a chickpea dish, a black lentil dish, a paneer dish and naan. The tandoori fish tasted very fishy, tasted old, and was rubbery. The tandoori chicken had some flavor but parts of it were burnt and did not seem fresh at all. The chicken tikka and the paneer dish were the best two dishes we ate, they had flavor and they were good. Sadly, I would definitely not order the black lentil dish and the chickpea dish if I was to go again (which I won't)! The biryani was ok. The Himalayan special was something different! I enjoyed it but again the food was okay, lacked flavor. The naan was very good, garlicky, buttery and thick. The sauces were really good. Oh and do not order the mango lassi! Just don't! The men's bathroom was disgusting. If you do come to this restaurant and want to brush the not good food from your taste buds, you are in luck!! There is a toothbrush in the bathroom on top of the mirror. Here's the kicker, they charged us for items we didn't order and a service charge (the service charge is only for a party more than 6)!! Review your bill! Our awesome waiter took care of us though and corrected the bill, he's not sure why his coworker charged extra. I forgot to take pictures of the food before we started eating! We went right as they opened at 5 pm, so we were the first ones there. I went to the restroom and saw that the sink had a bunch of food bits in there from either vomit or someone emptying their food in the sink without washing it. Either way, that was disgusting. The waitress was also busy killing flies with her fly swatter until we waved her down to take our order. Good thing the food had some redeeming qualities to it. We ordered the samosas and punugulu as starters and then the chicken tikka masala and garlic naan as the main dish. We had never had punugulu before, but they are fried rice/lentil puffs type of thing, the consistency is similar to fried bread, like hush puppies. They actually tasted really similar to hush puppies. The sauces for the samosas and punugulu were very different than the typical sauces you get, and frankly not as tasty (they even smelled a bit off, like they were going bad). The samosas were basic, but a bit small and flavorless on the inside (without the typical sauces, it was even less appealing). The best dish that helped make the issues we saw when we got there was the Chicken Tikka Masala. The sauce was perfect - savory, a bit sweet, and flavorful. I would definitely go back there just for that dish. The rest of the food and experience was just okay. But the food prices are very reasonable, so it makes this place okay. read more

The name of the restaurant "Himalayan Kitchen" belies the absolutely gigantic menu, which covered dishes not just from the Himalayas, but also from all over India and Nepal, including an entire section on South Indian specialties. We started our tour of this huge culinary landscape with an appetizer of the chicken momos, a plate of five dumplings filled with a ground chicken mixture, served with a yellow dipping sauce and a spicy red chili sauce on the side. The Himalayan Special Tandoori was a sizzling metal plate of sliced onions topped with a tandoori chicken leg, chicken tikka kabab, a tandoori shrimp, and my favorite, a tandoori seekh kabab, made of ground lamb mixed with spices. The platter of meats was served with a super refreshing green herb chutney on the side, which added just the right herbaceousness and acidity to contrast the tandoori meats. From the bread section of the menu, the Gobi Paratha was a whole wheat flatbread stuffed with a yellow mixture of spiced cauliflower, served with yogurt on the side. But my favorite dish of all was the Madras Masala Dosa from the menu of South Indian specialties. This rice and lentil batter crepe was folded into the shape of a triangle and came with a filling of karapodi (a spicy chili powder), cilantro, a ton of chopped onions, and spiced masala potatoes with peas and crunchy bits of dal. The perfectly thin and crispy crepe was served with a bowl of hot, spicy, sour sambar soup (made of lentils and chopped vegetables), along with a thick, sweet, acidic, spicy red tomato chutney, and an earthy white coconut chutney. There was so much diversity in the flavors and textures of every bite of this dosa accompanied by the masala filling, the sambar, and the chutneys, making for an absolutely delicious dish! read more

I'm sure this one will need a lot of justification. I decided to checkout this place even though my friend was very skeptic about this one. Per him, the only good thing in their menu was Momos, but I decided to get Chicken Tikka Masala, Kadhai Paneer, Tandoori Roti, Vegetable Fried Rice. We placed a to-go order and got home. The chicken tasted nice, but it tasted more like butter chicken then chicken tikka masala. You could feel the butter flowing through the rich curry and soft texture. But did I order butter chicken? No, I had ordered chicken tikka masala. For Kadhai Paneer, the curry this time was accurate per ingredients, but did lack taste. It had much more onion than bell pepper and paneer combined. It could have been named Kadhai Onion. I loved the vegetable fried rice. Though it wasnt spicy as you'd expect an Indo - Chinese fried rice to be, but it was surprisingly good. Finally, the tandoori roti was good too. By the time we reached home it had gotten a bit chewy but nevertheless could be rated 3.5/5. If it were just food I would have wanted to give 3.5 rating and then considering the Covid situation would have bumped it to 4. But the to-go experience was what brought it down to 3. Could have gone even lower. After I placed the order the person said 25 mins wait. After 25 mins when we checked with him, we were asked to wait additional 5 mins, then additional 5-10 mins, then again 5 more mins. This time (after total 40+ mins) when I was going to check again, I had decided if it still wasn't ready (though I never did this nor do I recommend doing this) I'll just walk out without the order. But eventually it was ready after 45 mins. So zero star for pickup experience. Oh and yes I forgot to mention, I wanted to order vegetarian Thali and asked the veggies of the day, this Thali is for dinner only per the menu. The person said there is no vegetarian Thali today.
