Our friends absolutely love Shah Restaurant and have been wanting us to try it for a while, so we finally went together. It's a small, no-frills place with a very basic setup--but honestly, the food is what truly matters here. We ordered chicken seekh kabab, chicken tandoori, chicken kadhai, along with garlic naan and butter rotis. The chicken seekh kababs were juicy, but they had a very strong and slightly off-putting turmeric flavor. It felt like there was a bit too much turmeric, which overpowered the other spices and slightly ruined the overall taste for me. However, the chicken tandoori completely made up for it. It was juicy, spicy, and perfectly charred--exactly how a good tandoori should be. The highlight for me was the chicken kadhai. Usually, I find chicken kadhai to be too tomato-heavy and overly tangy for my liking, but this one was perfectly balanced. The flavors were rich without being overpowering, and paired with the soft garlic naan and fresh tandoori roti, it was an absolute delight. Overall, we enjoyed our visit. Despite the simple ambience, the quality of the food shines through. We'll definitely be going back to try more dishes from the menu. read more

Honestly, i didn't want to do this. I liked shah the first time. Second time was garbage and now third time is even worse. The food is not good. Every sauce is parting, the flavors are not there. The place inside is also strange. You have some guests at a table going into the kitchen and coming out. What? I feel nauseas eating the unknown bits of a chicken leg out of an oily separated sauce. I have ordered from here for work lunch twice. The food is pretty good, both times I got the mixed vegetables and they were very flavorful with a nice texture. However their takeout packaging needs some work, they use plastic containers and wrap them up in plastic wrap but even then both times the oil from my dish spilled out of the container and the plastic wrap and coated the bottom of the container. Since there is also oil in the plastic wrap at that point, unwrapping the wrap to open up the food just makes a huge oily mess. I'm sure dining in is a much better experience. In terms of the menu they have plenty of labelled vegetarian dishes, but not too many seem to be vegan friendly. I did call to confirm the mixed vegetables do not contain ghee so at least that one should be vegan, but most of their other vegetarian curries seem to have paneer or cream. Overall the food is definitely pretty good but would love more vegan options (and labelling) and better food packaging for delivery. read more

The top thing I like is Shah is opened to 3 am on the weekends and midnight on weekdays. This is big in sleepy Sunnyvale, actually we're not as sleepy/boring as Fremont, so SVL should be the Happiest City instead. Let's get back to Shah, it looks pretty plain and simple but their food (and prices) is awesome! The Indian and Pakistani food is truly tasty. The Naan is fluffy and always hot. The pankora fish was the special of the day so I got that and the goat biriyani. I love their chai but can't have more than 1 tiny cup if I wanted to sleep esp if it was a late dinner. Oh, the fresh sliced onion, lemon and peppers is a must and Shah has them next to the chai dispenser for easy access. read more

This restaurant has Ian's vote!!! We have been slowly introducing Ian to Desi food. His preference is Pakistani style food that has flavor from spices, but does not carry heat from chilis. Ian loved the Goat curry. The Naans were fluffy and easy to tear into, and bite into. The gentleman who prepared the curry brought over another bowl full of gravy (Picture attached). That was a nice touch. Goat Biriyani was plentiful and packed flavor. Tandoori chicken leg was A-OK. It was a little bit on the drier side. I was staying in a hotel nearby and Shah was recommended to me as I said I like spicy food. It was a short walk away about 2 blocks, It's a spacious restaurant but I ordered to go as I was tired from traveling. I was greeted promptly and I mentioned this was my first time to Shah. I was asked what I liked and given recommendations. I went with the goat biryani. The portion size was enough for 2 adults. I have had biryani before but this was the best I've ever had. Spicy but not overly spicy for my taste. I didn't get the name of the cook but he said he's been making this food for 15 years. Came here right after a dentist appointment at iSmile almost right next door on the same shopping strip in the late afternoon. Ordered take out, but should have phoned up, as took 45 minutes to prepare. No reason to eat here in person, as the decor of the main eating room is like the bathroom -bare white walls floor to ceiling. $12 Baigan Bharta was way too watery, almost a soup, when it should have been pulverized eggplant. My wife normally loves Baigan Bharta, particularly from Satkar, up a few blocks before 85, or Ganesha on Kiely in Santa Clara. Not this time. $15 Chicken tikka marsala had too strong a flavor of tomato, and not enough butter nor onion flavor. Looks like they ran out of tikka marsala sauce and substituted tomato sauce. At least one other review has mentioned this. $15 chicken kofta best of the three dishes with three billiard ball size minced chicken meatballs in a greasy sauce, so much grease that it was flammable, and not allowed on plane trips. Wife didn't eat the rest of the Baigan Bharta. After 20 years of marriage I knew who was going to do clean up duty. read more

I practically lived at this restaurant when I lived on the Peninsula! This Amazing Food also brought my husband back from hell! They leave the spices in so you can spit them out if your body is not use to them! It's more authentic this way. We have tried food at this location and their other locations years ago many times when it used to be "SHAN" restaurant. We used to love it but we moved away and never came back since it became "SHAH". Recently, we were in the area and only had time for some pick-up. The person at the counter heavily recommended the goat biryani so went with it. The price felt a lil much for the place, but the amount of food and the taste made up for it. It was a very hearty amount, enough for 2 people. We would have preferred it a bit more spicy (reminder for next time) but the current spice level is also not bad either, will specially work great for kids too. Tl;dl Chicken. Chicken Legs. Ok let me give some background. Before Shah there was a wonderful Pakistani restaurant called Shalimar and at one time they expanded everywhere including Sunnyvale but now you need to go to Fremont (the original one) to taste it. And once Shalimar moved out of Sunnyvale I come to Shah if I don't feel like going to Fremont. Btw there is also Shan Restaurant nearby so don't be confused. Shah serves Pakistani food which is basically the same as Northern Indian food (but Indians won't include Pakistani in the name whereas most Pakistan restaurants will say Pakistani and Indian food.). The interesting thing about Pakistani restaurants is their tandoori chicken is usually better tasting than Indian restaurants maybe because they bake them fresh instead of serving them in buffets. Hence the chickens are moist and flavorful. There is a slight kick to it so make sure you prepare for it. It's also bone in but I highly recommend you try the chicken legs. But of course you can opt for chicken breast which is bigger but less flavorful. The naan is also amazing since it's also baked fresh from the tandoori oven. The naan here is slightly thinner than those from Shalimar so I like them better here. The restaurant is clean and bigger than it looks from outside. This is a no hassle restaurant so you get tea, utensils and water yourself. I kinda like it that way. Also tipping is really optional so do it if you want to but not required. The server is usually fairly nice and they will bring out your food after you order and pay. Overall I like the restaurant and it's next to the strip mall next to El Pollo Loco. read more

Bought food from here yesterday and unfortunately was very disappointing. The main reason we went here was due to some reviews saying how spicy the food was, and the fact that their food style comes from a region that generally has very spicy foods. We ordered the lamb curry (extra spicy), plus the chicken tikka, chicken korma, lamb kebab, and tandoori mix. Absolutely none of it was more than slightly mild - including the "extra spicy" lamb. Annoyingly, the flavor wasn't great either, so considering just 3 curries, some tandoori, some naan and 2 orders of rice were $150, we were very disappointed - and just added insult to injury. The service was okay (we got it as take out though, so didn't experience dine-in service), but they really need to advertise that their food is "zero spicy". None of our kids had any issue whatsoever with any of it either. Maybe we expect too much from Indian food in America. Are these restaurants scared they are going to get bad reviews for being too spicy? Or get sued? One reviewer claimed their mouth was on fire, but I have no idea how that could be unless they actually set it on fire with a flame, as the food certainly couldn't have done it. read more

My wife thinks the Indo-Pak Chicken Biryani from Shah is the best she'd ever had in the whole Bay Area. The heaping dish of fragrant saffron basmati rice over a generous portion of spicy chicken always satisfy her late night cravings. On top of the biryani, she likes the fluffy plain naan which she happily dips in my lamb curry. We both like their sheekh lamb kababs. Beef and chicken options are also available. The place is very casual and informal. You walk up the counter in the back of the restaurant. Place your orders, get a number and grab a table. Pretty much a self-service operation. Help your self to the plates, silverware and complimentary chai. Staff is friendly and helpful. However, ambience is a little lacking, but unpretentious with overhead TV screens playing Bollywood dance musicals. read more

Vegetarian reviewer: The food tasted fresh and tasty! I would also recommend it as it's pretty affordably priced and there are a lot of options. The sad part is that they have just vegan offering - okra masala. Haven't tried it yet. I got the Achari paneer as they said it is the spicier one. It was pretty nice but I wouldn't order it again. I easily took out 6 tablespoons of oil from the curry, not kidding. Omg - please if you're concerned about trying to eat a little healthy; ask them to use less oil / ask for a less oily options. Nice & Bright inside with outdoor parking. We have ordered take out over the phone a few times. The first time, we thought we were ordering from Shan by Big lots in Santa Clara but we ordered accidentally from Shah. The food is just as good but a little more expensive. It is packed well in plastic wrap so everything isn't super messy. We ordered Achaar gosht, but we got palak gosht (lamb) which was disappointing because we ordered palak paneer and both are spinach dishes. We would have preferred the different flavors. We were too hungry and too lazy to call or go back. Both dishes are good. Chicken tikka masala has good flavor, fresh garlic naan & rice. It was a very nice meal. This is my go to spot for chicken Seekh kebab rolls. The way this place does the chicken seekh kebab is undeniably the best in the bay. The freshness, size, and taste is unmatched. Not even pakwan or shalimar or shan or tandoori n curry can match Shah's chicken seekh kabab rolls. The naans are really good in it too and for the price it is a steal. The restaurant is really nice and they r currently doing some indoor renovations to make the place look better. Recently we ordered food to go from Shah and got palak chicken, chicken kofta, Baigan Bharta, and an order each of rice and of plain naan. The orders were packed securely so there was no problem with leakage of the gravies, and the food was piping hot. The baigan bharta was tasty, and what we had hoped it would taste like. We tried a dish we'd not had before, the palak chicken, and it was delicious. We especially liked that the spinach wasn't pureed into a gravy or sauce, but actually had spinach pieces so you could feel as if you were eating it along with the chicken. The chicken kofta was also something new for us. I had planned to order Malai Kofta, one of our favorites, but they didn't have that on the menu, so took a chance and tried the chicken. A nice surprise. We enjoyed this meal, the naan and the rice were also flavorful additions. We plan to put it into our Indian food take-out rotation. Next up, we'll try the chicken biriyani next, along with the chicken tikka masala, and chicken korma.
